Have you considered the benefits of not living alone?

There are things to be said for taking on a roommate when you’re a single senior.

The way to start thinking about this is to ask yourself if you have room for someone else, or if you’d need to move in with a roommate. At the very least, you’ll need a bedroom and private bath for each person.

Your next step will be to seek out others who are in a shared accommodation situation and ask a lot of questions. You might discover that you’re a good candidate for a successful sharing: • Are you flexible and social, and don’t have a strong need for lots of privacy?

Topping the list of positives is that expenses can be shared, which means you could end up in a home and neighborhood that is nicer than the one you can afford on your own—or that you can keep your own home and not need to downsize.

• Do you like being around other people much of the time? Are you able to set clear expectations?

Duties around the house can be shared, making the load lighter on everyone. In addition, you can count on there being someone there when you come home. Plus, you’ll always have someone to go with you to events. Socially, you might even double the size of your network. Your roommate will be there to walk and feed your dog if you go away.

If you fall or are ill, someone else is nearby to get help.

Go online to search for information on seniors sharing housing. Do a lot of reading, check local resources for more information and decide if shared accommodation is something you want to consider.

Here’s another big thing to keep in mind. It’s generally thought that those who live with others live longer and are generally healthier and happier.

A quick look at the origins of the holiday

The Hanukkah celebration revolves around the kindling of a nine-branched menorah, known in Hebrew as the hanukkiyah. On each of the holiday’s eight nights, another candle is added to the menorah after sundown; the ninth candle, called the shammash (“helper”), is used to light the others. Jews typically recite blessings during this ritual and display the menorah prominently in a window as a reminder to others of the miracle that inspired the holiday.

In another allusion to the Hanukkah miracle, traditional Hanukkah foods are fried in oil. Potato pancakes (known as latkes) and jam-filled donuts (sufganiyot) are particularly popular in many Jewish homes. Other customs include playing with four-sided spinning tops called dreidels and exchanging gifts. In recent decades in North America, Hanukkah has exploded into a major commercial phenomenon, largely because it falls near or overlaps with Christmas. From a religious perspective, however, it remains a relatively minor holiday that places no restrictions on working, attending school or other activities.

Tips for lifting your spirits

Feeling leery about the upcoming holidays? If so, you’re not alone.

Many seniors feel the pressures of lack of money at this time of year, or the even bigger burden of loneliness because family has moved away and friends have passed away.

While there are no fixes for these situations, there are some steps you can take to feel better and maybe even still enjoy the holidays. Make an intentional effort to improve your holiday with some of these ideas.

• Grab the newspaper, a piece of paper and a pen.

Make a list of all the free events in your area and plan to attend at least some of them.

• Call the volunteer services at the hospital and sign up to work certain holidays so that employees can

take a day off. You could man the front desk, push the magazine and book cart or deliver packages to patients.

• Check senior centers to see what events they might be hosting. Ask if they’re joining with the community children’s fund and will be wrapping presents. If they’re planning a bus trip to a big city to see plays or do sightseeing, chances are the costs will be affordable at group pricing.

• Check out a tall stack of books from the library for your at-home days.

You might discover a new author you like. While you’re at the library, offer to sign up for book shelving if others aren’t available on their regular schedule.

• Find out if any of the local churches will be hosting free holiday dinners. And if they are, seriously consider going! Call to ask if they need help setting up beforehand.

While nothing can take the place of having family and friends with you over the holidays, alternating busy days with relaxing ones at home can help make the holidays less stressful.

INGREDIENTS 12 oz. semisweet chocolate, chopped 12 oz. white chocolate, chopped 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract 8 candy canes, crushed

INGREDIENTS 10 mini candy canes 10 marshmallows 1 1/2 c. chocolate chips, melted 5 mini candy canes, crushed Hot chocolate, for serving GET INGREDIENTS Powered by Chicory

DIRECTIONS Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Fill the bottom of a large pot with 3” water and bring to simmer over medium heat. Reduce heat to low, then place a large heatproof bowl on top. Add semi-sweet chocolate and stir occasionally until chocolate has melted. Stir in extract.

Pour into prepared baking sheet and spread into an even layer with an offset spatula. Refrigerate until set, about 20 minutes.

DIRECTIONS Line a small baking tray with parchment paper.

Stick straight side of candy canes into the center of marshmallows.Dip marshmallows into melted chocolate and sprinkle with crushed candy canes. Place on prepared baking sheet and place into refrigerator to harden, about 10 minutes. Serve with hot chocolate.

Over the same pot of barely simmering water, place another large heatproof bowl. Add white chocolate and stir until melted. Pour over set semi-sweet chocolate then top immediately with candy canes. Refrigerate until set, about 20 minutes.

