Murrayfield Community Council (MCC) held an Ordinary Meeting on 3 October 2023

www.murrayfieldcc.org.uk CCWEL works at Roseburn The following works have now been completed:(a) installation of six communal bins at the foot of Murrayfield Avenue, (b) commissioning of the crossing at Stanhope Street, (c) reinstatement of the bus shelters on the north side of Roseburn Bridge and at West Coates. At the time of writing the following works are still outstanding: (d) installation of the bin housing at the foot of Murrayfield Avenue, (e) installation of planters, seating and hopscotch markings in Murrayfield Place, (f) installation of new planters on the Old Colt Bridge. Work has begun on repairing the cracked slabs and damaged tarmac at the foot of Wester Coates Terrace and Road, after which the crossing at the foot of Wester Coates Road will be operational.
Roseburn Park café
The Rosebean Café opened for business on 21 September and is open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 8.30 am to 4 pm and on Sunday from 9 am to 4 pm. The results of the recent survey on the future use of the Park were discussed at the AGM of the Friends of Roseburn Park on 25 October and will inform future projects.

The group of local residents which is pressing the Council to take urgent action has received the support of Cllrs Beal, Bennett and Davidson and Angus Robertson, MSP, but has yet to obtain a specific undertaking and timetable from the Council.
Licensing and Planning
Ice Rink, 13 Riversdale Crescent - A new 7 day 24hour public entertainment licence has been granted to Murrayfield Ice Arena Ltd. MCC had argued for an 11 pm curfew on non-sport related events in line with the curfew at Scottish Gas Murrayfield. The licence does not impose a curfew, but MIA Ltd have given assurances to notify and liaise with MCC regarding all such events. 37 Corstorphine Road – The application for demolition of the house and construction of a block of flats has not yet been decided. An archaeological survey and a bat survey have been carried out recently. An agreement on education and affordable housing provision is awaited. Osborne House, 1-6 Osborne Terrace - No decision has yet been announced on the provisional licensing application for the proposed hotel which includes alcohol consumption outdoors after 10 pm, to which MCC and the Donaldson Area Amenity Association have objected. The next Licensing Sub-Committee meeting is in late November.

Supporting others at home and abroad over the Festive Season

W
hile many people in other parts of the world like Ukraine and Israel/Palestine are suffering so much, it puts some of our own problems into perspective. Having been to Ukraine, Israel, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, I have seen the level of suffering at first hand and so, at this time of year, as Christmas approaches, while being aware that there are many here also having a tough time, it is worth mentioning that there are many local groups and organisations who help the less fortunate, and those who just need a helping hand, all year round, both at home and abroad. Thanks go out to everyone who has and is helping make life easier for anyone who needs that help. If everyone does something, no matter how small, it not only helps those receiving the support, it has an effect on the giver too, knowing that they have done something worthwhile.

Reduce your Stress Burden Pay attention when people talk about the sudden onset of bizarre and unusual ailments. This is especially true at this time of year. The answer can be found in a little word with big implications: stress. Our bodies endure stress, which can be simply defined as anything that causes a reaction. There are three main areas in which we experience stress: physical, emotional and chemical. Stress involving any of these areas can affect us profoundly. Here are some of the common signs of stress, along with ways to reduce your stress burden. STRESS SIGNALS
WAYS TO REDUCE STRESS
Unusual fatigue: Stress weighs on you physically, emotionally and mentally. It wears you down and drains you. Can’t get out of bed in the morning? Stress may be what’s keeping you there.
Work it off: Find the time to exercise. Whether it’s a quick trip to the gym, a peaceful run or a brisk walk with family or friends, exercise puts the focus somewhere else for a while. Biochemically, exercise has a big anti-stress benefit. It helps reduce levels of the stress hormone (cortisol) and increases your “feel-good” hormones, endorphins.
Sleeplessness: You may feel like sleeping for a day or two, but stress tends to keep you up at night. Impulsivity: If you find your eating habits changing suddenly, you may be turning to comfort foods to deal with stress. The same is true with impulse buying, particularly when it involves items you don’t really need. Anger/impatience: Stress can make you short-tempered and easily roused to anger, even if your demeanour is normally calm, quiet and reserved. Lack of concentration/forgetfulness: Stress usually occupies our mental time, so much so that we can have trouble remembering things or make more mistakes. Never forget your keys in the morning? When you’re stressed, you just might. Physical ailments: Back pain, neck pain and pain in general that doesn’t have a clear cause (e.g., an injury) is often related to stress. The same is true for colds and flu; stress can lower your immune system, increasing your risk of developing illness.
Get away from it: This can be challenging, but doing what you can to distract yourself can go a long way toward reducing stress. Schedule a holiday, visit old friends, take a long walk; whatever it takes to remove yourself from your stress environment. Smile about it: It’s much harder for stress to exist in a fun, laughter-filled environment, so put yourself in a position to smile when you’re under stress. After all, laughter truly is the best natural medicine. Talk about it: When you’re stressed, your mind can be a continual stream of negative, overwhelming, stressed-out thoughts. Don’t keep it all to yourself; sometimes the best way to reduce your stress is to vent about it and get a neutral perspective, rather than staying in a bottled-up, stressed-out state. November might not be your favourite gardening month, but it is a perfect time for tasks such as pruning.

