Do you suffer from:
The Gardening Season!
Back or neck pain
As a nation, we love our gardens and spend a considerable amount of time and money on them. As we rush to get those jobs in the garden done, there is a risk that gardeners may injure themselves. What everyone wants is to be fit and healthy enough to actually enjoy sitting in their garden and enjoy the fruits of their labours come summer time, so here are some helpful tips from Discover Chiropractic! CLOTHES • Don’t wear clothes that are tight or could constrict your movement. WARM UP • Gardening is like any other exercise; you need to warm up first. Don’t go straight into heavy garden work; start off with lighter jobs as this will lessen the chance of muscle strain. USING A LADDER • When using a ladder or steps, make sure you are always facing it, keeping your shoulders, hips and knees pointing in the same direction. • Rather than leaning or reaching, move the ladder or step regularly to keep up with where you are. • Any kind of ladder must be firmly and safely planted in position and, if possible, have someone else there to keep an eye on things. TAKE A BREAK • Vary your activity by spending no more than 20-30 minutes on any one thing and make sure you take regular breaks. BE CLEVER WITH THE PAVING • If laying a patio, keep the slab close to your body and bend your knees; it is sometimes better to bend one knee rather than two, as your supporting leg gives you a position of strength. • If using railway sleepers, two people will probably be needed.
CLEVER PRUNING • Get as close as possible to the things you are pruning and avoid overstretching to reach the area you are dealing with. • Invest in some long handled secateurs to reach plants and bushes that are beyond normal reach. PLAN AHEAD • If you are planning a trip to the local DIY store to buy heavy items such as cement or gravel, buy smaller bags rather than one big bag as they are easier and safer to carry. • If you do buy heavy items, use a trolley and if on your own, ask an assistant at the store to help you. • If buying things like compost, sand or gravel in bulkier amounts, shovel the contents of the large bags straight into smaller containers or wheelbarrow from the back of the car. • Don’t lift with your arms straight out, keep the elbows bent and to your side to minimise the stress on your back. • If having items delivered, have them unloaded as close to where you need them as possible; this will save the effort of moving them again. • A specialist garden trolley might be worth investing in to move these sorts of materials around, especially if you have lots of patio pots to move around as well.

www.murrayfieldcc.org.uk Traffic and Transport
It is thought that the Council may make a decision on the introduction of Controlled Parking Zones in parts of the city before the Council elections on 5 May 2022. Work on the Roseburn to Haymarket section of the City Centre West to East Cycle Link and Street Improvements Project (“CCWEL”) began on 7 February 2022. The MCC meeting was attended by Rurigdh Ahluwahlia-McMeddes, Senior Project Manager - Active Travel, City of Edinburgh Council, Scott Ritchie of contractor, Balfour Beatty and Virginia Munoz Rucian, Anturas Consulting. The first hour was dominated by discussion on the effect of the CCWEL works on Roseburn businesses and local residents and drivers. The local business owners were vocal about the adverse impact on their businesses of the works and the changes to the parking and loading arrangements, in particular, and are pressing the Council for a compensation scheme. Information on the various stages of the work, the traffic management arrangements and the timetable can be found at www.edinburgh.gov.uk/ccwel.

The planning and LBC applications are still “awaiting decision”. 9 and 11 Corstorphine Road - Parallel applications have been filed for consent to convert the pair of existing Victorian 1.5-storey cottages to a 2.5-storey contemporary building. The Comfort Book – Matt Haig Author Matt Haig has been very open about his struggles with depression. His latest book is a collection of sayings, thoughts and recollections that offer comfort when times are hard. Many of us find it difficult to focus when we’re feeling down, anxious or burnt out. With The Comfort Book, you can just flick through and read the quote that catches your eye. That might be a story snippet, a list, music recommendations or a recipe. Stolen Focus: Why You Can’t Pay Attention – Johann Hari We often berate ourselves for spending too much time scrolling through social media or getting distracted when we should be concentrating. Johann Hari explains why the inability to focus is not a personal failing – it’s an all-too-common side effect of modern life. Crucially, he also shares science-backed advice to help you reclaim your ability to focus.

