Are they right for you?
As the popularity and availability of electric vehicles (EV) continues to grow in the U.S., a new survey suggests that many consumers still have a lot to learn about the technology. For example, when asked to choose an acceptable amount of time it should take to charge an EV, the most common answer (28 percent) was ‘‘I don’t know” followed by “30 minutes” (25 percent). The survey was commissioned by MINI USA in advance of the early 2020 U.S. launch of the MINI Cooper SE electric vehicle. “What we learned from the survey is that the typical consumer might not be aware of the many benefits of electric mobility,” says Andrew Cutler, head of corporate communications, MINI USA. “Helping consumers get a better understanding of EV can help them make smarter,
more informed decisions around their next vehicle purchase.” For example, 74 percent of consumers surveyed didn’t know where their nearest EV charging station was located, but charging your EV is easier and more accessible than you might think. A whopping 80 percent of EV owners charge their vehicle right at home. Plus, public charging stations are easy to find online through companies like ChargePoint and EVgo, and most available charging stations are visible in the navigation system of the car. On the other end of the spectrum, 63 percent of those surveyed said they plan to use their EV as a commuting or city car, which is good news for motorists, as experts point out that EVs, which are both fuel efficient and fun to drive, are ideal for everyday commuting and urban driving. Because batteries provide a low center of gravity, electric motors provide fast, powerful acceleration. Thanks to Federal Tax Credits lowering the upfront cost of qualified EVs, going electric is not just stylish and good for the planet, it may make financial sense, too.

Ways to make unpacking and getting settled easier
When it comes to moving, we usually focus on the process of getting organized and boxing up valuables. But we often forget about the debatably more stressful part of moving: unpacking. In fact, Americans take an average of 182 days— more than six months—to finally unpack the last box after moving into a new home, according to research. To make settling into your new home much easier, start by thinking about the process backwards and consider these tips: 1. Measure everything during the home inspection. Use your time on inspection day to collect all room and cabinet dimensions. This will help determine if furniture will fit, where items will go, and how much storage is available. 2. Pack based on where it will go, not where it was. Envisioning where items will go in your new space is key. Then, label each box with its contents, as well as the room where it should be unpacked. 3. Use plastic bags and tape to keep pieces together. For smooth assembly, use packaging tape and small plastic bags to attach screws, nuts and bolts to the bottom of dismantled furniture. This can prevent losing those small, essential pieces and perhaps even reduce the number of hardware store trips on move-in day. 4. Avoid breaks and spills. Fifty-five percent of Americans have experienced an important item being damaged during a move. To make sure your valuables arrive intact, use products that offer increased protection like bubble wrap cushioning and foam pouches. 5. Pack storage items in plastic bins rather than boxes. While cardboard boxes are an easy and cost-effective way to transport the majority of your belongings, plastic storage containers are more ideal for seasonal items that may not be unpacked, but instead stay in storage. Not only will the bins shield contents from the environment, like a damp basement or dusty attic, but their uniform size also will make it easy to create an organized and efficient storage space. These are often managed by local groups such as the senior center or the town. Each person who signs up is given a small plot of dirt to plant flowers and vegetables. They might be the ideal workout for you
If you’ve been going to the gym to work out, or have at least wandered through one to look at the facility and equipment, you might have seen a slightly strange-looking piece of gear. Chances are that no one was using it. It was probably a rowing machine. Rowing machines, or rowers, are still a niche item among those who work out, and that’s good news for us. It means you might have a chance of using one at the gym without waiting for a turn. Rowers might turn out to be one of the best pieces of workout equipment for seniors, for a number of reasons. Rowing is done indoors, so it can be done all year. The rowing action uses the major muscle groups—arms, legs, shoulders and back. The rower has easy-to-difficult settings.
But best of all, it’s low to the floor. There’s a comfort and safety to their ease use. To see what an excellent rower looks like, take a look on your computer at something called the Concept 2. This is not a piece of equipment that you want to rush out and buy. First, these pieces of equipment are expensive, even used. Second, they take up a lot of room—an area nearly 9 feet in length. Best to let the gym cover the cost, space, assembly and maintenance! If you plan on using a rower at the gym, look first at some online videos to see how it’s done. Note the angle of how you sit—don’t lean too far forward or backward. Proper technique will improve results and reduce likelihood of injury. Ask for help in learning the pattern of pulling the chain and bending your knees. Within a few minutes you’ll have it right, and chances are, you’ll have the machine all to yourself. Before you start, ask your doctor about rowing. You’ll likely get a big thumbs up, especially if you combine it with a walking routine.

