EXERCISES (to Do & Not to Do)

NUTRITION ESSENTIALS

Some common exercises help promote spinal health in the form of proper posture while others promote poor posture and put the spine at risk. A strong core supports the spine, whereas a weak core can lead to pain and injury. To build the core, think bent-leg knee raises, stability ball exercises and other exercises that strengthen the core muscles (remembering to keep your spine protected at all times by avoiding rounding the back / neck). On the other hand, avoid exercises / movements that unduly stress the spine: slumping while sitting and bending forward immediately after sitting come to mind, as do exercises that make you prone to rounding your back (traditional sit-ups, toe-touches, etc.). Please seek exercise advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

Believe it or not, certain foods promote a healthy spine (and vice versa). For example, adequate water intake is necessary to nourish not only the body’s cells, but also the spinal intervertebral discs. As you might imagine, water helps keep the discs (and thus the spine) from getting stiff and becoming subject to injury. In addition, an antiinflammatory diet is key to preventing back pain and other spine problems due to inflammation. Think foods such as omega-3 fish and lean proteins, fresh produce, avocado and olive oil while reducing intake of pro-inflammatory foods (most fast foods and processed foods, sugar-laden sweets, etc.).

SLEEP MATTERS Your sleep position and the overall quality of your sleep play a big role in spinal health. The ideal position for the spine during sleep places you on your back with a pillow underneath the knees. As you might imagine, lying on your stomach is the worst position. Your pillow and mattress also matter, so make sure you choose the right ones for you, or your spine will let you know with neck and/or back pain. (Talk to your healthcare professional for suggestions.)

CHIROPRACTIC CARE No conversation about spinal health would be complete without mentioning chiropractic, an entire health care profession founded on the principle that a healthy, properly aligned spine may have far-reaching effects on the entire body. Research asserts chiropractic’s effectiveness in treating back pain, neck pain and various other musculoskeletal conditions, and the goal of chiropractic care is to improve spinal health and help prevent pain from returning. Signposting Website and Directory of Community Services in Drumbrae, Gyle, Corstorphine & Murrayfield The Directory which was set up in 2023 gives information on local Voluntary Organisations and activities in the local area and is now available online as part of the new West Edinburgh Information Website.

The site includes a range of pages including information on individual organisations, catalogues sports and recreation, activities by age group, a weekly diary of clubs and activities offered, Special Events, What’s on and volunteering opportunities.

Friends of St. Margaret’s Park

any years ago, when, as the local councillor, I used to produce regular Newsletters to every house in the area, I included a reply form asking for anyone who would like to start a Friends of St. Margaret’s Park group, to help improve the facilities in the park, to contact me. At that time there was little interest and no group was formed. Since then, a number of local successful Friends groups have grown, such as Friends of Corstorphine Hill www. corstorphinehill.org.uk which has details of its work on an interesting website, and Friends of Roseburn Park which have been very successful at improving the facilities in the park. Much more can be seen on their website which is packed with information www.friendsofroseburnpark.org.uk More recently, a group of park users tried to

get a Friends of St. Margaret’s Park group started, but it failed, as nobody wanted to be the treasurer, and without a treasurer they could not access the funding that was available. Some improvements have recently been made in the park, such as the new surfaces and fences at the tennis courts, but other problems persist, such as dangerous trip hazards on foot-paths. There is also concern about the proposed changes within the park.

A group of park users and local residents working together could ensure that changes and improvements were in the best interest of everyone. Thanks to everyone who either bought a copy of my book The Mayor of Kalymnos, (from McLean’s Newsagent in Corstorphine High Street – still a few left) as the total sale price goes to a Ukrainian charity, or who bought a pack of the cards I produced from a painting by a young Ukrainian artist (available at £10 per pack) or supported any other initiative to help families affected by the war in Ukraine. Thousands of pounds were raised from people in Corstorphine, and although two years on, sadly their struggle continues, it is good to know that people here have taken the time to help others in desperate need.

