Corstorphine Community Centre CCC’s former site on Kirk Loan which was put up for sale recently is now under offer and a sign to this effect will be displayed shortly. Further information on the sale will be communicated in due course. CCC’s Management Committee are currently negotiating a short-term lease on a suitable property in the Corstorphine area given we have to vacate our current site on St John’s Road. A Community Asset Transfer application is also currently being developed to secure a permanent location in Corstorphine when it is fully intended to utilise funds raised for the rebuild of Kirk Loan to be properly and effectively utilised in developing the new community centre.

This is a delicious protein-packed salad full of beneficial omega-3 anti-inflammatory fats, and using walnut oil in the dressing is an easy way to further boost your intake of these healthy fats. This creamy dressing is equally delicious drizzled over any cooked fish or seafood. Method 1. Bring a large steamer to the boil, tip the potatoes into the water then lay the fish fillets, skin-side down, in the steamer basket. Cover and cook for 6-8 mins, until the fish is cooked through, then remove and set aside. 2. Blanch the beans for 1-2 minutes then drain. 3. Place the mixed leaves in a large bowl and toss in the potatoes, cucumber, capers and beans. Scatter over the olives and tomatoes. 4. Flake the fish into large chunks, discarding the skin, and add to the salad with the egg. 5. Whisk all the ingredients for the dressing together and season to taste. Drizzle over the salad just before serving.

In the last edition of the Murrayfield Grapevine, I wrote about how I had planned to arrange a concert on April 30th to raise funds for those affected by the war in Ukraine. I am delighted to report back today that it was a great success, and it raised over £5,000 for a wide range of individuals, groups and organisations, who are currently doing great work to reduce the suffering of many people out there. The success of the evening was down to the help of many people, including Kenny Herbert and the Applebeggars, who performed on the night and kindly donated many CDs to help boost the total raised. Also donations and support came from local businesses, the Rotary Club, the Grapevine Magazine, and many other friends near and far. This increased the amount raised, well beyond my expectations. A thank you, like this article, in the Corstorphine Grapevine continued to bring in donations from people who were either not aware of the concert, or who could not make it on the night.

When we talk about exotic plants, it simply means those that are non-native. But did you know there are now only around 30 truly native species, plus subspecies and hybrids that have naturalised themselves here? The term ‘native’ is generally defined as trees that established themselves in Britain around 10,000 years ago. This was the end of the last ice age, at a time when the English Channel was gradually forming. The Ages of Discovery and Enlightenment saw more and more explorers setting off around the world and bringing back unusual plants. Many ended up in private collections or in botanical gardens. This extended the range of plants within the UK, and we have come to love and admire many of these introduced species. The glorious Liquidambar, or sweet gum, for example, is native to Asia, parts of the Mediterranean and North America. Many acer trees originate not only from Japan but also from China and Korea. The tulip tree, Liriodendron tulipifera, hails from North America, and many of the flowering cherries originate from Japan, China and the USA. Even apple trees have an exotic history! The original ancestor of many modern apple cultivars can be linked back to an ancient apple: Malus sieversii. This wild apple is native to the mountains of Kazakhstan in Asia, where they can still be found today. It’s not surprising that UK trees have succumbed to many devastating problems. One of the first to be widely recognised was Dutch elm disease, which was said to have been accidentally imported from Canada in the late 1960s. It is 40

