As I am writing the restrictions for COVID seem to be being revised weekly which is fantastic news. Slowly we will see life resume although it will always be different now after what we have all been through. I have been very lucky to have been able to continue to publish the Murrayfield Grapevine throughout the pandemic, and would like to thank the many businesses that supported one another. Local events are starting to resume please look through the directory for information. If you have a local business that you would like to promote or are running a local group or club that is restarting please get in touch - all contact information is at the foot of this page.

Did you know that there are children who do not go on family holidays, day trips or visiting relatives because of a variety of reasons? Well, for some children the only similar experience they benefit from annually is a school trip! For that reason I will be raising money for them with my cycling efforts.
Cycling a thousand miles in ten days might read like a bridge too far for some but for others this is considered a great experience. This summer I will be cycling from Land’s End to John o’Groats and raising money in the name of the parent council of St Andrews primary school.
My target is to raise £3,000 to enable the parent council to organise an away day for all children at St Andrews primary school. Please help the children experience a trip away that is considered ‘normal’ for some but almost utopian for others.

New plaque celebrating
Murrayfield artist Charles H. Mackie The life and works of Murrayfield’s own artist Charles H Mackie were celebrated in an exhibition over the summer at the City Art Centre to mark the centenary of his death. His Coltbridge Studio had been located in the old schoolhouse where Murrayburgh House now stands, and to so as to promote continued awareness of him the Murrayfield Community Council commissioned a plaque mounted on a plinth placed on the opposite bank of the Water of Leith.
What our volunteers say A great way of making new friends I like doing something for other people

Spring is the perfect time to enjoy lamb. This is a light flavoursome dish that is delicious served warm or cold. Ideally, marinate the lamb the night before to enhance the flavour. Method 1. For the lamb, mix together the garlic, lemon zest, cumin and olive oil and rub over the lamb. Leave to marinate in the fridge for at least 1 hour or overnight.
We also offer advice on products, landscape design and have an extensive portfolio of work. All work is guaranteed and we are fully insured.
2. For the dressing, place the garlic bulb in a piece of foil and drizzle over a little oil. Bake in the oven for about 30 minutes. Cool slightly then squeeze out the garlic pulp into a blender. Add the remaining ingredients for the dressing and blend together. Season to taste. 3. Preheat the oven to 220C/200C fan/gas mark 7. Sear the lamb in a frying pan with a little olive oil so that it is brown all over. Place in the oven and roast for 15-20 minutes. Allow to rest for 5-10 minutes. Slice thinly. 4. Blanch the beans or broccoli in boiling water until al dente, drain and refresh under cold water. Pile the green leaves on a platter and top with the beans, tomatoes and onion. Arrange the lamb on top and drizzle over the dressing to serve.

STRESS SIGNALS
WAYS TO REDUCE STRESS
Unusual fatigue: Stress weighs on you physically, emotionally and mentally. It wears you down and drains you. Can’t get out of bed in the morning? Stress may be what’s keeping you there.
Work it off: Find the time to exercise. Whether it’s a quick trip to the gym, a peaceful run or a brisk walk with family or friends, exercise puts the focus somewhere else for a while. Biochemically, exercise has a big anti-stress benefit. It helps reduce levels of the stress hormone (cortisol) and increases your “feel-good” hormones, endorphins.
Sleeplessness: You may feel like sleeping for a day or two, but stress tends to keep you up at night. Impulsivity: If you find your eating habits changing suddenly, you may be turning to comfort foods to deal with stress. The same is true with impulse buying, particularly when it involves items you don’t really need. Anger/impatience: Stress can make you short-tempered and easily roused to anger, even if your demeanour is normally calm, quiet and reserved. Lack of concentration/forgetfulness: Stress usually occupies our mental time, so much so that we can have trouble remembering things or make more mistakes. Never forget your keys in the morning? When you’re stressed, you just might. Physical ailments: Back pain, neck pain and pain in general that doesn’t have a clear cause (e.g., an injury) is often related to stress. The same is true for colds and flu; stress can lower your immune system, increasing your risk of developing illness.
Get away from it: This can be challenging, but doing what you can to distract yourself can go a long way toward reducing stress. Schedule a holiday, visit old friends, take a long walk; whatever it takes to remove yourself from your stress environment. Smile about it: It’s much harder for stress to exist in a fun, laughter-filled environment, so put yourself in a position to smile when you’re under stress. After all, laughter truly is the best natural medicine. Talk about it: When you’re stressed, your mind can be a continual stream of negative, overwhelming, stressed-out thoughts. Don’t keep it all to yourself; sometimes the best way to reduce your stress is to vent about it and get a neutral perspective, rather than staying in a bottled-up, stressed-out state. Pay attention when people talk about the sudden onset of bizarre and unusual ailments. This is especially true at this time of year. The answer can be found in a little word with big implications: stress. Our bodies endure stress, which can be simply defined as anything that causes a reaction. There are three main areas in which we experience stress: physical, emotional and chemical. Stress involving any of these areas can affect us profoundly. Here are some of the common signs of stress, along with ways to reduce your stress burden.

