As I am writing the restrictions for COVID seem to be being revised weekly which is fantastic news. Slowly we will see life resume although it will always be different now after what we have all been through. I have been very lucky to have been able to continue to publish the Murrayfield Grapevine throughout the pandemic, and would like to thank the many businesses that supported one another. Local events are starting to resume— please look through the directory for information. If you have a local business that you would like to promote or are running a local group or club that is restarting please get in touch—all contact information is at the foot of this page. Copies of each edition are uploaded to the website www.murrayfieldgrapevine.co.uk so don’t worry if you misplace your copy. Copies are also left at the library. The next edition is April/May and will be distributed in the first week of April. Until then please keep well and stay safe. Best wishes,
Jill

In the UK, we spent almost £8 million on pets and related products back in 2020. According to the Office for National Statistics, this represented an increase in spending of around 170 per cent within a fifteen-year period. It seems that most of us will lavish not only attention on our animals but also provide them with activities and enrichment as a matter of course. Naturally, it is man’s best friend, the dog, that remains the most popular pet, closely followed by cats and, since the Covid-19 lockdown, indoor fish. As pet love has grown, so has the associated industry. Emerging trends show that we now show far more concern over nutrition for our pets than ever before. There are new food brands emerging with increasing frequency, rising to the challenge of providing good nutrition including supplements and superfoods. 8
Pet owners are more likely to take their animals to an array of activities. Dogs, being the most portable of pets, now benefit from doggy swimming pools, a range of classes such as scent work and agility, fun fields for safe play and animal-friendly cafes. Even the National Trust has introduced a new ‘three pawprint rating’ to show at a glance the most dog-friendly venues. There is clearly a significant financial commitment that goes hand in hand with pet ownership. Pets are no longer consigned to the kitchen – they’re truly part of the family. By Caroline Knight

The Dower House Café Hello! My name is Sayana, my partner Euan and I have opened a new café in The Dower House in St. Margaret’s Park. Working with The Corstorphine Trust since the beginning of the year, we were delighted when they were equally excited about the prospect of a new Café in the beating heart of Corstorphine village.
The café is now open Tuesday - Sunday 8am-4pm, selling a wide selection of hot drinks, soft drinks, paninis, toasties, soup, and a wonderful selection of homemade cakes.
For those who love coffee, cake, and our community, we can’t wait to welcome you to The Dower House Café.

We are all dreading the hike in fuel prices this year, make sure you are keeping the heat inside your building, and not letting it escape through a badly maintained Roof, every little counts. If those gutters are full of debris don’t wait for the snow to add weight to them as well. Just call us, we care.
At TaxAssist Accountants we provide tax and accountancy services for businesses and tax payers.

If you are having any problems with Gutters, Chimneys, slipped slates, your roof in general, please don’t leave it... just give us a call or email, and let us prevent a small problem from becoming out of control for you. We would much rather catch any problems before they cause damage to anyone’s property.
There’s a better way.

Planning
MCC has been monitoring three recent planning applications for developments at Haymarket:22 Haymarket Yards – Planning permission for a development of student accommodation has been granted. Rosebery House, 9 Haymarket Terrace – demolition of existing office building and construction of a new 8 storey office building. Planning permission has been refused. Elgin House, 20 Haymarket Yards – demolition of the former HMRC office building and construction of a larger office building and adjacent hotel. A detailed planning application is expected soon. Plaques
MCC has installed a plaque commemorating local artist Charles H Mackie in Roseburn Park opposite the site of his former studio and plans a further plaque at Ravelston Elms to commemorate sculptors James Pittendrigh Macgillivray and Charles Pilkington Jackson, who occupied Ravelston Elms consecutively for a period of 60 years from 1894 until 1954. Plaques have also been installed beside the milestones at Beechwood Mains and the former railway bridge at Roseburn marking the turnpike road between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

the introduction of Controlled Parking Zones in parts of the city before the Council elections on 5 May 2022. Work on the Roseburn to Haymarket section of the City Centre West to East Cycle Link and Street Improvements project (“CCWEL”) is expected to begin on 7 February 2022. Concerns about pedestrian safety around Roseburn Primary School should be met to some extent by the conversion of Roseburn Gardens to a one-way street for vehicular traffic as part of the CCWEL works.
Ellersly and Kinellan Roads cannot be delivered until 2024/25 unless additional funding can be identified. The Council has provided estimates “for discussion only” of the cost of pavement widening in Ellersly Road, reconfiguration of the Kinellan Road junction and raised tables on Kinellan Road. MCC has proposed strategically placed planters as a temporary traffic calming measure.

