Big events that occurred during the month of April

April 9, 1962 President John F. Kennedy throws out the ceremonial first pitch in Washington D.C.’s new stadium, called simply “D.C. Stadium.”

He continued a tradition that began in 1910 when President William Taft threw out Major League Baseball’s first openingday pitch in old Griffith Stadium.

April 10, 1866 The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is founded in New York by philanthropist and diplomat Henry Bergh after he witnessed and later wrote about work horses beaten by their peasant drivers in Russia.

April 13, 1360 A hailstorm kills an estimated 1,000 of King Edward’s III’s English soldiers in France. The heavy losses were seen as a sign from God, convincing King Edward to negotiate peace with the French.

April 14, 1986 The U.S. launches airstrikes against Libya in retaliation for its sponsorship of terrorism against American troops and citizens. The attacks were mounted

by Navy attack jets in the Mediterranean and Air Force bombers from bases in England. France

April 15, 1865 President Abraham Lincoln dies from an assassin’s bullet. Shot

Give yourself the gift of forgiveness

Although forgiveness brings many benefits, particularly to the “forgiver,” to forgive is not always easy. While everyone may have a unique perspective on how to forgive, the following strategies have been proven effective for many people.

Express yourself When trying to decide how to forgive someone, it may or may not help to express your feelings to the other person.

If the relationship is important and you would like to maintain it, it may be very useful for you to tell the other person—in non-threatening language—how their actions affected you. If the person is no longer in your life, or if you have reason to believe that things will get much worse if you address the situation directly, you may want to just write a letter and tear it up (or burn it) and move on.

Research has shown that empathy, particularly with men, is associated with forgiveness, and can make the process easier. Instead of seeing them as “the enemy,” try to understand the factors that they were dealing with.

Get help Sometimes it can be difficult to forget about the past and forgive, particularly if the offending acts were traumatic. If you’re still having difficulty knowing how to forgive someone who’s wronged you in a significant way, you may have better success working with a therapist who can help you work through your feelings on a deeper level and personally support you through the process.

This recipe is perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner with a salad or steamed green vegetables. The quinoa and brown rice can be made ahead of time and refrigerated.

INGREDIENTS • 1 tablespoon canola oil • 1 medium-sized yellow onion, chopped • 4 garlic cloves, peeled and minced • 1 cup cooked quinoa • 1 cup cooked brown rice • 1 cup black beans, rinsed and drained • ½ cup water or low-sodium chicken, beef or vegetable broth • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper • 1 teaspoon chili powder • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • ½ cup frozen corn or no-salt added canned corn • 10 whole-wheat tortillas • 1 (16 ounce) jar of mild, chunky salsa • ½ cup shredded low-fat cheddar cheese, optional • ¼ cup sliced green or black olives, optional INSTRUCTIONS 1. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat.

2. Add the quinoa, brown rice, black beans and water or broth. Season mixture with the pepper, chili powder and the cumin. Turn the heat to high and cook, stirring occasionally, until mixture begins to boil. Add the corn, cover and reduce heat to low; simmer, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes.

3. Wrap tortillas in food-safe paper towels. Sprinkle paper towels with water on both sides. Heat the tortillas the microwave for 30 seconds, or until THIN CRUST inPIZZA warm and pliable.

4. Place 2-3 heaping tablespoons of filling in the center of each tortilla. Top with salsa. Fold the tortilla in half and serve immediately.

One simply can not overestimate the importance of getting a good night’s sleep. But sometimes that’s easier said than done. If you’re struggling to catch some quality shut eye, here are some ideas that just might transform your life by improving your ability to get quality rest.

4. Still having trouble sleeping? Here’s a breathing trick you can try. Touch your tongue to a spot directly behind your top front teeth, then breathe in through your nose for four seconds. Then hold your breath for seven seconds and exhale through your mouth for eight seconds. Repeat the whole process three times to fully decompress…if you don’t fall asleep before you reach the end.

1. Right before you go to bed, try taking a hot bath or long shower— the rise and resulting sudden drop in your body temperature will help to make you feel more relaxed—and sleepy.

2. Wear warm socks to bed. When you sleep, your body redirects blood flow to your hands and feet to redistribute heat from your core to your extremities; cold feet can inhibit this blood flow and therefore make it harder for you to maintain a restful sleep. Socks are the fix.

