Murrayfield Grapevine
June/July/Aug
2023 edition
Hello and welcome to your latest edition of the Corstorphine Grapevine, your local business directory.
As you know in addition to offering you the services of many local companies I always try to include local and community information. Please find this throughout the publication.
I also include any information supplied by charities. The pandemic meant that a lot of regular donations were cancelled, and many are still not back at the income levels that they had in 2019. Add to that the pressures of the increasing cost of living and what they can do with the money that they receive and it is hard. Volunteers are always welcome too. If you are involved in a charity and would like something included in the directory please contact me.
This month I am also delighted to include information for the Royal Botanic Garden - please see page 2.
The dates for diary page this month (page 34) includes school summer holidays - which are quickly approaching. I hope that you find this information useful.

A row of double-height apartments at Artisan Real Estate’s acclaimed Rowanbank Gardens homes development in Corstorphine is proving a high-flying success with buyers.
Each of the six roomy two-bedroom apartments have an extra double-height pitched roof, allowing for lots of natural light to flood through both the full height and Velux roof windows creating a distinctive loftstyle feel to the interior living space.
Home buyers looking for something different have already reserved four apartments, with the remaining two currently attracting significant interest. Work on the development began in summer 2021, with the first moveins expected in the summer and, so far, home sales have been buoyant with more than a third of apartments now sold.
“The double-height apartments are just one of the many reasons why Rowanbank Gardens is having such a broad appeal to a
wide range of buyers,’ explains Izzy Bastiani, Artisan’s New Homes Sales Advisor.
“Another major draw is the development’s smart, energy-efficient design - which means delivering green, low-cost energy. Research shows that average annual hot water and heating costs for a two-bedroom apartment at Rowanbank Gardens could be as low as £775 per year - or less than £65 per monthproviding long-term cost savings for first-time budget-conscious buyers or purchasers looking for more energy efficient living.”
Prices for a one-bedroom apartment at Rowanbank Gardens start from £245,000, with a two-bedroom from £320,000 and a three-bedroom from £420,000 making the development a perfect destination for first-time buyers and downsizers wanting to live in well-connected, bustling community just minutes from the city centre.
To register interest in Rowanbank Gardens and book an appointment at the new on-site sales and marketing suite, visit the development website at www.rowanbankgardens.com or call 0131 516 3302

Weddings have changed drastically over the last few decades, with each year bringing with it a brand new set of trends. In the past, almost every aspect of a wedding would be rooted in age-old traditions; nowadays, however, more and more couples are tying the knot in a way that reflects their individual taste and personality. With the wedding season now upon us, let’s take a look at how wedding traditions have changed over the last few decades.
In the 70s and 80s, the trendiest wedding dresses featured high necklines, puffy sleeves and a long train to match. In the twenty-first century, it’s a completely different story. Strapless, backless, lace, mermaid-style, mid-length and everything in between – the options are endless.
Who says you have to wear one dress, anyway?
Many brides now don a more traditional gown for the ceremony before changing into a ‘party’ dress for the reception.
The ceremony
Do you suffer from:
Back or neck pain
Joint, ligament or tendon sprains
Muscle tears or strains
Work-related arm pain (RSI)
Frozen shoulder
Tennis or Golfer’s elbow
Arthritis or generalised joint pains
Headaches
Stiffness following fracture or injury
Traditionally, the etiquette for a marriage proposal was to ask for the bride’s father’s permission before tying the knot. Today, many couples forgo this prenuptial step due to its outdated notion that the bride is a possession to be ‘handed over’ from one guardian to the next.
Weddings have always been lavish affairs, but since the industry’s exponential boom over the last decade, prices have only been rising. Today, the average cost of a wedding in the UK is £18,400, but it’s not uncommon for couples to spend over £30,000 on their special day. It used to be customary for the bride’s parents to pay, but nowadays it’s not unusual for the couple themselves to cover the costs
Traditionally, it was standard practice for the father to accompany the bride down the aisle before ‘giving her away’. Today, however, more and more brides choose to make the journey on their own. Wedding vows have changed too; most couples ditch the promise to ‘obey’ their new spouse, and even write their own personalised vows.
Tiered wedding cakes have always been a staple at wedding breakfasts. Nowadays, anything from cupcakes and doughnuts to ice cream are used as alternatives to the main event.
Showering newlyweds in rice after their big day was a tradition for centuries, signalling fertility and good fortune. Instead of the grain, couples now encourage guests to use everything from confetti and rose petals to glitter and sparklers to mark their transition into married life.