Leave these alone It’s important to appreciate that not every plant needs or likes to be pruned.
• Stone fruit trees, such as cherries, plums and Prunus in general, are at risk of picking up a fungal disease called silver leaf if they are pruned when dormant.
• Some plants are grown for their winter stem
colour, including dogwood (Cornus) and some forms of willow (Salix). Don’t prune these in November because you won’t enjoy the benefit of their main attraction. Their bright stems are some of the most rewarding sights throughout winter gloom and they can be left right until early spring.
• Stay away from shrubs that flower early
in spring, including lilacs, magnolias and rhododendrons, as you will be cutting off their flowering branches.
• Evergreen trees are best left alone during
winter so that their leaves can form a type of protection against cold and wind. Some evergreen conifers will never regrow if you cut back into old wood.

branches. Pruning stimulates growth and helps to encourage a good crop of fruit while allowing light and air circulation into the tree, both being important for good health. Pruning also enables a shape to be maintained so that the tree doesn’t outgrow the allocated space. This is as important for bush forms as it is for trained fruit trees, such as cordons, fans and espaliers. Soft fruit bushes, such as blackcurrants, redcurrants and blueberries, can all be pruned during winter, to achieve an open, goblet form. If you have a wisteria, cut side shoots right back to just three or four buds on the framework of the shape you desire. Next summer you will need to remove most of the whippy growth, which can easily measure a metre long. Bush roses also benefit from being cut back in November as it reduces the likelihood of ‘wind rock’, which can destabilise the roots of the plant. Winter pruning is ideal for hybrid tea roses, floribundas and climbers that produce flowers on the new growth, but be gentle with modern shrub roses and ramblers because they prefer to bloom on older wood. Many deciduous trees and shrubs can also be pruned during the dormant season. It’s an ideal time to take out damaged and diseased branches, shape the form, and renovate them to encourage fresh new growth.

As we head into winter, give your immune system a boost – and your taste buds a treat – with this nourishing and vibrant dahl. Serves 4 Preparation time10 minutes Cooking time 40-45 minutes
Ingredients • 1 tbsp coconut oil • 1 tsp curry powder • 1 tsp cumin powder • ½ tsp cayenne pepper • 1 white onion, peeled and finely chopped • A thumb-size piece of fresh ginger, peeled and grated • A small piece of fresh turmeric, grated • 3 cloves garlic, crushed • 1 Jazz apple, grated on the large holes of a box grater • 200g red split lentils, well rinsed • 1 x 400g tin coconut milk • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste To serve • Lime juice, coconut yoghurt, chopped coriander and a sprinkle of chilli flakes 48

1. Add the coconut oil to a large pan over a medium heat. Once hot, add the curry and cumin powders and cayenne pepper, and cook for a few minutes, stirring to prevent burning. 2. Add the onion and cook for 5-6 minutes, until the onion starts to caramelise and turn golden. 3. Add the ginger, turmeric and garlic and cook for another couple of minutes. Add the apple and lentils and stir to mix. 4. Stir in the coconut milk and 500ml water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 25-30 minutes, until the lentils are soft and the consistency is creamy. Season with salt and black pepper. 5. Serve with a squeeze of lime juice and top with a dollop of coconut yoghurt, chopped coriander and some chilli flakes. • Ensure that all doors and windows are securely closed to prevent your pet from escaping if they become frightened.
Many pets can become anxious or frightened by the loud noises and bright lights that come with the firework displays on Bonfire Night and on New Year’s Eve.
• For cats and dogs, create a den area in
your home. Surrounding them with familiar bedding, toys and treats will immediately help them to feel secure.
Grief is an inevitable part of the human experience that will most likely touch everyone at some point in their lives. Whether it’s triggered by the loss of a loved one, the end of a significant relationship or the passing of a pet, grieving is an intensely personal journey that doesn’t always follow a linear, predictable path. People often talk about grief having stages (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance), but in reality the experience can be far more complicated. While there is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to grieve, there are certain ideas and methods to help sufferers navigate this emotional storm and make the process that little bit easier. Acknowledge your feelings The first step in dealing with grief is acknowledging your emotions. While it’s common to initially feel numb or in denial, when you’re ready it’s helpful to allow yourself to experience the full spectrum of feelings without judgement or shame. Frequent mood changes are common, and you may feel like you’re on an emotional rollercoaster at times. However, giving yourself permission to experience every emotion, however painful, is an important part of the healing process. Honour their memory It can be helpful to remember that when you lose a loved one, the relationship you shared lives on. To help keep their memory alive, try sharing happy stories with people who knew them. You could also create rituals or memorials to commemorate the person you’ve lost – whether that’s lighting a candle, writing a letter, planting 58
a tree or ‘talking’ to them on your morning run, it can be whatever feels right for you. Surround yourself with loved ones Although it’s tempting to withdraw during times of grief, leaning on your support system will provide more comfort in the long run. When you’re ready, try sharing your feelings with family and friends, or consider joining a support group to meet people who’ve experienced a similar loss.

Most people say that over time their grief becomes less intense, and they adapt to living a life without that person in it. However, for some people, feelings of grief do not diminish, and they may find it difficult to manage daily activities, such as going to work. If you’re finding it hard to cope, grief counsellors and therapists can provide a safe space for you to express your emotions and seek guidance. You can also speak to your GP if you find that your mood doesn’t improve over time.