5. If none of these techniques are helping you sleep (and you’ve tried cutting out before-bed caffeine and sugars), then you need to do a little more to set your mind at ease.

Introductory mindfulness techniques, such as focusing in on your breathing or studying an imagined object (with your eyes closed) for five minutes, can allow you to finally slip away from the stresses of daily life and find a more restful sleep.

Insurance experts from Travelers suggest the following tips to help you protect your most treasured possessions: Insure Your Wedding Ring Immediately Wedding rings hold great sentimental and monetary value, but many individuals don’t think to cover them under an insurance policy. Valuable items policies, such as a personal articles floater (PAF), insure individual pieces that have a value that may exceed the limits of your homeowners policy.

Store Your Jewelry in Unlikely Places Burglars often know exactly where to look for jewelry and other valuables. Storing your most prized pieces in uncommon spaces, such as a bookshelf or your bathroom, can add an extra layer of protection.

If your jewelry has a higher value than that, it’s worth considering an additional policy, such as a PAF or the Valuable Items Plus program from Travelers, both of which provide coverage for items of higher value. You can ask your insurance agent or carrier about other policy options, including what their limits are and how to add them to your overall insurance program.

It may be hard to imagine the theft or loss of your most valuable possessions, but these things happen, and that’s why it’s important to take steps to protect your jewelry with customizable insurance options.

Think about your “money rules” Do your spending and savings decisions vary based on the source of income? For example, you might use a work income bonus differently than your regular work pay. If so, how does each decision support your monthly budget needs and long-range financial priorities?

Account for all payment methods Consider checks, cash, credit and debit cards, automatic payroll deposits and deductions, online payments and other payment accounts such as PayPal, Zelle or Venmo. Five steps to forgiving your spouse

If you want to have a healthy relationship, forgiveness in marriage is critical. When your husband forgets to do something you asked or says something in a tone you don’t like, deal with it right then. Tell him how you feel. Online Dating Sites You can’t really know who’s on the other end of the ads you view, but there are some warning signs that a potential date might not be honest. He or she might profess love all too quickly, or send photos that don’t look real. You might be encouraged to delete your profile and instead exchange direct email. Maybe you’ll be told you can’t meet yet because the other person is out of the country, and there are excuses about why you can’t talk on the phone. Eventually there will be an “emergency,” and you’ll be asked to help by sending money...and then more money.

Drug Mules Many seniors have been conned into sneaking drugs into other countries. A new love will ask a senior to travel overseas, even making the arrangements.

Unfortunately, those arrangements include taking along an extra piece of luggage.

It could contain anything, but it’s often drugs. If the senior gets caught, claiming innocence doesn’t help when stuck in a foreign jail.

Financial Assets Co-mingling of assets or accounts is another red flag.

Don’t do it, especially if you intend to leave money to your heirs. The more assets you have, the more you’re at-risk of having your money stolen. Be careful how much financial information you give out about yourself.

Setting up a senior to be scammed doesn’t have to happen overnight. Sometimes the scheme can play out for months while trust is built and information disclosed. If you suspect you’ve been scammed, call the anti-fraud hotline at 1-855-303-9470.

In honor of Earth Day (April 22, 2019), let us consider how being mindful of the three Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) at home can make a difference far beyond it.

What can I reuse? Can you refurbish cabinets instead of getting new ones? Can new paint upgrade a finish? Can old items be used by someone else? Learning to reuse or repurpose is essential for cutting down waste. Not remodeling? Try these basic ideas: • Send gently used books to schools • Donate your older fashion looks to charities • Paint old furniture and repurpose it • Use old spaghetti sauce jars to serve as pots for plants • Use rechargeable batteries

Reduce Stop the clutter, slow down the buying.

Do you need it or just want it? Is there something else that can be used for this purpose? Here are a few things you can do immediately to reduce your consumer footprint.

• Print on both sides of the paper • Pay bills electronically • Remove your name from mailing lists • Read newspapers online • Avoid using disposable items like paper plates, cups and utensils • Avoid buying overpackaged items

Recycle If it cannot be reused, then recycle all materials possible. Glass, wood and cardboard packaging can be recycled, not just thrown away.
