As a nation, we love our gardens and spend a considerable amount of time and money on them. As we rush to get those jobs in the garden done, there is a risk that gardeners may injure themselves. What everyone wants is to be fit and healthy enough to actually enjoy sitting in their garden and enjoy the fruits of their labours come summer time, so here are some helpful tips from Discover Chiropractic!
• Don’t wear clothes that are tight or could constrict your movement.
• Gardening is like any other exercise; you need to warm up first. Don’t go straight into heavy garden work; start off with lighter jobs as this will lessen the chance of muscle strain.
• When using a ladder or steps, make sure you are always facing it, keeping your shoulders, hips and knees pointing in the same direction.
• Rather than leaning or reaching, move the ladder or step regularly to keep up with where you are.
• Any kind of ladder must be firmly and safely planted in position and, if possible, have someone else there to keep an eye on things.
• Vary your activity by spending no more than 20-30 minutes on any one thing and make sure you take regular breaks.
• If laying a patio, keep the slab close to your body and bend your knees; it is sometimes better to bend one knee rather than two, as your supporting leg gives you a position of strength.
• If using railway sleepers, two people will probably be needed.
• Get as close as possible to the things you are pruning and avoid overstretching to reach the area you are dealing with.
• Invest in some long handled secateurs to reach plants and bushes that are beyond normal reach.
• If you are planning a trip to the local DIY store to buy heavy items such as cement or gravel, buy smaller bags rather than one big bag as they are easier and safer to carry.
• If you do buy heavy items, use a trolley and if on your own, ask an assistant at the store to help you.
• If buying things like compost, sand or gravel in bulkier amounts, shovel the contents of the large bags straight into smaller containers or wheelbarrow from the back of the car.
• Don’t lift with your arms straight out, keep the elbows bent and to your side to minimise the stress on your back.
• If having items delivered, have them unloaded as close to where you need them as possible; this will save the effort of moving them again.
• A specialist garden trolley might be worth investing in to move these sorts of materials around, especially if you have lots of patio pots to move around as well.

Hello again everyone,
With summer approaching fast, most damaged roofs and leaks go unnoticed and untreated, however summertime is the perfect time to get someone out and inspect the most important part of your home.
You may wonder why this would matter as there is no leak or visible damage, with the majority of our bigger jobs the issue has come from a small problem that unfortunately develops into a bigger one. Leaving your roof with no inspection can cause further damage and most importantly can be incredibly pricey. Here at DM Duncan and Son we offer FREE estimates to make sure this does not happen to your home.
You may be interested to know that we also have a limited time offer on for our roof maintenance package usually costing £320, NOW only costing £150. As this is only a limited time offer, be sure to get in touch as soon as possible if you are interested in the deal.
Lastly the DM Duncan and son team would like to give a big thank you to jill at the Grapevine for giving us the opportunity to reach out to you all again.
Take care, until next time……

When the coronation of King Charles III takes place on 6th May at Westminster Abbey, the ceremony – which will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury – will be rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry. However, it will also reflect the monarch’s role today, and look to the future.
The Queen’s coronation on 2nd June 1953 was one of the greatest events of the twentieth century. More than 8,000 guests filled the abbey to witness the crowning of the young mother, while crowds lined the route that took her and the Duke of Edinburgh to and from the abbey. Millions more were lucky enough to watch the event on the still novel phenomenon of television, this being the first time the event had been televised.
It has been speculated that King Charles will have a toned-down affair with reduced costs, with suggestions of it lasting just one hour and with around 2,000 dignitaries in attendance.
Joint, ligament or tendon sprains
Muscle tears or strains
The date of 6th May was reportedly chosen in consultation with the government, the Church of England and the Royal Household. However, the date does have some symbolic references to family members:
• Firstly, the coronation of George VI, the King’s grandfather, was in May.
• 6th May is also the birthday of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, the King’s grandson, who will be turning four on the day.
• It’s also the same date as the late Queen’s sister, Princess Margaret, was married in 1960.
