Learn to prioritize your self care

In its simplest form, loving yourself comes down to consistently carrying out actions that feel aligned with your core beliefs. You are the only one who can take care of you, so create habits in your life to refuel your soul. Try these simple ideas as you start caring for yourself.

Move often When you move, you allow the various forms of energy in your body the space to shift around. If you spend all day sitting in front of a computer (or TV), then your creative, emotional, sexual energies tend to get trapped in your body. So instead of sitting in an office chair or couch, get up and move as often as you can.

Limit the junk your brain consumes Just like when your body feels grumpy, if you feed it awful things consistently, so too does your mood suffer when you feed your mind garbage. Seek to fill your time with positive entertainment, and delete the continual feed of negativity.

Invest in your sleep You spend roughly a third of your life sleeping, so you might as well get good at it.

The way you sleep can either deprive you and deplete you, or it can energize and uplift you.

Be intentional on how you spend your time Enforce real boundaries in your life, so you can carve out time for the things that matter the most to you. Say “no” to people you don’t like spending time with. Spend time with your favorite people on a regular basis. Carve out time in your calendar to make time for fun, lightness and playfulness.

Make time for rest and relaxation Between all of your healthy meals, optimized sleep habits, and playfulness, you want to make sure you’re also allowing yourself the time and space to breathe and relax. Take naps when you feel like it. Rest and relaxation are vital to loving yourself.

Spend time alone Whether you’re single, in a relationship, or married, one of the best ways that you can cultivate a loving relationship with yourself is to regularly spend some time alone.

They charge a one-time rehoming fee per pet ranging $45-$150, depending on the shelter. The rehoming fee helps cover the cost of food, housing and medical care for surrendered animals. It may be worth contacting the shelter again to explain your financial situation to a shelter manager.

You should also put out the word to family, friends, your doctor, your senior center—anyone you have contact with regularly—to see if they know someone who would take your cats.

Braid an impromptu rope – Roll up three lengths of duct tape and then braid them together to make a surprisingly strong rope.

Fix a leaky tent – Put duct tape on the seams.

Bind a large wound – Use the tape to pull the skin together on both sides, then seek help.

Why do we celebrate Washington’s birthday?

Historically, Americans began celebrating George Washington’s Birthday just months after his death, long before Congress declared it a federal holiday.

It was not until 1879, under President Rutherford B. Hayes, that Washington’s Birthday became a legal holiday, to be observed on his birthday, February 22.

Washington’s birthday was celebrated on February 22 until well into the 20th Century. In 1968, Congress passed the Monday Holiday Law to “provide uniform annual observances of certain legal public holidays on Mondays.” By creating more 3-day weekends, Congress hoped to “bring substantial benefits to both the spiritual and economic life of the Nation.”

In a sense, Washington’s birthday helps us reflect on not just the first president, but also the founding of our nation, the values, and what Washington calls in his Farewell Address, the “beloved Constitution and union, as received from the Founders.”

1. “Alley Oop,” in 1960. The comic strip started in 1932 and in 1995 was honored by a commemorative U.S. postage stamp.

2. “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” by the Beatles. Writer John Fred initially misheard the Beatles song and thought the words were “Lucy in disguise.”

3. Both had No. 1 hits after their deaths: “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” for Redding and “Me and Bobby McGee” for Joplin.

4. “Smooth,” beginning in October 1999. It featured Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas.

BUILDING HEALTHY HABITS Small changes can lead to big results

A new year brings about a desire for change, so let’s start with your health! When it comes to our daily meal routine, change can sometimes be challenging.

Studies have shown that it takes from two to eight months to form a new habit. You can create a positive eating “habit” by making small changes over time, like eliminating sugary drinks and high-sodium foods.

Consider making healthy changes that reflect your personal preferences, culture and traditions. Think of each change as a “win” as you build good habits and find solutions that reflect your new healthy eating style. Use the tips below, courtesy of My Plate (www. choosemyplate.gov/start-small-changes), to find little victories that work for you!

