CHOOSE THE RIGHT GOLF BALLS Here’s what to look for
There is nothing worse for golfers than wasting a good swing. Maybe it was a perfect drive on the range right before tee off. Or maybe, you wasted a good swing because your golf ball was a piece of junk altogether. More often than not, the biggest mistake player’s make is they use the wrong type of ball. If the golf ball does not suit the player or the circumstance, then the overall outcome of the shot will be adversely affected.
If so, choose a balata. This is a softer ball, and allows for more spin. If you are a higher handicap, you need more distance and durability. This is where a good twopiece ball will be best. This ball has a harder cover and less backspin, which allows you to hit it farther. What are the elements doing? It’s important to look at things like the weather and the course conditions when choosing a ball. If the course has been deluged with rain, then you will need a ball that will travel farther and produces less spin. If you are playing on a rock hard, sun-scorched track, choose something softer that will land soft and spin.
Basically, there are two things to consider when choosing the correct ball:
Remember, you can cut off a few strokes per round by doing nothing more than choosing the correct ball. It’s a good idea to keep a few of each in your bag and practice with them. Learn how they feel. See how you like them.

August 11, 1973 “American Graffiti,” a nostalgic comingof-age tale set in the car-centric culture of suburban California, is released in theaters across the U.S. August 16, 1896 While salmon fishing near the Klondike River, George Carmack reportedly spots nuggets of gold in a creek bed, sparking the last great gold rush in the American West. August 17, 1969 The grooviest event in music history—the Woodstock Music Festival—draws to a close after three days of peace, love and rock ‘n’ roll in upstate New York.

August 17, 1978 The Double Eagle II completes the first transatlantic balloon flight by landing near Paris, France, 137 hours after lifting off from Preque Isle, Maine. The heliumfilled balloon was piloted by three: Ben Abruzzo, Maxie Anderson and Larry Newman. August 18, 1227 Genghis Khan, the Mongol leader who forged an empire stretching from the east coast of China west to the Aral Sea, dies in camp during a campaign against the Chinese kingdom of Xi Xia. The great Khan, who was over 60 and in failing health, may have succumbed to injuries from a horse fall. August 20, 1920 Seven men, including legendary all-around athlete and football star Jim Thorpe, meet to organize a professional football league at the Jordan and Hupmobile Auto Showroom in Canton, Ohio. The meeting would lead to the creation of the American Professional Football Conference (APFC), the forerunner to the hugely successful National Football League. August 21, 2004 American swimmer Michael Phelps wins his eighth medal of the 2004 Athens Olympics.

HERE’S A TIP TIP 1 On a road trip, put items you’ll need along the way into a laundry basket that can be easily accessed during your trip. VETERANS POST Often thieves are not that bright. They don’t count on the VAOIG—the Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General— to catch them, which usually happens. In Florida, a veteran was indicted on grounds of theft after claiming benefits for 100 percent disability for blindness. He’d collected those benefits for 16 years. He got caught because he had a driver’s license and was recorded doing yard work, washing his vehicle and driving. He could get up to 10 years in the federal pen for stealing over a halfmillion dollars in benefits. In Kansas, a scammer (also a veteran, unfortunately) claimed severe vision problems and collected benefits. He also drove to and from his medical appointments, with his wife switching seats with him a few blocks from the hospital. In Missouri, a salesman submitted over $600,000 in phony invoices to a Department of Veterans Affairs medical facility for tools and other commercial products.
