Staying Warm in Winter As we age, we can lose body heat faster than when we were young. With the temperature dropping, it is important to stay warm and look out for the elderly who are at higher risk of hypothermia. Here are our suggestions for helping stay warm: • Have doors and windows draft proofed. • Wear layers of clothes and invest in thermals. • Use a heated blanket or throw. • Use thick curtains and draw them at dusk. • Consume warm food and drinks throughout the day. • Move around and encourage the blood to pump around the body. As the elderly are more vulnerable to the cold, check on elderly neighbours and loved ones regularly. Changes to the body that come with ageing can make it harder for them to be aware of getting cold.

Who takes responsibility when things go wrong?
Recently I experienced three separate incidents where it was clear to me that those who are employed as public servants and who should be helping, or serving the public, were in fact part of the problem. The first was a very minor issue when not one of my neighbours who had paid for the permit to have their garden rubbish uplifted had received them in time for the next uplift. When I phoned the Council on behalf of some neighbours, to ask that all missing permits be sent out, I was told that each person would need to contact the Council individually, as it would be a “breach of Data Protection” otherwise. This was absolute nonsense, as I pointed out that all the Council needed to do was to check who had paid for permits and which of those people had not received them. Possibly hundreds of households had paid for a service which was not delivered, yet excuses were made up in order to do nothing. The next incident related to the footpaths through St. Margaret’s Park, which are a danger because they have not been maintained. A local Councillor was told that the paths had not been adopted by the Council and so had not been fixed. Again, complete rubbish, as they are in a Council owned park, but excuses were put forward by an official, again to do nothing about the problem. The last and most important issue is the number of accidents caused by both the temporary bollards, grey bases and

Many people are aware of the number of major and minor accidents caused in recent months, from those suffering falls, bumps, bruises, fractures, broken ribs and sadly one death. Too often those victims are fobbed off when they try to get an apology or compensation for their suffering. Many of those hurt no longer report accidents, as they know the result will not be worth the time and effort involved. I am supporting one particular case, and to help them more, I would appreciate if you have information about any accidents caused by the road and footpath works, temporary or permanent, that you drop me a line in confidence.

Pay attention when people talk about the sudden onset of bizarre and unusual ailments. This is especially true at this time of year. The answer can be found in a little word with big implications: stress. Our bodies endure stress, which can be simply defined as anything that causes a reaction. There are three main areas in which we experience stress: physical, emotional and chemical. Stress involving any of these areas can affect us profoundly. Here are some of the common signs of stress, along with ways to reduce your stress burden. STRESS SIGNALS
WAYS TO REDUCE STRESS
Unusual fatigue: Stress weighs on you physically, emotionally and mentally. It wears you down and drains you. Can’t get out of bed in the morning? Stress may be what’s keeping you there.
Work it off: Find the time to exercise. Whether it’s a quick trip to the gym, a peaceful run or a brisk walk with family or friends, exercise puts the focus somewhere else for a while. Biochemically, exercise has a big anti-stress benefit. It helps reduce levels of the stress hormone (cortisol) and increases your “feel-good” hormones, endorphins.
Sleeplessness: You may feel like sleeping for a day or two, but stress tends to keep you up at night. Impulsivity: If you find your eating habits changing suddenly, you may be turning to comfort foods to deal with stress. The same is true with impulse buying, particularly when it involves items you don’t really need. Anger/impatience: Stress can make you short-tempered and easily roused to anger, even if your demeanour is normally calm, quiet and reserved. Lack of concentration/forgetfulness: Stress usually occupies our mental time, so much so that we can have trouble remembering things or make more mistakes. Never forget your keys in the morning? When you’re stressed, you just might. Physical ailments: Back pain, neck pain and pain in general that doesn’t have a clear cause (e.g., an injury) is often related to stress. The same is true for colds and flu; stress can lower your immune system, increasing your risk of developing illness.
Get away from it: This can be challenging, but doing what you can to distract yourself can go a long way toward reducing stress. Schedule a holiday, visit old friends, take a long walk; whatever it takes to remove yourself from your stress environment. Smile about it: It’s much harder for stress to exist in a fun, laughter-filled environment, so put yourself in a position to smile when you’re under stress. After all, laughter truly is the best natural medicine. Talk about it: When you’re stressed, your mind can be a continual stream of negative, overwhelming, stressed-out thoughts. Don’t keep it all to yourself; sometimes the best way to reduce your stress is to vent about it and get a neutral perspective, rather than staying in a bottled-up, stressed-out state. Taking Shape
Making use of leftover turkey 1. Preheat the oven to 130°C / fan 110°C / gas mark ½. can be quite a challenge. This 2. Season the turkey dish is perfect for feeding a drumsticks and, in batches, place them skin-side down in crowd – and the slow cooking the pan. 3. Add the onion and garlic to the pan and cook slowly over low heat until they start to go slightly brown. Remove any excess fat from the pan and return the drumsticks to the pan, together with the thyme and bay leaves. Add the Madeira wine, bring to the boil and reduce until it starts to glaze the meat. Add 1 litre of stock to the pan and bring to the boil again. 4. Place a tight-fitting lid on the pan and cook in the preheated oven for around 2½-3 hours until the meat starts to come away from the bone. 5. Meanwhile, fry the lardons in the remaining oil. Remove from the pan and then fry the mushrooms in the same pan until lightly coloured. Return the lardons to the pan and remove from the heat. 6. Now, make the sauce: place the remaining stock in a pan and boil until it reduces to approximately 200ml. Add the double cream and bring to the boil again. Stir in the mustard and remove from the heat. 7. When cooked, remove the turkey from the oven. Take the legs out of the pan and set aside. Pass the braising liquid from the turkey legs through a fine sieve. Place the liquid in a pan with the remaining butter and reduce the liquid down to a light glaze. Add the truffle paste and set aside. 8. To serve, place the turkey legs on a serving dish, cover in the truffle liquid, and top with the mushrooms, lardons and roasted Chantenay carrots. Serve with the mustard sauce separately.

