Per a new law, you can now put a freeze on your credit report for free. Gone is the $10 (or more) fee to freeze your credit and another equal fee to unfreeze it later. Multiplying by three for the bigthree reporting companies, the cost kept too many people from taking steps to protect their credit.

There are several ways to freeze your credit. If you call or submit your request online, the companies have to freeze your credit in one day. Later, if you need to unlock your reports (if you want to apply for something), they have to do that within one hour. You also can freeze it by mail. You can call each of the reporting agencies at the following numbers: Experian: 1-888-397-3742 Equifax: 1-800-685-1111 TransUnion: 1-888-909-8872

All three companies—Equifax, Experian and TransUnion—now are required by law to give consumers this option after the huge credit debacle last year, when over 148 million people had their information stolen. Unfortunately, you still need to contact all three agencies. Freezing one does not automatically freeze the other two. Why is it important to freeze your credit? With locked reports, no one can sign up for new accounts in your

HERE’S A TIP

TIP 1 Stretch shoes with a zipper-top baggie! Insert a plastic bag into the shoe, where your feet go. Then add water just to fill. Put them in the freezer until solid. The ice expands as it freezes, which stretches the shoe. TIP 2 If you’re replacing a hinge to re-hang a door and you need to use the same holes, add grip by placing a matchstick or toothpick in the hole before rescrewing the attachments. Just break it off flush with the door jamb. It will add some security to the hole so it won’t be so loose.

TIP 5 When defrosting meats in the fridge (never on the counter, right?), make sure they are sitting in a tray or plate with a lip. If the plastic leaks, you don’t want meat dripping on your other groceries. Defrost meats on the bottom shelf, just in case. TIP 6 Sometimes old tricks are the best tricks: Use a cut half of a lemon liberally sprinkled with salt to scrub a wood cutting board clean. The salt acts as an abrasive while the acids in the lemon neutralize odors and bacteria. Rinse and dry.