Reduce your Stress Burden Pay attention when people talk about the sudden onset of bizarre and unusual ailments. This is especially true at this time of year. The answer can be found in a little word with big implications: stress. Our bodies endure stress, which can be simply defined as anything that causes a reaction. There are three main areas in which we experience stress: physical, emotional and chemical. Stress involving any of these areas can affect us profoundly. WAYS TO REDUCE STRESS Work it off: Find the time to exercise. Whether it’s a quick trip to the gym, a peaceful run or a brisk walk with family or friends, exercise puts the focus somewhere else for a while. Biochemically, exercise has a big anti-stress benefit. It helps reduce levels of the stress hormone (cortisol) and increases your “feel-good” hormones, endorphins.
Sleeplessness: You may feel like sleeping for a day or two, but stress tends to keep you up at night.

STRESS SIGNALS Unusual fatigue: Stress weighs on you physically, emotionally and mentally. It wears you down and drains you. Can’t get out of bed in the morning? Stress may be what’s keeping you there.

Impulsivity: If you find your eating habits changing suddenly, you may be turning to comfort foods to deal with stress. The same is true with impulse buying, particularly when it involves items you don’t really need. Anger/impatience: Stress can make you short-tempered and easily roused to anger, even if your demeanour is normally calm, quiet and reserved. Lack of concentration/forgetfulness: Stress usually occupies our mental time, so much so that we can have trouble remembering things or make more mistakes. Never forget your keys in the morning? When you’re stressed, you just might. Physical ailments: Back pain, neck pain and pain in general that doesn’t have a clear cause (e.g., an injury) is often related to stress. The same is true for colds and flu; stress can lower your immune system, increasing your risk of developing illness.
Get away from it: This can be challenging, but doing what you can to distract yourself can go a long way toward reducing stress. Schedule a holiday, visit old friends, take a long walk; whatever it takes to remove yourself from your stress environment. Smile about it: It’s much harder for stress to exist in a fun, laughter-filled environment, so put yourself in a position to smile when you’re under stress. After all, laughter truly is the best natural medicine. Talk about it: When you’re stressed, your mind can be a continual stream of negative, overwhelming, stressed-out thoughts. Don’t keep it all to yourself; sometimes the best way to reduce your stress is to vent about it and get a neutral perspective, rather than staying in a bottled-up, stressed-out state. What can we do about those bills which keep on rising? By John Barrett - former local Member of Parliament and Councillor
Hardly a day passes without news of another rising bill, or another increasing charge heading our way in the near future. Is there anything we can do about it? As I write this, British Telecom have announced today that its customers’ bills for broadband and phone bills will jump by 9.3% from the end of March. Gas and electricity bills are set to jump for most customers and the increased need for heating during the recent cold winter period will bring a shock to many when the next bill arrives if people have not already had notice of a sharp rise in their monthly payments. Food bills increase with every weekly shop. Overall prices have gone up their fastest in 30 years and some experts have warned that there is worse to come. Most people have already taken measures to reduce their bills, but it looks like this year everyone will still be looking for more ways to reduce costs. As a BT customer I recently moved on to a tariff which allows unlimited calls to landline for a small monthly fee, as I was shocked to discover that to phone my local medical centre had cost me nearly £5 for one call, after I had been kept on hold for 30 minutes. This change has already saved more than the next price rise will cost. At home, it is important to stay warm, but we stopped heating the rooms we are not in and this reduced our gas consumption last year, so that when the unit cost increases it will reduce the impact of the rising charges. A big cost for every family is their food bill, yet it is a surprise to many to discover that the average family throws away about £10 worth of food every week. Reducing waste; potatoes, bread, fresh fruit and more can help save money and the environment, as we throw away more than six million tons of food every year. If you have any tips about reducing bills, please share them with your friends and family, or post them on local community web sites, so everyone can benefit from them. 34