PROTECTING SENIORS FROM SCAMS
New legislation makes it easier for banks to call authorities
Congress took a big step last year to protect senior’s financial interests. The Senior$afe Act gives immunity to bank employees who call the authorities if they think a senior is being scammed. It’s not quite that simple, but that’s the end result. Too often when seniors are being scammed, they go to the bank to ask about transferring or withdrawing large sums of money and wiring it to others. In scams, that can mean fake grandchildren or fake IRS employees who have scared us. It’s estimated that seniors lose $3 billion per year to financial exploitation.

Until now, the bank was unable to step in, even if it knew something was wrong, being told that privacy was more important than mere suspicions. Now certain bank employees, specially trained to identify questionable activities, will have immunity, or freedom from a lawsuit. And it’s not just banks. Other types of financial institutions also will be given this ability to help. Our investment advisers, brokers, insurance agents, credit unions and others also can train and designate certain employees to act. In return, the institution itself also gets immunity for the disclosure of private information to law enforcement. That’s not to say it’s now required that banks and other institutions call the police if they suspect a senior is being financially exploited. Authors of the bill hope that by providing immunity, it will encourage financial institutions to step up after they’re trained. A few states already have this protection against financial elder abuse, but now it’s federal, and all states will need to follow the law. If enough financial institutions sign up for the program, it could go a long way toward helping seniors to avoid being victims.

With summer fast approaching, it’s time to talk about beverages. What to drink, what not to drink, and why. It will come as little surprise to most who read this that it’s important to drink water, and that drinking sugarsweetened beverages are not the best choice for your health. But let me fill you in on some details to help you make better choices this summer and beyond! Your body can only process a sugar called fructose at a certain rate. Basically, your liver becomes overwhelmed if there is more than 50 grams of fructose flooding in at any given time. What happens if you go over 50 grams of fructose? Your liver is unable to metabolize the fructose to healthy byproducts like glycogen or directly to convert

the fructose to energy. Those are ideal outcomes. When you go over 50 grams though, the liver starts turning it into fat. This can cause fatty liver disease and predispose to diabetes, among other negative effects. A 12 oz can of soda has about 20 grams of fructose in it. So, anything over a 30 oz beverage is going to stress your liver and put your health at risk. Now you know why those 64 oz big gulps at the convenience stores are so dangerous! I like to be safe and not consume more than 24 oz of any sugary drink at any given meal or sitting. What about water? Your kidneys don’t necessarily work better when you are over-hydrated, but they suffer tremendously when you are under-hydrated. It’s far more risky to not drink enough, than to drink more than you need. How much do you need? Enough water intake that you urinate 4-7 times per day and it is very light to clear in color.

12 ounces linguine 1 cup frozen peas 2 tablespoons olive oil 12 ounces boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch chunks ¼ teaspoon Kosher salt ¼ teaspoon pepper ¼ cup fresh lemon juice 4 ounces low-fat cream cheese, cubed, at room temperature 2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest ½ cup grated Parmesan ¼ cup flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped
INSTRUCTIONS 1. Cook linguine per package directions, adding peas during the last 2 minutes of cooking. Reserve 1 cup pasta cooking liquid, then drain pasta and peas. 2. Meanwhile, heat olive oil in large, deep skillet on medium-high. Season chicken with kosher salt and pepper and cook until golden brown on all sides, 4 to 5 minutes. 3. Add lemon juice to skillet and cook, scraping up any browned bits. Add cream cheese and stir until melted; remove from heat. 4. Fold in lemon zest and Parmesan, then parsley. Toss with pasta (adding reserved cooking liquid, 1 tablespoon at a time as necessary). Serve immediately. The relationship between fathers and their children is one of the most important and influential of all human connections. Children want to be like their fathers, or their complete opposites. They can feel protected, smothered, or abandoned by their dads. Know your history. A family health history can help your physician and other health care practitioners identify whether you’re at a higher risk for particular conditions and diseases. 2. Be honest. Your doctor will likely ask you about such health habits as alcohol, tobacco and drug use, as well as the amount of exercise you get. It is important to be honest and accurate when answering these questions. Ask your doctor if you use tobacco, drugs or alcohol, and need help quitting. 3. Make a list. Even if you are just going in for a regular check-up, make a list of the things you want to discuss during your visit and bring it to your appointment. Topics may include symptoms you’ve experienced, ailments you’ve suffered and more. 4. Get screened. Ask your physician about needed health screenings based on your age, sex and other risk factors including family history.
