THE GIFT OF FORGIVENESS It’s for you
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. —Martin Luther King, Jr. There is no love without forgiveness, and there is no forgiveness without love. —Bryant H. McGill The ineffable joy of forgiving and being forgiven forms an ecstasy that might well arouse the envy of the gods. —Elbert Hubbard
The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong. —Mahatma Gandhi The most important thing that I learned in growing up is that forgiveness is something that, when you do it, you free yourself to move on. —Tyler Perry It’s one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself, to forgive. Forgive everybody. —Maya Angelou Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them. —Bruce Lee Love is an act of endless forgiveness, a tender look which becomes a habit. —Peter Ustinov
I believe forgiveness is the best form of love in any relationship. It takes a strong person to say they’re sorry and an even stronger person to forgive. —Yolanda Hadid
To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you. —Lewis B. Smedes
When you forgive, you in no way change the past—but you sure do change the future. —Bernard Meltzer
Acceptance and tolerance and forgiveness, those are life-altering lessons. —Jessica Lange

Those who study such things say that if you were (for reasons unspecified) to eat the liver of a polar bear, you’d die. The amount of vitamin A stored in that organ constitutes a fatal dose for humans. Did you know that high-quality opals can be more valuable than diamonds? The next time you’re planning a trip to Indiana, keep in mind that in that state, it is illegal to talk behind a person’s back or engage in “spiteful gossiping.” Lightning isn’t solely a phenomenon of Earth: Astronomers have noted lightning bolts on Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Venus.

Historians say that Russia’s Peter the Great was nearly 7 feet tall. A woman in Tennessee was once arrested for biking while intoxicated—and she was on a stationary bike at the gym at the time. You might be surprised to learn that gravity makes you shorter. It’s true; gravity compresses your spine—in a weightless environment, you would be 2 to 3 inches taller than you are here on Earth. Aquaman (PG-13) Jason Momoa helms the fourth highest-grossing solo superhero film to date, the origin story of Arthur Curry, the half-breed son of the queen of Atlantis and a lighthouse keeper. Raised as a warrior by an Atlantean mentor (Willem Dafoe) but rejecting his tidal roots, Arthur comes to terms with his legacy by battling alongside warrior and fellow underwater royal Mera (Amber Heard) for the soul of the ocean while fending off a sworn enemy and getting the girl. Second Act (PG-13) Are street smarts as good as book smarts? Well, this movie pits Jenny from the Block against elegantly coiffed Madame Lopez to see which is the better JLo. She stars as Maya, a 40-something management material who missed her window. But then she is given a social media/ Photoshop makeover that gets her an interview for a prestigious Madison Avenue job—which she lands, of course. Will the money and prestige turn Maya into someone she is not, or the person she is meant to be? It’s standard girl power rom-com fare that will satisfy the middle ground when your book club fizzles out and you need something to fill the time.

MOMENTS IN TIME
WHAT HAPPENED IN HISTORY
Big events that occurred during the month of April
April 9, 1962 President John F. Kennedy throws out the ceremonial first pitch in Washington D.C.’s new stadium, called simply “D.C. Stadium.” He continued a tradition that began in 1910 when President William Taft threw out Major League Baseball’s first openingday pitch in old Griffith Stadium. April 10, 1866 The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is founded in New York by philanthropist and diplomat Henry Bergh after he witnessed and later wrote about work horses beaten by their peasant drivers in Russia.
April 13, 1360 A hailstorm kills an estimated 1,000 of King Edward’s III’s English soldiers in France. The heavy losses were seen as a sign from God, convincing King Edward to negotiate peace with the French. April 14, 1986 The U.S. launches airstrikes against Libya in retaliation for its sponsorship of terrorism against American troops and citizens. The attacks were mounted by Navy attack jets in the Mediterranean and Air Force bombers from bases in England. France
April 15, 1865 President Abraham Lincoln dies from an assassin’s bullet. Shot by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theater in Washington the night before. Lincoln lived for nine hours before succumbing to the severe head wound he sustained. April 16, 1943 Researcher Albert Hofmann, a Swiss chemist, hallucinates after accidentally consuming LSD-25, a synthetic drug he had created. LSD was made illegal in the U.S. in 1965.
April 17, 1970 Apollo 13, the U.S. lunar spacecraft that suffered a severe malfunction on its journey to the moon, safely returns to Earth. Disaster struck 200,000 miles from Earth when an oxygen tank blew up in the spacecraft, disrupting the supply of electricity, light, oxygen and water. Astronaut John Swigert reported to mission control on Earth, “Houston, we’ve had a problem here.” April 18, 1983 American runner Joan Benoit wins her second Boston Marathon in the women’s division with a time of 2:22:43. The following year, she became the first person to win both in Boston as well as in the Olympics.
CUSTOM DRAPES
April 11, 1945 The American Third Army liberates the Buchenwald concentration camp, near Weimar, Germany. Among those saved by the Americans was Elie Wiesel, who would go on to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. April 12, 1914 The Mark Strand Theatre opens to the public in New York City, the first of the “dream palaces,” known for their impressive size and luxuriously appointed interiors. The Strand seated some 3,000 people.