Honeymoons date back to the early nineteenth century, but they’ve changed quite a bit over the last few decades. As international travel became easier, many couples began splashing out on exotic locations in the late 60s and early 70s, but the all-inclusive honeymoon package didn’t take off until the 90s.
Now, thanks to the boom of social media, honeymoons are bigger and bolder than ever. Lots of couples plan a ‘mini-moon’ straight after the wedding, and a longer trip later in the year, giving them time to save for their ‘honeymoon of a lifetime’.
We comply with all required regulations relating to Covid 19 infection control
As a nation, we love our gardens and spend a considerable amount of time and money on them. As we rush to get those jobs in the garden done, there is a risk that gardeners may injure themselves. What everyone wants is to be fit and healthy enough to actually enjoy sitting in their garden and enjoy the fruits of their labours come summer time, so here are some helpful tips from Discover Chiropractic!
• Don’t wear clothes that are tight or could constrict your movement.
• Gardening is like any other exercise; you need to warm up first. Don’t go straight into heavy garden work; start off with lighter jobs as this will lessen the chance of muscle strain.
• When using a ladder or steps, make sure you are always facing it, keeping your shoulders, hips and knees pointing in the same direction.
• Rather than leaning or reaching, move the ladder or step regularly to keep up with where you are.
• Any kind of ladder must be firmly and safely planted in position and, if possible, have someone else there to keep an eye on things.
• Vary your activity by spending no more than 20-30 minutes on any one thing and make sure you take regular breaks.
• If laying a patio, keep the slab close to your body and bend your knees; it is sometimes better to bend one knee rather than two, as your supporting leg gives you a position of strength.
• If using railway sleepers, two people will probably be needed.
• Get as close as possible to the things you are pruning and avoid overstretching to reach the area you are dealing with.
• Invest in some long handled secateurs to reach plants and bushes that are beyond normal reach.
• If you are planning a trip to the local DIY store to buy heavy items such as cement or gravel, buy smaller bags rather than one big bag as they are easier and safer to carry.
• If you do buy heavy items, use a trolley and if on your own, ask an assistant at the store to help you.
• If buying things like compost, sand or gravel in bulkier amounts, shovel the contents of the large bags straight into smaller containers or wheelbarrow from the back of the car.
• Don’t lift with your arms straight out, keep the elbows bent and to your side to minimise the stress on your back.
• If having items delivered, have them unloaded as close to where you need them as possible; this will save the effort of moving them again.
• A specialist garden trolley might be worth investing in to move these sorts of materials around, especially if you have lots of patio pots to move around as well.
I am delighted to report back that The Corstorphine Literary and Geographical Society (familiarly known as The Lit) has had a very successful relaunch with a change to monthly meetings on the first Monday of each month in St. Ninian’s Church at 7.45pm .
Between 80 and 90 people turned up for my own talk in March and the following one on Corstorphine Village in 1920 in April. The Corstorphine Singers will perform on Monday 5 th June, which will be the final meeting before the summer break. All welcome. If you would like to help the Lit. who are looking for active members, especially someone to set up the projector, screen and laptop, please give me a ring.
Many people have commented about the latest changes Corstorphine to “enhance” the village. One particular addition which many, including me, have called an eyesore, are the benches placed outside the grade A listed 15th Century Old Parish Church. This photo says it all.
Following my recent talk to the Lit. about my Life After Westminster, every copy of my book, The Mayor of Kalymnos sold out at McLean’s Newsagent in the Corstorphine High Street. (now restocked) As all proceeds from its sale are going to charity.
Following that talk, I was invited to give a similar talk to the Corstorphine Rotary Club, where I will be mentioning that I have now produced cards with a design of Sunflowers and the Ukrainian flag from a painting by a young artist I contacted, who was trapped in the city of Bakhmut, which is currently under siege. The cards are selling like hot-cakes and the entire proceeds are going to support Sunflower Scotland, who are sending help from Edinburgh to those suffering in the Ukraine. If you would like a pack, £10 for 5 cards, please give me a ring on 0780 1057 446

