I am delighted that as we are becoming used to less restrictions the wonderful groups and charities in the community have more to offer - you will find many pieces of information throughout the directory. You will also find information from the local churches regarding their services over the Christmas period, and the usual Christmas post dates are included for your reference. I would like to thank all of my advertisers for their continued support especially over the last 18 months, and for the wonderful contributors, for all of their local information. Thank you, readers, for your kind comments, and feedback too. I hope that you all have a lovely time over the festive season, and wish you all the very best for 2022.

Best wishes,

Jill

The season of giving... to nature

Keep your Spine in Shape Your spine is the backbone of your entire body – literally and figuratively. That means poor spinal health may negatively impact you from head to toe. How can you keep your spine in shape?

The gift that keeps on giving There’s no better time to start giving to nature on a permanent basis. Most of us could improve our habits, so that we give more than we take. Within around two years, new developments in England will be expected to demonstrate that their projects will increase biodiversity by at least ten per cent. Known as Biodiversity Net Gain, this is a big change from what happens at the moment. The new Environment Bill will make it necessary for developers to use ecological features and environmental enhancements to protect and improve existing natural habitat and green infrastructure.

Sorbus, the rowan tree: provides food for at least 160 species of insect and, of course, birds and small mammals love the berries.

Anyone with a garden can start right away, as we should all be nurturing nature so that biodiversity can triumph. You need to select plants with ample benefits for insects, allow wood piles and untidy areas to become part of the border, and use vertical fences and walls for further planting.

Malus, the native crab apple: provides homes for at least 90 insect species. Many different insects visit the spring blossom, then birds and other creatures eat the fruits. Even ornamental varieties of this delightful tree provide rich biodiversity benefits.

Best plants for wildlife Most gardens have room for a tree, if only a small one. Trees and shrubs can support a remarkable number of living things, so if you only have time to plant just one thing in your garden, make it a tree, a shrub or something that provides positive benefits for small creatures. If you have a little more time, a mixed hedge is just about the best you can offer wildlife.

Amelanchier, the June berry or serviceberry tree: has something to offer wildlife during several seasons. Early spring flowers for pollinators make this small tree look like a white cloud. It also provides multiple nesting opportunities for birds and juicy berries during the late summer.

Betula: there are 521 species of invertebrates that are known to feed on birch trees and more than 100 of these are exclusive to that particular type of tree.

Conifers: really are worth having! Some have earned negative press over the years but this doesn’t detract from their value to wildlife. There’s probably no better tree for providing nesting sites and protection for a wide range of creatures. Flowering shrubs and perennials: choose single flowers over double, every time. They have an open shape that allows access for the pollinators and nectar-drinkers. Look for yellow stamens within a flower; these will support insects. Purple and blue flowers are best for bees! buddleia, catmint, lavender, pulmonaria, penstemon, allium and purple-flowering hardy geraniums can all be seen clearly. Ensure there is something flowering from early spring right through to autumn and even winter. Butterflies love hebes, sedum (Hylotelephium varieties), Verbena bonariensis, Origanum, Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’, buddleia, scabious and many wild flowers such as knapweed. EXERCISES (to Do & Not to Do)

NUTRITION ESSENTIALS

Some common exercises help promote spinal health in the form of proper posture while others promote poor posture and put the spine at risk. A strong core supports the spine, whereas a weak core can lead to pain and injury. To build the core, think bent-leg knee raises, stability ball exercises and other exercises that strengthen the core muscles (remembering to keep your spine protected at all times by avoiding rounding the back / neck). On the other hand, avoid exercises / movements that unduly stress the spine: slumping while sitting and bending forward immediately after sitting come to mind, as do exercises that make you prone to rounding your back (traditional sit-ups, toe-touches, etc.). Please seek exercise advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

Believe it or not, certain foods promote a healthy spine (and vice versa). For example, adequate water intake is necessary to nourish not only the body’s cells, but also the spinal intervertebral discs. As you might imagine, water helps keep the discs (and thus the spine) from getting stiff and becoming subject to injury. In addition, an antiinflammatory diet is key to preventing back pain and other spine problems due to inflammation. Think foods such as omega-3 fish and lean proteins, fresh produce, avocado and olive oil while reducing intake of pro-inflammatory foods (most fast foods and processed foods, sugar-laden sweets, etc.).

SLEEP MATTERS Your sleep position and the overall quality of your sleep play a big role in spinal health. The ideal position for the spine during sleep places you on your back with a pillow underneath the knees. As you might imagine, lying on your stomach is the worst position. Your pillow and mattress also matter, so make sure you choose the right ones for you, or your spine will let you know with neck and/or back pain. (Talk to your healthcare professional for suggestions.)