Broken (in the best possible way) – Jenny Lawson We all need a good belly laugh sometimes. Broken gives you that, plus so much more. As the blurb says, it’s a book about ‘living, surviving and thriving with anxiety’. It’s written like a stream of consciousness in parts, as Lawson shares anecdotes and lessons from her life. Raw, honest, relatable. The Sleep Book – Dr Guy Meadows Anyone who struggles to sleep knows the impact it can have on daily life. The Sleep Book isn’t a recent release, but it’s one of the most wellresearched – Dr Meadows has worked with more than 2,000 insomniacs. The result is a five-week plan to solve insomnia, mainly focusing on mindfulness and ACT (‘act and commitment’) therapy. It’s not a magic cure, but the advice is practical and easy to follow. Reflections – Holly Willoughby In Reflections, TV presenter Holly Willoughby shares her ‘toolkit’ for living a happier, more connected life. She talks of the rituals, techniques and positive habits that have helped her to reconnect, tackle anxiety and feel more grounded. It’s a deeply personal book – she discusses body image, burnout and other challenges – but it’s not an autobiography. While most of us don’t lead a celebrity lifestyle, there are still many nuggets of wisdom that readers will find useful. 26

A message from family friends in the Ukraine. Please Help! By John Barrett - former local Member of Parliament and Councillor Many years ago, I offered to do some pro bono work for a Scottish charity. At that time, I made corporate films and videos. The charity asked me to go to Kiev, to make them a fund-raising film, in order to help children there, who were suffering from cancer, following the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Sadly, many of the children I met died in the years following, as their tumours were detected too late to be saved by the treatment available to them. One family I met became good friends and we have remained in constant contact for over 25 years. Some years later, my wife and I brought the daughters of that family to Edinburgh for a holiday, as they were the same age as our own daughter. Twenty-five years on, those same daughters, both now married, have had to flee Kyiv with their children, driving for three days, in heavy snow on back roads, being constantly stopped by armed guards at checkpoints, sleeping in refugee camps, to escape to safety. While also having to say goodbye to their husbands, who are not allowed to leave, and their parents, who are in their 60s, but their father is too ill to travel.
When war broke out, we offered them all a place to stay with us; if they could get here, but at that time they did not qualify for a UK visa, as they had no relatives here. Thankfully, it looks like this is now changing and they may yet come to Edinburgh; if the parents can get out of Kyiv, if they are well enough to travel and if they can get a visa. In order to help some of the many families like them, I have organised a fundraising concert on April 30 th. Thanks to the Grapevine for the free advert opposite, you can see all the details, and thanks to the Rotary Club, P Blackhall Ltd., TaxAssist Accountants and Jacks 1 Civil Engineers, who have all made generous donations to support the event, I will be able to raise a good amount to send off at the end of April. If you can help in any way or donate to help boost the total raised, please contact me by email on barrett.john@btconnect.com or phone me on 0780 1057 446. Thanks. 32

www.alexanders-electrical.co.uk Did you know that there are children who do not go on family holidays, day trips or visiting relatives because of a variety of reasons? Well, for some children the only similar experience they benefit from annually is a school trip! For that reason I will be raising money for them with my cycling efforts.
Thank you for any support you can donate for them.

Cycling a thousand miles in ten days might read like a bridge too far for some but for others this is considered a great experience. This summer I will be cycling from Land’s End to John o’Groats and raising money in the name of the parent council of St Andrews primary school.

