If you’re feeling anxious about a change or transition in your life, you’re not alone! Whether it’s moving to a new home, retiring, changing routines, dealing with an empty nest, or simply entering a new season of life, transitions can bring a mix of excitement, uncertainty and stress. Most of us naturally prefer what feels familiar. Our routines give us a sense of comfort and control, so when something changes, it can leave us wondering, what happens next? Even positive changes can bring anxiety because they require us to step outside what we know. The good news is that there are ways to make transitions easier.
Recognize Your Emotions
First, give yourself permission to feel whatever you’re feeling. Anxiety, sadness, excitement and even fear are all normal responses to change. Instead of judging your emotions, recognize them and remind yourself that they are temporary. Feeling uncertain doesn’t mean you can’t handle what comes next.
Focus on What You Can Control
Ask yourself, what is within my control, and what isn’t? Gathering information and planning can help reduce uncertainty. Break a major transition into

smaller steps and tackle one thing at a time. You don’t have to figure everything out today.
Stay Flexible

Be Patient wth Yourself
Adjusting to a new chapter takes time. Give yourself permission to settle in at your own pace. Deep breathing, exercise, listening to music, watching a favorite show, spending time with friends or enjoying meaningful activities can all help you stay grounded.
Create a New Routine
When life changes, establishing a new routine can provide comfort and structure. Start small. Choose a few activities that bring purpose or enjoyment and build from there.

ART WITH A PURPOSE
For Show Low artist Tim Oldham, working with metal began as a hobby. Today, it has become something much more meaningful—a way to share hope, kindness and encouragement with people facing one of life’s most difficult challenges. Tim’s perspective changed dramatically after a series of life-altering events. Following a divorce after 26 years of marriage, he was diagnosed with a CSF leak that caused spinal fluid to leak into his brain cavity and out his nose. The condition resulted in a brain tumor, and doctors told him he had only a 5% chance of surviving the surgery. “I told the doctor that God had made some promises that hadn’t happened yet, so I was going to pray, he could doctor, and we would be fine,” Tim recalls. The surgery, expected to take three and a half hours, lasted nearly seven. When Tim awoke, his doctor told him he was one in 7 million to survive. He jokingly suggested Tim go buy a lottery ticket. Surviving that experience changed Tim forever. His artwork became more than pieces of metal. It became a way to express his gratitude for life and to encourage others never to give up. “My motto became, ‘Never give up no matter what you’re facing, and always expect a miracle,’” Tim says. “My pieces went from objects cut out of metal to pieces that radiate love and a passion for life.” Perhaps the most meaningful expression of that philosophy is Tim’s Cancer Angels. He creates these special metal angels and gives them away to people he meets who are battling cancer. He doesn’t charge for the angels. Instead, proceeds from his other artwork help cover the cost of creating and mailing Cancer Angels. The idea came to Tim while attending a men’s ministry in Canada. “God showed me the angel and told me to give it away to those who need them,” he explains. For Tim, the angels represent much more than a beautiful piece of artwork. They are a reminder that someone cares. Through his Cancer Angels Foundation, Tim continues to turn his own survival story into a message of hope—one angel, one person and one act of kindness at a time. SEASONS OF CHANGE
Just like nature, marriage changes just like the seasons of the year—spring, summer, autumn, and winter. A strong and happy marriage is one that thrives through each season. Every couple may experience each season, but not in the same order. The one constant in marriage is change.
Spring brings warmth, optimism, and excitement. Couples begin this phase with matrimony. Both individuals become invariably dependent on each other, believing that their spouse can fulfill their dreams and expectations.
Autumn is a season of transition. Couples watch their children get married and become parents. At this point, older couples tend to find joy and happiness through their grandchildren. Additionally, during this season, couples usually begin to consider how they want their life to proceed—some may want to retire and enjoy life, while others may want to combine work and rest.
Summer is the season of love and fun,
usually accompanied by the birth of children. Unfortunately, partners usually tend to drift in this season due to the lack of intimate communication, resulting from the demands of rearing children.
Winter is the final season of marriage, usually marked by illness, and the eventual death of a partner. Some couples have to deal with the sudden twists of fate, while others have the blessing to reflect on all the important moments in their life and realize how they helped each other transform and grow. These couples spend each moment by trying to enjoy the time they have left and work to make each day count.
When couples make it through this season of marriage, they usually realize—once their kids are launched—their focus should have been on growing their relationship. As partners begin to focus on their marriage, they are able to rekindle the love that brought them together.

ONE STEP AT A TIME
Life is ever changing. When faced with life’s inevitable ups and downs, having the resiliency to stand up to and meet new challenges is imperative. It certainly isn’t always easy, but as a professional life coaches suggest, weathering change is always possible if you keep these tips in mind:
1. Recognize that change is happening. It is common for people to ignore the change that is happening around them for various reasons. Denying or delaying your reaction, however, can often be more stressful than accepting the change early on. Remind yourself that things will be okay, and you’ve endured change before and been fine on the other side.
2. Write down the positive.
Not all change is bad even if it seems so at the time. Think back to times in your life when you feared change, but in the end, what you feared most didn’t happen at all. In fact, you thrived. Change can be scary, but it’s not always bad.
3. When possible, prepare.
Sometimes we see change coming, in those cases, such as moving to a new city, or retiring from your job, you can take steps to prepare yourself. Even in the midst of chaos we can see light at the end of the tunnel. Knowledge is power and can build your confidence that the change you’re embarking on will be a success.
4. Quiet your mind.
In the midst of a change we fear, our thoughts can be our worst enemy. Be conscious of what your mind is telling you. Are your fears rational or are you possibly only allowing yourself to focus on the worst possible outcome? If calming your mind seems difficult you can try relaxation techniques such as mindfulness or deep breathing.
5. Be kind to yourself.
In times of change we can feel a bit out of control. This is normal. Remember to give yourself a break and be kind to yourself. We all struggle at times, no one can operate at 100 percent all of the time. Forgive yourself for these times.
6. Talk it out.
Finally, if you still find yourself truly struggling with the changes you are facing, seek help. Knowing yourself well enough to realize you need assistance is a sign of strength. No one goes through life alone. Confiding in family or friends can provide you the added support you’re needing. So can seeking help through therapy.