CHIROPRACTIC CARE No conversation about spinal health would be complete without mentioning chiropractic, an entire health care profession founded on the principle that a healthy, properly aligned spine may have far-reaching effects on the entire body. Research asserts chiropractic’s effectiveness in treating back pain, neck pain and various other musculoskeletal conditions, and the goal of chiropractic care is to improve spinal health and help prevent pain from returning. • Fake fur in interiors can take various forms, from small rugs to inviting throws, cushion covers to bean bags – and even entire stools or chairs. A little tends to go a long way, however. Just a couple of furry accents is probably the ideal number, though at Christmas you may want to go a little more over the top and add in some fluffy baubles, stockings or even a furry tree ‘skirt’. • If realism is an important consideration, look for longer hair and a variety of tones within the fur. Natural shades are, obviously, the ones to choose, bearing in mind that creams and ivories look more lifelike than bright white. Faux furs also come in a wide range of interesting artificial colours and, in winter, brighter, jewel-like tones can add welcome notes of warmth. • To make sure your faux-fur rugs, cushions, throws and other items last as long as possible, always follow the instructions on the care label. Usually, you’ll be able to put them in the machine on a cold, lowspin, delicates cycle, with mild detergent, then press excess water out and air dry to ensure they remain the right shape. You can detangle and tease the pile back into fluffy softness, either before or after washing, by using a wide-tooth comb or brush. By Katherine Sorrell

Can you support local businesses and The Corstorphine Trust? By John Barrett - former local Member of Parliament and Councillor Many local businesses have experienced a very tough two years and those who have survived the pandemic now need your support more than ever. If you take the time to look at what is on offer in local shops, or at the adverts in the Corstorphine Grapevine, and on a number of local web sites like Corstorphine Chat, you will see that there is a wide range of goods, products, and services available locally, without the need to head into town or out of town. One new business which has opened recently is the Dower House Café, which has opened in the Dower House, the large cream coloured building in the corner of St. Margaret’s Park. This was recently opened by a young couple called Sayana and Euan, who have worked with the Corstorphine Trust on this new venture. After months of searching for potential café locations, they contacted The Corstorphine Trust at the beginning of the year, and they were delighted when The Trust were equally excited about the prospect of a new Café in the centre of Corstorphine village, and that they wanted to work together to open one in The Dower House. The café is now open Tuesday - Sunday 8am-4pm selling a wide selection of hot drinks, soft drinks, paninis, toasties, soup, and a wonderful selection of homemade cakes. For those who love coffee, cake, and our community, they can’t wait to welcome you to The Dower House Café. The Corstorphine Trust is a local community association and is well known to many who live in Corstorphine and are interested in its history and the community. For many years it has been at the heart of the local community. The Trust relies on its volunteers to work on a wide range of interesting projects and to look after the archives, museum and much more. The Corstorphine Trust is based at the Corstorphine Heritage Centre, The Dower House, St Margaret’s Park Edinburgh, EH12 7SX and they are now looking for people who have time to lend a hand to volunteer, so that they can extend their opening hours. If you are interested and would like more information, please Phone 0131 316 4246 or email info@corstorphinetrust.co.uk or to find out more simply take a look at the Trust’s web site at www.corstorphinetrust.co.uk 48

Books make great presents, especially when you can borrow them back in January… Big Panda and Tiny Dragon – James Norbury Fans of The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse, and other illustrated books will love this new offering by James Norbury. Each of the handdrawn illustrations is accompanied by a short conversation between a panda and a dragon, offering words of wisdom we can all learn from. A book to treasure and to dip into time and time again.

