Corstorphine News and some local places well worth a visit. by John Barrett former local Member of Parliament and Councillor It was great to see the sunshine and thousands of people enjoying themselves in St. Margaret’s Park at the Corstorphine Fair on June 4th, back after an enforced covid break. It not only provided a great day out for all the family, it also raised thousands of pounds for local groups and organisations. Well done to all involved.

At long last there is also news about a new home for the Corstorphine Community Centre, in Westfield House, the old Social Work office in Kirk Loan by Community Asset Transfer, which is progressing and allows a community organisation to take over publicly-owned land or buildings in a way that recognises the public benefits it will bring.

A few new businesses have also opened recently in Corstorphine, providing a welcome addition to those already serving the community. It is essential that people use them and support them, when possible. Just as they have been supporting the Dower House Café, which I mentioned in a previous Corstorphine Grapevine. One other place for excellent food and service at a reasonable price can also be found at the Torfin Pub.

One welcome addition on the main road is Bennitos Deli, where my grand-daughter and I enjoyed some tasty ice cream recently. Further along to the west, Almond River Records have opened, and it is well worth a visit, especially for people like me, who still have a collection of vinyl records and a turntable. They are near to Prana, the Indian restaurant, which also does an excellent evening meal and first-class afternoon tea. One other place for a great afternoon tea in Corstorphine is Bon, just along from Guitar Guitar, and a big thanks goes to Lynn the owner, for collecting in support of the Corstorphine Concert for Ukraine, which helped the total raised top £5,000. If you would like to help in any way, or donate to help boost the total raised, please contact me by email on barrett.john@btconnect.com or phone me on 0780 1057 446. 36

Naturalistic style at the Chelsea Flower Show
MAKE YOUR BATHROOM SAFE AND COMFORTABLE WITH BMAS If your bathroom is no longer suitable for your needs, BMAS Edinburgh can help. We are a local business that design and install mobility bathrooms for independent and worry-free bathing and showering in your own home. Purple fountain grass
What is this style that we loosely call naturalistic planting? If a vision of opposites helps to define the image, a formal garden will come close. Think of the antithesis, and you’re nearly there. A naturalistic garden could be described as wild, but if it’s been designed this way, it’s anything but. Certainly, plants drive the design. You might not associate it with a closely mown lawn or perfectly straight paths. Although, anything goes – and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t combine a naturalistic border with a neat and tidy lawn, or position it close to an undeviating hard surface. A planting scheme that is full to overflowing with perennials, together with grasses and some structural plants too, appears to work in partnership with nature. It’s a form of re-wilding the borders whilst still maintaining some sort of control over the appearance. This idea of wildness is by no means new. Indeed, William Robinson, born in Ireland in 1838, wrote The Wild Garden in 1870. He was one of the most respected garden writers and horticulturists of his time. The most successful of all plants – grass Grasses certainly have the ability to soften the landscape, forming bold statements of shape and form when used in drifts, clumps and swathes. Their flower and seed heads move in the breeze and merge effortlessly into nature. The naturalistic approach to gardening considers ecology as an important part of the process, therefore habitat potential of a planting scheme is a priority. Wildlife can abound in the damp 40

understorey where there is opportunity for nest building and feasting on seed. Grass, so it seems, is no longer just to walk on, its use has progressed. It is an undeniably successful plant that covers ground in just about every country. Just leave a patch of bare soil and sooner or later grass will appear. There are more than 10,000 different species plus perhaps 5,000 sedges and rushes, so it’s easy to see why we can access so many variations in colour, shape, form and texture. Use grass for structural planting, to divide up your space in an informal way, to create moody areas, fill in bare spaces under trees, create wonderful texture and more. The uses for ornamental grasses are limitless. Gardens to visit Consider the High Line in New York, for which talented designer Piet Oudolf was partly responsible. This influential Dutchman and Henk Gerritson, a former artist from the Netherlands, are known for their ‘new wave planting’ style of ornamental grasses and perennials. Pensthorpe Natural Park Millennium Gardens in Norfolk is another fine example of Oudolf’s stunning work. The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, created for the London Olympic Games in 2012, is a variation on a similar theme. The planting was designed by Nigel Dunnett and Professor James Hitchmough. They are pioneers of ecological and innovative approaches to planting within public spaces, aiming to integrate ecology and horticulture in a most effective and attractive manner. After months of planning and preparation,
the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Big Lunch Street party was finally here .
The day began with closing half our street at Corstorphine Park Gardens at 10 am on Sunday 5th of June for 7 hours. Neighbours and friends began to set up the street for the party. There were 24 tables covered in union jack, red, white and blue table clothes down the middle of the street. The tables were kindly donated by The Corstorphine Committee Trust, The Corstorphine Community Church and The Corstorphine Community Centre. A huge thank you to them all. Each table had a beautiful jar of flowers, some wine, soft drinks, beer and cups on them. Balloons filled with helium floated up from tables, fences and gates. The street was decorated with over 200 meters of home made bunting made from donated materials and a very busy glue gun. The start of lunch was announced by pipers playing who live on our street.. They sounded fantastic. There were 3 large tables of savoury buffet food and 2 tables of desserts, all catered by the neighbours. Even the Queen’s Platinum Pudding, the lemon trifle made it to the table, but didn’t last long.