Make half your plate fruits and vegetables Focus on whole fruits more often than drinking 100% juice. Snack on fresh, frozen, canned or dried fruits instead of cookies, brownies or other sugar-sweetened treats. Offer whole fruits without saturated fat, sodium or added sugars as dessert.

Vary your veggies to include green, red and orange choices. Add fresh, frozen or canned vegetables to salads, side dishes and recipes.

Prepare your vegetables without sauces, gravies or glazes to lower the amount of sodium, saturated fat and added sugars.

Make half your grains whole grains Choose whole-grain foods more often than refined grains. Make at least half the amount of grains you eat each day whole grains. Find high fiber, whole-grain foods by reading the Nutrition Facts label and ingredients list.

Some common whole grains include oatmeal, wholewheat flour and popcorn.

Move to low-fat and fat-free dairy Choose low-fat or fat-free milk and yogurt. Buy low-fat or fat-free cheese more often than regular cheese. Regular cream cheese, butter and cream are not in the dairy food group because they have little or no calcium. They also are high in saturated fat.

Vary your protien routine Mix up protein foods to include seafood, beans, nuts, seeds, soy, eggs, lean meats and poultry.

By Patricia Goodson, Publisher A couple of months ago, my husband Bob and I had the opportunity to experience an incredible trip to Hawaii. You see, Bob had always wanted to see Hawaii, and take a cruise as well. I thought there had to be a way for us to do both.

After spending time with our friends at Ford’s World Travel, we booked the perfect trip aboard Princess Cruise Line’s “Star Princess.”

We escaped the cool weather of Phoenix at the end of November, and spent nine days at sea, and six days touring the various islands.

We originally thought 15 days would be plenty of time, but we returned wishing we had spent more time on each island. The time at sea, however, was the perfect time to relax, refresh, focus on our relationship, and cultivate new friendships.

The Star Princess was as well-equipped as any 5-star hotel. There’s always something happening on board. If you’re a foodie—this is the place for you. The Princess crew was passionate about their culinary craft. We never had a meal we didn’t enjoy. (I do think they were committed to helping every passenger gain an extra 10 pounds before the voyage concluded).

One of the highlights of our trip included exploring Hilo—the Big Island of Hawaii. It was filled with black-sand beaches, tropical rainforests and volcanic mountains. We learned Mauna Loa, the largest mountain on the planet, soars above the bleak lava fields of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

We also loved our time in Oahu. While Honolulu is Hawaii’s state capital and only major city, we concentrated our time on visiting Pearl Harbor, where the site of the USS Arizona Memorial and the “Punchbowl” are haunting reminders of the tragic events of December 7, 1941.

To say Maui was stunning would be an understatement. We visited Mt. Haleakala, a dormant volcano, which rises 10,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean. Haleakala means “The House of the Sun.” To the Hawaiians, it appeared that the sun both rose from and set in the depths of its massive crater.

There’s something to be said for continuing to learn as we get older. Not only does it keep our brains active, but sometimes learning new things is just plain interesting and fun.

Why not make it a goal to identify and investigate at least one new thing per month? Here are some possible ideas.

New authors Librarians have a “what to read next” reference book resource that offers suggestions about what authors someone might like based on previous books they’ve read. Tell a librarian what author you’ve enjoyed, and you’ll get suggestions for others to try. If there isn’t a library near you, you can do this online. Foreign language If you spoke a foreign language as a child or just took the required two years in high school, how much do you remember? Duolingo (www.duolingo.com) is a great, free online tool with exercises tailored to you.

There are 35 languages to learn! You can study online or on a phone app. If you get serious, you can pay $6.99 per month to remove ads, but you don’t need to. Imagine the possibility of learning a new language and then going to the country where it’s spoken and putting it to use!

New tech skills Some senior centers have a weekly tech hour where a knowledgeable geek from the college comes in to solve any computer problems and answer how-to questions. You could go to learn more about photo-editing software with the goal of learning to manage and manipulate photos to create your own masterpieces!

Break out of routine Shop at the new grocery store in the next town.

Knit something that isn’t a scarf. Sample an exotic selection of teas. Put a new spin on what’s become routine. With a little planning, you can ensure that 2020 is a year full of new experiences.
