It may be hard to believe, but there is an official competition to see who can sit in a sauna for the longest period of time. The World Sauna Championships have taken place in Heinola, Finland, annually since 1999. The starting temperature is 110 F, and a liter of water is poured on the stove every 30 seconds. The winner is the last person who is able to leave the sauna without assistance. Competitors participate at their own risk, and they are required to sign a waiver agreeing not to take legal action against the event organizers. The importance of kindness
Kindness is defined as the quality of being friendly, generous and considerate. Affection, gentleness, warmth, concern and care are words associated with kindness. While kindness has a connotation of meaning someone is naive or weak, being kind actually requires courage and strength. Forget all you’ve heard about Darwin and his survival of the fittest theory. Science has now shown that devoting resources to others, rather than having more and more for yourself, brings about lasting well-being. Kindness has been found by researchers to be the most important predictor of satisfaction and stability in a marriage. There are different ways to practice kindness. One way to be kind is to open your eyes and be active when you see people in need. Do you notice when people could use a helping hand? A sense of
community is created when people are kind to those who need help. Opening your eyes means noticing when others are suffering. A kind word, a smile, opening a door, or helping carry a heavy load can all be acts of kindness. Celebrating someone you love, giving honest compliments, sending an email thanking someone, telling someone how s/he is special to you, helping an elderly neighbor with yard work or food, taking a photo of someone and sending it to the person, sharing homemade food, refusing to gossip, and donating old clothing and things you don’t need are all ways you can show kindness. Kindness is a willingness to fullheartedly celebrate someone else’s successes. It’s also about telling the truth in a gentle way when doing so is helpful to the other person. The courage to give and receive truthful feedback is a key component of growth and flexible thinking. There are many ways to be kind and many opportunities to practice it. Consider how expressing more kindness could strengthen your relationships.

After my husband, Bob, and I left the Calgary Stampede, we decided to explore the Canadian Rockies. We drove through hundreds of miles of the most beautiful views you’ve ever seen.

Banff is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited! Banff is nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. It is a charming and energetic resort town. You could spend weeks exploring the Banff and Jasper National Parks.

After Bob and I left Banff, we traveled down the Icefields Parkway—a scenic drive that goes between Jasper and Lake Louise passing through the Columbia Icefield and the Athabasca Glacier. While in Jasper, we traveled onto the rugged icefields of an ancient glacier—I have to say, the chance to experience the magnificence of such a powerful force of nature up close was awe inspiring.

We then stopped in the cutest town called Kamloops, evidently it hosts its share of sporting tournaments during the winter, due to its mild weather. After Kamloops, we headed to the busy city of Vancouver—I wasn’t expecting to see such an incredible skyline.

One of our favorite places in British Columbia was Victoria—it was such an incredible place! Bob and I were truly impressed at the ferries that traveled from Vancouver to Victoria. While in Victoria, we visited Butchart Gardens—if you’ve never been, it’s a must see.