Why a stretch goes a long way As we age, our muscles tighten and range of motion in our joints decreases. This can impact even the most active lifestyle and hinder your normal day-to-day activities. Tasks that used to be simple, like zipping up a dress or reaching for a can off the top shelf, may become extremely difficult. A regular stretching program can help lengthen your muscles and make daily activities routine again. The word flexible comes from the Latin word flexus, which means “to bend.” Flexibility is the degree to which an individual muscle will lengthen. Stretching increases flexibility, which will help you perform daily activities and reduce the risk of muscle, joint and tendon injuries. Stretching also improves circulation, increasing blood flow to the muscles. Increased blood flow provides more nourishment to the muscles and gets rid of more waste by-products in the muscle tissue itself. Improved circulation can also help speed up recovery time if you suffer a muscle injury. What’s more, stretching can help eliminate or decrease low back pain, one of the most common kinds of structural pain, affecting a large percentage of the population. Muscle tightness in the quadriceps, hamstrings, hip flexors, and low back muscles is a common cause of low back pain. Stretching these muscles will often eliminate the pain. Keep in mind that every joint is tied to another joint, so if one muscle is tight, it is going to affect another joint or muscle. One of the greatest benefits of stretching is that you’re able to increase your range of motion, which means your joints can move further before an injury occurs. Stretching after you exercise (at least after you’ve warmed up a bit) has proven to be much more effective than
pre-workout stretches, because by the time you’ve completed your workout, the muscles are “warm.” Post-exercise stretching also helps reduce soreness, improves workout recovery, and ensures muscle and tendons are working properly. There are no disadvantages to stretching - unless, of course, you do them improperly, which is actually easy to do if you don’t know what you’re doing. Here are a few tips to keep in mind before starting any stretching program:
DON’T bounce when stretching; hold your position for the specified time. DON’T stretch cold muscles; always do some type of warm-up for at least five minutes: jogging in place, walking on a treadmill, light jump rope, etc. DON’T overstretch. There should be a little discomfort, especially if you’re not used to stretching, but it should not be painful. DON’T stretch a muscle improperly. If you are not sure of the proper stretch or how to perform it, get some assistance from a professional. Ross McDonald & Rebecca Vickery Registered Chiropractors

For all your tree care needs
Our feet are our first point of contact with the world, and yet too often we cram them into ill-fitting shoes and leave them until last when it comes to self-care. From athlete’s foot to ingrown toenails, there are a variety of issues that can crop up as a result of poor foot care. So, what can you do to – literally – put your best foot forward, and how can you resolve any issues should they arise?
Once you’re wearing the right shoes, keeping your feet in good condition should be fairly straightforward. Applying a moisturiser or foot cream daily will help prevent cracking, and using a pumice stone or foot file will tackle any hard skin that often appears around the heels. It’s also important to check your feet regularly for cuts, sores, redness or swelling – especially if you’re diabetic. This is because raised blood sugar levels can often lead to a reduction in blood supply to your feet, which means that cuts and sores may take a while to heal. When it comes to foot care, toenail trimming is key. The trick here is little and often. Experts recommend trimming your nails every six to eight weeks, cutting them straight across using clean, sharp clippers. The best time is when you’re just out of the bath, but be careful not to cut them too short. Ingrown toenails are often the result of over-trimming, and besides being extremely painful, in extreme cases, may need an operation to resolve. 48
Some foot ailments can be slightly more bothersome, however. Ledderhose disease is a rare condition that causes connective tissue to build up and create hard lumps on the soles of the feet. The growths aren’t cancerous but they can cause pain, especially when walking. Home remedies include wearing soft shoe inserts, stretching, massages and anti-inflammatory drugs, but doctors might also recommend surgery in more serious cases. Although chiropody becomes more important as we age, taking good care of our feet also gets harder as we lose flexibility. If you’re experiencing any aches, pains or symptoms in your feet, visit your local chiropodist who will be able to help diagnose any issues and advise next steps.

Prevention is better than cure, so the best place to start is with your choice of shoe. A good pair of shoes should support and protect your feet, and allow natural movement when walking. Look for breathable fabrics, roomy toe-boxes, cushioned soles and low heels. Although wearing high heels once in a while won’t do much harm, long-term use has been linked to ingrown toenails and even arthritis.
Athlete’s foot is another common foot problem, caused by walking barefoot in communal spaces such as gyms, showers or swimming pools. This fungal infection usually starts between the toes, causes significant discomfort, itching and pain, and can even spread beyond the feet if not treated. Over-the-counter fungal creams are the best solution, but it’s also important to keep your feet clean and dry in-between treatments.

