Laurel and Hardy ruled movie theaters as one of the top comedy teams from 1921-1951. If you don’t know who they are, you’ll be able to discover them in the upcoming British film “Stan & Ollie,” which will star Englishman Steve Coogan.

Also in the works is an upcoming English TV movie about the supposedly infamous time that Elizabeth Taylor (Stockard Channing), Marlon Brando (Brian Cox) and Michael Jackson (Joseph Finnes) rented a car after 9/11 to drive to Los Angeles because the airports were closed. The trio got as far as Ohio and flew the rest of the way.

Since all three stars are gone, who knows what happened during that car trip? Imagine seeing Liz, Marlon and Jacko at a greasy spoon drinking “joe!”

GARLIC AND LEMON SARDINES WITH PARMESAN PASTA

If you don’t care for sardines, replace them with 2 (5-6 ounces) cans of chunk tuna packed in oil.

Ingredients • 8 oz. linguine or fettuccine • 4 tbsps. extra-virgin olive oil, divided • 4 cloves garlic, minced • 1/2 small yellow onion, peeled and diced • 2 tbsps. tomato paste • 1/2 tsp. ground sage • 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes • 2 slices bread, white or whole-wheat, for breadcrumbs; or 1 cup packaged breadcrumbs • 1/4 cup lemon juice • 1 tsp. freshly ground pepper • 1 tsp. salt • 2 (3- to 4-oz.) cans boneless, skinless sardines, drained and flaked • 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley • 1 cup finely shredded Parmesan cheese Directions 1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add enough salt so that the water tastes salty. Add pasta and

cook according to package directions. Drain, reserving 1/2 cup of the water to add to the sauce.

2. Meanwhile, heat 2 tbsps. oil in a small nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and onion, cook, stirring, until fragrant and sizzling but not brown, about 20 seconds. Add the tomato paste, sage and 1/8 tsp. of the cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes, and cook for 1-2 minutes. Transfer the garlic mixture to a large bowl.

3. To make fresh breadcrumbs: Trim crusts from the bread slices. Tear bread into pieces and process in a food processor until coarse crumbs form.

4. Wipe out the pan. Heat the remaining 2 tbsps. of the oil in the pan over medium heat. Add breadcrumbs and 1/8 tsp. of the cayenne or red pepper flakes and cook, stirring, until crispy and golden brown, 5 to 6 minutes. Transfer to a plate.

5. Whisk the lemon juice, the pepper and salt into the garlic oil. Add the pasta to the bowl along with the sardines, 1/4 cup of the parsley, 3/4 cup of the Parmesan and the reserved pasta water, about 1/4 cup at a time, to bring the sauce together. Gently stir to combine. Serve sprinkled with the breadcrumbs, and the remaining parsley and Parmesan.

How to engage positively to defuse a potentially explosive situation.

Regardless of where you spend your time, you’re bound to find yourself faced with a cranky person.

Here are some ways you can keep them from ruining your mood.

1. Use a kind (or neutral) tone.

It’s tempting to respond the way you’ve been spoken to, but that will only make an unpleasant interaction worse.

Keep in mind that you’re encountering someone at his or her worst (perhaps in the middle of a bad day, during a period of low blood sugar, etc.) and pause before you respond. Remind yourself to use a kind or neutral tone.

2. Try reversing your reaction.

If you want to yell, speak softly. Responding the opposite way from how you want to react can lead to a much more positive interaction—and it’s another great way to help you keep your cool.

3. Don’t take it (too) personally.

If someone snaps at you, it can feel as if you’re somehow the cause of this change in mood.

Crankiness is often a result of something going on internally or something unrelated to the current interaction. Consider how you feel when you’re cranky.

Usually it has little to do with the other person, right?

4. Break it up with a time out.

The last thing a cranky person wants to hear is: “Are you okay? Why are you in a bad mood?” Questions like these are rarely answered honestly and often irritate those feeling cranky.

Instead of peppering someone with questions, step back and do something different.

5. Create a crankiness code word.

To communicate quickly about crankiness (without having to ask questions), create a simple one-word signal to say, “Hey, you’re being a bit cranky now so I’m going to give you your space.”

Although you might like to, you’ll never be able to completely avoid the crankiness of others, but with these tips you’ll be able to better cope when the moods of others go from good to grouchy.

LOOKING TO BE A BETTER GRANDPARENT? The world has changed, and time with your grandkids is nothing like the time your spent with yours.

You can create a deep, loving relationship with your grandchildren by sharing the things you love with them, and by being available to learn about the ideas and activities that excite them.

Take it easy together. Make an effort to enjoy leisure time with your grand-children. As a grandparent, you get to interact with your grandchildren without the same daily pressures of a parent. Allow yourself to slow down and become really absorbed in

an activity. Moving at a slower pace than usual can give children a sense that time can be ‘stretched’— that you don’t need to hurry through activities. And, as with adults, it gives them the psychic space to feel, reflect and express emotions without feeling rushed.

Go outside. Children love the outdoors and trips to the park or the beach can be a great jumping-off point for some wonderful adventures and happy memories.

Nature walks and day hikes can provide lots of interesting things to talk about, and water activities can be especially fun. Throwing stones into the water or watching the current play with sticks are simple activities that can be fascinating to children.

Share your interests. Engaging in hobbies and activities that you or your grandchild loves can be a great way to spend time together and learn about each other. Sometimes activities that you might not expect your grandchildren to be interested in, like knitting or gardening, might turn out to provide an important point of connection. Similarly, if you take an interest in their passions, like trading cards or the Harry Potter books, they get to share their knowledge and it may open them up more.

Making the most of your time together. On occasion, spend time with individual grand-children. It will give you an opportunity to bond, without competition, with one grandchild at a time. Concerts and plays, movies, science centers and museums, parks or walks in the neighborhood provide opportunities to be together and to exchange ideas and opinions. Tell stories about games or trips you shared when the grandchild’s parents were young. This is a great way to weave a ‘tapestry’ of shared experiences for the whole family.

You Can Carry 14 Clubs—But Which 14?

Proper set makeup is largely a distance-gapping question, so spend time at the range determining how far you hit each club. You may have a 15- or 20-yard hole that a hybrid, driving iron or fairway wood can fill.

“More critical,” says custom clubmaker Mark Timms, “is dialing in your scoring clubs because they’ll help you get the ball close to the hole.” Don’t be afraid to replace a long club (adios, 3-iron!) with a 58- or 60-degree wedge, even with multiple wedges in your bag.

You Catch Your Irons Thin “This results either from swinging on a plane that’s too flat, or from lifting up through impact,” says Top 100 Teacher Brady Riggs. “Either way, you need to deliver the club to the ball on a steeper descending path. Move your feet closer together at address and make sure your left shoulder is pointing down toward the ball in your down-swing. As you swing down, rather than using your arms and shoulders to power the club, let the club’s weight fall down into the ground. The club should feel

heavy through impact and make a nice ‘thump’ as it passes through the ball.”
