NOTE

It’s hard to believe Labor Day has come and gone! Over the long weekend I couldn’t help but reflect on the passing of Senator John McCain. Regardless of your political beliefs, there’s no denying the he was a patriot with incredible vision, clarity and a passion for our Great Nation. Many years ago, I had the opportunity to meet Senator McCain while working in Washington, D.C., and I was truly impressed. Despite being a man who wielded incredible power throughout the corridors of Washington, D.C., what impressed me most was how he treated the people around him. He will be missed. The theme for this month’s issue of The Grand Season Family is clarity. With the kids back in school and the holidays creeping up around the corner, I have felt the need to find clarity in my life. A friend of mine, recording artist Matthew West, has captured my attention in the last several weeks with a song called “The Beautiful Things We Miss” that has these thought-provoking lyrics: We don’t get to rewind There’s no such thing as next time Help me remember, we don’t get this back They were right when they said don’t blink It all goes faster than you think

Help me remember The beautiful things we miss Open up my eyes, Lord I don’t want to miss it Open up my eyes, Lord Before the beautiful things I love Become the beautiful things I miss So often, we slide through life letting the tyranny of the urgent overshadow the essential. But I’ve realized each day I’m experiencing beautiful moments that I definitely don’t want to miss. This month I hope you can take time to reflect on your life, and have an opportunity to clarify what the “it” is you’re chasing. Savor the beautiful moments!

You will never win if you never begin. —Helen Rowland Clarity is the most important thing. I can compare clarity to pruning in gardening. You know, you need to be clear. If you are not clear, nothing is going to happen. You have to be clear. Then you have to be confident about your vision. And after that, you just have to put a lot of work in.

—Diane von Furstenberg

Beautiful things comfort; they bring a real clarity and ease. We have to continue to make our environments beautiful— it’s sort of like a prayer. If you surround yourself with beautiful things, you have a better life—one with more oxygen.

YOU

CHART YOUR COURSE Travel toward your dreams

Don’t place the hope of future success in the hands of someone else. Relying on someone or something to save you, only brings a sense of victimization that paralyzes your ability to think clearly, creatively and quickly. Instead, take charge of shaping your own circumstances, and good, positive, game-changing things will begin to happen. Whether you’re looking to make wholesale changes in your life or just want to fine-tune it a little, here are some guidelines that will help you unleash the power to take ownership for your actions, decisions, successes and failures.

Redefine accountability.

Does the mere mention of the word accountability make you shudder? Staying true to yourself and your goals should not be drudgery. You must view your accountability as a gift to yourself, a voluntary mindset to ensure success, not something you’re force-feeding yourself even though you hate it.

10

The Grand Season family

Think as if your life depended on it.

When you shift to a determined, creative mindset, you begin to discover solutions for challenges that you may have believed were out of your control. If your life depended on it, would you come up with a new idea or strategy to save yourself? Absolutely!

evaluator needs to know that he won’t suffer any blowback if he is totally honest. Feedback is key to overcoming blind spots and achieving better results.

Ask yourself, am I a renter or an owner?

Everything will exact a certain price from you—energy, effort, patience, resources. Success comes when you hit a tipping point and begin to desire your goal more than you dread the cost of reaching it.

We care more for the things we own than for the things we rent, because we don’t have as much invested in things that are temporary; there’s not as much at stake. When you own something—whether it’s a car, a work assignment or a relationship— you make an investment, usually involving some degree of sacrifice. If you’re really committed to achieving your goal, go all in.

Ask for feedback.

Make it happen!

You’ve got to want it more than you don’t want it.

Soliciting advice and criticism from others creates accountability. For this to work, you will need to convince your mentor, friend, colleague or significant other whom you’re appealing to that you want to know what he really thinks. The

September 2018

You have the choice to fulfill your aspirations or wallow in the blame game and victim cycle. True success doesn’t come from the outside but from within. Taking greater personal accountability is the key to succeeding in everything you do.

LOVE

SPARK SOMETHING NEW Infuse your marriage with passion!

By Harv Powers, Ph.D. What makes you feel alive? It’s an interesting question, isn’t it? The answer has nothing to do with your blood pressure or oxygen levels, rather those things that make you feel vibrant and passionate. Poet David Whyte said, “If something does not bring you alive, it has become too small for you.” Think about a plant outgrowing its pot. Or reading a book 25 times in a row. Or even going to the same restaurant week after week. If your marriage has been a little dull, consider infusing it with passion by trying these tips:

Change it up

Routine creates stability, but it also has an unintentional down side. Habituation (doing the same thing over and over) can lead to anesthesia. Boredom kills any relationship, a little at a time. Make small daily changes that let the fresh air in relationally; get up early and watch the sun rise over coffee; surprise your partner with breakfast in bed; take a drive without having a planned destination, or eat dinner on a card table in the front lawn.

