Welcome to the first edition of the Murrayfield Grapevine this year. As I write this introduction, January is almost already over! Wow! At least the mornings are starting to get lighter, and once these storms blow over we can start looking forward to Spring and warmer days. Your spine is the backbone of your entire body – literally and figuratively. That means poor spinal health may negatively impact you from head to toe. How can you keep your spine in shape?
EXERCISES (to Do & Not to Do)
NUTRITION ESSENTIALS
Some common exercises help promote spinal health in the form of proper posture while others promote poor posture and put the spine at risk. A strong core supports the spine, whereas a weak core can lead to pain and injury. To build the core, think bent-leg knee raises, stability ball exercises and other exercises that strengthen the core muscles (remembering to keep your spine protected at all times by avoiding rounding the back / neck). On the other hand, avoid exercises / movements that unduly stress the spine: slumping while sitting and bending forward immediately after sitting come to mind, as do exercises that make you prone to rounding your back (traditional sit-ups, toe-touches, etc.). Please seek exercise advice from a qualified healthcare professional.
Believe it or not, certain foods promote a healthy spine (and vice versa). For example, adequate water intake is necessary to nourish not only the body’s cells, but also the spinal intervertebral discs. As you might imagine, water helps keep the discs (and thus the spine) from getting stiff and becoming subject to injury. In addition, an antiinflammatory diet is key to preventing back pain and other spine problems due to inflammation. Think foods such as omega-3 fish and lean proteins, fresh produce, avocado and olive oil while reducing intake of pro-inflammatory foods (most fast foods and processed foods, sugar-laden sweets, etc.).
SLEEP MATTERS Your sleep position and the overall quality of your sleep play a big role in spinal health. The ideal position for the spine during sleep places you on your back with a pillow underneath the knees. As you might imagine, lying on your stomach is the worst position. Your pillow and mattress also matter, so make sure you choose the right ones for you, or your spine will let you know with neck and/or back pain. (Talk to your healthcare professional for suggestions.)
CHIROPRACTIC CARE No conversation about spinal health would be complete without mentioning chiropractic, an entire health care profession founded on the principle that a healthy, properly aligned spine may have far-reaching effects on the entire body. Research asserts chiropractic’s effectiveness in treating back pain, neck pain and various other musculoskeletal conditions, and the goal of chiropractic care is to improve spinal health and help prevent pain from returning. Murrayfield Community Council (MCC) held an Ordinary Meeting on 2 December 2023 and 23 January 2024. This report went to press before the later meeting. Please see the MCC website for the full Minutes of meetings.

The four new planters installed on the Old Colt Bridge and the extended pavement in Murrayfield Place have still to be filled. The Copenhagen junction at the foot of Wester Coates Road is currently being repaired. Roseburn Street/Russell Road junction - A number of local residents have complained that the new arrangement, which gives traffic on Russell Road priority over traffic on Roseburn Street, is causing increased traffic congestion and fumes. The Council has agreed that the monitoring of the new arrangements will be brought forward to early 2024.

MCC has been campaigning for such measures for the last ten years and has written to Cllr Scott Arthur, Chair of the Transport and Environment Committee, and Dave Sinclair, Head of Road Safety, urging the inclusion of this project in the 2024/25 road programme and emphasising that the three City Councillors also support the project.

A resident of Murrayfield Place has promoted a petition, which has 300 signatures, to have the new bins at the foot of Murrayfield Avenue removed. They are widely regarded as unnecessary and unsightly. Members of MCC, local residents and Cllr Alan Beal met Council officers on site on 15 January 2024. The Council has agreed to review this location with others in the same implementation phase and a decision is expected in two to three months.

Raising MCC’s profile in Saughtonhall, Baird and Riversdale
The Saughtonhall, Baird and Riversdale parts of the MCC area are under-represented on MCC. MCC intends to progress a mail drop to inform residents of the work that MCC does, face-to-face meetings in different locations and an online form on which local issues can be raised with MCC. It is proposed that the MCC meeting scheduled for 16 April 2024 be held in the Saughtonhall area (TBC).

Signposting Website and Directory of Community Services in Drumbrae, Gyle, Corstorphine & Murrayfield The Directory which was set up in 2023 gives information on local Voluntary Organisations and activities in the local area and is now available online as part of the new West Edinburgh Information Website.
The site includes a range of pages including information on individual organisations, catalogues sports and recreation, activities by age group, a weekly diary of clubs and activities offered, Special Events, What’s on and volunteering opportunities.
Hard copies are available in local Libraries and some other community venues
The site is still being developed and we welcome any feedback on how this can be improved to meet the requirements of the local community and organisations.
The sight has also been developed to increase visibility and reach of the amount and range of information available on Community Activities and services within the West Edinburgh Area. The website is available in 37 languages, is accessibility compliant and catalogues 100’s of activities. The success of the signposting website will depend on organisations providing up-to-date information on their own websites and ensuring key information is accurate as the signposting website links to organisations’ websites.