(8-oz.) block cream cheese, softened 1 c. granulated sugar 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract 1/4 tsp. salt Black decorating gel Mini M&Ms DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350° and line two muffin tins with cupcake liners. Make cupcake batter according to package instructions and fill liners 3/4 full with batter. Bake until a toothpick inserted in middle comes out clean, 18 minutes. Let cool completely.

Make cream cheese frosting: In a large bowl, beat heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Set aside. In another bowl, beat together cream cheese, sugar, vanilla, and salt until light and fluffy. Gently fold in whipped cream. Transfer to piping bag or large Ziploc bag.

Frost cupcakes, making sure they are a good height. Trace a black line around frosting with decorating gel. Stick M&Ms along the black line, imitating rainbow lights.

THE NEWS ON SOCIAL SECURITY ISN’T GREAT

It’s now official: the Social Security increase for 2020 will be 1.6%, or $23.40 for the average senior who receives benefits. If our Medicare goes up, that comes out of the increase.

We all know the Social Security increases are not enough to keep pace with rising prices.

The Senior Citizens League did a study a few years ago that determined seniors had fallen 4% behind actual costs in one year alone.

Since 2000 seniors have lost 34% of their buying power. For example, if you bought $100 in groceries back then, today you’d get only $66 worth.

Just what determines the amount of Social Security increases? The number is called COLA, for cost-

of-living adjustment, and the figures are calculated monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers.

The BLS uses the prices in “A Basket of Goods” to calculate what is being spent and determine the Consumer Price Index. It includes food, but also tracks bedroom furniture, toys, the cost of education and communication.

The CPI that came out in September says that over the past year, overall prices for urban consumers went up 1.7 percent.

Here’s some math homework for you for the next year. Make a list of the basic items you buy and the expenses you have.

Write down what they cost. A year from now do a comparison and see if they’ve gone up, and if so, how much.

What you’ll most likely find is that it’s getting harder than ever to live solely on social security, and there doesn’t appear to be relief on the way, so it’s more important than ever to maximize your resources.

But as parents age, sometimes the roles are reversed. Establishing a plan will help everyone feel more at ease about the years ahead.

Here are four common concerns you may face with aging parents and tips to manage each conversation.

Plan Living Arrangements Multi-level homes and complicated floor plans can make everyday living difficult and dangerous for seniors.

Suggest the transition early, while parents are still active to help them ease into the idea. If they insist on staying put, consider homecare and installing assistive equipment, like handrails.

DIRECTIONS 1. In a blender, combine vodka, champagne, blue curaรงao, lemonade, and ice. Blend until combined.

2. Run a lemon wedge around the rim of each glass then dip in sanding sugar.

3. Pour frosties into rimmed glasses and serve immediately.

INGREDIENTS 2 Granny Smith apples, chopped 1 c. whole fresh cranberries 1 c. green grapes, halved 1 c. pomegranate seeds 1 c. sparkling grape juice 1 (750-ml.) bottle champagne, Prosecco, or Cava

INGREDIENTS 1/2 c. semisweet chocolate chips, melted 1/4 c. crushed candy canes 6 oz. white chocolate liqueur 4 oz. vodka 2 oz. peppermint schnapps 2 tbsp. heavy cream Ice 3 small candy canes DIRECTIONS 1. Pour melted chocolate onto a shallow plate, and place crushed candy canes on another shallow plate. Dip rims of martini glasses first in chocolate, then in candy canes. Pour remaining chocolate into the bottom of glasses and swirl to coat the bottom of glasses with chocolate. Place glasses in freezer while you prepare the drink.

2. Combine white chocolate liqueur, vodka, peppermint schnapps, and heavy cream in a cocktail shaker. Fill to the top with ice and shake until cold. Divide drink between 3 glasses and garnish with a candy cane before serving.

INGREDIENTS 1 (14-oz.) can unsweetened coconut milk 12 oz. silver tequila 8 oz. triple sec 1/2 c. lime juice 2 c. ice 1 lime, sliced into rounds for garnish Lime wedge, for rimming glass Sanding sugar, for rimming glass Cranberries, for garnish DIRECTIONS 1. Combine coconut milk, tequila, triple sec, lime juice and ice in a blender. Blend until smooth.

2. Rim glasses with lime wedge and dip in sanding sugar. Pour into glass and garnish with lime and cranberries. Serve.

INGREDIENTS 4 c. cran-apple Juice 2 (750-ml.) bottles red Moscato 1 (750-ml.) bottle Prosecco 1/2 c. vodka 2 c. frozen cranberries 1/3 c. mint leaves 1/2 c. granulated sugar, for rimming glasses 2 limes, sliced into rounds DIRECTIONS 1. Using a wedge of lime, wet rim of glasses. Dip in sugar until coated.

