Tips for boosting vitality begin at the kitchen table!

It’s true that aging involves physical changes, but it doesn’t have to mean discomfort and disability.

While not all illness or pain is avoidable, many of the physical challenges associated with aging can be overcome or drastically mitigated by eating right, exercising and taking care of yourself.

It’s never too late to start! No matter how old you are or how unhealthy you’ve been, caring for your body has enormous benefits in keeping you active, sharpening your memory, boosting your immune system, managing health problems and increasing your energy.

Tips for eating well. As you age, your relationship to food may change. A decreased metabolism, changes in taste and smell, and slower digestion may affect your appetite, the foods you can eat, and how your body processes food.

The key is to adapt your food choices to your changing needs.

Load up on high-fiber fruits, vegetables and whole grains. As you age, your digestive system slows down, so fiber is very important. Consume fiber-rich whole grains, fruit and vegetables to feel more energetic.

Put effort into making your food look and taste good. Your taste buds may not be as strong and your appetite may have shrunk, but your nutritional needs are as important as ever. If you don’t enjoy eating like you used to, put a little more effort into your meals, including the way you flavor, prepare and present them.

Watch out for dehydration. Because of physical changes, older adults are more prone to dehydration. Make sure you drink plenty of fluid—even if you don’t feel thirsty. Dehydration will cause you to lose your mental edge and can lead to fatigue.

Make meals a social event. If you live alone, invite other people over. It’s a great way to stay in touch with friends, and you can share cooking and clean up duties.

is that close to 15 percent of people with lung cancer have never smoked. Many factors contribute to a lung cancer diagnosis, including the environment, family history and genetic makeup.

There are many misconceptions about the deadliest form of cancer.

Myth #2: Genetics has nothing to do with lung cancer. Genetics plays an important role in lung cancer development. About 28 percent of Americans recognize changes in genetic makeup as a cause of lung cancer, but genetic mutations are closely linked to the most common form of lung cancer, known as non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

The 2014 Any One Any Lung Survey uncovered a significant lack of understanding about lung cancer.

The survey found 84 percent of the general public feel they know little or nothing about lung cancer— which claims more lives than prostate, colon, breast and pancreatic cancer combined.

“It’s really important that people realize lung cancer can affect anyone,” says lung cancer survivor Richard Heimler.

His diagnosis came as a shock not only because he was only 44 years old at the time, but also because he had never smoked. Lung cancer is more complex than most people think. Here are three common myths.

Myth #1: Smoking causes lung cancer. Smoking is a risk factor, but not the only one. Nearly 75 percent of Americans immediately think smoking is the cause when they hear someone has lung cancer. The truth

Myth #3: All lung cancer treatments are similar. Today’s treatments vary greatly. New technologies look at a patient’s tumor cells on the molecular level to help doctors develop individualized treatment plans known as precision oncology. This approach provides patients with the best treatments for their type of lung cancer while avoiding treatments that won’t be effective.

Tips to help you avoiding being a victim of lottery scams.

When you get a letter, email or text message informing you that you’ve just won the lottery and all you have to do is pay the processing fees or taxes and provide proof of your identity, it sounds too good to be true...because it is. Thousands fall victim to such scams, and crooks are constantly working on new ways to trick people just like you.

Don’t be the next victim.

Never divulge your personal information. If the correspondence asks for personal information, this should be your first clue that it might be a scam. Never provide your personal and banking information to people you don’t know.

Consider the professionalism of the letter. Many scammers give themselves away with the nature of the language. If the message is poorly written, contains typos or sentences that lack professionalism, it’s probably a scam.

Check the rules of the lottery. Many scams can be spotted immediately because they don’t clearly disclose the terms and conditions, including the rules and how to claim your winnings. You’ll never have to pay money in advance if you’ve won a legitimate lottery. If you received a check with the lottery letter and deposited it into your bank account, never send funds from the deposited check until it officially clears. This can take weeks. Under Federal Law, financial institutions have to make the funds available to account holders within days. Consider this: How you can win a real lottery that you didn’t even enter?

SUPER SPRING SALADS

They can be so much more than just a plain, boring, healthy meal!

These days, everyone is putting a twist on salads.

There are many ways to incorporate the numerous spring vegetables into a “super” salad by adding a combination of flavorful ingredients and simple preparation methods. Here are a few tips: Make it colorful! Skip the iceberg and opt for spinach or another dark leafy green. Dark leafy greens supply a tremendous amount of nutrients, including vitamins A, C and K, iron, calcium and fiber. Add in some carrots, red bell peppers, tomatoes, blanched asparagus, beets or any other vegetable to add color, and you’ll get additional nutrients critical for maintaining eyesight, bone health and digestive health.

Salad isn’t just for vegetables anymore! Try adding apples, citrus segments, grapes, strawberries or blueberries to your plate of colorful vegetables. Just

like many vegetables, fruits contain antioxidants that can help protect against certain forms of cancer as well as reduce levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol. Try to avoid or limit the amount of dried fruits you add to your salad, such as dried cranberries or blueberries.

These often have added sugars that can up the calorie content of your meal.

Add a healthy crunch! A few toasted walnuts or almonds, spicy baked garbanzo beans and quick pickled vegetables are a great addition to any salad.

Add some protein! Protein takes longer to digest, so it keeps us full longer. Protein also is needed for healthy muscles. Eggs, lean meat, beans and cheese (in limited quantities) are easy ways to add protein.

Find a healthier dressing! There now are quite a variety of light dressings and vinaigrettes to choose from. Vinegar-based dressings typically have less fat and calories than creamy dressings. Oil and vinegar is a healthy choice in limited amounts—the healthy fat from the oil helps your body to absorb some of the vitamins from the salad. Find one of these dressings that works for you.