Giant hogweed
Glendevon Gardening Services A professional fine gardening service Services Provided Include :
Aconitum, also known as Monkshood
Things to avoid in the garden We all know that gardens are good for us, but a few plants are extremely poisonous and in very rare cases can even cause death. Be aware of potential hazards when choosing plants, and be cautious when visiting other people’s outdoor spaces and when out and about enjoying nature. It’s particularly important to ensure that anything touched by toddlers, small children and even pets, is as safe as possible. Some of the most poisonous plants in the UK: Monkshood, Aconitum napellus, also known as wolfsbane. It is a tall plant that produces beautiful purple-blue flowers in summer. They look rather like a monk’s habit, hence the common name. Despite the fact that touching the leaves and then eating even a small part, or allowing entry of the plant via an open wound, can lead to fatal poisoning, this plant is widely available for planting within gardens. It doesn’t always come with a warning. The death-cap mushroom, Amanita phalliodes. This is a fairly common fungus here in the UK, growing in mixed deciduous woods, particularly under oak and beech trees. It’s quite a large mushroom, growing up to 15cm across with a domed, white cap. It looks similar to several edible mushrooms but is deadly poisonous. Some call it the silent assassin and only a small amount can result in death. It contains a toxin for which there is no known cure. Hemlock, Conium maculatum is a highly poisonous flowering plant that is a member of 42
the carrot family. It has a rather attractive umbel flower and purple spots on the green stems. It’s common in the UK, growing by hedges, ditches and woodland edges. All parts of the plant are toxic because of a fast-acting poison called cicutoxin. This causes stomach upsets and even paralysis of the lungs. The Greek philosopher, Socrates, was said to have died after being poisoned by tea made from this plant. Deadly nightshade, Atropa belladonna, is obviously poisonous – the clue is in the common name! It’s actually the fruits that are the biggest problem on this tall, bushy plant that likes shady and wooded areas. It produces bell-shaped flowers in early summer followed by black berries that can grow to the size of cherries. They look tempting to eat but contain the toxins atropine and scopolamine, which cause paralysis to organs, including the heart. It’s a potential killter in severe cases. Giant hogweed, Heracleum mantegazzianum, has rightly earned a reputation for being one of Britain’s most dangerous plants. It probably won’t kill, but it burns severely due to its toxic sap, which reacts with human skin and sunlight. It’s a huge beast, growing up to 4.5 metres tall, with umbrella-shaped white flower clusters. Even foxgloves are poisonous, if consumed. They contain digitalis and other chemicals that affect the heart. The pretty, bell-shaped, tubular flowers are just the right size for little fingers, so you won’t want these transferred into the mouth. By Caroline Knight: Gardendesignideas.co.uk

There are twists on classics such as macaroni cheese, along with unique flavour combinations that are sure to please if you’re bored to tears with everyday meals. Think honey-baked sriracha drumsticks, coffee-glazed focaccia, and banana-skin bagels. Family Comforts – Rebecca Wilson Fed up of cooking two different meals most nights? You’ll find plenty of easy midweek meals, along with hands-off slow-cooker dishes, weekend meals and puddings. Winter Appeal
Many of the people we support are in the vulnerable or extremely vulnerable groups because of advanced age and complex health needs. Due to the nature of dementia, clients thrive on familiarity, routine and meaningful social interaction, something the pandemic affected greatly. It has therefore been especially hard for people living with dementia, with reports of increased levels of confusion, fear and anxiety, with some elderly people becoming virtual prisoners in their own homes, lonely and isolated. And although things are improving, we are still finding that a significant proportion of elderly people remain very cautious. Throughout the pandemic our team have shown great innovation and resilience by reaching out to provide contact and comfort to our elderly service users via a range of outreach and digital methods. Please help our Winter Appeal by making a donation so we can continue supporting our vulnerable clients.

