Ideas to get your body moving

If you’ve pretty much been planted on the couch this summer, here’s how to start exercising and establish a fitness routine you’ll actually stick with.

Take some selfies To accurately track your progress, it’s helpful to identify a starting point and then define your goal. Throw on a sports bra and shorts or a bathing suit and take a video with your smart phone to capture your body from all angles. Do this every two to four weeks to track progress.

Start small So, you haven’t lifted a weight since Cactus League started, give yourself a break. The first week you’re easing back into exercising, start small. Know that any movement is good movement. Commit to doing 10 minutes of an exercise video or walking for exercise three days this week.

Journal Write down five ways you are going to be healthy today. Your daily success list could include things like not drinking soda, eating more vegetables, doing 30 minutes of walking today, taking the stairs in your office once a day, and drinking more water. Keep your goals small and achievable to celebrate daily victories.

Overcome your fear of the gym The gym can be an intimidating place for many of us.

If you’re overweight, obese or just plain inexperienced, you might be afraid that people are staring or judging you. The reality is, most of the time, everyone at the gym is focusing on themselves.

Expect to fail You’re going to make mistakes and stumble along the way. There will be times when life will get crazy and you’ll temporarily be derailed. The difference between failing on a diet or fitness routine and succeeding is that you pick yourself up from the fall and keep going.

Signs they may need more help

When seniors struggle with basic tasks such as selfcare, transportation or household chores, they don’t always talk about it. They may be embarrassed or afraid of losing their independence.

Still others may not even realize anything is amiss, particularly if they’re in the beginning stages of dementia.

Here are some warning signs that a loved one may be in need of care: • A change in mood, such as depression, anxiety or a loss of interest in socializing and hobbies.

BUCKET LIST A Journey I’ll Never Forget

As a child I grew up on a farm and was active in rodeos and fairs around New Mexico. As long as I can remember, I have always wanted to travel to The Calgary Stampede. This summer, I had the opportunity to complete one of my bucket list items while my husband, Bob, and I traveled to see Calgary and the Canadian Rockies.

DO YOU KNOW? The Calgary Stampede is an annual rodeo, exhibition, and festival held every July in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The 10-day event, which bills itself as “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth,” attracts over one million visitors per year.

The Calgary Stampede did not disappoint! The shows were captivating, the rodeo was thrilling, the exhibits were inspiring, and the midway was exhilarating—there’s a reason they call the Stampede “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.”

During the Stampede, Bob and I ran into our old friends Jack Jackson and Armond performing at a breakfast event—Jack has performed in the Sun Cities many times throughout the years.

To say this was a trip of a lifetime would be an understatement!

If you’ve ever thought of going to The Calgary Stampede, I’d encourage you to start making your travel plans now, because it sells out! Next year, The Calgary Stampede will be held July 3-12, 2020.