TIP 1 Want a better way to recycle your plastic grocery bags? Simply gather them all when you put away your purchases and store them in the trunk of your car. Then, the next time you grocery shop, put them in the appropriate container at the store—not your curbside recycling bin. TIP 2 When replacing the box of baking soda from your fridge, dump the old one into your kitchen drain and follow with a couple cups of white vinegar. After a few minutes, flush the drain with hot water to leave it smelling fresh. TIP 3 If you accidentally spill water on a book, separate the pages with pieces of wax paper. Then close the book. As it dries, the wax paper wicks away moisture and prevents wrinkles. TIP 4
To check for toilet leaks, add a few drops of food coloring to the tank. If, without flushing, you see the bowl water start to change color, you have a leak. WWW.THEGRANDSEASON.COM

Fun gift alternatives for Easter
When it comes to Easter, there’s no doubt about it: candy is the go-to gift item for kids. But whether it’s to avoid triggering food allergies or sugar overload, or you just want to do something a little different this year, there are many reasons you may be in need of some alternative gift ideas. With that in mind, here are some Easter gift ideas other than candy: Great books You don’t need to forgo the Easter basket entirely. Just fill the basket with books in lieu of sweets. This is an opportunity to foster a love of reading and help build a young

reader’s personal library. Music maker Give the gift of music for life with an instrument that’s designed to help someone learn to play for the very first time or dial up their existing skills. Fun movie night If you’re looking for a gift the whole family can enjoy together, a projector to create an at-home theater experience is a good solution. Art kit For budding creative types, consider an art kit. From Easter egg-decorating—if you want to stick with the seasonal theme—to beading to sand art bottles, there is no shortage of arts and crafts kits for children of all ages that make great gifts.

Give yourself the gift of forgiveness
Although forgiveness brings many benefits, particularly to the “forgiver,” to forgive is not always easy. While everyone may have a unique perspective on how to forgive, the following strategies have been proven effective for many people. Express yourself When trying to decide how to forgive someone, it may or may not help to express your feelings to the other person. If the relationship is important and you would like to maintain it, it may be very useful for you to tell the other person—in non-threatening language—how their actions affected you. If the person is no longer in your life, or if you have reason to believe that things will get much worse if you address the situation directly, you may want to just write a letter and tear it up (or burn it) and move on. Look for the positive Journaling about a situation where you were hurt or M Fo O rd R i rin TO Tr de ce to R C av t ss he O el’ C se AC s ru H is es
wronged can help you process what happened and move on; however, the way you write about it and what you choose to focus on can make all the difference in how easy it becomes to forgive. Research shows that journaling about the benefits you’ve received from a negative situation can actually help you to forgive and move on more easily. Cultivate empathy While you don’t have to agree with what the other person did to you, when working on how to forgive, it often helps to put yourself in the other person’s shoes. Research has shown that empathy, particularly with men, is associated with forgiveness, and can make the process easier. Instead of seeing them as “the enemy,” try to understand the factors that they were dealing with. Get help Sometimes it can be difficult to forget about the past and forgive, particularly if the offending acts were traumatic. If you’re still having difficulty knowing how to forgive someone who’s wronged you in a significant way, you may have better success working with a therapist who can help you work through your feelings on a deeper level and personally support you through the process.

