“I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren.

Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. Apple Cider Spritz

Ingredients

3 oz. apple cider

1 oz. Aperol

Large pinch of pumpkin spice mix or ground cinnamon

Ice

Apple slices and a cinnamon stick, for garnish

3 oz. Prosecco, cava, or sparkling wine

Directions

In a large wine glass, combine apple cider, Aperol, and pumpkin spice. Stir to distribute spice. Fill glass with ice and add garnish with apple and cinnamon. Top off with Prosecco and enjoy!

Black Magic Margaritas

Ingredients

2 tbsp. black sanding sugar

2 c. ice

4 oz. silver tequila

2 oz. triple sec

1/2 c. lime juice

Red food coloring

Blue food coloring

Green food coloring

Lime slices, for garnish

Directions

Rim two glasses with a lime slice and dip in black sanding sugar. Divide tequila, triple sec, and lime juice between two glasses and stir to combine. Add food coloring until desired black color is achieved. Add ice and garnish with a slice of lime before serving.

HERE’S A TIP

Use an empty paper towel roll to store plastic grocery bags. Just stuff to capacity. These “bag sticks” are easy to store in a drawer or even mounted on the side of a trash can with double-stick tape.

Would you like to know some alternative uses for hair conditioner. Here you go: shaving lotion for legs or face; makeup remover; ouch-free bandage removal; soften makeup brushes or paintbrushes before storage; remove knots out of doll hair or costume wigs; wash delicates (think silks and pantyhose); and rub on a shower rod to help curtain glide effortlessly.

Keep nail-polish bottles easy to open by rubbing a little bit of petroleum jelly inside the cap of the bottle.

If you are getting your outdoor furniture ready for storage, here’s a great cleaning idea. Load it all in the back of a truck, take it to a self-serve car wash and clean with the pressure hoses. Let dry, and it’s ready.

When cleaning glass tabletops or chrome fixtures, try using newspaper instead of paper towels or rags. There is no lint left behind, and newspaper gives a better shine.

SEASONS OF CHANGE

Just like nature, marriage changes like the seasons of the year—spring, summer, autumn, and winter. A strong and happy marriage is one that thrives through each season. Every couple may experience each season, but not in the same order. The one constant in marriage is change.

Spring

Spring brings warmth, optimism, and excitement. Couples begin this phase with matrimony. Both individuals become invariably dependent on each other, believing that their spouse can fulfill their dreams and expectations.

Summer is the season of love and fun, usually accompanied by the birth of children. Unfortunately, partners usually tend to drift in this season due to the lack of intimate communication, resulting from the demands of rearing children.

When couples make it through this season of marriage, they usually realize—once their kids are launched—their focus should have been on growing their relationship. As partners begin to focus on their marriage, they are able to rekindle the love that brought them together.

Autumn is a season of transition. Couples watch their children get married and become parents. At this point, older couples tend to find joy and happiness through their grandchildren. Additionally, during this season, couples usually begin to consider how they want their life to proceed—some may want to retire and enjoy life, while others may want to combine work and rest.

Winter is the final season of marriage, usually marked by illness and eventual death of a partner. Some couples have to deal with the sudden twists of fate, while others have the blessing to reflect on all the important moments in their life and realize how they helped each other transform and grow. These couples spend each moment by trying to enjoy the time they have left, and work to make each day count.

Couples constantly transition from one ‘season’ to another, and while changes may not present themselves annually—you shouldn’t worry if you’ve been stuck in a season for too long. The thing to remember is, the key to a happy marriage is to approach every season with a positive and loving attitude.