PLANT A TREE FOR THE JUBILEE: THE QUEEN’S GREEN CANOPY Plant a tree for the jubilee Her Majesty the Queen has enjoyed 70 years on the throne this year and we are urged to ‘plant a tree for the jubilee’ to create the Queen’s Green Canopy. This national tree initiative encourages everyone to plant trees – from a single garden specimen to an entire woodland. It is hoped that individuals, community groups, schools, businesses and councils will all take part in a bid to green up the UK and help fight the climate crisis. Trees absorb pollution, store carbon, produce oxygen, stabilise the soil, help prevent flooding, improve biodiversity and provide shelter. Some trees are better than others in terms of eco credentials. Oak, beech, London plane, black walnut, many larger maples and eucalyptus are some of the best at carbon storage, and larger trees are generally better than smaller varieties. Broadleaved species have a larger surface area of leaves, which enables them to carry out photosynthesis. They absorb water, sunlight and carbon dioxide in order to produce oxygen. Oaks are kings of the habitat providers, but smaller trees, including a wide range of birch, are excellent too. Some smaller trees and shrubs excel at this particular role, including elder, spindle, blackthorn, wild cherry, crab apple, hawthorn and holly. The key lies in planting a diverse mix of species in order to provide as many benefits as possible to wildlife. Think in terms of food sources as well as creatures. Insects are just as important when considering the food chain. Pests and diseases Avoid planting a monoculture of one species of tree, as disease can potentially kill the entire group. This applies to street trees as much as it does to hedges, copses and woodland. Instead, include a mix of species, which will be more resilient. It is also sensible to extend the range 38

of trees in the UK to include non-native, hardy trees. Always source trees from reliable, ‘planthealthy’ suppliers. Be aware of the general health of trees, including disease that causes loss of limbs, thus posing a safety risk in public places. Ash dieback is likely to cause the loss of up to 80 per cent of this tree in the UK. Affected trees near public areas should be removed. Phytophthora ramorum is sometimes called a water mould. It causes bleeding canker symptoms on trees, including larch and sweet chestnut in addition to conifers such as Douglas fir. It can also cause sudden oak death. Phytophthora pluvialis has recently been discovered in western hemlock and Douglas fir in the West Country. It causes needles to turn brown and drop, eventually resulting in dieback. Oak processionary moth is an insect pest present in London and surrounding counties. There are silken nests and processions of caterpillars that defoliate oak trees, thus leaving them vulnerable and unable to carry out photosynthesis. The fungal disease massaria is spreading amongst London plane trees, including those at Buckingham Palace and some of the royal parks. It causes lesions on branches, which die back and are eventually shed. By Caroline Knight: Gardendesignideas.co.uk

Given the uncertainty, stress and grief we’ve all experienced in various measures over the last couple of years, it will come as no surprise to hear that mental health issues are on the rise. Two of the most common mental health disorders in the UK are depression and anxiety. While people suffering from depression may experience low moods, fatigue, insomnia and decreased self-esteem, anxiety manifests itself through feelings of panic, nausea and shortness of breath. It’s possible to be diagnosed with both. While self-care practices such as exercise, a good diet and counselling can be effective in treating depression and anxiety, you should always speak to a medical professional if your symptoms don’t improve. Whether or not you’re offered medication will depend on your diagnosis, symptoms and how severely they’re affecting your daily life. These are the key treatments prescribed by doctors in the UK. Antidepressants Antidepressants are by far the most well-known medicine group for treating mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. Although not fully understood, it’s believed that they work by increasing levels of certain chemicals in your brain that help improve your mood. There are several different types of
antidepressants, each with various potential side effects. Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are believed to have the fewest, while older medicines such as tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and mono-amine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) sit on the opposite end of the scale. Antipsychotics Antipsychotic medications are generally used to treat psychotic disorders but can also be prescribed for severe cases of anxiety and depression. These block the effect of dopamine, a chemical that carries messages across your brain that’s been known to cause symptoms often associated with mental illness. There are two types; typical or ‘first-generation’ medications have been used since the 1950s, while atypical or ‘second-generation’ antipsychotics were introduced in the 1990s. Although both can cause changes to your body, first-generation antipsychotics are known to cause more side effects than their successors. Mood stabilisers Mood stabilisers are a type of medication that can help with mood swings caused by mania, hypomania and depression. They help to control and ‘even out’ these mood swings.