What can we do about those bills which keep on rising? By John Barrett - former local Member of Parliament and Councillor
Hardly a day passes without news of another rising bill, or another increasing charge heading our way in the near future. Is there anything we can do about it? As I write this, British Telecom have announced today that its customers’ bills for broadband and phone bills will jump by 9.3% from the end of March. Gas and electricity bills are set to jump for most customers and the increased need for heating during the recent cold winter period will bring a shock to many when the next bill arrives if people have not already had notice of a sharp rise in their monthly payments. Food bills increase with every weekly shop. Overall prices have gone up their fastest in 30 years and some experts have warned that there is worse to come. Most people have already taken measures to reduce their bills, but it looks like this year everyone will still be looking for more ways to reduce costs. As a BT customer I recently moved on to a tariff which allows unlimited calls to landline for a small monthly fee, as I was shocked to discover that to phone my local medical centre had cost me nearly £5 for one call, after I had been kept on hold for 30 minutes. This change has already saved more than the next price rise will cost. At home, it is important to stay warm, but we stopped heating the rooms we are not in and this reduced our gas consumption last year, so that when the unit cost increases it will reduce the impact of the rising charges. A big cost for every family is their food bill, yet it is a surprise to many to discover that the average family throws away about £10 worth of food every week. Reducing waste; potatoes, bread, fresh fruit and more can help save money and the environment, as we throw away more than six million tons of food every year. If you have any tips about reducing bills, please share them with your friends and family, or post them on local community web sites, so everyone can benefit from them. 40

ell, here I am on the train, pulling out of Edinburgh to reach London in just over 4 hours’ time for the start of a new life. Nice of my friends to give me a “Good luck” send-off at the station, but now it is a relief to be on my own in the First Class carriage, to reread my instructions, but first collect my thoughts.
I’ll start by looking back to a moment four months ago. My pals and I were relaxing in the Corstorphine Bowling Club lounge, putting the world to rights over a bottle of wine. We were talking about the new housing development at Cammo. I had seen the plans on the Council web page, and was going on about how boring it would look. “What’s needed” I said, “Is a central feature – a focal point for the community, an open square with -say – a huge fountain in the middle. What do you all think?” How they laughed, but I insisted, and eventually they all agreed that I had a point. I thought nothing more of it, until Arthur said that he had seen my name in the Features page of the Evening News. That mischievous pal George had written “Local man proposes fountain at Cammo development” and then it went viral….. I was interviewed by the press and appeared on Reporting Scotland; Edinburgh people were keen to make a campaign out of it: “local man takes on the developers/the council/the establishment…” I had reached those local people just when they needed a hero; the wee man opposing the powers that be. That proposed fountain, born in an off-the-cuff remark, became famous. Artists and architects sent me designs, town planners discussed and argued for this one or that one….. the idea of a fountain had caught the public imagination. It was, of course, only a local issue, but then came the announcement that there would be a general election. My bowling club pals suggested - in jest, I assumed – that I stand as an independent, the Fountain candidate. Only joking, I thought, but they clubbed together to put down a deposit and there I was…. Independent Candidate for the seat of Edinburgh Northwest. Me? An MP? Well, I thought, it’s their money and a bit of a laugh, so I’ll go along with it. I became known as the Fountain man, standing on a single-issue platform. I gave interviews, and, when asked about my manifesto, my views on Brexit, climate change, Scottish independence, the NHS or taxation I offered a solid stone wall. With as much gravitas as I could muster I stated that I would consider all of these questions

once a suitable fountain for Cammo has been approved. How the public loved someone unfazed by the bullying interviewers! What neither I nor my friends had realised was that the voting public had also become heartily fed up with the traditional political scene. Mud-slinging, claim and counter-claim, corruption, smearing, self-interest….the electorate had had enough. An independent candidate with no party loyalties, with no political or personal baggage which could be picked over and criticised….. a political unknown standing for a fountain in the Edinburgh Northwest constituency against the big boys…… I was a welcome breath of fresh air to the folk of Northwest Edinburgh. I held no rallies, distributed no leaflets, spurned the many invitations to debate in public, yet I was elected with a thumping majority. Sensation! As soon as the hung Parliament result was known I had phone call after phone call from the Great and the Good offering support for the Cammo Fountain…. If they could count on my support in the House. How the media loved me!

