As we continue to move out of Covid restrictions there is an emphasis on mental health and recovery. Please see pages 33 and 44 regarding activities that may be helpful. As you know, John Barrett, your former local Member of Parliament and Councillor, always kindly contributes very interesting articles for the Grapevines. He recently organised a charity concert to fundraise for the Ukraine and I was delighted to be in the position to highlight this event for John who works so hard for the community and this cause is very close to his heart. The Gardening Season! As a nation, we love our gardens and spend a considerable amount of time and money on them. As we rush to get those jobs in the garden done, there is a risk that gardeners may injure themselves. What everyone wants is to be fit and healthy enough to actually enjoy sitting in their garden and enjoy the fruits of their labours come summer time, so here are some helpful tips from Discover Chiropractic! CLOTHES • Don’t wear clothes that are tight or could constrict your movement. WARM UP • Gardening is like any other exercise; you need to warm up first. Don’t go straight into heavy garden work; start off with lighter jobs as this will lessen the chance of muscle strain. USING A LADDER • When using a ladder or steps, make sure you are always facing it, keeping your shoulders, hips and knees pointing in the same direction. • Rather than leaning or reaching, move the ladder or step regularly to keep up with where you are. • Any kind of ladder must be firmly and safely planted in position and, if possible, have someone else there to keep an eye on things. TAKE A BREAK • Vary your activity by spending no more than 20-30 minutes on any one thing and make sure you take regular breaks.

BE CLEVER WITH THE PAVING • If laying a patio, keep the slab close to your body and bend your knees; it is sometimes better to bend one knee rather than two, as your supporting leg gives you a position of strength. • If using railway sleepers, two people will probably be needed.

CLEVER PRUNING • Get as close as possible to the things you are pruning and avoid overstretching to reach the area you are dealing with. • Invest in some long handled secateurs to reach plants and bushes that are beyond normal reach. PLAN AHEAD • If you are planning a trip to the local DIY store to buy heavy items such as cement or gravel, buy smaller bags rather than one big bag as they are easier and safer to carry. • If you do buy heavy items, use a trolley and if on your own, ask an assistant at the store to help you. • If buying things like compost, sand or gravel in bulkier amounts, shovel the contents of the large bags straight into smaller containers or wheelbarrow from the back of the car. • Don’t lift with your arms straight out, keep the elbows bent and to your side to minimise the stress on your back. • If having items delivered, have them unloaded as close to where you need them as possible; this will save the effort of moving them again. • A specialist garden trolley might be worth investing in to move these sorts of materials around, especially if you have lots of patio pots to move around as well.

By John Barrett - former local Member of Parliament and Councillor Many years ago, I offered to do some pro bono work for a Scottish charity. At that time, I made corporate films and videos. The charity asked me to go to Kiev, to make them a fund-raising film, in order to help children over there, who were suffering from cancer, following the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Sadly, many of the children I met died in the years following, as their tumours were detected too late to be saved by the treatment available to them. One family I met out there became good friends, and we have remained in constant contact for over 25 years. Some years after my visit, my wife and I brought the daughters of that family to Edinburgh for a holiday, as they were the same age as our own daughter. Twenty-five years on, those same daughters, both now married, have had to flee Kyiv with their children, driving for three days, in heavy snow on back roads, being constantly stopped by armed guards at checkpoints, sleeping in refugee camps, to escape to safety. While also having to say goodbye to their husbands, who are not allowed to leave, and to their parents, who are in their 60s, but their father is too ill to travel.

When war broke out, we offered them all a place to stay with us; if they could get here, but at that time they did not qualify for a UK visa, as they had no relatives here. Thankfully, it looks like this is slowly changing and they may yet come to Edinburgh; if the parents can get out of Kyiv, if they are well enough to travel and if they can get a visa.

In order to help some of the many families in the Ukraine like them, I recently organised a fundraising concert in Corstorphine on April 30 th. Thanks to the Grapevine magazine, the Corstorphine Rotary Club, P Blackhall Ltd., TaxAssist Accountants and Jacks 1 Civil Engineers, who have all supported the event, I raised several thousand pounds to help some of the families affected by the war and 100% of the amount raised will go directly to help those who need it.