Ltd.
There are three main types, lithium, anticonvulsants and antipsychotics, and they’re often used to treat depression as part of bipolar disorder. This is because, although antidepressant medications can be effective, using them on someone with bipolar disorder could turn a depressive episode into mania. This risk is lower if the person is also taking a mood stabiliser.
38
Benzodiazepines Usually prescribed for more severe cases of anxiety, benzodiazepines – or ‘benzos’ – are a type of sedative. They’re typically prescribed on a short-term basis because they can become addictive if taken for longer than a month. Benzodiazepines are also used to treat insomnia and alcohol withdrawal. If you suffer from sleep problems, you’re more likely to be prescribed hypnotics, whereas anxiolytics are used to treat those with anxiety. There is no shame in asking for help. Putting up with prolonged negative feelings and thinking you just need to pull yourself together, is just ignoring the problem. 42

Preparation time 15 minutes Cooking time 10 minutes Serves 2 Ingredients • 2 boneless salmon or trout fillets, about 120g each, skin on Dressing • 2 tbsp walnut oil • 1 tbsp olive oil • 2 tbsp capers • Juice of ½ lemon • Zest of 1 lemon • 1 tsp Dijon mustard • 2 tbsp chopped fresh herbs e.g. parsley, basil • Salt and freshly ground black pepper Salad • 6 new potatoes, halved • 60g French beans, halved • Bag of mixed lettuce leaves • ½ cucumber, cut into ribbons • 1 tbsp capers • 10 cherry tomatoes, halved • 30g black or green olives, pitted • 1 hard-boiled egg, cut into quarters
This is a delicious protein-packed salad full of beneficial omega-3 anti-inflammatory fats, and using walnut oil in the dressing is an easy way to further boost your intake of these healthy fats. This creamy dressing is equally delicious drizzled over any cooked fish or seafood. Method 1. Bring a large steamer to the boil, tip the potatoes into the water then lay the fish fillets, skin-side down, in the steamer basket. Cover and cook for 6-8 mins, until the fish is cooked through, then remove and set aside. 2. Blanch the beans for 1-2 minutes then drain. 3. Place the mixed leaves in a large bowl and toss in the potatoes, cucumber, capers and beans. Scatter over the olives and tomatoes. 4. Flake the fish into large chunks, discarding the skin, and add to the salad with the egg. 5. Whisk all the ingredients for the dressing together and season to taste. Drizzle over the salad just before serving.

From make-up tips to haircare advice, these tips could make your life easier.
1
When you paint your nails, start from your little finger rather than your thumb. You’ll lower the risk of smudging your freshly painted nails.
8
Leave your facial cleanser to soak in for a few minutes before wiping it off. It’ll act as a mini face pack. This works particularly well with balm cleansers.
2
Matte lipstick is on-trend but very unforgiving. Before using it, mix a dash of olive oil with half a teaspoon of brown sugar to treat your lips to a DIY lip scrub.
9
3
Clean your make-up brushes regularly with facial cleanser or a mild shampoo. Rinse thoroughly and leave to air dry.
10
4
11
Don’t test foundation on your hand – you won’t get a good colour match. Instead, try it on your jawline.
5
Wrap a small scoop of porridge oats up in a muslin cloth and tie the ends to secure. Drop it in your bath while the water is running. The oat oils work wonders on dry skin.
6
Leave at least a day between shaving/waxing and applying fake tan. Otherwise, you risk causing irritation and ending up with a patchy tan.
7
Not keen on heavily fragranced body oils? Switch to pure almond oil. Add a few drops of essential oil if you want a hint of natural fragrance.
Apply eye cream with your ring finger. It’s the weakest so you’re less likely to pull at the skin. Dab (rather than rub) the cream in.
ALL ASPECTS OF SLATING TILING l LEAD WORK l GUTTERING ROOF REPAIRS l RENDERING l FLAT ROOF SPECIALISTS ALL EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL PAINTING & DECORATING l
If you often forget to apply SPF in the cooler months, try swapping your foundation for a tinted SPF cream.
Hair feeling lank or lacklustre? Try switching to a shampoo that’s free from sulphates and silicones. Sulphates can strip hair of its natural, healthy oils, while silicones can build up over time and weigh hair down.
12
Put wet hair in multiple plaits before bed for easy curls the next day. Brush through if you want looser waves.
13
Freshly washed hair is harder to style. So if you have a big night out coming up, wash your hair the day before. It’ll then hold its style better for your evening out.
14
Rather than splashing out on expensive travel-sized products (they can be more than double the price per ml), decant your usual products into small reusable containers.
15
Do you subscribe to Birchbox or a similar subscription box? Save the products you don’t fancy throughout the year. By Christmas, you’ll have a stack of cracker prizes and stocking fillers. You could even use them to fill a personalised advent calendar for a friend.
16
Skin and hair changes as we age, so what worked for you a few years ago may not be as effective today. Embrace the chance to try something new!