Freckles – Cecilia Ahern Allegra has made a life for herself in Dublin, working as a traffic warden with a sideline as an artist’s model. She enjoys the routine and the rules, but she’s in Dublin for a reason and needs to pluck up the courage to see her mission through. A chance encounter with an angry driver makes Allegra re-evaluate her life and gives her a new purpose. A light-hearted, humorous tale with some darker undertones, Freckles is sure to appeal to a range of readers. The Exiles – Christina Baker Kline Buying for a fan of historical fiction? Exiles is a solid choice. Several characters’ lives become entwined when pregnant Evangeline is sentenced to hard labour in Australia in 1840. On the ship, she meets teenage Hazel. Meanwhile, Mathinna is faced with losing her family and indigenous community when the governor and his wife decide she needs ‘refining’. A rich, multi-layered story with some shocking plot twists, The Exiles is the perfect book for curling up with on Boxing Day. All In – Billy Jean King Former tennis pro Billy Jean King famously defeated Bobby Riggs in what would become known as the ‘Battle of the Sexes’. Since then, King has fought many more battles, from striving to be taken seriously as a female athlete to campaigning for LGBTQ+ rights. Her long-awaited autobiography also reveals the more personal challenges King has overcome, from an eating disorder to near-bankruptcy. A must for tennis fans and autobiography lovers. Ottolenghi Test Kitchen: Shelf Love – Yotam Ottolenghi and Noor Murad If you’re buying for someone who loves poring over recipe books, you can’t go wrong with Ottolenghi. For his latest book, Ottolenghi has partnered with head chef Noor Murad. The result is a book packed with recipes to help home cooks to impress with less stress. The recipes are also adaptable, so the reader can bring their own twist to a dish or use up leftovers. Just make sure the person you’re buying for promises to make you the Upside-Down Lemon, Maple and Vanilla Pudding… The Replacement – Melanie Golding A delicious thriller for a reader to sink their teeth into on a cold winter’s night, The Replacement centres on Ruby and her sister, Joanna. The book starts as Ruby claims a seemingly abandoned child as her own. Soon after, police detective Joanna is called to investigate the attempted murder of Ruby’s neighbour. Elements of folk lore and mythology are woven into the story, adding a unique twist to a familiar genre. 52

Property Maintenance

Providing Excellent Service for over 35 years. jandljoinery@btinternet.com

It’s only relatively recently that we have had year-round availability of fresh produce. But more than any other time of year, Christmas is when we love tradition and these are some of our favourites.

Potatoes A 2020 survey by Asda put potatoes as the most popular Christmas food, although we are used to eating them all year round. The edges of floury potatoes are the bits that go crispy, so Maris Piper is best but King Edward or Desiree are also excellent. Just don’t go for a waxy potato – that won’t work at all.

Cranberries Turkey without cranberry sauce? Unheard of! Most people buy the ready-made sauce in jars for their meal, but you could try making your own. Otherwise cranberries can be swapped for raisins, used in bread pudding, or the feature ingredient in sweet baked breads and cakes. Chestnuts Although you probably won’t be roasting your chestnuts on an open fire as the song goes, they make a regular appearance at Christmas. They bring a caramelised nutty flavour to sprouts, Christmas puddings, turkey stuffing, desserts and more. Unlike other nuts, chestnuts have a high starch and water content but low protein and fat levels.

Satsumas and Tangerines Bright citrus fruits bring fresh colour to the table in winter and satsumas and tangerines are at their seasonal peak in early winter, albeit we don’t typically grow them in the UK.

Brussel Sprouts Some love them, others think they are a form of punishment! But Brussel sprouts peak in popularity in December. Part of the problem for the haters is the perception that sprouts are very bitter, but British farmers have modified their crops to ensure most varieties they grow now are sweeter and milder – maybe this year it’s time to give them a second chance.

Parsnips There’s a reason we associate parsnips with Christmas dinner – it’s prime season for them. They can be boiled just as carrots are, being of the same family, but more often they’ll be roasted until the flesh starts to caramelise and served with any roast dinner. 60

Twelve days of Christmas Health

1 One person in the room. It can all get a bit much with full-on socialising. Don’t be embarrassed about booking in some me time and recharging your batteries before starting up again.

5 Five portions of vegetables a day. Christmas Day’s dinner will probably reach the target easily. But keep an eye on your intake every other day too.

9 Nine days of a cold. The average cold lasts around nine days. All the advice on how to avoid Covid applies for colds too, so keep 62 washing those hands.

2 Two glasses, but if one is alcohol, the other should be water. This will both keep you hydrated and slow down your alcohol intake meaning you’ll be ready to start up again the next day.

6 Six grams of salt. The British Heart Foundation recommends a maximum of six grams of salt per day – about one level teaspoon. Remember to count salt in prepared food.

10 Ten…thousand steps a day is an ideal goal to improve your health and your mood. Over 4,000 steps is also good though, provided they aren’t all between the sofa and the fridge.

3 Three French hens… or British. Eggs are pretty much the perfect food; they contain a little bit of almost every nutrient we need – loads of vitamins and minerals including calcium.

7 Seven swans a-swimming. Not only is swimming good for your cardiovascular health and muscle toning, it does it without putting strain on your body.

11 Eleven maids a-milking. Milk is very good for you – everybody knows that. Although milk alternatives don’t have the same nutrition, if you are eating a balanced diet, plantbased will be fine.

4 Four calling friends. Christmas isn’t always non-stop happiness. Whether it’s you that needs to reach out, or it’s friends that would appreciate a call, this is the perfect time to do it.