Yes, it has been a difficult four months, but here I am….. heading south to a Premier Inn near Euston for a week, then I will rent a flat near Westminster, and act to the best of my ability as the Member of Parliament for Edinburgh Northwest. My wife will join me house-hunting in London. This week she is hat-hunting for the State Opening of Parliament in ten days’ time. Just when we were settling into retirement we will have long hours, responsibility, two homes, a high profile and less time for the grandchildren. There is a strong chance that the Council will ask me to choose a fountain for the new suburb, and I’ve heard a rumour that they want to call the square David’s Square, but I won’t have that. If and when a fountain is built I’d like it to be known as the People’s Fountain in People Power Square. One year at Westminster will be enough for me; I will resign my seat in Parliament and reclaim my seat in the bowling club lounge.
Wish me luck!

Pets come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and variations of appeal, so there is no reason why spiders shouldn’t feature amongst the choices. Most pet shops with an exotic section sell spider tanks, together with heating equipment for those that originate from warmer climates. The tanks allow observation of web-building, hunting, burrowing and many other activities.
More than half the calories we eat in the UK now come from ultra-processed foods, but how are these foods affecting our health and what can we do to cut back? Generally, most of the food we eat has been processed in one way or another. Milk is pasteurised to make it safe to drink, beans are dried to extend their shelf life and seeds are pressed to produce oils. However, this doesn’t necessarily make these foods unhealthy. Ultraprocessed foods, on the other hand, contain ingredients you wouldn’t typically find in your kitchen cupboard. Some of the foods that fall into this category are unsurprising. Crisps, fizzy drinks, biscuits and ice cream are all highly processed, but did you know that breakfast cereals and ready meals are too? Created to be convenient, cheap and tasty, ultraprocessed foods are typically high in sugars, refined grains, fats and salt. They have very little nutritional value, are highly addictive and have also been linked to heart disease, diabetes, obesity and even some cancers. So, how can we cut back? Check your labels One of the easiest ways to check whether a food product is highly processed is to read the ingredients list. A label full of long words you can’t pronounce is one sign that a food is highly processed. You can also check the Nutrition Information Panel to identify foods with high amounts of saturated fat, sugar and sodium (salt). Find substitutes There are plenty of substitutes to ultraprocessed foods on the market. Instead of crisps 50
try low-fat popcorn, which is wholegrain and a good source of fibre. Swap sugary cereals for unsweetened oatmeal, and replace white bread with a homemade or granary loaf. Cook more meals from scratch When you prepare a meal from scratch, you have more control over the ingredients you’re consuming. Start compiling a list of quick and easy meal ideas to prepare when you’re feeling lazy. Salads, omelettes and stir-fries require little effort, and are super tasty too. Be wary of false advertising Don’t be fooled by phrases like ‘fat-free’, ‘natural’, ‘no added sugar’ and ‘sugar-free’. Foods that are advertised as healthy often contain artificial ingredients or other chemical additives, such as artificial sweetener, which make them significantly more processed – and unhealthy – than they might first appear. Keep healthy snacks on hand If you’re in a rush, grabbing a packet of crisps and a cereal bar on your way out the door is tempting. However, keeping your kitchen stocked with portable, nutritious snacks can make it much easier to make healthy choices on the go. Fresh fruit, unsalted nuts and hard boiled eggs are simple, tasty snacks that’ll keep you energised throughout the day. Take it slow If ultra-processed foods constitute a large portion of your diet, reduce your intake slowly to begin with. Going cold turkey increases your likelihood of craving the high-fat, high-sugar foods your body has become accustomed to, so start by trying to enjoy one unprocessed or minimally processed meal a day, and gradually increase as you see fit.
Spiders are arachnids, from a family that also includes scorpion and ticks, and there are more than 45,000 different species worldwide. Tarantulas are one of the best-known, and although they can deliver bites that result in pain and swelling, rather like a bee or wasp sting, these spiders are very popular. It is always important to handle them with great care, not only to avoid the risk of a bite, but also because they are delicate creatures that can easily be stressed and injured.
Some of the most poisonous spiders include the Brazilian wandering spider, also known as the banana spider. The Australian redback spider and the funnel-web are highly toxic, as are the various widow spiders, including black, brown and red widow. The advice for those wanting to keep a spider as a pet is to avoid highly venomous species! You might need to obtain a Dangerous Wild Animal Licence and you should always check the Dangerous Wild Animals Act for updates before going ahead with your purchase. By Caroline Knight

