Strain and discard the solids, then chill the tea.

Meanwhile, juice the clementines. When the thyme tea is chilled, mix with the clementine juice and pour into chilled martini glasses. Garnish glasses with clementine peels and thyme sprigs. Suggested spirit: This tastes great with a splash of vodka.

WINTER “SANGRIA” Ingredients 1 qt. pomegranate-juice blend, such as pomegranate-cranberry 2 cups elderberry juice 2 cinnamon sticks 1 lemon, thinly sliced 1 lime, thinly sliced 1 ripe pear, peeled, seeded, and diced 1 Granny Smith apple, seeded and diced 1 cup red grapes, cut in half 4 cups sparkling water

Directions In a large pitcher, mix pomegranate and elderberry juices; add cinnamon sticks and fruits. Cover and steep for at least a few hours, preferably overnight.

Serve in wine glasses, distributing the fruit among them and adding sparkling water for a little fizz.

Suggested spirit: Top off with a bit of brandy.

Protect yourself from financial predators

An estimated one in 10 older adults will be impacted by fraud. With seniors more isolated than ever due to the pandemic, and stimulus checks being sent to millions of Americans nationwide, experts suggest that seniors and their families be extra vigilant.

Compounding the risks associated with isolation, is the number of seniors who feel their chances of falling victim to a financial scam is unlikely. According to a recent study conducted, 69 percent of all seniors age 60 and above believe they’re not likely to be susceptible to a financial scam, despite nearly all seniors (97 percent) acknowledging that older people are very or somewhat susceptible to becoming a victim. When asked about their peers, the poll found that 47 percent of all seniors knew someone who had already fallen victim to a scam.

To better protect yourself from financial fraud and abuse, consider these tips from Wells Fargo:

Don’t wait for a crisis Seniors should speak with trustworthy family members about financial plans, as well as consult them when something doesn’t feel right.

Stay up-to-date Seniors and families should draft and periodically update legal documents such as wills, healthcare directives and powers of attorney.

Prioritize security Seniors should keep checks and credit cards locked away, and update passwords regularly. They should also review credit reports, statements and bills for unusual charges.

Be aware Families can help seniors stay aware of common scams and identify such red flags as: • “Emergency situations” involving family members, often grandchildren, requiring immediate payment.

• Lottery winnings requiring upfront cash payment for taxes and other fees.

• Phone calls from alleged government agencies.

INGREDIENTS

1 c. sugar (less for a sweet wine, more for a dry wine) 1 1/2 tsp. citric acid 1/4 tsp. matcha (green tea) powder 1 bottle wine 3 c. water DIRECTIONS

Blend sugar, citric acid, and matcha powder into a food processor for 1-2 minutes. Pour mix into large bowl. Add wine and water. Stir well. Freeze for 3 hours before serving.

3-Ingredient Chocolate Mousse

INGREDIENTS

8 oz. bittersweet chocolate (70% cacao or higher), chopped, plus chocolate shavings 30 regular-size marshmallows 2 c. heavy cream DIRECTIONS

In large bowl, combine chocolate, marshmallows and 1/2 cup heavy cream.

Microwave on High 2 minutes; stir until marshmallows are melted and mixture is smooth (if not melted after 2 minutes, microwave in 15-second intervals, stirring in between). Let cool to room temp, about 45 minutes. Once mixture is cool, whip remaining cream in bowl until soft peaks form; transfer 1/2 cup to small bowl for topping. Refrigerate. Stir half of remaining whipped cream into cooled chocolate mixture until fully incorporated, then gently fold in the rest.

Spoon into eight 4-ounce ramekins. Refrigerate until set, at least 2 hours and up to overnight. To serve, top with reserved whipped cream and sprinkle with shaved chocolate, if desired.