According to a growing number of experts, sitting is the latest health hazard to look out for. But why is a sedentary lifestyle so bad for us, and what can we do about it? Working from home, online shopping and periods of self-isolation: since the first lockdown struck, many of us will have noticed that we’re sitting down more than ever before. Unfortunately, this change of lifestyle comes at a cost. Evidence suggests that excessive sitting can expose us to a range of health issues, from backache and varicose veins to diabetes. The reason? Humans were built to stand, with the heart, cardiovascular system and bowel functioning far more efficiently when we’re upright. Now, this isn’t great news for the thousands of us that have desk-based jobs – but don’t lose hope just yet. There are lots of things you can do to help: Invest in a standing desk If you work in an office or from home, one of the easiest ways to reduce your sitting time is to invest in a standing desk. Standing is certainly better for us than sitting. However, there is evidence to suggest that standing still for long periods of time isn’t hugely beneficial to our bodies either. Balance is key; start by standing for 30 to 60 minutes a day and gradually increase until you’re alternating between standing and sitting every hour. Take regular breaks It can be hard to motivate yourself to leave your desk during the working day. However, taking regular breaks – even if it’s just to grab a cuppa – can make a world of difference.
48
In the office and need to send an email? Get away from your desk and relay the message in person. Working from home and fancy a coffee? Treat yourself by taking a walk to your local cafe. And on days when you’re too busy to take a lunch break, set a timer to remind you to stretch or have a little walk around. Sit the right way If you’re spending much of your working life at a desk, it’s important to invest in an office chair that will help you perfect your posture. Choose a chair with lumbar support to ensure your lower back curves to the shape of the chair, and make sure it’s adjusted so your feet are resting on the floor. You should also avoid crossing your legs and try to keep your back straight as much as you can. Doing so will make the hours you do spend sitting as comfortable as possible.

Get some exercise Evidence suggests that we need between 60-75 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per day to combat the dangers of excessive sitting – but the more frequent the better. You’ll be glad to hear that this doesn’t mean you have to hit the gym every day. Moderate exercise could be a brisk walk on your lunch break, a light bike ride or even those slightly more exerting cleaning duties, such as vacuuming, window cleaning or mopping the floor.

February in the UK is not noted for its abundance of fresh produce, but we make the best of it by having three days in the month that are all about food, and one that is about love – and therefore more food. On the 1st it’s the Chinese New Year, the 6th is Yorkshire Pudding Day, the 14th is Valentine’s Day. And then Pancake Day. Ah, although that is often in February, this year it’s on the 1st March, but what’s one day between friends? Let’s start planning it in February anyway. Chinese New Year 2022 is the year of the tiger. Of course, Chinese restaurants and takeaways will be making the most of the date with various promotions and special dishes. But, maybe this is the year you should bring out your inner tiger and have the courage to make your own from scratch.
Yorkshire Pudding Day A batter of eggs, flour and milk (or sometimes water) is poured into oiled and preheated baking pans. Although typically served with a roast dinner, for a special February treat you can’t beat toad in the hole, where sausages are added to the batter. If we are having a roast, let’s make the most of what is in season by eating root vegetables – carrots, swede and turnips. Add a bit of winter cabbage, too, for those all-important greens. Valentine’s Day Not strictly about food, but loving couples often celebrate the day by going out for a meal. And of course, chocolate, which is rumoured to be an aphrodisiac, is a popular gift. You do need to go for the dark stuff though but if your beloved doesn’t like it, maybe milk chocolate will have the desired effect, simply because of the thought behind it. Red wine – or indeed any alcohol within reason – has its part to play on this day too.