Who takes responsibility when things go wrong? by John Barrett - former local Member of Parliament and Councillor

Recently, I experienced three separate incidents where it was clear to me that those who are employed as public servants, and who should be helping, or serving the public, were in fact part of the problem. When I phoned the Council on behalf of some neighbours, to ask that all, paid for and missing garden refuse permits be sent out, I was told that it would be a “breach of Data Protection” to help sort this out. This was absolute nonsense, as I pointed out that all the Council needed to do was to check who had paid for permits and which of those people had not received them. As hundreds of households had paid for a service which was not delivered, yet excuses were made up, in order to do nothing. 28

Nobody could fail to be moved by the tragic stories of individuals losing their life saving and their homes, being made bankrupt, and even worse, with some innocent people going to prison and others losing their lives, all because the Post Office, and their lawyers, wanted to hide the fact that their Horizon computer system was faulty. Over 700 innocent people were prosecuted, and it was all highlighted in the TV drama, Mr Bates v The Post Office. One of the many issues at the heart of this miscarriage of justice, was the lack of anyone accepting responsibility for anything which had gone wrong. Even though hundreds of individuals were clearly saying “something is seriously wrong”.

The next incident related to local footpaths, which are a danger, because they have not been maintained. A local Councillor was told that the specific paths had not been adopted by the Council and so had not been fixed. Again, complete rubbish, as they were in a Council owned park, but excuses were put forward by an official, again to do nothing about the problem. The last and most important issue is the number of accidents caused by the temporary bollards, grey bases and kerbing, along with other measures related to the changes to our footpaths and roads, in conjunction with the Edinburgh Low Traffic Neighbourhoods or LTN. A problem that the Council refuses to take action on, or to listen to residents concerns about. Nothing is on the scale of the Post Office scandal, but the lack of willingness by some public servants to serve the public, needs to change.

A guide to wooden floors
Laminate or solid, engineered or reclaimed, timber flooring is a classic choice. Laminate floorboards are usually made from a resin-impregnated decorative paper surface layer bonded to a thin MDF or chipboard core. Cheap versions are not especially durable, but more expensive brands are tough and come with long guarantees. Solid wood is exactly that, all the way through the board, so it can be sanded repeatedly. Engineered wood is made from layers of solid timber or a veneer of solid timber on top of MDF, plywood, chipboard or softwood, with a balancing veneer beneath. A top layer of at least 5mm allows for limited sanding. Engineered boards shouldn’t warp, gap, cup or bow, unlike solid ones and high quality engineered wood is best for bathrooms or other wet areas.
Reclaimed boards have a beautiful patina and are the environmentally friendly option. They don’t come cheap as they often require work to remedy problems such as woodworm, stains, damage and old nails. Most timber floors sold in the UK are of European oak, which has a lovely grain and is long-lasting. Other choices include beech, maple, ash, walnut and pine. Options for finishes include stains, waxes, oils, varnishes and limewashes. Consider the form and laying pattern of the boards. Solid and engineered wood flooring is available as boards, strips, smallish blocks and parquet. Boards can be laid parallel or in chevron and herringbone styles, while parquet has had a renaissance recently. A new wooden floor will naturally become darker or lighter over time.

If you need to leave your dog ‘home alone’ for long periods during the day you may start to see signs of boredom from them. Giveaway clues are shredded carpets and damaged furniture. There are plenty of things you can do to distract them when you’re not there. Providing entertainment can alleviate separation anxiety and help to pass the time until they see their favourite person again! Fill a sturdy treat ball with peanut butter, canned dog food, and small biscuits. Use a few different types of food within the ball so that their interest doesn’t wane. Set up a ‘treasure hunt’ by hiding some plain dog biscuits or dental chews around the house or wherever they’re allowed to roam if you limit access to some rooms. Buy an interactive dog toy that stimulates their brain and sparks interest on and off throughout the day. They’ll have to figure out how to get the small treat from underneath each puzzle. 36