This vibrant and succulent chicken dish is seasoned to perfection with garlic sea salt and the delicate spiciness of fresh tarragon. Ingredients • 2 tbsp olive oil • 4 x chicken legs, skin on • 6 cloves garlic, peeled and left whole • 2 tbsp unsalted butter • 2 tbsp plain ﬂour • 500ml chicken stock • 1 tsp wholegrain mustard • Juice and zest of half a lemon • 200ml double cream • A good pinch of Maldon Garlic Sea Salt • Cracked black pepper • A handful of fresh tarragon, leaves picked and roughly chopped To serve • Creamy mashed potato and green beans For more recipe inspiration using the Maldon range of Sea Salts, visit maldonsalt.com.

1. Heat the oil in a large, shallow cast-iron pan and add the chicken legs, skin-side down. Cook on medium heat until the skin turns golden brown and crispy. When the skin is crispy, turn the legs over and cook on the ﬂesh side until it has browned.

2. When the chicken legs are browned all over, remove them from the pan and set aside. Turn the heat down, add the garlic cloves and cook until soft and caramelised. Remove from the pan and set aside with the chicken. 3. Add the butter to the pan and melt gently. When the butter is foaming, add the ﬂour and mix it in quickly with a wooden spoon. Cook the ﬂour for a couple of minutes until it is golden and smelling biscuity. Then add the stock, a ladleful at a time, whisking in each addition to make sure there are no lumps. Allow the sauce to thicken each time before adding the next ladleful. 4. Once all the stock has been added allow the sauce to bubble and thicken. Then add the mustard, lemon juice, lemon zest and double cream. Stir and add the Maldon Garlic Sea Salt and some cracked black pepper. 5. Place the chicken legs back into the sauce along with the garlic cloves, place the lid on the pan and gently simmer this at a very low temperature for approximately 10 minutes, or until the chicken legs are cooked through. The sauce should be glossy and creamy, but if it needs loosening add a splash of water or stock. 6. Finally sprinkle over the tarragon and then serve with creamy mashed potato and greens.

Laminate floorboards are usually made from a resin-impregnated decorative paper surface layer bonded to a thin MDF or chipboard core. Cheap versions are not especially durable, but more expensive brands are tough and come with long guarantees. Solid wood is exactly that, all the way through the board, so it can be sanded repeatedly. Engineered wood is made from layers of solid timber or a veneer of solid timber on top of MDF, plywood, chipboard or softwood, with a balancing veneer beneath. A top layer of at least 5mm allows for limited sanding. Engineered boards shouldn’t warp, gap, cup or bow, unlike solid ones and high quality engineered wood is best for bathrooms or other wet areas.

Reclaimed boards have a beautiful patina and are the environmentally friendly option. They don’t come cheap as they often require work to remedy problems such as woodworm, stains, damage and old nails. Most timber floors sold in the UK are of European oak, which has a lovely grain and is long-lasting. Other choices include beech, maple, ash, walnut and pine. Options for finishes include stains, waxes, oils, varnishes and limewashes. Consider the form and laying pattern of the boards. Solid and engineered wood flooring is available as boards, strips, smallish blocks and parquet. Boards can be laid parallel or in chevron and herringbone styles, while parquet has had a renaissance recently. A new wooden floor will naturally become darker or lighter over time.

While we’re all aware of the importance of breathing for sustaining life, the health and well-being benefits of breath control are often overlooked. From managing anxiety to improving sleep, the long-term results can be profound. The act of breathing brings oxygen into your body, so the way we breathe directly affects how much oxygen our cells receive. For example, when we deepen our breath from its usual shallow pattern, we allow more oxygen to enter each cell. When we experience stress, however, our breath tends to become fast and shallow, which limits the oxygen entering our bloodstream. This triggers our body’s sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the ‘fight or flight’ response, and other symptoms including a racing heart, high blood pressure, anxiety and even panic attacks. The benefits of breath control People have been reaping the benefits of breathwork for thousands of years, thanks to its roots in yoga and meditation practice. In a nutshell, engaging in deep breathing counters the sympathetic nervous system, relieving feelings of stress and bringing balance back to your body. Some of the more specific physical and emotional health benefits of breathwork can include:

This is because our nasal passages are designed to filter, humidify and warm the air we breathe before it reaches the lungs. Here are a handful of different techniques to try:

This technique uses a long, deep breath. Sit or lie down comfortably, placing one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen. Inhale deeply through your nose, allowing your diaphragm to expand and your abdomen to rise, before exhaling slowly through pursed lips. 4-7-8 breathing This technique uses counting to quieten and focus your mind. Breathe in for four beats, hold your breath for seven beats, and then exhale for eight beats to completely empty your lungs. Alternate nostril breathing This technique involves breathing with one nostril while holding the other closed. Sit comfortably with your spine straight and use your thumb to apply pressure to your right nostril. Breathe in using only your left nostril and hold your breath as you switch sides. Swap your thumb over to start applying pressure to the left nostril as you exhale through the right nostril. Pause, take another deep breath in, and then alternate again. Box, or square, breathing This technique involves four steps, each lasting four seconds. Inhale, hold your breath, exhale, then hold your breath again and repeat. It’s important to remember that while breathwork has numerous benefits, both physical and therapeutic, it won’t eliminate anxiety or health conditions completely. However, many people find that it’s a low-risk, low-cost way to aid relaxation, cope with stress and improve sleep.

A PERMANENT HOME FOR CCC AT THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY The Management Committee of CCC (Corstorphine Community Centre) is delighted to announce that The Hub (formerly Westfield House) at 5 Kirk Loan is now in community ownership. Negotiations with the City of Edinburgh Council to purchase the building and grounds have been successfully completed, and the building purchase the building and grounds have been successfully completed, and the building became the property of CCC on 20 February 2024. This is a huge step along the way in what has been a long journey to secure a new home for a community centre in Corstorphine, following the fire in 2013 which devastated the Public Hall. We are very grateful to everyone who has helped in any way to bring us successfully to this point.

We now have a permanent home in which to deliver a growing programme of activities and to provide letting space for groups and organisations and for events. We will also progress our refurbishment plans to ensure the building is fully accessible, environmentally efficient and fit for the 21 st century, with a business model that makes it sustainable for the future.

This is a month of positivity for just about everyone, not just gardening folk. There might be winds that feel gusty enough to blow off your gardening boots or perhaps there will be sunshine to ﬁx the widest of smiles ﬁrmly in place for a month of scurrying and secateurs. Whatever the weather, get outside and enjoy the arrival of spring. The kitchen garden If you’re lucky enough to have a greenhouse, you can sow seeds such as tomatoes, aubergines, cucumbers, gherkins, sweet peppers and celeriac. Some will need the encouragement of a propagator. Sowing seeds early means that some won’t make it, particularly if there is a cold snap. But it’s worth keeping an eye on weather forecasts and giving them extra protection when required. Your crops will be bountiful this season if you can get a head start. The soil in the allotment garden can be prepared by removing weeds and covering it with some sort of matting, which will not only stop more weeds from growing but will also warm the soil.

Lawns and borders March is a great month for the ﬁrst cut of the lawn, provided the ground is not too wet and the weather is dry and frostfree. Set the mower blades high and give it a gentle trim to even out the length. A lawn always beneﬁts from aeration and this can be as simple as pushing a garden fork down into the turf for as deep as you can manage, across the surface. A hollow tine aerator is a more sophisticated piece of equipment as each tine removes plugs of soil as it is used.

From mid-March onwards, vegetables such as summer cabbage, Brussels sprouts, leeks, onions, carrots, broad beans, spring onion and beetroot can be sown outdoors under a cloche. Perennial herbs including rosemary, oregano, sage and thyme can also be sown under cover. You might already have chitted (or sprouted) early seed potatoes as this can commence from late January onwards, depending on where you live. Potatoes need up to six weeks of chitting before planting when soil temperatures are around eight degrees, so some might be ready to go into the ground during March. Potatoes probably won’t do well if they are planted in cold or waterlogged soil, so it’s best to wait until temperatures rise. Don’t forget that you can plant them into bags rather than the ground if space is at a premium. This also allows you to move the bags into a warmer and drier space during inclement weather. 54

Consider adding your homemade compost to borders to act as a mulch. Remove weeds ﬁrst, but take care not to trample the soil as this will squeeze away valuable air. Laying a board on the surface helps to distribute your weight evenly. This month is all about preparing the soil to create the best conditions for root health for trees, shrubs, perennials and edible plants. Spring is in the air and our hearts can start to sing.