Most of us need to do less. Many people seem to have too much going on. We work more in order to play more and often give in to peer pressure urging us to join in with a greater number of things. This lifestyle suits a wide range of people, but very rarely is it perfect for gardening folk. This glorious season of plenty is the very best time to make space for gardening. It cannot be rushed! Gardening is a healing, nurturing activity where mental health is soothed and the soul is fed with contentment. Joyful tasks for spring • Prioritise the lawn, if you have one, because it will provide a visual feature during the months to come. Cut and reshape the edges, it’s amazing what a difference this makes. Mow carefully and don’t be tempted to take it too low, leaving longer patches for wildlife, where possible. • Early-spring ﬂowering shrubs often beneﬁt from being pruned back to healthy buds, but take time to check the most effective method for each species. In the case of forsythia, for example, best results are achieved by taking out some of the older stems, right down to the ground. This thins the shrub whilst still allowing it to adopt its natural form. What you don’t want is a ‘mechanical massacre’ whereby everything is rounded into a blob. Take a walk around your local modern housing estate to see it! Abelia, choisya, helichrysum and chaenomeles can also be pruned now. • Climbers such as clematis need you to be wise. Some of them can have a light clip at this time of year, but not those that are 42

about to ﬂower! The easy-to-remember advice “if it ﬂowers before June, don’t prune” will tell you what type of pruning group your clematis falls into. • Celebrate the season by planting out your annuals towards the end of the month, when all danger of frost has passed. Hanging baskets and bedding will provide vibrant colour and interest right through until October. • If you are growing strawberries, lay straw between the plants and the soil. It will lessen the chance of mould spoiling the crop and will keep those luscious red fruits clean, too. • Did you know that you can achieve greater yields from your vegetable beds if you plant in triangles rather than rows or squares? Stagger your plants, but don’t plant too closely. The crop is far better when there’s a bit more space in between. • It’s time to make supports for runner beans. Allow about 2.5m of height and plant just one bean per support. These can go in the ground at the end of the month. • Chit and plant potatoes, if you haven’t done so already. They like soft, crumbly soil. Always avoid planting them in boggy sites. • Get weeds under control this month and it will make the rest of the growing season much easier. Given the uncertainty, stress and grief we’ve all experienced in various measures over the last couple of years, it will come as no surprise to hear that mental health issues are on the rise. Two of the most common mental health disorders in the UK are depression and anxiety. While people suffering from depression may experience low moods, fatigue, insomnia and decreased self-esteem, anxiety manifests itself through feelings of panic, nausea and shortness of breath. It’s possible to be diagnosed with both. While self-care practices such as exercise, a good diet and counselling can be effective in treating depression and anxiety, you should always speak to a medical professional if your symptoms don’t improve. Whether or not you’re offered medication will depend on your diagnosis, symptoms and how severely they’re affecting your daily life. These are the key treatments prescribed by doctors in the UK. Antidepressants Antidepressants are by far the most well-known medicine group for treating mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. Although not fully understood, it’s believed that they work by increasing levels of certain chemicals in your brain that help improve your mood. There are several different types of

antidepressants, each with various potential side effects. Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are believed to have the fewest, while older medicines such as tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and mono-amine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) sit on the opposite end of the scale. Antipsychotics Antipsychotic medications are generally used to treat psychotic disorders but can also be prescribed for severe cases of anxiety and depression. These block the effect of dopamine, a chemical that carries messages across your brain that’s been known to cause symptoms often associated with mental illness. There are two types; typical or ‘first-generation’ medications have been used since the 1950s, while atypical or ‘second-generation’ antipsychotics were introduced in the 1990s. Although both can cause changes to your body, first-generation antipsychotics are known to cause more side effects than their successors.

Mood stabilisers Mood stabilisers are a type of medication that can help with mood swings caused by mania, hypomania and depression. They help to control and ‘even out’ these mood swings. There are three main types, lithium, anticonvulsants and antipsychotics, and they’re often used to treat depression as part of bipolar disorder. This is because, although antidepressant medications can be effective, using them on someone with bipolar disorder could turn a depressive episode into mania. This risk is lower if the person is also taking a mood stabiliser. Benzodiazepines Usually prescribed for more severe cases of anxiety, benzodiazepines – or ‘benzos’ – are a type of sedative. They’re typically prescribed on a short-term basis because they can become addictive if taken for longer than a month. Benzodiazepines are also used to treat insomnia and alcohol withdrawal. If you suffer from sleep problems, you’re more likely to be prescribed hypnotics, whereas anxiolytics are used to treat those with anxiety.