If you’re looking for a fun way to get fit, why not try martial arts? You’ll improve your coordination and flexibility, it’s a great way to meet people, and it can really boost your confidence. And you’re never too old to learn. Many clubs offer adult or mixed classes.
Clubs usually offer taster sessions for free or at a reduced rate, so you could try a few types to see which one most appeals. How to learn You’ll want to join a club that’s registered with a governing body, such as the Tae Kwon-Do Association of Great Britain or The British Karate Association. Make sure that the club is fully insured and check the senior instructor’s credentials. If you’re hoping to compete, you may want to choose a larger club that has been successful in tournaments. If you’re just looking for a fun activity, you might prefer a smaller club with a family atmosphere. It’s worth asking for recommendations on social media and within your friendship group. What you’ll need For most martial arts, you’ll need to buy an outfit, such as a dobok (tae kwon-do) or gi (karate, 54
judo, aikido, and jiujitsu). However, clubs will usually let you wear normal sports clothes for your first few sessions. It’s a good idea to wait to buy the outfit until you’ve spoken to your instructor, as they may need you to wear a uniform that’s branded with the club logo or that’s been approved by their parent association. Branded outfits tend to cost around £30 to £40, but non-branded gis are often a lot cheaper. You can also pick up second-hand outfits on eBay and dedicated Facebook selling groups.

As you progress, you may need more equipment, such as a sparring kit. Again, these can often be picked up second-hand. How much it costs Costs vary depending on the type of martial art. You’ll likely need to pay an annual membership fee of £20 to £40, plus a monthly payment for classes. Some clubs do offer a ‘pay as you go’ membership, however. Gradings (where you move onto the next level or belt) cost extra, as do tournaments. If you’re worried about the cost, the best thing to do is speak to the club’s senior instructor. They’ll be able to give you a good idea of how much you can expect to spend over the year.

Which martial art to choose There are several types of martial art to choose from. It’s worth finding out a bit more about all the different ones that are offered in your local area. Are you mainly looking for a way to keep fit or do you want to learn self-defence? Do you want to take part in competitions? Do you want to learn to fight with weapon such as swords or sticks, or would you rather focus on unarmed combat?