Hello again everyone,
With summer approaching fast, most damaged roofs and leaks go unnoticed and untreated, however summertime is the perfect time to get someone out and inspect the most important part of your home.
You may wonder why this would matter as there is no leak or visible damage, with the majority of our bigger jobs the issue has come from a small problem that unfortunately develops into a bigger one. Leaving your roof with no inspection can cause further damage and most importantly can be incredibly pricey. Here at DM Duncan and Son we offer FREE estimates to make sure this does not happen to your home.
You may be interested to know that we also have a limited time offer on for our roof maintenance package usually costing £320, NOW only costing £150. As this is only a limited time offer, be sure to get in touch as soon as possible if you are interested in the deal.
Lastly the DM Duncan and son team would like to give a big thank you to jill at the Grapevine for giving us the opportunity to reach out to you all again.
Take care, until next time……

Cat in a box
Cats are instinctively attracted to small, enclosed spaces because they provide a sense of safety and security. They can feel protected and observe their surroundings without feeling threatened. The box is also warm, smooth and slightly padded. As far as a cat is concerned, what’s not to like?

Why does your feline friend like to sit in a box or bring you (unwelcome) gifts? There are some explanations!
Cat presents
Few owners are grateful for the gift of a dead mouse or bird posted through the cat flap. But it’s natural instinct for cats to hunt, and presenting their catch to you means you are part of their family and they want to boast of their success. There’s no point getting angry as they won’t understand it.
As a natural hunter, climbing to high places allows a cat to survey their environment and assess potential threats. It is also a natural form of exercise for cats. It helps them maintain their balance, coordination and agility, which are important for hunting and self-defence.
No water thanks
Cats are descendants of desert-dwelling wild cats, and their ancestors did not need to swim or interact with water regularly. As a result, cats did not develop an affinity for water like some other animals, such as dogs. Furthermore, water can make their fur mat, hence making it difficult to groom, which, as a fastidious animal, can be uncomfortable.