Don’t fall for giving away your DNA or Medicare number

Scammers will exploit every possible opportunity to commit fraud against seniors. This time they’re going after our DNA.

If Medicare turns down the request for payment, you could be liable for the full amount.

Beware of being approached by anyone when you’re out and about. The DNA scammers approach seniors at fairs, the farmers market, by phone, in a parking lot, at aging conferences, health fairs or even at events set up by their community or church. (One group thought they were getting free ice cream to listen to a presentation.)

If someone approaches you about these “free” DNA tests, say “no.” If you receive a test in the mail anyway, do not open it.

The newest fraud involves billing Medicare for special testing that your doctors haven’t asked for. As is typical, they go for your vulnerabilities.

These scammers claim they have tests for Parkinson’s, cancer, dementia, hereditary cancer and more. All you have to do to guard your health is to agree to these “free” tests and submit to a cheek swab right on the spot, or they’ll send you a kit in the mail or come to your home. All they need in order to get you the results, they say, is your Medicare information.

That’s what they really want, your Medicare number, so they can submit a claim for the tests, some costing $9,000 to $11,000 each.

Go online to oig.hhs.gov/fraud/hotline and tell them about the test. Or you can call 1-800-447-8477, which is the hotline for the Department of Health and Human Services. You also can call Medicare, your local police and the state attorney general.

Never give anyone your Medicare number or personal information unless it’s your regular doctor. Besides the phony DNA tests, you could become a victim of other kinds of fraud. When in doubt, play it safe and keep your personal information to yourself.

Along with a couple of high school archetypes, Dora and cousin Diego are whisked back to the bush by some jungle bad guys. They’ll need to escape and find her parents to save the day. It must have been difficult to retain the exuberant innocence of the cartoon and resist the urge to stray into sarcasm.

After all, Dora is in high school. But Moner carries the torch beautifully, taking the best from the wholesome child explorer and weaving her into a fish out of water adventure-nerd, all the while serving self-aware inside jokes wrapped in a can-do attitude.

DECLUTTER LIFE These tasks will help keep your house clean this holiday season.

Once a Day

Sort the mail. It’s easy to let it pile up,

and that’s how important bills, cards, and invitations get lost in the shuffle. Plus, it’s always less painful to go through a daily pile than to do a weekly sweep.

Clear off the coffee table. When it’s

free of clutter, you’ll be able to enjoy movie night (and just Tuesday night) even more.

Clear off the countertop. Not only will

you love the look, but putting together your next meal will also be a total breeze because the first step won’t involve finding homes for loose mail and your garlic press.

Wipe down the sink hardware. A sparkling faucet has the magical ability to make the rest of the bathroom appear bright and clean too.

Put toys back in their bins. Middle-ofthe-night check-ins can become downright dangerous when Legos are dotting the floor.

Put things away. Take five minutes at the end of each day to clear out items that don’t belong in the rooms you use daily. Laptops, homework, and school projects all get the boot back to their proper homes.

Make your bed. It’s the easiest way

to feel put together in the a.m., and some research has shown that people who make their beds may be happier than those who let the sheets lie where they may.

Once a month

Take an hour or two to tidy up your closet and edit out pieces you no longer need. Then donate them or resell the good stuff.

Give your desk drawer a once-over and bring the hair ties upstairs to the bathroom, put the paper clips back in their proper slot, and toss anything you realistically won’t use, such as expired coupons and extra buttons. Move older files to a box in a cabinet or closet.

Can cats learn to love a new puppy addition?

Q: My two cats do not like my new puppy at all. Every time “Sparks” tries to approach one of them, they hiss and swipe at his nose. I’m afraid this is traumatic for him.

How can I get them to get along?

A: This new family can get along, but it will take a bit of work and careful arrangements. “Gradual” is the watchword here. Sparks needs to be introduced in controlled situations and taken away if the cats begin to hiss or arch their backs. Your puppy should not be left alone in a room with the cats; you need to monitor all the pets’ behavior and remove Sparks if the cats prepare to show aggression. Put up a baby gate. Keep Sparks out of rooms where the cats are, at least for now. Give the cats an out. They will be less aggressive if they don’t feel that they’re being cornered by an overly friendly puppy. Reduce antagonistic choke points in the house. Note areas where the cats and dog may cross paths and reduce the possibility that they will.

Separate out their food bowls. Lastly, be patient!
