Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Corstorphine Grapevine, your local business directory.
We are in spring now – yay! The clocks have gone forward, meaning evenings are longer and, when the sun does come out, it’s not just brighter, it’s actually warm. And there are bank holidays to come. Yay again!
As usual the Grapevine is bursting with many local businesses so give them a call if you need their service, and please remember to mention The Grapevine when you do.
Have a look through the entire publication, there are adverts from different local groups and also information about the Corstorphine Fair (page 29) which this year takes place on Saturday 6th of June - an event not to be missed. I have also included a page of information regarding Defibrillators, their location and how to use - a fabulous suggestion by a local reader. Many thanks.
Your next publication will cover the months of July/August/September and will be distributed in the first week of July. Summer is just around the corner !!
Take care and best wishes From Jill

Seen the film? Now read the book that inspired the adaptation.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J K Rowling J K Rowling’s debut novel has captivated readers worldwide since 1997. It’s about young Harry, an orphaned boy living with his dreadful relatives, who learns the truth about his parents’ death and receives an invitation to attend Hogwarts, a magical school for wizards. By 2001, Warner Bros had brought the story to the big screen with Daniel Radcliffe as Harry.

Schindler’s Ark by Thomas Keneally
The story of Oskar Schindler, a German industrialist who risked his life every day to save as many Polish Jews as possible during the Holocaust by employing them in his enamelware and ammunition factories, protecting them from extermination. Made into the awardwinning film “Schindler’s List” by Steven Spielberg, it won seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
Originally published in 1979, this science fiction comedy novel gained a massive cult following over the years. It’s an ordinary Thursday lunchtime for Arthur Dent until his house gets demolished. The Earth follows shortly afterwards, and his best friend announces he’s an alien! The 2005 big-screen adaptation grossed more than $100 million worldwide.
Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell
In her heart-stopping story behind Shakespeare’s most famous play, “Hamlet”, O’Farrell resurrects the short life of Hamnet, the Bard’s only son, in this work of historical fiction. It is a story of the bond between twins, and of a marriage pushed to the brink by grief. This number one bestseller inspired the 2025 award-winning film of the same name, starring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal.
The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje
Set in an abandoned Italian village, Hana, a nurse, tends to her sole remaining patient. Rescued from a burning plane, the anonymous Englishman is damaged beyond recognition and haunted by painful memories. The only clue she has to unlocking his past is the one thing he clung on to through the fire – a copy of “The Histories” by Herodotus, covered with handwritten notes detailing a tragic love affair.
Other adaptations: Blue Therapy
This YouTube series has been adapted for TV by Netflix. It invites viewers into a therapy room where real couples are working through intense issues, guided by a trained couples therapist. Upon its debut, “The Guardian” hailed the web show as “the most explosive reality show of the year”. Released March 2026.

As your only local, independent, family-owned funeral director we feel it is important that you are aware of exactly what a Direct Cremation entails. A stand alone Direct Cremation, as you might see advertised on TV has no service for family or friends at all.
It is quite simply a removal of your loved one, followed by the return of the cremated remains some weeks later.
It is often the case that your loved one is transported to a central cremation hub far from their home.
We do offer Direct Cremation, but unlike many of the offers advertised on TV, we will look after your loved one locally and continue to offer the additional services you have come to expect from us.
Feel free to come in for a chat about the wide range of options we offer.

1. If a shock is needed, the device will say “shock advised”.
2. Ensure no one is touching the patient and press the orange flash button, if prompted. Some devices are fully automatic and will deliver the shock for you. 1. 2.
Continue CPR: Immediately resume CPR after the shock is delivered (or if no shock is advised). Continue until help arrives or the person shows signs of life.

Pay attention when people talk about the sudden onset of bizarre and unusual ailments. This is especially true at this time of year. The answer can be found in a little word with big implications: stress. Our bodies endure stress, which can be simply defined as anything that causes a reaction. There are three main areas in which we experience stress: physical, emotional and chemical. Stress involving any of these areas can affect us profoundly. Here are some of the common signs of stress, along with ways to reduce your stress burden.
Unusual fatigue: Stress weighs on you physically, emotionally and mentally. It wears you down and drains you. Can’t get out of bed in the morning? Stress may be what’s keeping you there.
Sleeplessness: You may feel like sleeping for a day or two, but stress tends to keep you up at night.
Impulsivity: If you find your eating habits changing suddenly, you may be turning to comfort foods to deal with stress. The same is true with impulse buying, particularly when it involves items you don’t really need.
Anger/impatience: Stress can make you short-tempered and easily roused to anger, even if your demeanour is normally calm, quiet and reserved.
Lack of concentration/forgetfulness: Stress usually occupies our mental time, so much so that we can have trouble remembering things or make more mistakes. Never forget your keys in the morning? When you’re stressed, you just might.
Physical ailments: Back pain, neck pain and pain in general that doesn’t have a clear cause (e.g., an injury) is often related to stress. The same is true for colds and flu; stress can lower your immune system, increasing your risk of developing illness.
Work it off: Find the time to exercise. Whether it’s a quick trip to the gym, a peaceful run or a brisk walk with family or friends, exercise puts the focus somewhere else for a while. Biochemically, exercise has a big anti-stress benefit. It helps reduce levels of the stress hormone (cortisol) and increases your “feel-good” hormones, endorphins.
Get away from it: This can be challenging, but doing what you can to distract yourself can go a long way toward reducing stress. Schedule a holiday, visit old friends, take a long walk; whatever it takes to remove yourself from your stress environment.
Smile about it: It’s much harder for stress to exist in a fun, laughter-filled environment, so put yourself in a position to smile when you’re under stress. After all, laughter truly is the best natural medicine.
Talk about it: When you’re stressed, your mind can be a continual stream of negative, overwhelming, stressed-out thoughts. Don’t keep it all to yourself; sometimes the best way to reduce your stress is to vent about it and get a neutral perspective, rather than staying in a bottled-up, stressed-out state.