3. If the temperature in your bedroom allows it, try sleeping under a heavy or weighted blanket. Long used by psychiatrists in occupational therapy as a tool for calming patients with sensory overstimulation, the all-over “deep touch pressure” of weighted blankets helps promote deeper relaxation.
SLEEP BETTER Five things that will help you sleep
HEALTH
One simply can not overestimate the importance of getting a good night’s sleep. But sometimes that’s easier said than done. If you’re struggling to catch some quality shut eye, here are some ideas that just might transform your life by improving your ability to get quality rest.
4. Still having trouble sleeping? Here’s a breathing trick you can try. Touch your tongue to a spot directly behind your top front teeth, then breathe in through your nose for four seconds. Then hold your breath for seven seconds and exhale through your mouth for eight seconds. Repeat the whole process three times to fully decompress…if you don’t fall asleep before you reach the end.
1. Right before you go to bed, try taking a hot bath or long shower— the rise and resulting sudden drop in your body temperature will help to make you feel more relaxed—and sleepy. 2. Wear warm socks to bed. When you sleep, your body redirects blood flow to your hands and feet to redistribute heat from your core to your extremities; cold feet can inhibit this blood flow and therefore make it harder for you to maintain a restful sleep. Socks are the fix.
5. If none of these techniques are helping you sleep (and you’ve tried cutting out before-bed caffeine and sugars), then you need to do a little more to set your mind at ease. Introductory mindfulness techniques, such as focusing in on your breathing or studying an imagined object (with your eyes closed) for five minutes, can allow you to finally slip away from the stresses of daily life and find a more restful sleep.

KEEPING IT SAFE
TREASURE
Five ways to protect your valuables
From engagement rings to family heirlooms, your jewelry and other valuables are timeless and important. Luckily, there are steps you can take to help keep these items safe. Insurance experts from Travelers suggest the following tips to help you protect your most treasured possessions: Insure Your Wedding Ring Immediately Wedding rings hold great sentimental and monetary value, but many individuals don’t think to cover them under an insurance policy. Valuable items policies, such as a personal articles floater (PAF), insure individual pieces that have a value that may exceed the limits of your homeowners policy. Store Your Jewelry in Unlikely Places Burglars often know exactly where to look for jewelry and other valuables. Storing your most prized pieces in uncommon spaces, such as a bookshelf or your bathroom, can add an extra layer of protection.
TAKING CONTROL
MONEY
Getting a grip on your spending
A well-crafted budget provides financial clarity, and is an essential tool for managing your finances. Outlining your spending for specific household needs over a period of time can give you more control over your money and better position you to meet financial goals. In order to create an effective budget, you must first gain an accurate understanding of your cash flow, or the amount of money that flows in and out of your household. Start by determining your monthly income, then calculate the amount you spend on essential expenses every month. Any income remaining after your expenses are paid can be allocated for saving, investing or recreational spending. A Certified Financial Planner (CFP) professional can help you make these calculations and provide guidance on how to use leftover income. Here are four helpful suggestions for evaluating cash flow and getting started on your budget:

Use Safe Cleaning Methods Many people are surprised to hear that warm water and dish soap are among the best methods for keeping jewelry clean. Harsher methods, such as ultrasonic cleaners, can damage certain stones. Monitor Extreme Temperature and Light Exposure Light and heat can affect the color of gemstones and metals. Extreme temperatures can also damage clasps, making it easier for stones to fall out of beloved pieces. Know Your Insurance Policy While homeowners insurance covers your home and its contents, typical policies only cover up to $1,500 of jewelry. If your jewelry has a higher value than that, it’s worth considering an additional policy, such as a PAF or the Valuable Items Plus program from Travelers, both of which provide coverage for items of higher value. You can ask your insurance agent or carrier about other policy options, including what their limits are and how to add them to your overall insurance program. It may be hard to imagine the theft or loss of your most valuable possessions, but these things happen, and that’s why it’s important to take steps to protect your jewelry with customizable insurance options.
Think about your “money rules” Do your spending and savings decisions vary based on the source of income? For example, you might use a work income bonus differently than your regular work pay. If so, how does each decision support your monthly budget needs and long-range financial priorities? Account for all payment methods Consider checks, cash, credit and debit cards, automatic payroll deposits and deductions, online payments and other payment accounts such as PayPal, Zelle or Venmo. Taking the time to collect all the statements necessary to create a true picture of existing money flows is imperative to taking financial control. Reconsider automated purchases Keeping credit card information on file with online retailers such as Amazon and iTunes makes shopping quick and painless, but it also makes it easier to overspend. Taking the time to enter payment information manually means more time to reconsider your purchase. Consider your budget a “spending and saving” plan Make a line item for regular savings as a cash expense. Budgeting can be tricky, and it is only one piece of the financial puzzle. A financial planner can help even more. APRIL 2019 • THE GRAND SEASON