thought to have killed over 30 million elms. Ash dieback was first reported around ten years ago and this disease is expected to kill up to 95 per cent of Fraxinus excelsior. In the last 30 years there have been more than 20 serious problems caused by imported pests and diseases. Many diseases are caused by fungus pathogens, such as Phythopthora ramorum, which is affecting larch trees, and Phythopthora pluvialis, which affects western hemlock, certain types of pine trees and the Douglas fir. The latter was originally found in Oregon in the USA. The Oak Processionary Moth, native to southern Europe, is now found in London and restrictions on movement of oak trees have recently been put in place by Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs). Should we avoid planting exotics, or welcome species that are not native? UK trees are declining so rapidly that there is a strong case for extending the range. This means planting non-natives that will safeguard the future tree canopy. Especially now that we know the true value of trees in respect of tackling climate change. There is a lot to be said for strength in diversity. Our woodlands, garden planting and the wider landscape requires future-proofing and cannot adapt fast enough without our help. The word flexible comes from the Latin word flexus, which means “to bend.” Flexibility is the degree to which an individual muscle will lengthen. Stretching increases flexibility, which will help you perform daily activities and reduce the risk of muscle, joint and tendon injuries. Stretching also improves circulation, increasing blood flow to the muscles. Increased blood flow provides more nourishment to the muscles and gets rid of more waste by-products in the muscle tissue itself. Improved circulation can also help speed up recovery time if you suffer a muscle injury. What’s more, stretching can help eliminate or decrease low back pain, one of the most common kinds of structural pain, affecting a large percentage of the population. Muscle tightness in the quadriceps, hamstrings, hip flexors, and low back muscles is a common cause of low back pain. Stretching these muscles will often eliminate the pain. Keep in mind that every joint is tied to another joint, so if one muscle is tight, it is going to affect another joint or muscle. One of the greatest benefits of stretching is that you’re able to increase your range of motion, which means your joints can move further before an injury occurs. Stretching after you exercise (at least after you’ve warmed up a bit) has proven to be much more effective than
pre-workout stretches, because by the time you’ve completed your workout, the muscles are “warm.” Post-exercise stretching also helps reduce soreness, improves workout recovery, and ensures muscle and tendons are working properly. There are no disadvantages to stretching - unless, of course, you do them improperly, which is actually easy to do if you don’t know what you’re doing. Here are a few tips to keep in mind before starting any stretching program:
DON’T bounce when stretching; hold your position for the specified time. DON’T stretch cold muscles; always do some type of warm-up for at least five minutes: jogging in place, walking on a treadmill, light jump rope, etc. DON’T overstretch. There should be a little discomfort, especially if you’re not used to stretching, but it should not be painful. DON’T stretch a muscle improperly. The refurbished building will be so better than the present eyesore- FoRP are returning the exterior to the way it would have looked when it was first built, 116 years ago- and the interior into a warm and inviting cafe. Visitors will now have somewhere to go for a hot drink and a snack when the work is complete. Traffic and Transport
Since work on the Roseburn to Haymarket section of the City Centre West to East Link (“CCWEL”) began on 7 February 2022 MCC’s meetings have been attended by the Council’s Senior Project Manager, Active Travel, representatives of Balfour Beatty and Anturas Consulting and several of the Roseburn traders. Work on Roseburn Terrace has been delayed by the discovery of asbestos under the pavement by the Roseburn Bar, damage to cellar ceilings and a corroded gas main. The revised timetable and traffic management arrangements can be summarised as follows:• loading is now available on the south side of Roseburn Terrace and has been since 23 May, • the new loading and parking bay on Roseburn Terrace will remain in use throughout the rest of the works, • most work on Roseburn Terrace will stop on 6 June and will not restart there until September, • the contractor will work on the Roseburn side streets and West Coates over the summer. An updated map with the revised timetable for the works is available on MCC’s website (see below) and the CCWEL website - https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/ccwel/. There is now a weekly liaison meeting between representatives of the contractor and the Roseburn traders.

There has been no significant progress in persuading the Council to implement traffic calming measures. The Council has said that it will not be looking at bringing forward new projects until the summer.

Council consultation on the licensing of short term lets – MCC will make a submission, the main point of which will be to argue against the grant of a licence for a property which shares a common main door. The deadline for submissions is 10 June 2022. 9 Kinellan Road – The application for a development of 14 homes is still “awaiting consideration”. 37 Corstorphine Road – There is no decision yet by the Scottish Ministers on the proposed demolition of the existing detached house and construction of a 20-flat development. 9 and 11 Corstorphine Road – A new daylight assessment report has been submitted by the applicant. No decision has yet been made on the application for permission to convert the pair of existing Victorian vernacular 1.5-storey cottages to a 2.5-storey contemporary building. Trees – MCC remains seriously concerned about the Council’s practice of allowing the felling of mature trees in Conservation Areas without requiring replacement planting.

Our feet are our first point of contact with the world, and yet too often we cram them into ill-fitting shoes and leave them until last when it comes to self-care. From athlete’s foot to ingrown toenails, there are a variety of issues that can crop up as a result of poor foot care. So, what can you do to – literally – put your best foot forward, and how can you resolve any issues should they arise? Prevention is better than cure, so the best place to start is with your choice of shoe. A good pair of shoes should support and protect your feet, and allow natural movement when walking. Look for breathable fabrics, roomy toe-boxes, cushioned soles and low heels. Although wearing high heels once in a while won’t do much harm, long-term use has been linked to ingrown toenails and even arthritis. Once you’re wearing the right shoes, keeping your feet in good condition should be fairly straightforward. Applying a moisturiser or foot cream daily will help prevent cracking, and using a pumice stone or foot file will tackle any hard skin that often appears around the heels. It’s also important to check your feet regularly for cuts, sores, redness or swelling – especially if you’re diabetic. This is because raised blood sugar levels can often lead to a reduction in blood supply to your feet, which means that cuts and sores may take a while to heal. When it comes to foot care, toenail trimming is key. The trick here is little and often. Experts recommend trimming your nails every six to eight weeks, cutting them straight across using clean, sharp clippers. The best time is when you’re just out of the bath, but be careful not to cut them too short. Ingrown toenails are often the result of over-trimming, and besides being extremely painful, in extreme cases, may need an operation to resolve. 56
Athlete’s foot is another common foot problem, caused by walking barefoot in communal spaces such as gyms, showers or swimming pools. This fungal infection usually starts between the toes, causes significant discomfort, itching and pain, and can even spread beyond the feet if not treated. Over-the-counter fungal creams are the best solution, but it’s also important to keep your feet clean and dry in-between treatments. Some foot ailments can be slightly more bothersome, however. Ledderhose disease is a rare condition that causes connective tissue to build up and create hard lumps on the soles of the feet. The growths aren’t cancerous but they can cause pain, especially when walking. Home remedies include wearing soft shoe inserts, stretching, massages and anti-inflammatory drugs, but doctors might also recommend surgery in more serious cases. Although chiropody becomes more important as we age, taking good care of our feet also gets harder as we lose flexibility. If you’re experiencing any aches, pains or symptoms in your feet, visit your local chiropodist who will be able to help diagnose any issues and advise next steps.