During the ceremony the King will be anointed with holy oil, receive the orb, coronation ring and sceptre, and be blessed and then consecrated by the Archbishop. Monarchs traditionally sit in the fourteenth-century King Edward’s Chair, and Charles will be crowned with the St Edward’s crown, becoming the fortieth British monarch crowned at the Abbey since William the Conqueror in 1066.
Camilla, Queen Consort, will also be anointed and crowned, as was the Queen Mother when George VI was crowned in 1937.
Man and boy
Charles will be 74 at the time of the ceremony, the oldest ever new monarch. In 1953 the thenPrince Charles was just four years old when his mother was crowned.
As with royal ceremonies, there had been behind-the-scenes preparation and practices in the lead up to the big day. Charles’ boyhood memories include how, the night before, the Queen came to say goodnight wearing the St Edward’s Crown as she was trying to get used to its 5lb weight. He also recalled being kept awake by the “thousands of people gathered in The Mall outside Buckingham Palace chanting: ‘We want the Queen’”.
Royal author Robert Jobson says: “Charles has adapted to his new role very well and is out connecting with people, which sadly the late Queen wasn’t able to do towards the end of her life.”

A third of apartments at Artisan Real Estate’s cutting-edge Rowanbank Gardens development on Gylemuir Road in Corstorphine have now been sold following a buoyant sales start to the year.
Described as a ‘spectacular blueprint for low carbon living’, Rowanbank Gardens will deliver 93 apartments for private sale set around a large garden space filled with fruit trees and communal planting beds. Work began in summer 2021, with the first move-ins expected by the end of the year. In total, 31 apartments have now been snapped up by savvy buyers – including 10 since the start of the year. According to David Westwater, Artisan’s Development Director for Scotland, a major draw is the development’s smart, energy-efficient design – which means delivering green, low-cost energy.
He says: “Rowanbank Gardens provides smart, energy-efficient design geared to achieving low to zero carbon ratings, with the added benefits of significantly lower home-running costs. We aim to make each apartment as energy efficient as possible by using the very
latest in technology to encourage low carbon living.
“Latest research shows that average annual hot water and heating costs for a twobedroom apartment at Rowanbank Gardens could be as low as £775 per year - or less than £65 per month - providing long-term cost savings for first-time budget-conscious buyers or purchasers looking for more energy efficient living.”
Prices for a one-bedroom apartment start from £245,000, with a two-bedroom from £315,000 and a three-bedroom from £420,000 making the development a perfect destination for first-time buyers and downsizers wanting to live in well-connected, bustling community just minutes from the city centre.
To register interest in Rowanbank Gardens and book an appointment at the new on-site sales and marketing suite, visit the development website at www.rowanbankgardens.com or call 0131 516 3302.

Dates for your Diary
Following the recent Council by-election, Murrayfield residents have a new City Councillor, Fiona Bennett, who joins the other ward Councillors, Allan Beal and Euan Davidson. They can all be contacted at the City Chambers to deal with local issues and Council services.
Hopefully all three will keep to their word and push for financial support to businesses in Haymarket who will be hit when Haymarket Terrace closes to eastbound traffic for eight months. They must not let them down in the way Roseburn traders were, when promised support from the Council was not delivered.
I was delighted to relaunch the Corstorphine Literary and Geographical Society last month (familiarly known as The Lit) to a packed St. Ninian’s Church hall to hear about what I have been doing in the community since standing down as your MP. I was also able to announce that the proceeds from the sale of my book, The Mayor of Kalymnos, (which has previously raised money for Prostate Scotland), are now going to support Sunflower Scotland, which is an Edinburgh based charity helping victims of the war in Ukraine. Following my talk, the book immediately sold out at McLean ’s newsagent in Corstorphine High Street. It is still for sale at Pippin Gifts at 30 Haymarket Terrace.