STRONGER TOGETHER
LOVE
Five steps to forgiving your spouse
If you want to have a healthy relationship, forgiveness in marriage is critical. When your husband forgets to do something you asked or says something in a tone you don’t like, deal with it right then. Tell him how you feel. Then make up your mind to wipe that slate clean and forgive. Here are five steps to get you moving in the right direction.
express the depth of your hurt. Make sure you feel heard before you move on. 3. Plan for change The goal here is not to punish your spouse with requirements, but to set up guidelines that you both agree to. That way, there will be fewer gray areas that can lead to disappointment later in your relationship.
1. Forgiveness is a choice, not a feeling You may not feel like forgiving. You may want to harbor the anger and hurt and make your spouse pay. But, once you decide you want to grant forgiveness, you can begin to work through those feelings.
4. Stop the video Do not replay your spouse’s infraction over and over in your head. When your mind starts to wander and you begin to dwell on the incident, tell yourself to stop. It’s one thing to need to talk to someone like a counselor about your pain so you can move past it, but it’s another to keep inflicting the pain on yourself by dwelling on it. Deciding to truly forgive your spouse is re-committing to your relationship. Don’t sabotage it by focusing on the negative.
2. Share your hurt After your spouse has apologized and asked for forgiveness, you need to talk about the matter before you move on. It might be uncomfortable, but you need to share how you feel. Don’t point a finger; just share to
5. Give yourself time Deciding to forgive will not strip away all of the pain. It’s natural to feel raw and disappointed. Forgiveness is a process. Keep choosing to forgive and creating a solid foundation of trust to strengthen your marriage.

DON’T BE SEDUCED BY ROMANCE SCAMS Keeping your eyes wide open when dating
e r o f l Be te!
Caitl’s too La
Romance can be lovely...except when it isn’t. Disaster can be part of the package if the new “perfect match” is a scammer. There are far too many ways for thieves to con seniors. To stay safe, keep your guard up and be aware of the situations below. Online Dating Sites You can’t really know who’s on the other end of the ads you view, but there are some warning signs that a potential date might not be honest. He or she might profess love all too quickly, or send photos that don’t look real. You might be encouraged to delete your profile and instead exchange direct email. Maybe you’ll be told you can’t meet yet because the other person is out of the country, and there are excuses about why you can’t talk on the phone. Eventually there will be an “emergency,” and you’ll be asked to help by sending money...and then more money. Drug Mules Many seniors have been conned into sneaking drugs into other countries. A new love will ask a senior to travel overseas, even making the arrangements. Unfortunately, those arrangements include taking along an extra piece of luggage. It could contain anything, but it’s often drugs. If the senior gets caught, claiming innocence doesn’t help when stuck in a foreign jail. Financial Assets Co-mingling of assets or accounts is another red flag. Don’t do it, especially if you intend to leave money to your heirs. The more assets you have, the more you’re at-risk of having your money stolen. Be careful how much financial information you give out about yourself. Setting up a senior to be scammed doesn’t have to happen overnight. Sometimes the scheme can play out for months while trust is built and information disclosed. If you suspect you’ve been scammed, call the anti-fraud hotline at 1-855-303-9470. FOR ADVERTISING INFORMATION CALL (623) 594-1630

EARTH DAY
HOME
Impact the world at home by Courtney Greger
In honor of Earth Day (April 22, 2019), let us consider how being mindful of the three Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) at home can make a difference far beyond it.
What can I reuse? Can you refurbish cabinets instead of getting new ones? Can new paint upgrade a finish? Can old items be used by someone else? Learning to reuse or repurpose is essential for cutting down waste. Not remodeling? Try these basic ideas: • Send gently used books to schools • Donate your older fashion looks to charities • Paint old furniture and repurpose it • Use old spaghetti sauce jars to serve as pots for plants • Use rechargeable batteries
Reduce Stop the clutter, slow down the buying. Do you need it or just want it? Is there something else that can be used for this purpose? Here are a few things you can do immediately to reduce your consumer footprint. • Print on both sides of the paper • Pay bills electronically • Remove your name from mailing lists • Read newspapers online • Avoid using disposable items like paper plates, cups and utensils • Avoid buying overpackaged items
Recycle If it cannot be reused, then recycle all materials possible. Glass, wood and cardboard packaging can be recycled, not just thrown away. Recycling items means the item will be repurposed into raw material that can then be reshaped into a new item. Choose recycled products when purchasing new ones. • Use paper products that are made from recycled materials • Avoid buying hazardous materials that are difficult to recycle • Choose environmentally responsible products
Reuse When remodeling or updating your home really consider:
Remember, your choices as a consumer can significantly impact the world your grandchildren inherit.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