The Corstorphine Fair is held every two years on the first Saturday in June. It turns St Margaret’s Park into a lively community celebration filled with stalls, live entertainment, family rides and plenty of fun for all ages. Proudly regarded as Edinburgh’s largest communityrun event, the Fair brings together local people and organisations for a memorable day out in the heart of Corstorphine.
The modern Fair first took place in 1986. Although traditional village fairs had faded, occasional events were held in the early 20th century, including one in 1960. This year we are delighted to mark the 20th Fair in the current series, exactly 40 years since it all began in 1986.
Over the years we have enjoyed many sunny Fairs with large, happy crowds. After another very wet spring, we are keeping our fingers crossed for good weather this time and that the park is ready for everyone. (We really hope we won’t need to call in the ‘JCB man’!)
Over the last year we have worked hard to bring you another great day. We have kept the things that make the Fair special. The popular Parade of Pipers returns to the arena, and central ticketing for the bouncy castles and thrill slides is back with small improvements to help things run even more smoothly. We are doing our best to keep queues short, so thank you in advance for your patience.
What truly makes our Fair unique are the 70 local groups and organisations who run stalls across the park. These stalls create the special atmosphere
that visitors love. We warmly invite you to take your time, visit as many as possible, and meet the dedicated people behind them. Between them, these groups have raised around £400,000 over the past ten Fairs — an incredible achievement for our community.
None of this would be possible without the generous support of local sponsors, the donations from our visitors, income from the rides, and the 20% contribution from participating groups. We are extremely grateful to everyone who has helped, whether by donating, volunteering, or simply coming along to enjoy the day.
From all of us on the committee, thank you for your continued support. We hope you have a safe, happy and memorable family day with us at the Twentieth Corstorphine Fair.

don’t have to go into town for entertainment, a meal out or to see friends, as we can also do many things locally, and here are just some of them.
A quick look at the Corstorphine Trust and Astoria Centre websites will give you a chance to buy tickets for everything from How To Sleep better with a talk from Richard Wiseman on May 10th, Historic Walks in Corstorphine Village and a concert on 23rd May by the ever popular Applebeggars, performing classic hits from the 60s and 70 and original songs. They have previously performed sold out concerts in the Astoria Hall to help raise funds to support everything from The Corstorphine Youth Centre, Teenage Cancer Trust, Families in Ukraine and The Maggie’s Centre at the Western General.

Across the road from the Astoria Centre in Kirk Loan is the Corstorphine Community Centre (CCC) whose website www. corstorphinecommunitycentre.org.uk is packed full of things to do, classes to join and groups you can support. Why not pop in to see what they can offer you or what you might want to help them with, including their charity shop, which is open 10am-3pm Monday to Friday.

St. Margaret’s Park, Gyle Park, and Union Park all have friends’ groups, who help improve the parks and work with local residents and the council to improve their facilities. If you have time to spare, they all welcome volunteers.
After a summer break The Corstorphine Literary and Geographical Society (The Lit) will once again arrange a monthly programme of talks and presentations up to December. This year’s talks have ranged from The Beechgrove Garden presenter, George Anderson to Fisherrow Fishwives and everyone is welcome. Watch out for posters advertising the talks which are held in St Ninian’s Church on the first Monday of the month at 7.45pm.

Last but not least, on Saturday 6th June from 10am to 4pm The Corstorphine Fair will be on in St. Margaret’s Park, which is always a great day out for all the family. The Fair has been on every two years for 40 years making this the 20th Anniversary and is now the largest community event in Edinburgh. I will be there and hope you can make it too.

Make one large pizza, bursting with flavour and crunch, or four individual ones – just divide the dough accordingly. A large one may take longer to cook.
Serves 4
Preparation time 20-25 minutes, plus 30 minutes proving time Cooking time 12-15 minutes
Ingredients
• 500g strong white flour, plus extra for dusting
• 1 tsp easy-blend yeast
• 1⁄2 tsp caster sugar For the topping
• 300g Jersey Royals, sliced thinly
• 75g asparagus spears, woody ends trimmed
• 250g ricotta cheese
• 75g mangetout
• 75g peas, defrosted if frozen
• 100g grated mozzarella
• 15g Parmesan cheese, freshly grated
• Olive oil, for drizzling
• 50g fresh pea shoots
Method
1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast and sugar with 1⁄2 teaspoon salt and 400ml tepid water. Mix into a dough, tip it out onto a work surface and knead for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Return to the bowl, cover loosely with a tea towel and leave to rise in a warm place for 30 minutes or until doubled in size.
2. Bring a pan of water to the boil, add the potato slices and simmer for 5-6 minutes until just soft. Add the asparagus for 1 minute, then drain and refresh in cold water. Beat the ricotta smooth.
3. Preheat the oven to 220°C, fan 200°C, gas mark 7 and dust a couple of baking trays with a little flour.
4. Divide the dough into 4 portions (if making separate pizzas) and roll out or hand-stretch as thinly as you can. Spread with the beaten ricotta, then top with the potato, asparagus, mangetout and peas. Scatter over the mozzarella and Parmesan and bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes until golden and the base is crisp. Serve hot, drizzled with olive oil and with the pea shoots scattered over.
Jersey’s seasonal potatoes are available to buy from April to July. For more information and recipe inspiration, visit www.jerseyroyals.co.uk.