Quality joinery for the home Many people love to despise conifers, perhaps because they dismiss their huge variety with just one word – leylandii. The Leyland cypress, Cupressocyparis leylandii, seems to fire up hatred due to its size. The trees can grow up to 90cm per year and could reach 61 metres high. People have a habit of planting them inappropriately, then failing to keep them under control. Whilst legal disputes involving neighbours and leylandii run into thousands, others celebrate the beauty and grandeur of a rather spectacular tree that can take pride of place in a suitable setting. It grows into an impressive specimen and also plays host to many birds and other wildlife. Indeed, the National Pinetum in Bedgebury, Kent, is proud of what is believed to be the tallest and oldest leylandii hedge in Britain, measuring over 40 metres. Conifers possess charms that should never be overlooked. These cone-bearing trees are hugely diverse and they hold impressive carboncapturing statistics. The largest tree in the world, measured by volume, is a giant sequoia, Sequoiadendron giganteum, in California, measuring 83m tall with a diameter of 11m at the base. It is considered to be middle-aged, being around 2,000 years old. The magnificent cedar of Lebanon, Cedrus libani, can easily grow to 35m high and almost as wide. This is the oldest cedar of all and there are some situated on the slopes of Mount Lebanon that are said to be 2,500 years old. At the other end of the scale, many miniature conifers will not reach even 100cm tall at

maturity. Pinus mugo is the dwarf mountain pine and it sits comfortably within a mixed border or can be grown in a large pot. There are hundreds of different shapes, colours, contrasting textures and forms of conifers that can provide colour and interest throughout the year. The pencil-slim Italian cypress is widely used in Mediterranean-style gardens here in the UK, creating vertical impact and drama all year round. In contrast, prostrate spreading junipers such as Juniperus horizontalis provide excellent ground cover and colour-changing foliage from summer through to winter.

Juniperus is known for its dark berry-like cones, which can be used in food dishes such as casseroles and stuffing. They are also the main flavouring for gin. However, the red, fleshy berries produced by Taxus baccata, the English yew, are highly toxic.

Some conifers, such as yew, respond extremely well to clipping, whilst others, including leylandii, go brown and won’t re-grow if you cut back into old wood.

Not all conifers are evergreen. The beautiful, native larch tree loses its soft, needle-shaped leaves in winter. Others change colour throughout the seasons, including Cryptomeria japonica, which is blue-green in spring, turns green during summer and rusty-red in winter. This conifer has soft, tactile foliage, whereas the monkey puzzle tree, Araucaria araucana, has sharp foliage that can cut like a razor blade.

Bored of your usual perfume? Signature scents are all very well, but sometimes it’s good to try something new… Sampling a perfume If you don’t know where to start, sniff a few bottles to see which ones you want to sample.
Hidden phrase: I can fish from a stick and a string. Giancarlo Esposito CROSSWORD PAGE 26
Ideally, spray the perfume on the inside of your wrist, rather than on a strip of cardboard. Over the next few hours, keep sniffing your wrist to see how the fragrance is developing. Perfume is made up of top, middle and base notes. They’re designed to complement each other, but the fragrance will gradually change as the lighter top notes evaporate, so you want to make sure you like the perfume throughout its journey. As well as deciding whether you like the scent, consider how it makes you feel. Some fragrances are uplifting, while other are more calming. Fragrance types Perfumes are broadly categorised into different families, the most popular of which are floral, oriental, woody and fresh (also called green). Floral scents tend to be slightly sweet and let flowers such as rose, jasmine and lily take the starring role. Oriental fragrances are spicier, with warm, sensual notes. Woody fragrances are warm and musky, with notes such as sandalwood, bark and leather, while fresh fragrances contain
citrus or grassy notes to create a clean, light and invigorating perfume. You’ll also find combinations – such as floral oriental. Perfume or eau de toilette? The higher the concentration of fragrance, the longer it will last. Perfumes/parfums have the highest concentration, so one spritz should last pretty much all day. However, not all fragrances are made into an actual parfum as it’s just so expensive. Eau de parfum isn’t quite as concentrated, but it should still last a good few hours. Eau de toilette is lighter and will need reapplying every few hours. Eau de cologne will need reapplying frequently. So, if you’re looking for a day perfume, go for the highest concentration that you can afford. (Do apply it sparingly if you work in a crowded environment or take public transport, however, as perfume can give some people headaches.) If you just want a fragrance to wear for an occasional evening out, you can get away with a lower concentration.
A few to try… While gardenia takes the leading role in Gucci’s Flora Gorgeous Gardenia, the jasmine, pear blossom and brown sugar add depth and intrigue (£105 for 100ml Eau de Parfum from Boots). Nuxe’s Prodigieux® le Parfum is summer in a bottle. Orange blossom and magnolia adds sweetness, but they’re warmed and tempered by vanilla (£45 for 50ml, uk.nuxe.com). Love Jo Malone but can’t justify the price tag? Check out the legendary perfumier’s collaboration with Zara. She’s been working with the retailer for a couple of years now and you can try eight of her perfumes at home with the £15.99 sample Discover Set.
