Laurel and Hardy ruled movie theaters as one of the top comedy teams from 1921-1951. If you don’t know who they are, you’ll be able to discover them in the upcoming British film “Stan & Ollie,” which will star Englishman Steve Coogan.

Also in the works is an upcoming English TV movie about the supposedly infamous time that Elizabeth Taylor (Stockard Channing), Marlon Brando (Brian Cox) and Michael Jackson (Joseph Finnes) rented a car after 9/11 to drive to Los Angeles because the airports were closed. The trio got as far as Ohio and flew the rest of the way.

Since all three stars are gone, who knows what happened during that car trip? Imagine seeing Liz, Marlon and Jacko at a greasy spoon drinking “joe!”

Losing someone you love can happen at any moment. People expected to pass from a horrific disease may far outlive their projected date of departure.

Someone who seems perfectly healthy can pass in their sleep. The person you’ve loved your entire life may decide they no longer love you.

The reality is that all of us have experienced some sort of grief in our lives, but knowing the research behind how the brain processes grief may make you feel less out of control.

• D epression: “I’m too sad to do anything.”

• A cceptance: “I’m at peace with what happened.”

If you are experiencing any of these emotions after a loss, it may help to know your reaction is natural and you’ll heal in time.

Not everyone who grieves goes through all of these stages—and that’s okay. Contrary to

popular belief, you do not have to go through each stage in order to heal.

Some people resolve

their grief without going through any of these stages. And if you do go through these stages, you probably won’t experience them in a

neat, sequential order, so don’t worry about what you “should” be feeling or which stage you’re supposed to be in.

Kübler-Ross herself before her death said, “They (five stages) were never meant to help tuck messy emotions into neat packages. They are responses to loss that many people have, but there is not a typical response to loss. Our grieving is as individual as our lives.”

The 5 Stages of Grief In 1969, psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross introduced what became known as the “5 Stages of Grief.” These stages of grief were based on her studies of the feelings of patients facing terminal illness, but many people have generalized them to other types of negative life changes and losses, such as the death of a loved one or a break-up.

Financial stress can send us on an emotional rollercoaster that makes even the most even-keeled and happy of us feel distressed. As adults we are expected to somehow know how to handle money, yet few of us have been properly taught how to manage it correctly.

How you feel about money comes largely from your childhood experiences— baggage you have accumulated, and skills and habits (both good and bad) that you’ve picked up along the way. While many financial problems are outside our control, you’ll feel more in control if you can identify your self-defeating spending habits and find a way to stop them. 1. Burying your head in the sand Do you avoid thinking about money? Do you let bills pile up, engage in reckless shopping when you know

you don’t have the funds or avoid looking at bank statements because you’re in denial?

2. Filling the hole Some people spend compulsively as a way to fill a void. That void could be caused by anything from a bad day to a bad marriage. If you indulge in this kind of spending, you’ll quickly learn that the hole can never be filled with anything you can buy.

3. Penny-pinching Being thrifty is usually a virtue, but it can become a pathology when you have such a fear of losing money that you hold onto every penny, putting unnecessary stress on your own life and those around you. Sometimes it makes sense to buy new clothes or new furniture. You only live once; it’s okay to treat yourself to a few beautiful new things.

4. Digging the hole deeper Let’s say you know your expenses have already exceeded your income for the month. If you are the kind of person who thinks in extremes, you might say, “Well hey, in that case, why not just go all out and blow the rest on a cruise to the Bahamas!” Turns out, it’s not such a good idea.

How to engage positively to defuse a potentially explosive situation.

Regardless of where you spend your time, you’re bound to find yourself faced with a cranky person.

Here are some ways you can keep them from ruining your mood.

1. Use a kind (or neutral) tone.

It’s tempting to respond the way you’ve been spoken to, but that will only make an unpleasant interaction worse.

Keep in mind that you’re encountering someone at his or her worst (perhaps in the middle of a bad day, during a period of low blood sugar, etc.) and pause before you respond. Remind yourself to use a kind or neutral tone.

2. Try reversing your reaction.

If you want to yell, speak softly. Responding the opposite way from how you want to react can lead to a much more positive interaction—and it’s another great way to help you keep your cool.

3. Don’t take it (too) personally.

If someone snaps at you, it can feel as if you’re somehow the cause of this change in mood.

Crankiness is often a result of something going on internally or something unrelated to the current interaction. Consider how you feel when you’re cranky.

Usually it has little to do with the other person, right?

4. Break it up with a time out.

The last thing a cranky person wants to hear is: “Are you okay? Why are you in a bad mood?” Questions like these are rarely answered honestly and often irritate those feeling cranky.

Instead of peppering someone with questions, step back and do something different.

5. Create a crankiness code word.

To communicate quickly about crankiness (without having to ask questions), create a simple one-word signal to say, “Hey, you’re being a bit cranky now so I’m going to give you your space.”

Although you might like to, you’ll never be able to completely avoid the crankiness of others, but with these tips you’ll be able to better cope when the moods of others go from good to grouchy.

More than half (59 percent) of Americans expect to still be living at home independently at the age of 80, according to a recent survey by the American Physical Therapy Association. The same study showed that at least half of the same group realizes they will experience a decline in their strength and flexibility as they age.

Physical therapists and movement experts can help you overcome pain, gain and maintain movement, and preserve independence—often helping to avoid the need for surgery or longterm use of prescription drugs.

The American Physical Therapy Association says these tips are key to helping you age well.

1. Chronic pain doesn’t have to be the boss of you.

Proper exercise, mobility and pain management techniques can ease pain and improve your overall quality of life.

2. You can get better and stronger at any age.

Research shows that an exercise program can improve your muscle strength and flexibility as you age.

3. You may not need surgery or drugs for your low back pain.

Low back pain is often over-treated with surgery and drugs despite a wealth of scientific evidence demonstrating that physical therapy can be an effective alternative with less risk.

4. Exercise can help you avoid falls and keep your independence.

More than half of adults over the age of 65 report problems with movement.