“Hey Nathan!” Derek hailed his neighbour’s young boy. Nathan had been riding his bike around the cul-de-sac, watching Derek dig his hole in the farmer’s paddock. The spoil heap was piling up around Derek, and his metal detector was still buzzing like a mosquito. Nathan squeezed his brakes to a halt. “What you doing down there?” Derek was now four feet down and still hadn’t found whatever was making the metal detector beep. Something big, possibly; something valuable, potentially. “I’m doing important archaeology,” Derek replied. “Would you mind knocking on the door of my house? Debbie will be at home. Ask her if you can have a can of pop for Derek. She’ll know what you mean.” “Are you allowed to dig that hole?” The boy didn’t move. “Yes, I’ve asked permission.” Nathan rang his bell gaily. “I like digging,” he said finally. “Good for you. If you fetch me a drink, I’ll let you use my spade.” The boy narrowed his eyes. “Am I allowed to play with your buzzy machine?” “Certainly not. This is a sensitive piece of equipment, not a toy.” The very idea, Derek thought. Debbie had grumbled for a week about how much he’d spent on his metal detector, but it would pay for itself in no time; where there’s muck there’s brass, as his father always said. Nathan looked at the metal detector with renewed admiration. “Can I just hold it?” “No, you can’t.” “But didn’t you say you were thirsty?” The child was a fierce negotiator. 52
“Alright,” Derek relented, “but only for one minute.” Nathan scrambled down into the hole, kicking dirt everywhere. “You switch it on here,” Derek demonstrated. “Then you point it at the ground and listen for the beep.” The boy put his hands around the handle while Derek watched anxiously. He aimed it at the ground and the detector chirped urgently. “What’s it doing?” Nathan asked in awe. “It’s telling us there’s something metal down below.” “What sort of something?” “Could be anything. A bronze helmet, a Viking hoard, a sword. Or it could even be something very small like a nail.” “Could it be a bike?” Nathan swung the detector up in the air, nearly taking Derek’s cap off. “Or even my toenails?” He swung it back at his feet. “Not toenails, no.” Derek was unable to wrestle the equipment from the child’s fierce grip. “It wouldn’t work on them.” “You just said nails could make it beep.” Derek wondered what on earth they were teaching kids at school these days. “Nails you hammer, but not toenails. They’re made of something else.” “Like what?” the boy asked earnestly. “I’m not sure,” Derek confessed. “What about yours?” He aimed it at Derek’s toes and the detector squealed louder than ever. “Your nails are made out of metal, listen.” He did it again. “That’s not my nails.” Derek slumped, realising he’d wasted a whole morning and now had a very big hole to fill in. “That’s my steel toe caps.” By Jackie Brewster

Whether you’re holidaying in the Canaries or Cornwall, sunscreen is essential. Here’s what to consider before you buy. Check the SPF The higher the sun protection factor (SPF), the less chance you’ll get burnt. The NHS recommends using at least SPF30 in the UK. However, if you’re going abroad or buying sunscreen for young children, you might want to opt for SPF45 or SPF50. Remember, getting burnt just once every two years can triple your risk of melanoma skin cancer. The SPF rating relates to UVB rays. You also need to protect yourself from UVA rays, so look for a sunscreen with at least 4-star UVA protection. Natural tanning Sunscreens either use chemical or mineral sun blockers. There are pros and cons to both. Several of the chemicals used in sunscreens have been found to enter the bloodstream at worrying levels. (In particular, you might want to avoid octocrylene.) Mineral sunscreens (e.g. ones made with zinc oxide) are less likely to enter your bloodstream but can be more difficult to rub in. Protect the planet Chemicals such as oxybenzone can have devastating effects on coral reefs and other aquatic
life, so some holiday destinations have banned sunscreen containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. You don’t even need to swim in the sea for your sunscreen to have an impact, as it can enter the water system when you have a shower. So, look for a ‘reef-safe’ sunscreen. Good options include those by Green People, Alba Botanica and Badger. Face the day Moisturisers and foundations often contain SPF, but it’s unlikely you’ll apply enough to give you the full protection. Instead, look for a facial sunscreen. Some even have added skincare ingredients such as hyaluronic acid. Fake it ‘til you make it Tempted to skip the sun cream because you want a tan? Some sunscreens contain a tan activator, so you really don’t need to take the risk. If you want a natural-looking tan before your holiday, why not book in for a spray tan? The days of streaky orange tans are long gone. Decent fake tans are now almost impossible to tell from the real thing. Apply your sunscreen 30 minutes before going out in the sun, and then reapply every two hours. You’ll need to reapply it after swimming, even if the sunscreen is water-resistant. Be generous. You’ll need two to three tablespoons’ worth to give you the advertised SPF. If sunscreen irritates your skin or makes you itch, switch to a fragrance-free one designed for sensitive skin. Take care Sunscreens don’t provide 100% protection from skin damage or prevent heat stroke. So, try to keep in the shade if the temperature soars. Cover up if you do need to go out (e.g. with a hat, sunglasses and a loose-fitting long-sleeved top). And drink plenty of water so you don’t get dehydrated.