Switch it up

Ever have this conversation on date night: Partner 1: “What do you want to do?” Partner 2 “I don’t know, what do you want to do?” Switch it up by alternating who is in charge of planning the night out. Here are some guidelines:

• Flip a coin to determine who starts first. The winner plans the date for themselves. Pick a new activity or one that you haven’t done in a long time. Let your partner know to wear cut-offs or formal wear. Keep the rest a mystery. • If you are not the planner, try anything once. Have a good attitude and you may have more fun than you think.

Learn it up

Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it brings human beings relationally alive. Learn something new together! Try dance lessons, learning a foreign language, discovering how to fly fish, take an art class together, explore how to lay tile, or attend a photography class. What brings you alive? The answer is you! Have fun exploring new things together!

FAMILY

WHAT IS YOUR Create connectedness in your home.

What is the purpose for your family? Have you ever thought about that question? In the corporate world, much time is spent on developing a mission statement to help an organization stay true to its purpose, so it can thrive for years to come.

What Is a Family Mission Statement?

“A family mission statement is a combined, unified expression from all family members of what your family is all about—what it is you really want to do and be— and the principles you choose to govern your family life.” -Stephen Covey

STEP 1:

Talk About What Your Family Is All About

Gather your family and start talking about what your family’s mission is. This is your chance to communicate with your children about your values and hear what they want their family to be like. The easiest way to get ideas going for your mission statement is to ask questions that will foster a great discussion. Try these: • What kind of family do we want to be? • What kinds of things do we want to do?

• What kind of feeling do we want to have in our home? • What kind of home would you like to invite your friends to? • What makes you want to come home? • What do we want to be remembered by? • What kind of relationships do we want to have with one another? • What things are truly important to us as a family? • How can we contribute to society as a family and become more service-oriented?

STEP 2:

Make a List of Your Family’s Core Values

Jim Collins says, “A core value is something so central you would say, ‘Even if it’s harmful to us, we would still hold on to this value. Even if we had to pay penalties, even if we had to punish our children for violating it, even if we had to deny them something that would bring them pleasure, we would still hold to it.’”

14

The Grand Season family

September 2018

www.grandseasonfamily.com

MISSION? STEP 3:

Think of Phrases that Capture What Your Family Is All About

In addition to coming up with a list of values and principles that guide your family, brainstorm a list of phrases that really capture the goals and mission of your family. One family chose, “May your first word be adventure and your last word love,” as one of their catchphrases.

STEP 4:

Write Your Family Mission Statement

Once you have your list of big ideas, it’s time to synthesize them into a single mission statement. Don’t expect to crank it out in a single sitting. Remember, mission statements work best if they’re kept short.

Here are some examples:

Our family mission: To love each other… To help each other… To believe in each other… To wisely use our time, talents, and resources to bless others… To worship together… Forever.

Our family mission:

May our first word be adventure and our last word be love. We live lives of passion. We dream undreamable dreams. We are travelers not tourists. We help others to fly. We love to learn. We don’t like dilemmas, we like solutions. We push through. We believe! We know it’s okay to make mistakes. We bring people together. We are joy, rapture, yay!

CLEAR THE CLUTTER

TIPS FOR A CLUTTER FREE SPACE by Courtney Greger Fall is the time to restart and regroup. It’s perfect to get your world back in shape after summer and before the holidays hit. Here are 5 steps to successfully finding that creative space again. Start with one room at a time and use these tips to get your space in tip top shape. Begin your process by sorting through those piles. Create a box for keep, sell, donate, and toss!

KEEP what you use daily and make

sure these items are easily accessible and organized. These items should be kept in drawers or cabinets where you can find them easily.

SELL OR DONATE while purg-

ing closets, desk tops or cabinets, save items in a box that you have outgrown or not using. Make it fun selling these items for charity, a vacation or

something special you are saving for. Great places to sell those finds are: Ebay, Craigslist, OFFER UP, or even the Facebook Marketplace. What you don’t sell, take to Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity, or local schools to donate.

TOSS broken items, items with

missing pieces, or things that have expired. Get rid of the trash—it’s trash getting in your way!

STORE it properly. Once you have

purged the areas of your home get those valuables into good storage. Clear boxes are great for large items so you can see the contents. Store important papers and bills in file folders in filing cabinets. Large baskets help to organize linens and blankets, large storage bins are great for children toys, and smaller organizers work great for office supplies, jewelry and cosmetics.

ORGANIZE. Every home needs a

command central area. This is where the calendar of events is kept and a large Memo board to keep all loose papers. The calendar is the perfect place to write down upcoming events and deadlines. The memo

For Advertising Information Call (623) 594-1630

board allows you to organize papers where you can see them. It’s a great place to put invitations, kid’s projects, emergency contacts, anything that is pending in your world. Once the item is taken care of it can be thrown away or filed in the filing cabinet. A hanging file basket in this area is great to have with folders. It is great to label one folder for each person that lives in your home. Then, all of the lose papers that that person needs can be kept there until they can be filed away. Create an IN/ OUT box for mail and bills. Finally, hang wall hooks at all entrances for backpacks, keys, hats, handbags, and whatever else you grab and leave the house with. Clearing out the clutter, and getting everything in its place will allow you to breathe and concentrate on things other than the piles accumulating in your home.

