Does what doesn’t kill you; make you stronger? Now that’s an interesting question in the context of relationships, don’t you think? Ernest Hemmingway wrote in Farewell to Arms that “The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places.” His point is that if we do not allow ourselves to bend enough to be broken, life will kill us. Here are some thoughts applying this wisdom to relationships. Rigidity in relationships can be deadly Trying to force change in our partner will not work. Forcing results in an immovable object meeting an irresistible force. Shifting must be voluntary. • Consider developing the art of bending or compromise. • Choose regularly to spontaneously give a little rather than stand your ground. • Soften your heart, because hardened hearts shatter. Choose to become better, not bitter The choice is always there. When we let hurt metastasize into bitterness it creates relational toxicity. Someone once said, “Bitterness is like drinking poison and expecting someone else to die.” • Don’t deny relational hurts but don’t wallow in them. • Keep short accounts and forgive easily. • Ask yourself: What do “I” need to learn from this? Attitude matters We all create a narrative in our head about relational wounds. It’s the story we tell ourselves. These stories construct a mindset or vibe we put out. Attitudes also become filters limiting what we see. • Eavesdrop on your internal narrative about your partner. Ask, “What’s an alternate and generous story I can tell myself about my partner?” • Cultivate the attitude of looking for the best in your partner, not the worst. • Surround yourself with those who tell stories about the “best” in their spouses.

A: Yes, some stores that sell dogs, cats or other pets have been offering “pet loans” so that buyers can finance the several thousands of dollars the pets cost. The catch: Some of these loans actually are leases, with much longer payment periods. According to the ASPCA, these “leases” can result in pet owners, who thought they were paying $1,500 to $3,000 for a purebred dog, shelling out more than $5,000. And if the pet dies during the lease period, the buyers are expected to continue making payments! These leases are not illegal except in Nevada and California, where they’ve banned this practice.

October is the perfect time to get to those home maintenance items you keep shuffling to the side. The good news is most can be done yourself in a minimal amount of time. Doing the small things on this list will increase the efficiency of your home while keeping your energy costs down! Change your filters Jump on a ladder and get those fresh air filters in! Don’t forget the one most often missed—the furnace filter (which is usually at the bottom of the unit). Changing it or cleaning it will make the furnace work more efficiently when the weather cools. Check weather stripping Can you see a lot of light under that door? Chances are you need new weather stripping to seal it up again. You can buy weather stripping at any home improvement store. Just follow the directions for installation. Change batteries This is the perfect time to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Clean dryer vents A clogged dryer vent can cause fires. Simply remove the silver venting attached to the dryer and vacuum out the vent. Clean ceiling fan blades When you climb up to reverse the fan’s direction for the winter, clean those fan blades. It’s amazing how much dust they collect!

Big events that occurred in the month of October
October 17, 1931 Gangster Al Capone is sentenced to 11 years in prison for tax evasion and fined $80,000, signaling the downfall of one of the most notorious criminals of the 1920s and 1930s. Alphonse Gabriel Capone was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1899 to Italian immigrants. October 18, 1867 U.S. takes possession of Alaska after purchasing the territory from Russia for $7.2 million, or less than two cents an acre. At the time, it was not known that gold was there, and it seemed difficult for Russia to defend in the event of a war between the two countries. The Alaska purchase comprised 586,412 square miles, about twice the size of Texas, and was championed by William Henry Seward. Alaska was admitted to the Union as a state in 1959. October 22, 1962 The Cuban Missile Crisis begins. In a televised speech of extraordinary gravity, President John F. Kennedy announces that U.S. spy planes have discovered Soviet missile bases in Cuba. These missile sites— under construction but nearing completion—housed medium-range missiles capable of striking a number of major cities in the United States, including Washington, D.C. October 26, 1881 The Earp brothers face off against the ClantonMcLaury gang in a legendary shootout at the OK Corral in Tombstone, Arizona. After silver was discovered nearby in 1877, Tombstone quickly grew into one of the richest mining towns in the Southwest. The struggle between these two groups for control of Tombstone and Cochise County ended in a blaze of gunfire at the OK Corral. Tom and Frank McLaury and Billy Clanton were killed. Ike Clanton subsequently filed murder charges against the Earps and Doc Holliday, but the lawmen were exonerated by a local justice of the peace after a 30-day preliminary hearing and then by a local grand jury. October 27, 1904 New York’s subway opens at 2:35 in the afternoon. New York City Mayor George McClellan takes the controls in the inaugural run of the city’s innovative new rapid transit system. world’s oldest underground train network (opened in 1863), the New York City subway soon became the largest American system.
October 30, 1938 Orson Welles causes a nationwide panic with his broadcast of “War of the Worlds”—a realistic radio dramatization of a Martian invasion of Earth. Orson Welles was only 23 years old when his Mercury Theater company decided to update H.G. Wells’ 19th-century science fiction novel War of the Worlds for national radio. October 31, 1892 The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle, is published. The book was the first collection of Holmes stories, which Conan Doyle had been publishing in magazines since 1887.

A survey from a few years ago revealed that doctors themselves believe that patient trust is waning. Of more than 2,000 physicians surveyed, 87 percent said that patients trust doctors less than they did 10 years ago. Online physician reviews came under fire in another survey when approximately half of patients said they only somewhat trust the reviews. That’s something to consider when using those reviews to find a new doctor. What happens when we don’t entirely trust our doctor? We tend not to listen. We might, therefore, not take it seriously when we’re told to cut back on sodium or get a flu shot—both of which (or anything else they tell us) can lead to health complications. What do we need for trust to either be present, or to rebuild after it’s faded? For some of us, it would be as simple as having a doctor who talks to us directly. That would be far better than him or her simply inputting data into a laptop and clicking boxes to make a list of our ailments and then hitting the send button to have a prescription slip print out with no medical intervention whatsoever!