Ingredients • 1 tbsp rapeseed oil • 1 clove garlic, crushed and finely chopped • 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped • ¼ red onion, sliced • 100g mini chicken fillets, sliced into strips • 1 tbsp Shaohsing rice wine or dry sherry • 2-3 raw or cooked tiger prawns, shelled and deveined, sliced in half down the middle • 30g bacon lardons, finely diced • 1 tsp dark soy sauce • 6 canned water chestnuts or 10 canned bamboo shoots, drained • 1 small handful of beansprouts • 1 tbsp oyster sauce • ¼ tsp chilli bean sauce • 1 tbsp low-sodium light soy sauce • 2 spring onions, trimmed and sliced on the diagonal To serve • Cooked rice
1. Heat a wok over a high heat until smoking. Add the rapeseed oil and give it a swirl. Add the garlic, chilli and red onion and stir-fry for 5 seconds. Add the chicken strips and let them settle for 5 seconds, then cook, stirring, for 10 seconds. 2. Add the Shaohsing rice wine or sherry, and then add the prawns and bacon. Toss for a further 5 seconds. Season with the dark soy sauce and stir to coat all the ingredients. 3. Add the water chestnuts or bamboo shoots plus the beansprouts. Season with oyster sauce, chilli bean sauce and light soy sauce. Toss and mix well until well combined and the chicken is completely cooked through. 4. Sprinkle over the spring onions. Few of us know much more about our family origins than a generation or two before our grandparents. But family history – genealogy – is a subject that fascinates all ages, and there has been a massive growth in interest in recent years. Where to start The first step in your research should be to ask your family – parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles – for as much detail as possible. You want names, maiden names, dates of birth, birthplaces, where your ancestors lived, how many children they had and what they did for a living. If your family have documents such as birth and marriage certificates take pictures of these. Old family photos are not only of general interest but often have helpful information written on the back. You can soon find yourself overwhelmed with information. Getting some tips The BBC series ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ has some back episodes on iPlayer, and this should give you some tips on how the professionals do their research.
Be careful If you find one relative who seems particularly reluctant to share any information, there could be a ‘skeleton in the cupboard’ they’d rather you didn’t uncover. Furthermore, bear in mind there’s always the chance you’ll find out something you wish you hadn’t. Sometimes, it’s just luck When Elaine Thomas booked a week’s holiday in a remote cottage in Yorkshire, she had no idea she was about to solve a mystery. After several years of researching her family history, Elaine discovered that her ancestors were landowning farmers from the Richmond district of Yorkshire. She was eager to see where they had lived and died, so she booked a stay in a pretty cottage in the general area. She had been unable to find out where her great-great-great-grandparents were buried, but thanks to an extraordinary coincidence, she discovered the answer lay only a short stroll away. A book on display in the village church gave the exact location of their graves in the churchyard. Elaine believes that luck and instinct can play a pivotal role in family research.

Washing-up liquid is a great way to kill aphids Spraying plant pests with a weak solution of washing-up liquid does tend to work. It’s a good idea to spray the plants with clean water shortly afterwards to minimise the risk of harm to wildlife. Does it harm plants? Detergents containing surfactants do present a real risk of harm to plants, known as phytotoxicity. Some plants are more sensitive than others, particularly sweet peas, cherries, plums, hawthorns and tomatoes. It can remove the protective natural oils and waxy surface from the leaves. Soaps are kinder because they are made from fats and oils.

The application of fertiliser kills bacteria in the soil Organic gardening in tune with nature is undoubtedly best, if at all possible. However, is it true that artificial fertiliser damages soil microbes? It appears not. Bacteria absorb nutrients in fertiliser, and this helps them to multiply. The only exception seems to be when synthetic fertilisers are applied in very large amounts, which creates toxins. The most significant difference between synthetic and organic fertilisers is the time they take to release their nutrients. Chemical fertiliser releases nutrients as soon as it dissolves in water, whereas organic matter releases them very slowly.

Digging is good for the soil Digging and doubledigging is something that many of our ancestors would have done. It’s a great way to get rid of weeds, incorporate organic matter into the soil, increase air pockets and help with drainage in compacted areas. Right? Maybe not if we take the advice of today’s gardening experts and soil scientists. Not only is digging hard work, but it is generally thought to do more harm than good. It can quickly destroy the network of earthworm tunnels that provide air to roots, sever beneficial threads of fungus that work in harmony with plants, and disrupt the ecosystem beneath the surface. It can also stimulate microbes that release greenhouse gases into the air. Instead, apply organic mulch to the surface, which will deter weeds and allow earthworms to take it into the soil. Dig when you need to plant something new. Your back will thank you!

If a plant looks unhealthy, give it a feed Kindness can kill! If a garden plant looks sick, the worst thing you can do is give it a dose of general fertiliser. This can stress the plant as it tries to put on more growth. Instead, look for the cause of the problem. It might simply have dry roots, in which case it can be watered thoroughly, or the pH levels of the soil might be wrong, leading to certain deficiencies. Get to know your plants and give them what they need rather than what you think they want. 49