Beating seasonal allergies
Allergies are the sixth leading cause of chronic illness in the U.S. and more than 50 million Americans suffer from them each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. When it comes to spring allergies, you don’t need to anticipate the season with dread. There are steps you can take to proactively dodge allergens and mitigate debilitating symptoms, according to the experts at AccuWeather. Change your routine Are you a morning bather? Experts say that if you suffer from outdoor allergies, you would be wise to switch to evening showers. This will rid your hair and skin of pollen, so you don’t bring it to bed with you. No matter what time of day you shampoo and scrub, you’ll want to wash your linens in hot water, to remove as much pollen as possible.
Stay in-the-know From dry winds blowing tree pollen into the air, to wet, rainy days causing dust mites and mold to thrive, weather has a huge impact on the spread of allergens and, subsequently, the way you feel, say experts. Protect Indoor Air Fresh air may sound appealing, but opening your car and home’s windows is a fast-track to a high pollen count indoors. For a breeze, stick to air conditioning, as fans can kick up dust and pollen into the air. Consider your wardrobe For those times when you must be out and about on high-pollen count days, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect yourself. A scarf or mask over your mouth and nose can be useful when symptoms are severe. When you get home, be sure to remove outerwear, including shoes, in your mud room or foyer so you don’t track allergens throughout the house, particularly in areas where you sleep and spend the most time. This spring, don’t let sniffles, sneezing and wheezing get the best of you. For a more comfortable season, check the weather often and take proper precautions.

Sometimes a little creativity in the kitchen can make a massive difference in the work required to make a meal. Here are some unique ways to simplify your tasks in the kitchen. Pit Cherries Place each cherry over the top of a water bottle and push the pits through with a chopstick. Core Strawberries Push a straw through the strawberry from the bottom point to core it. Juice Lemons and Limes Press firmly on the fruit whole rolling it on the counter, then slice in half—the juice will squeeze out easily.

one bad choice doesn’t have to define you. You can’t control how others define you, but you can control how you define yourself.
LET IT GO
YOU
Don’t let your mistakes define you
Forgiving yourself can be hard work, but it’s worth it. Here are some helpful tips to consider:
Grieve your loss If a tragedy was averted in your situation, focus on the good of that, and be thankful. If, however, a tragic loss occurred know it’s okay to grieve the pain. Beating yourself up constantly is not a requirement of grief. Seek forgiveness from others Forgiveness from others can free you up to forgive yourself. If you haven’t yet, seek forgiveness from the person you hurt.
Decide to let it go In the process of forgiving, the first barrier you have to remove is within your own mind. You must make the decision: I will not dwell on this incident. That decision doesn’t guarantee you’ll stop the mental video, but it draws a line in the sand and provides a starting point. Look at what you’ve done…objectively A big obstacle to forgiving yourself is the inability to see things objectively. Perhaps what you did was a big deal. Or maybe, it just feels like it was. Pretend it was someone else that you love who did what you did. Ask yourself how you would view them. Own it, but don’t be owned by it Taking responsibility for what you did is important. But
Focus on what you can learn Everyone fails. Everyone hurts others eventually. It’s part of the human experience and condition. But not everyone will learn from what they do. Be someone who is willing to learn from your past to benefit your future. Record your reflections Sometimes capturing a record of your thoughts and feelings can help you face them honestly. Do some light journaling for a few days. Focus on what you are struggling to let go of and what you would do if you could be free of the burden of guilt you feel.
Arizona’s hot summers and monsoons can cause major damage to your roofs exterior and underlayment. Don’t wait until you have a leak, call Sun City Roofing to inspect your homes roof today! Winter residents should have their roof checked to help prevent costly repairs.
Your roof is one of the most important components of your home. If your roof is over 10 years old, if it has multiple layers or missing shingles or tiles, if there is physical damage, or if you have leaks it’s time to call Sun City Roofing.