Fuss-free and made in moments, Spaghetti alla Caprese (spaghetti from Capri) is a blissfully simple idea, yet looks stunningly sophisticated for a light lunch or quick midweek supper dish.
Serves 4-6 Prep/cook time 30 minutes
Ingredients
• 250g cherry tomatoes on the vine, ripe and flavourful, cut into quarters
• 1 clove garlic, peeled and sliced
• 3 tbsp olive oil
• Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
• 500g spaghetti
• 125g buffalo mozzarella, torn into bite-sized pieces
• A generous handful of fresh basil, torn
• 2 tsp chopped fresh oregano
• Freshly grated Parmesan, to serve
1. Place the tomatoes in a large bowl with the garlic, oil, salt and pepper, and leave to marinate for 30 minutes.
2. Meanwhile, cook the spaghetti in a large pan of boiling, salted water until al dente. This will very much depend on personal preference, so taste as you are cooking and stop when the pasta is cooked to your liking. Drain, reserving a cup of cooking water.
3. Add the mozzarella to the marinating tomatoes. Add the spaghetti to the bowl of tomatoes and mix through, adding a little of the pasta cooking water if needed. Sprinkle with basil and oregano. Serve straight away, sprinkled with Parmesan.
TIP Always remember, use the finest ingredients wherever possible.
If you often find yourself feeling sluggish and lethargic, even after a full night’s sleep, you’re not alone. Fortunately, there are plenty of healthy actions you can take to boost your energy levels that don’t just involve getting more sleep – although that’s a good place to start. If you’re tired of feeling tired, try out these five tips for boosting your energy levels.
Stress uses up a lot of mental energy and has also been linked to other mental and physical health problems.
While in many cases it’s not possible to remove certain stressors from our lives altogether, there are things that can help. Take some time for yourself, lose yourself in a book or go for a walk outside. You could also try mindfulness or meditation techniques, which are often used to reduce feelings of anxiety.
Move more
It might sound counterintuitive, but research has proven that regular exercise can fight feelings of fatigue, increase energy levels and help you sleep better at night. To top it off, physical activity also triggers the release of ‘happy hormones’ dopamine and serotonin, boosting your mood long after you’ve finished your workout.
If you’re not keen on exercise, start small by going for a walk on your lunch break, taking the stairs instead of the lift, or walking to work or school instead of driving.
Stay hydrated
Water can have a huge effect on your body’s brain function, mood, energy levels – and more – so it’s important to keep yourself hydrated throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Particularly as you age, the sensation of thirst decreases.
We are what we eat, so an unhealthy diet will always be a huge contributing factor to feelings of fatigue.
When you feel tired, it’s tempting to fill up on sugary foods for a much-needed energy boost. However, although sweet snacks can combat feelings of tiredness in the short term, the effects wear off quickly and can actually leave you feeling more tired than before.
This is because high-sugar foods cause a sharp spike in blood sugar levels, followed by a crash as the body releases a large amount of insulin to transport sugar from the bloodstream to the cells. If you want to satisfy your sweet tooth without the sugar crash, try snacking on fresh berries and ‘no sugar’ drinks.
Caffeine is another culprit. While it increases alertness in the short term, it can also cause sleep problems when consumed in large amounts. Cut out caffeine completely for a month to see if you feel more energised without it.
Supplement your diet
No matter how nutritious your diet may be, there’s a chance that your body could still be lacking certain nutrients. For example, being deficient in vitamin B12, a vitamin only found in animal products, has been known to cause feelings of fatigue.
If you’re unsure which supplements you need, talk to your doctor to find out if you’re deficient in any key nutrients.
The average garden has changed significantly over the last 50 years. In a physical sense, it has become smaller but, in more general terms, expectations have grown. In a small garden every square metre matters. Today’s contemporary garden might have an outside kitchen and possibly a retractable roof to serve as sunshade or umbrella and a moving water feature provides a soundscape to accompany the outdoor dining experience.
Alongside the shrinking space, our need for privacy has expanded. The addition of pleached trees – often called a ‘hedge on stilts’ – has become commonplace. They allow taller boundaries that blur the fence line, thus bringing seclusion without harsh enclosure.
Look at the plants
Gardens follow fashion and plant selection tells you a huge amount about the history and evolution of a garden. Before the 1980s, a garden border would be filled with perennial planting that might include asters, campanula, delphiniums, hardy geraniums, helianthus, geums, lupins, peonies, pulmonaria, salvias and veronica. These provided spring and summer colour but would die down for winter. Newer or updated borders might incorporate a number of
shrubs to give year-round shape. There could be some structural forms in terms of sculpture or topiary. There might be evergreen giant cones and maybe some roses, rather than an entire bed dedicated to perennials.
The palette of plants available to us has extended dramatically over the decades.
Ornamental grasses and ‘new perennial’ planting, including naturalistic swathes of perennials in subdued colours, are now likely to replace some of the more traditional herbaceous plants. This style of planting has ecology at its heart and the layers of plants tend to be interwoven to form patterns that might be found in the natural world.
A contemporary border will place even more emphasis on forms, shapes and colour that last for longer. Some borders now feature a restricted palette of plant varieties, perhaps chosen for the foliage colour or shape. For example, an entire bed filled with ‘strappy’ shaped leaves in plain green, a shady bed filled with just one variety of fern, or foliage that contrasts such as burgundy and yellow. The gardener will be ruthless when interlopers try to seed themselves amongst such a carefully designed setting.
Making a comeback
Island beds filled with small conifers and perhaps a few rocks were a feature of the 1970s. Over the years we have tended to shun the idea of including these within a planting scheme, perhaps because some of the dwarf conifers grow larger than anticipated. They are beginning to make a comeback, however as we learn to embrace their charm. The RHS Chelsea Flower Show tends to set the trend and over the last few years these old favourite plants have been featured and applauded, along with hydrangeas, rhododendrons, dahlias and chrysanthemums.