Although it’s not a diagnosable medical condition, burnout shouldn’t be ignored. It doesn’t go away on its own; on the contrary, ignoring the signs could make it worse and cause further harm to your physical and mental health. If you suspect you’re suffering from burnout, here are some tips to get your mental health back on track. The term ‘burnout’ was first coined in the 1970s, but it wasn’t until 2019 that the World Health Organisation (WHO) officially recognised it as an occupational phenomenon resulting from “chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed”. Of course, everyone has experienced workrelated stress, so how is burnout different? The key is in the word ‘chronic’. While stressors come and go, burnout is a state of complete physical and emotional exhaustion that can occur as a result of long-term stress. The symptoms range from constant fatigue and exhaustion to self-doubt and procrastination. Given that a stressful working environment is the most significant contributing factor, many sufferers can end up feeling trapped in their jobs, defeated and helpless. Unfortunately, this is a problem that has only worsened since the pandemic. With large swathes of the population now working from home, many people find it difficult to set boundaries and strike a healthy work-life balance. So, what is the solution If you suspect you’re suffering from burnout, here are some tips to get your mental health back on track. So, what is the solution? Noticing the signs is the first step. Ask yourself: Have you become cynical or critical at work? Do you drag yourself to work and have trouble getting started? Have you become irritable or impatient with colleagues or customers? The love of Christmas and its history never dies. But in the 21st century, technology, manufacturing and choice have subtly changed some of the ways we follow these traditions.
Trees Christmas trees came over from Germany towards the end of the 1700s and were popularised by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Trees would be decorated with real candles, strings of glass beads, candies and handmade ornaments of paper, wax, silver wire and blown glass. And now…? It’s still very much part of Christmas, but many find buying and disposing of a fresh tree a hassle. The real thing is by far the most environmentally friendly option, but if you already have an artificial tree, keep it and keep using it.
Cards The first recorded Christmas card was sent way back in 1611 by German physician Michael Maier to King James I of England and his son, the Prince of Wales. However, exchanging cards at Christmas didn’t get going for another 200 years! Enter Sir Henry Cole – a prominent civil servant who introduced the Penny Post system. And now…? With electronic communication – email, messaging and video calls – the sending of cards has significantly declined. However, sending a tangible card to someone you don’t regularly speak with is a much more personal way of keeping in touch. 58
Pudding The rich, fruity pudding originated in the 14th century as a preChristmas fasting meal made from porridge, meat and raisins, with the consistency of soup. Ingredients such as flour and eggs were added over the years until the recipe evolved into the dessert we know today. Small silver “charms” were once added to the mixture: a silver coin to bring wealth to the recipient, a silver thimble for thrift, a wishbone for luck and an anchor to symbolise “safe harbour”.