I have also been in touch with a young Ukrainian artist who has given me permission to use this design from her painting to produce greeting cards, and again all proceeds from their sales with go to Sunflower Scotland. You can find out more about their great work at www.sunflowerscotland.co.uk
The late Donald Gorrie, who was a long-term Murrayfield resident and known by many, would have been 90 this year. He was an Edinburgh Councillor and my predecessor as Member of Parliament in Edinburgh West and a Member of the Scottish Parliament. There will be a dinner near Murrayfield to celebrate Donald ’s life and work to which all are welcome. I was delighted to be asked to speak at it along with the current Lord Provost, MP and MSP. A versatile ingredient, known for their flaky skins, nutty flavour and creamy consistency, Jersey Royals are available from now until July each year.
Serves 2
Preparation time 30 minutes
Cooking time 12-15 minutes
Ingredients
• 3 tsp olive oil
• 225g Jersey Royal potatoes, sliced or cubed
• 2 spring onions, cut diagonally
• 25g chorizo, chopped
• 8 scallops
• Salt and black pepper
• 25g butter
• ½ tsp lemon zest
• 2 sprigs of lemon thyme
• A handful of rocket
1. Heat 2 tsp of the oil in a small frying pan, add the potatoes and fry, turning regularly, for 7-8 minutes until just tender and golden. Add the spring onions and chorizo and cook for a couple of minutes more until the chorizo has released its oil and the spring onions are wilted. Remove from the pan, set aside and keep warm. Wipe out the pan with kitchen paper.
2. Dry the scallops with kitchen paper and season with salt and pepper. Heat the remaining oil in the pan until hot, add the scallops and sear them for a minute until just beginning to brown, then turn them and cook for a further 30 seconds. Remove from the heat, add the butter, lemon zest and thyme, allowing the butter to melt and coat the scallops. Spear the scallops onto skewers (allowing 2 per skewer).
3. Spoon the potato mixture onto 2 warm plates, add 2 scallop skewers per portion, drizzle over the buttery juices before serving and scatter around the rocket.

Just as we humans do, cats and dogs can develop allergies. This is where their immune system overreacts to a foreign material, such as pollen, dust, a specific food protein or an insect bite.
Allergy symptoms in animals are not the same as you see in humans. The most common symptom of an animal allergic reaction is itching of the skin called pruritus. This can be just in one area of their body or all over.
The severity of the pruritus can cause serious scabbing and infections on the skin as well as hair loss and increased skin pigmentation. Furthermore, some animals can show signs of respiratory distress such as coughing, sneezing, and wheezing.
Runny discharge from eyes and nose as well as swelling of the eyes can be seen in cats. Other possible symptoms from animals suffering from allergies include vomiting and diarrhoea.
Allergies are difficult to diagnose and as a pet owner, you should pay close attention to an animal’s behaviour and surroundings if you suspect it is suffering from an allergy, to see if you can determine the trigger.
Of course, any of the above symptoms could be something else entirely, and if it is an allergy, it could be food or an insect bites, rather than just seasonal pollen. Given that, it’s really important that you get a diagnosis from your vet rather than just guessing at the appropriate treatment.

Murrayfield Community Council (MCC) held Ordinary Meetings on 24 January and 7 March 2023 via Zoom.
Please see the MCC website for the full Minutes of meetings.
The Council’s Project Manager for the City Centre West to East Link (“CCWEL”) and a representative of Balfour Beatty attend each MCC meeting. The current position on the Roseburn to Haymarket section of the CCWEL is as follows:-
• The installation of the two-way cycle track and resurfacing of the main road from the foot of Murrayfield Gardens along Roseburn Terrace to just west of Devon Place been completed. Work has now moved to the section from Devon Place to Clifton Terrace.
• The Copenhagen junctions at the foot of Wester Coates Terrace and Road have been completed. There have been numerous incidents recently which show that many drivers, cyclists and pedestrians do not know how to behave at these junctions.
• Murrayfield Place has been re-opened to two-way traffic. Work is continuing on the Old Colt Bridge where cobbles are being relaid on part of the surface and slabs laid on the remainder. Heritage lighting is also being installed.
• The junction of Roseburn Street and Russell Road has been altered to give traffic on Russell Road priority.
• The new traffic signals at Roseburn Gardens and Stanhope Street will be installed in early May. The signals at the Roseburn Street/Russell Road/Roseburn Terrace junction will be installed before then.