It will go down in history as the bombshell book that rocked the British royal family – as well as becoming the fastest-selling non-fiction book ever, selling more than 400,000 copies across hardback, ebook and audio formats on its first day of publication. It’s a no-holds barred memoir in which the Duke of Sussex makes a number of revelations about his own life, as well as his relationship with his father, his brother and other senior members of ‘the firm’. Royalist or not, read it and decide for yourself.
An exhaustive biography of our new monarch by Robert Jobson, dubbed “the godfather of royal reporting”, who has been at the forefront of royal reporting for well over 25 years. He received unprecedented cooperation from Clarence House, what was the Prince’s office, in writing this illuminating biography. Revelations include the truth about his deeply loving but occasionally volatile relationship with Camilla, now Queen Consort. The result is an intriguing new portrait of a man who has at last become king.
A collection of photographs capturing the modern British monarchy as never seen before, taken by the royal photographer for The Sun, who has covered them for nearly half a century and is the man behind the most iconic photographs of the most famous family in the world. With commensurate skill and unprecedented access, he has captured the candid moments when protocol is put aside, revealing the true personalities behind the Crown.
Thrust into the global spotlight on her engagement to Prince William, Kate Middleton chose to wear a sapphire-blue wrap dress by London-based label Issa, which promptly sold out. It was the first step in Kate becoming the modern royal style icon she is today. This is a highly illustrated journey through a decade of her style evolution.
A personal account of the life and character of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch by someone who met her, talked with her and kept a record of those conversations. Gyles Brandreth knew the Queen and her husband well, and knows the new King and Queen Consort. Told with authority, a refreshing dose of humour and moving honesty from a totally unique viewpoint, he writes movingly about the Queen’s deteriorating health. “The truth is that Her Majesty always knew that her remaining time was limited. She accepted this with all the good grace you’d expect.”
The Tower of London has over two million visitors a year, with the Crown Jewels as its centrepiece. This sumptuous and highly readable publication tells the story of the most famous jewellery collection in the world, along with spectacular photographs with stunning details. A gem of a read for anyone interested in British history and monarchy.

From salon treatments to at-home serums, here’s how to get lashes you’ll be proud to flutter.
At home serums
You condition your hair, so why not condition your eyelashes? Growth serums aim to strengthen lashes, promote healthy growth and reduce lash loss. Eyelash serums are particularly beneficial if your eyelashes are brittle or damaged, for example due to regular extensions.
There are lots of eyelash serums on the market. At £37.99, the UKlash Eyelash Serum is on the pricier side, but it’s packed with vitamins and peptides, and fans rave about it. A good budgetfriendly alternative is e.l.f. Enhancing Lash & Brow Serum, which is just £8.
A note of caution: to avoid irritation, always do a patch test first, and don’t overuse the serum.
Lash extensions
The best thing about lash extensions is that they can be tailored to you. Want full, long, natural looking lashes? Coming right up. Have some big nights out planned so craving a more dramatic effect? Again, not a problem. Done well, lash extensions should last around six weeks, but you’ll need them infilled every two to three weeks. Do make sure you take regular breaks from extensions, or you risk damaging your natural lashes.
Lash tint
If you want something a bit more subtle, a lash tint could be perfect, particularly if you have naturally fair eyelashes. You’ll need a patch test before the tint, so book in with your salon in plenty of time. You can buy a kit to tint your eyelashes at home, but it is pretty fiddly to do yourself. Whether you go DIY or professional, a tint should last for around four to six weeks.
Lash lift
A lash lift curls your eyelashes upwards. It’s often combined with a tint to give the best results. It’ll make your eyelashes more visible, but it won’t add length or volume. A lash lift is semi-permanent, so should last for around six weeks. Lash lifts do use chemicals, so choose a qualified practitioner with plenty of experience and good reviews.
The best mascara
There are hundreds (if not thousands) of mascaras to choose from. So how do you pick the best one? One way is searching Boots.com for ‘mascara’ and filtering by four stars and up. Then look for those with more than 500 reviews and close to a fivestar rating. As an example, Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara has an average of 4.5 stars, from more than 1,500 reviews, but is actually one of the cheaper brands at £11.99. Read the description of each of the top mascaras to find one that will deliver the effect you’re looking for. Of course, not all brands are available through Boots, but it’s a good place to start.
