Let’s be honest, do we need a holiday or an observance in order to don our party hats? The overwhelming response from the scientific, religious, medical and spiritual communities is no! Celebrating life on a daily basis is a way to develop an “attitude of gratitude” that can literally transform your outlook and also improve your health and your sleep. Here are some tips from the experts that can help you develop a lasting habit of gratitude. Celebrate your day…before it begins. While your head is still on the pillow, take just a few minutes to identify all the things for which you are grateful, even if it’s just the fact that you are in a warm bed with a roof over your head. Give thanks sincerely and often. Pay attention to the gestures of consideration shown to you throughout the day. Be sure to thank everyone who pays you a kindness. Write letters to people thanking them for what they’ve done for you. Telephone someone and tell them how much you appreciate their influence on your life. Appreciate the “negatives” in your life. Obstacles and challenges teach us resiliency and humility, and they allow us to become more capable of overcoming bigger problems. Instead of losing it over your neighbor’s barking dog, be grateful for the opportunity to practice patience. Keep a journal. Don’t like to write? Do something called the “rampage of appreciation.” Think about all the things for which you’re grateful, open your journal, set a timer for one minute and spray the page with anything and everything that comes to mind. Don’t stop until the timer rings. When it’s over, you’ll be amazed at how many blessings belong to you. Count your blessings before you count sheep. Just as you begin your day as a celebration, end it the same way. By focusing on the good things in your life, you reduce mental stress which contributes to insomnia. What studies are discovering by Matilda Charles
Seniors must be fascinating to researchers because it seems they’re always studying them. Here are a few things they’ve learned through Pew Research Center studies: • With all the drama nowadays about “fake news,” and with senior’s age-enhanced ability to sniff out lies, it would seem that we’d be excellent at discerning what’s real and what isn’t. Not so, according to a study. Five thousand participants of all ages were presented with five factual statements and five opinion statements. Turns out the younger age groups were much better at identifying both the factual and opinion news items than seniors. • Seniors are more likely to be religious, which researchers identified as meaning being part of a religious group, attending weekly services and
praying daily. It’s not just here in America—they got the same results for most of the rest of the world. • When it comes to politics both the baby boomers (born 1946 to 1964) and the Silent Generation (late 1920s to 1945) are more conservative, with the Silents more staunchly conservative than the boomers. • Although more seniors are becoming technologically savvy, seniors are still 42 percent behind other age groups in the percentage of us who have cellphones or roam the Internet. Half of us say we need help setting up new devices, which is where more training classes at senior centers would come in handy. • Those over the age of 50 are divorcing at a rate that has doubled during the past 30 years. INGREDIENTS • ½ cup fat-free sour cream • S ugar substitute to equal ½ cup, suitable for baking • 1 cup mashed ripe bananas • 1 egg or equivalent in egg substitute • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1½ cups reduced-fat biscuit baking mix • ¼ cup chopped walnuts INSTRUCTIONS 1. Heat oven to 350 F. Spray a 9x5-inch loaf pan with butter-flavored cooking spray. In a large bowl, combine sour cream, sugar substitute, mashed bananas, egg and vanilla extract. Add baking mix and walnuts. Mix well to combine. 2. Spread batter into prepared loaf pan. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. The new shingles vaccine can be hard to find
Ninety-nine percent of us over the age of 40 had chickenpox when we were kids. That virus is still in our bodies...and it can reactivate at any time as shingles. Do you know someone who has had shingles? Did their experience make you want to rush to the doctor for the shingles vaccine? If you did get the vaccine years ago, do you feel confident knowing it offers a protection rate of only 50 percent, and only for a few years? Fear not, they say...there’s a new, more effective shingles vaccine, available since 2017. Shingrix offers protection at a 90 percent rate. It’s taken in two doses, two to six months apart.
Unlike the old vaccine, this one will still be at least 85 percent effective four years after you get it. Researchers say one in three will get shingles because our immune systems decline as we age. If you’re over the age of 50, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, you should have the Shingrix vaccine. If you had the old vaccine between the ages of 50 and 59, we might not be covered in later years. Finding the new vaccine, however, might be a problem. It’s easy to find locations that give the shot, but whether they have it on hand is another matter. Start by calling your doctor’s office to see if they have it in stock and if you should have it. (There might be reasons you shouldn’t.) If you need it but the doctor doesn’t have it, put your ZIP code in the search box on vaccinefinder.org and start making calls to local pharmacies. Be sure to specify Shingrix. You might be put on a wait list. And don’t forget your Medicare or insurance card because Shingrix is expensive!

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service sends out email alerts to those who are signed up for warnings about foods and products that are dangerous or contaminated, perhaps with Listeria or salmonella. Are you signed up for these email notices? A recent alert concerned 39 tons of ground turkey products sold in large packages last summer. It’s made a number of people sick, and the USDA has to err on the side of caution, trying to catch any products that people might have in their freezer. Another alert concerns pork sausage, and yet another concerns chicken and rice products. To sign up for these notices in email, go online to www.usda.gov and put “alerts” in the search box. Click on “current recalls and alerts.” You’ll see a popup box where you can enter your email address. While you’re on that page (after the pop-up vanishes) scroll down to review recent recalls and alerts. The Food and Drug Administration covers alerts and recalls for medications and medical supplies, while the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration deals with vehicles, tires, motorcycles and child restraints. If you want to cover all your bases, check recalls.gov/list and sign up for all of them in one place. You’ll receive alerts from U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the FDA and the USDA. To make sure you haven’t missed anything, do a search for your medications and vehicles after you sign up. Another source to watch is Food Safety (www.foodsafety.gov). Besides sending out alert notices, the site has information on how to avoid food poisoning, safe freezer practices, thawing food and more. The Department of Veterans Affairs has released health care inspection reports for 101 of its Community Living Centers, formerly known as nursing homes. Facilities are surveyed in a number of ways, including having enough staff, managing medication, protecting residents from physical and mental abuse and properly storing and preparing food. Of those, staffing might be the most important: If there aren’t enough registered nurses, vocational nurses and nursing aides, care doesn’t happen at all.

Per the reports, the VA has fewer low-performing facilities (17.2 percent versus 19.7 percent) and more high-performing facilities (17.2 percent versus 10.8 percent) than the private sector. These numbers aren’t bad, they say, considering that the veterans at these facilities have more serious conditions than are generally seen in civilian facilities. Of the total, only eight VA facilities were rated one star. Reports for the remaining centers will be released by October.