June’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations mark an extraordinary 70 years since Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne, surpassing the previous record held by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, who reigned for 63 years. Born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary on 21st April 1926 at 17 Bruton Street, London, the girl nicknamed Lilibet wasn’t destined to be Queen. She was the eldest daughter of Prince Albert and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, Duke and Duchess of York. The Duke, a shy man with a pronounced stammer, was the younger brother of Edward who was heir to the throne, and the family of four with their two daughters were anticipating a quiet life without the heavy responsibilities of rule. However, an event that shocked the nation was to propel Elizabeth into the spotlight and take her on a quite different path. Only twelve months after his coronation, Edward VIII’s love for a twice-divorced American woman, Wallace Simpson, led him to abdicate. It may seem strange to us now, but even into the 1960s it was strictly taboo for a sovereign, or member of the Royal family, to marry a divorcee. As second in line to the throne, Edward’s brother Albert had to take his place. Crowned King George VI on 11th December 1936 at 40 years old, Princess Elizabeth, then ten, became heir. From that point, her education and upbringing focused on the fact she would one day be Queen.
In 1947, Elizabeth married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten in Westminster Abbey. They settled in Clarence House and two years later Prince Charles was born. Although still only 55 years old, in the summer of 1951 King George’s health began to fail and the young Princess Elizabeth had to undertake her first official duty when she stepped in to represent her father at the Trooping of the Colour. That autumn, Elizabeth and Philip departed for a tour of Canada and Washington DC, where the young couple was enthusiastically received. In January 1952, they set out for another tour of Australia and New Zealand. However, on 6th February, while en route in Kenya, the King died of a coronary thrombosis at Sandringham. Elizabeth immediately flew back as Queen. She was just 25 years old. After three months of private mourning for her beloved father, Queen Elizabeth moved into Buckingham Palace and began to start the routine duties expected of a monarch. She took her role seriously, conducting her first state opening of Parliament in November 1952. Her coronation was held at Westminster Abbey on 2nd June 1953. Controversially, Prince Philip was instrumental in having the ceremony televised. Both the Queen and her husband subsequently worked to modernise the monarchy while retaining its traditional sense of public duty and creed of “never complain, never explain.”

Like all of us, Queen Elizabeth has lived through difficult times, and last year lost her husband and life companion. But despite bouts of ill health herself, she has stoically continued her duties. Now, aged 96 and still head of the Commonwealth, she has lived a life of service to her country and is admired, respected and loved around the globe. By Catherine Rose
CORSTORPHINE SCOTTISH WOMEN’S INSTITUTES (SWI) Also known as ‘The Rural’ Corstorphine SWI (previously known as Corstorphine Rural) is the only remaining branch of the Scottish Women’s Institutes in West Edinburgh and celebrates its 100th year birthday in October 2022. During its existence it has been an integral part of the local community participating in many local initiatives. Our centenary year is a significant milestone for the Institute and a number of events and activities are being organised to celebrate this achievement. An exhibition to show the history of Corstorphine Scottish Women’s Rural Institute and how it has developed over the years to become Corstorphine SWI is being held, with support from The Corstorphine Trust, in the Dower House from 31st May – 4th June. Members of the Trust are also giving a talk on ‘Corstorphine in 1922’ to the Institute in September. A successful application for funding from the West Edinburgh Neighbourhood Network Community Grants enables us to restart our monthly handcrafts group with visiting demonstrators, organise a centenary meal for our members and a bus trip to Galashiels to the Great Tapestry of Scotland. An additional funding application, if successful, will enable a couple of meetings later in the year which would be open to non members. Corstorphine SWI meets in the Astoria Centre, Kirk Loan, on the second Tuesday of each month (except July and August) from 2.30 – 4.30 pm Why not come along and give us a try? Women of any age are welcome to join us as visitors at any of our meetings. You may like it enough to join the SWI or you can join us as a visitor before deciding to become a member – or not. We have meetings with speakers or sometimes a chat and cuppa with quizzes, social outings, a monthly craft group restarting with some demonstrations being planned and support for members with tablets and iPads by a friendly SWI Digital Champion. Even although our ladies did not meet face to face for 2 years during the pandemic, Corstorphine SWI remains strong and is looking forward to many more years. During the pandemic and restrictions many of our members embraced new technology to learn Zoom so we could continue our meetings virtually. We also met for walks and coffees to keep in contact and have a blether. Please come and say hello at our stall at the Corstorphine Fair, and also at the exhibition in the Dower House. Our members will be happy to answer any questions and explain what we do. The SWI is “an inclusive, forward thinking organisation which brings women together to share their heritage, develop skills, find support and form friendships”. It provides opportunities at local and National levels to bring Women together where they can learn, share knowledge, experiences and interests, have fun and respect all women as individuals.