There is no shame in asking for help. Putting up with prolonged negative feelings and thinking you just need to pull yourself together, is just ignoring the problem. 44

June’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations mark an extraordinary 70 years since Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne, surpassing the previous record held by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, who reigned for 63 years. Born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary on 21st April 1926 at 17 Bruton Street, London, the girl nicknamed Lilibet wasn’t destined to be Queen. She was the eldest daughter of Prince Albert and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, Duke and Duchess of York. The Duke, a shy man with a pronounced stammer, was the younger brother of Edward who was heir to the throne, and the family of four with their two daughters were anticipating a quiet life without the heavy responsibilities of rule. However, an event that shocked the nation was to propel Elizabeth into the spotlight and take her on a quite different path. Only twelve months after his coronation, Edward VIII’s love for a twice-divorced American woman, Wallace Simpson, led him to abdicate. It may seem strange to us now, but even into the 1960s it was strictly taboo for a sovereign, or member of the Royal family, to marry a divorcee. As second in line to the throne, Edward’s brother Albert had to take his place. Crowned King George VI on 11th December 1936 at 40 years old, Princess Elizabeth, then ten, became heir. From that point, her education and upbringing focused on the fact she would one day be Queen.

In 1947, Elizabeth married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten in Westminster Abbey. They settled in Clarence House and two years later Prince Charles was born. Although still only 55 years old, in the summer of 1951 King George’s health began to fail and the young Princess Elizabeth had to undertake her first official duty when she stepped in to represent her father at the Trooping of the Colour. That autumn, Elizabeth and Philip departed for a tour of Canada and Washington DC, where the young couple was enthusiastically received. In January 1952, they set out for another tour of Australia and New Zealand. However, on 6th February, while en route in Kenya, the King died of a coronary thrombosis at Sandringham. Elizabeth immediately flew back as Queen. She was just 25 years old. After three months of private mourning for her beloved father, Queen Elizabeth moved into Buckingham Palace and began to start the routine duties expected of a monarch. She took her role seriously, conducting her first state opening of Parliament in November 1952. Her coronation was held at Westminster Abbey on 2nd June 1953. Controversially, Prince Philip was instrumental in having the ceremony televised. Both the Queen and her husband subsequently worked to modernise the monarchy while retaining its traditional sense of public duty and creed of “never complain, never explain.” Like all of us, Queen Elizabeth has lived through difficult times, and last year lost her husband and life companion. But despite bouts of ill health herself, she has stoically continued her duties. Now, aged 96 and still head of the Commonwealth, she has lived a life of service to her country and is admired, respected and loved around the globe.

Preparation time 15 minutes Cooking time 40 minutes Serves 4 Ingredients • 8 new potatoes, halved • 4 chicken breasts, skinless and boneless • 2 tsp Italian seasoning • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 tsp crushed garlic • 1 onion, finely chopped • 1 400g can coconut milk • 200g cherry tomatoes, halved • 4 sun-dried tomatoes in oil, drained and roughly chopped • 1 tbsp cornflour • 250g baby spinach leaves • Handful of basil leaves or parsley to serve, optional

1. Preheat the oven to 180C / 160C fan / gas mark 4. 2. Place the new potatoes in a pan of boiling salted water and parboil for 5 minutes, then drain. 3. Rub the chicken breasts with sea salt, black pepper and Italian seasoning. 4. Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a casserole dish. Add the chicken breasts and cook for about 5 minutes until starting to turn lightly golden. Flip over and cook for a further 5 minutes. 5. Remove the chicken and place on a plate. 6. Add the rest of the oil then stir in the garlic and onion and sauté for 2 minutes to soften. 7. Pour in the coconut milk. Add the chicken, cherry tomatoes, sun-dried tomatoes and new potatoes. Stir well. 8. Cover and place in the oven for 20 minutes until the chicken is cooked through.