Pancake Day This is a batter of eggs, flour and milk. Yes, it’s a Yorkshire pudding in wolf’s clothing. The different cooking method means pancakes are never served with a roast dinner, any more than Yorkshires are sprinkled with sugar and lemon. For a bit of variety, whip up fluffy American-style pancakes using selfraising flour instead of plain, and include baking powder for extra rise. Cook up some apples and add some spices to give your pancakes at least a bit of seasonal interest. 50

ell, here I am on the train, pulling out of
Hidden phrase: Edinburgh to reach London in just over 4 hours’
time for the start of a new life. Nice of my friends to give
Dogs laugh, but they laugh with me a “Good luck” send-off at the station, but now it is a their tails. MaxtoEastman relief be on my own in the First Class carriage, to re-
read my instructions, but first collect my thoughts.
I’ll start by looking back to a moment four months ago. My pals and I were relaxing in the Corstorphine Bowling Club lounge, putting the world to rights over a bottle of wine. We were talking about the new housing development at Cammo. I had seen the plans on the Council web page, and was going on about how boring it would look. “What’s needed” I said, “Is a central feature – a focal point for the community, an open square with -say – a huge fountain in the middle. What do you all think?” How they laughed, but I insisted, and eventually they all agreed that I had a point.
CROSSWORD PAGE 8
I thought nothing more of it, until Arthur said that he had seen my name in the Features page of the Evening News. That mischievous pal George had written “Local man proposes fountain at Cammo development” and then it went viral….. I was interviewed by the press and appeared on Reporting Scotland; Edinburgh people were keen to make a campaign out of it: “local man takes on the developers/the council/the establishment…” I had reached those local people just when they needed a hero; the wee man opposing the powers that be. That proposed fountain, born in an off-the-cuff remark, became famous. Artists and architects sent me designs, town planners discussed and argued for this one or that one….. the idea of a fountain had caught the public imagination. It was, of course, only a local issue, but then came the announcement that there would be a general election. My bowling club pals suggested - in jest, I assumed – that I stand as an independent, the Fountain candidate. Only joking, I thought, but they clubbed together to put down a deposit and there I was…. Independent Candidate for the seat of Edinburgh Northwest. Me? An MP? Well, I thought, it’s their money and a bit of a laugh, so I’ll go along with it. I became known as the Fountain man, standing on a single-issue platform. I gave interviews, and, when asked about my manifesto, my views on Brexit, climate change, Scottish independence, the NHS or taxation I offered a solid stone wall. With as much gravitas as I could muster I stated that I would consider all of these questions
once a suitable fountain for Cammo has been approved. How the public loved someone unfazed by the bullying interviewers! What neither I nor my friends had realised was that the voting public had also become heartily fed up with the traditional political scene. Mud-slinging, claim and counter-claim, corruption, smearing, self-interest….the electorate had had enough. An independent candidate with no party loyalties, with no political or personal baggage which could be picked over and criticised….. a political unknown standing for a fountain in the Edinburgh Northwest constituency against the big boys…… I was a welcome breath of fresh air to the folk of Northwest Edinburgh. I held no rallies, distributed no leaflets, spurned the many invitations to debate in public, yet I was elected with a thumping majority. Sensation! As soon as the hung Parliament result was known I had phone call after phone call from the Great and the Good offering support for the Cammo Fountain…. If they could count on my support in the House. How the media loved me! Yes, it has been a difficult four months, but here I am….. heading south to a Premier Inn near Euston for a week, then I will rent a flat near Westminster, and act to the best of my ability as the Member of Parliament for Edinburgh Northwest. My wife will join me house-hunting in London. This week she is hat-hunting for the State Opening of Parliament in ten days’ time. Just when we were settling into retirement we will have long hours, responsibility, two homes, a high profile and less time for the grandchildren. There is a strong chance that the Council will ask me to choose a fountain for the new suburb, and I’ve heard a rumour that they want to call the square David’s Square, but I won’t have that. If and when a fountain is built I’d like it to be known as the People’s Fountain in People Power Square. One year at Westminster will be enough for me; I will resign my seat in Parliament and reclaim my seat in the bowling club lounge.
Wish me luck!
