First Man (PG-13) The controversial Neil Armstrong biopic “First Man” does a commendable job of putting the viewer inside the rocket. It also takes a deep dive into the personal life of Armstrong, played stoic and restrained by Ryan Gosling. Armstrong had a rocky road to the moon, from test pilot crashes to personal tragedy, and director Damien Chazelle highlights his perseverance through the perilous space race—lost personnel and failed missions that might have sent less enduring astronauts reeling. The film is certainly worthwhile even if only for the NASA history lessons it imparts. Johnny English Strikes Again (PG) Returning as the titular Johnny English, the surprise spy who’s wholly and perhaps delightfully unaware that he’s ridiculously out of his element, is Rowan Atkinson. A cyberattack has revealed the identities of all the British operatives, so Agent English is called up to investigate and find the cyberbrains behind the attack. The gag is that Johnny English is a rotary phone in a cellular world, and gag after gag after pratfall and awkward situation reminds us of it. You either get Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean) or you don’t. If you do, you’ll like this movie.

Recently 1.6 million veterans were surveyed about our trust in Department of Veterans Affairs health care. A VA press release says that our trust level in VA health care rose 2.4 percent during that period. The trust number now is at 88 percent, with a VA target goal of 90 percent by September 2019. Respondents were also asked to reply on a scale of 1-5 to the following statement: “I trust VA to fulfill our country’s commitment to Veterans.” Per the survey’s goal statement, the VA is hoping to raise that number to 90 percent in one year. If you receive a nonmedical VA benefit or service and you get one of those surveys, fill it out. Be honest. A typical VA survey might get only a 20 percent response rate. If there’s space to leave comments, do that, as well. Right now, they’re listening. Don’t let them set policy or rules (or budget) based on the opinion of only 20 percent of those surveyed. Want to enhance your mental acuity? Get moving and eat your vegetables! A study out of Duke University says you can increase your mental sharpness by walking or riding a stationary bike three times a week for six months and going on the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet. The study concluded that this approach could shave nine years off your brain age. The study looked at seniors who had mild cognitive impairment and assigned them one of four combinations of activities: the walking/bike exercise, a DASH diet or both. A fourth choice was health education alone. The first three months were spent doing exercise under the supervision of the research facility. Later the participants were released to exercise on their own.

Specifically, the seniors were asked to ride a stationary bike or walk for 35 minutes three times a week following a 10-minute warm up. The DASH diet, for those who were assigned, promotes healthy grains, low sodium, reduced dairy and meat—the standard healthy diet for those with high blood pressure. (See MayoClinic.org for more information.) There was no push to intensify the rate of exercise (participants were told to aim for 70 percent maximum heart rate), but the exercise intensified over time as participants became more fit. The results: Those with the best improvements had been assigned the walking/bike exercise as well as the DASH diet. They benefited by being more organized, achieving goals and regulating behavior. Even those who only exercised saw significant improvement. Researchers believe this was because of increased oxygen to the brain. If you want to go on the same program, talk to your doctor and get advice, especially about the intensity rate of exercise. If you’re concerned about your balance on a stationary bike, ask about the benefits of a rowing machine instead.

Even the most seasoned of travellers feel the effects of long haul flights, with many suffering severe jetlag as a result. To combat your fatigue, try some of these tips to cope with long flights. They just might allow you to step off that plane and embrace your new destination with an additional amount of energy and excitement! Reduce Your Flight Layovers In order to get the best out of your travel time, it’s essential to plan your journey well. This means being intentional about what flights you book because you’re going to want to avoid transfers. While it might seem like a good idea to break up your time inside a plane by booking a route that includes plane transfers, the truth of the matter is that a direct flight is always going to be better for you in the long run. You’ll reduce your overall stress and the wear and tear on your body and mind.

Exercise the Day Before The longer you’re sitting in your seat, and the more uncomfortable you get, the more you’ll wish you could just get up and exercise. The day before you leave for your travels, make plans to wear yourself out at the gym, ensuring your legs get the brunt of the workout. Tips for taking care of your aging pooch

As your dog ages, your care must evolve to meet your furry friend’s changing needs, particularly when it comes to mobility, injury-prevention and recovery. The following tips can help keep your aging dog mobile, healthy and happy. Fish oil Originally recommended for treating canine allergies, fish oil is now used to treat numerous conditions, including arthritis and high cholesterol. Consult your veterinarian about the proper dose for your pup. Paw or toe grips As your aging dog’s hips get weaker, the risk of knee, hip or spinal injury increases. Hip dysplasia is particularly common among larger dogs. Using paw or toe grips, such as Dr. Buzby’s ToeGrips, can provide dogs with greater traction, helping them get up off the ground and to slide less on wood floors.