Next Meeting: Tuesday, 2 May 2023 at 7:30 pm (preceded by AGM at 7 pm) in Murrayfield Parish Church Upper Hall. Please see MCC’s website www.murrayfieldcc.org.uk for up to date information and for full Minutes of meetings.
Helps the people of the area to have their say on any matter affecting their lives, their welfare, their environment, its development and amenity.
• For eastbound traffic the right turn from Roseburn Terrace into Russell Road will be re-instated by 28 April.
MCC is still chasing Council officers for an update on the design proposals for safety measures on Kinellan and Ellersly Roads, which were promised in the current financial year but have now been delayed to the current calendar year.
Although no houses were flooded, the exceptional weather event on 30 December 2022 caused some alarm to residents in Saughtonhall. The Council’s website has been updated to provide more information on flood prevention procedures with a view to reassuring potentially affected residents. Automatic email messaging to a central residents’ email address has been offered.
Signage at Tesco Extra, 3 Roseburn Terrace - Listed Building Consent for new signage and fascia has been granted.
Telecom installation by 11 Succoth Gardens - The application for a 5G telecom mast on the pavement by 11 Succoth Gardens in the Coltbridge and Wester Coates Conservation Area has been refused.
13 Ravelston Park - The application for a two-storey extension to the villa at 13 Ravelston Park attracted 23 objections and was referred to the Development Management Sub-Committee for decision on 15 March 2023. At the time of writing the decision is not known. MCC did not submit comments per its normal procedure on householder applications.
Garden tidy’s & maintenance both residential and commercial
Fencing, decking, raised beds installation & repairs on a wide selection of fencing styles
Tree work - including crown lifts, pruning, reductions & removals
Planting - fully designed, supplied and installed
Turfing - lawns and wildflower meadows
Ask anyone what their ideal garden would feel like and the phrase ‘low-maintenance’ will likely be high on the list. Maybe even ‘no-maintenance’ from those with little garden knowledge. Does this type of garden exist? In the latter example, the answer is an easy ‘no’. But low-maintenance is definitely achievable. It’s largely down to the choice of plants and ratio of lawn or paving to beds and borders.
No digging
This is exactly as it sounds – gardening without digging. This allows mycorrhizal networks of fungi to spread. Plants require less water and fertiliser because the fungi, in effect, extend the root system of plants so that they have a wider area in which to source nutrients and moisture. It’s good for the environment as the soil develops better drainage. It also contains more carbon and is less prone to lose nutrients in water runoff during rainy periods. You can add mulch to the soil, when required (early winter is best). Plant directly into the soil – you will be surprised how quickly things become established and start growing.
Mind the gaps
Fill any blank soil spaces with plants to prevent weeds from growing. Nature fills a void! Plant shrubs for the easiest gardening experience, but be sure to select wisely.
Right plant, right place
A plant in the wrong place will always need attention. If you’re not sure what type of plants are suited to the soil in your area, take a look at your neighbour’s gardens. Evergreens provide year-round interest, but they are not necessarily those with the most interesting flowers. Watering
is a high-maintenance requirement, as are the tasks of weeding and deadheading. Gardening is a balance between practical solutions and aesthetic interest, and much of your choice will be based on personal preference.
Can lawns be low-maintenance?
Some say that a lawn represents the most intensive maintenance requirement of any garden feature which explains why artificial grass has become so popular. But contrary to popular belief, fake lawns are not maintenancefree. Weed seeds will eventually take hold and weeding a lawn of this nature is not easy. Artificial turf also requires washing, on occasions, especially when used as a toilet by dogs and cats. Artificial grass is an emotive topic and there is still a lack of scientific knowledge and a shortage of research when it comes to assessing the environmental impact of such a relatively new product.
However, there’s no doubt that professionally installed artificial turf will cut down on maintenance when compared to a living lawn that requires regular mowing. The lack of biodiversity on a fake lawn is an obvious drawback, but some say that we should view them as another non-living component of a garden, similar to a patio.