MONEY

SAVE TODAY

Creative ways to save money

Are you looking for ways to save money, but are at a loss as to where to start? Try some of these ideas to cut your costs and enhance your budget.

1. Start couponing.

You can save a ton of money just by showing a coupon to the cashier. Just be sure you’re using coupons for products you already buy.

2. Cut the cable.

Welcome to this millennium, where you can watch most of your favorite shows online.

3. Stop going out to eat.

Going to a restaurant or hitting up the drivethru is so much easier than cooking at home. But while you’re enjoying the freedom of not having to cook, your purse is in a pinch. For a creative way to socialize and share a meal, have friends over for taco night instead of meeting up at a restaurant.

4. Plan your grocery trips.

Make a list and stick to it! If impulse items always end up in your cart, try ordering your groceries online and then picking them up curbside at the store.

5. Avoid expensive hobbies.

Do you really have $200 a month to spend on golf?

6. Ditch the gym membership.

You can still go for a run outside— for free.

7. Sell items on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.

One person’s trash is another person’s treasure. Dig through your kids’ rooms and the abyss of your closet to find things you can part with to make some quick cash.

8. Start a side gig.

Starting your own business has never been easier! Do you have a knack for making things? Sell your product online! Animal lover? Take up dog walking or pet sitting. 20

TRIVIA

You celebrate their wins, you mourn their losses, but how much do you actually know about Arizona’s NFL team? While they currently call Glendale home, the team has gone through a lot of changes over the years. Nail down these facts—and root hard each season—and you can call yourself a true fan.

22

DID YOU KNOW?

3. OLD AS DIRT Originally called the Morgan Athletic Club, the Arizona Cardinals were founded in 1898, making them the oldest continuously running professional football team in the United States.

1. CARDINAL MIGRATION The team started in Chicago before moving to St. Louis in 1960. The team stayed there for 28 years before relocating to Arizona in a handshake deal. Since 1988, the team has resided in the Grand Canyon State.

4. AND NONE FOR PHOENIX While they originally moved to Arizona as the Phoenix Cardinals, the team has never played a game in the city proper. Their original home was Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe before they moved to their current stadium in Glendale.

2. FIFTY SHADES OF MAROON The Cardinals get their namesake and team color from original owner Chris O’Brien, who bought used jerseys from the University of Chicago for the boys. He described their faded red color as “Cardinal Red.”

5. NUMBER FORTY The team retired player No. 40 in memory of Pat Tillman, who played for the team from 1998 to 2002. A largely respected hero in the community, Tillman enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served in Afghanistan and was killed in combat.

ninth in receiving yards and eighth in receiving touchdowns. 10. MEN OF MANY TITLES The Cardinals have a number of nicknames including Bird Gang, Cardiac Cards, Red Sea and quite simply, the Cards.

7. A MANSION FIT FOR KINGS The team’s University of Phoenix Stadium cost $455 million to build and can expand to seat 72,400 fans. 8. BIG RED The team’s mascot is the fiery red cardinal, Big Red, who “hatched” in 1998. Big Red is 6’4” and has a 7-foot wing span. 9. FOR THE RECORD Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald is moving up in the NFL record books in several categories, including third all-time in receptions,

TALK

GREAT QUESTIONS

Would you want to spend a week with someone of the opposite sex? Someone very old? Beautiful? Ugly? Or, severely handicapped? If so, which one would most intrigue you?

Start a conversation

Do you ever get tired of conversations that end with one-word answers? If so, use these questions to get to know someone better. If you had to be obsessed with money, sex, sports, religion, or food, which one would you choose?

If you could gain any one ability or quality you admire in someone else what would you choose?

If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about any one thing about yourself, life, the future, or anything else, what would you want to know, and why? Have your character and humanity been forged by pleasure and success or by pain and disappointment?

If you could have free, unlimited service for 5 years from an extremely good cook, chauffeur, housekeeper, masseuse, or personal secretary, which would you choose?

Ignoring all financial considerations, would you rather spend the next 5 years confined in New York City, or a beautiful, isolated town on the California coast?

Would you rather be very successful professionally with only a tolerable private life, or have a great private life but an uninspiring professional one?

If you wanted to take a new and uncertain path in your life, but your friends really didn’t want you to, would you go ahead against their wishes if you thought it was right for you?

Would you enjoy a month of solitude, all alone in an isolated, beautiful natural setting with food and shelter provided?

If you were to die tonight with no opportunity to communicate with anyone what would you most regret having not told someone? What good might come out of telling them now?

To be financially secure, do you work harder at anticipating risks so you can avoid them, or at building a cushion so you can withstand the unexpected? Which do you think might work better and why?

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

JOURNAL YOUR JOURNEY Transform your life

Journaling is a powerful tool you may have heard about, but never have tried. The power in journaling rests in the fact it’s not only where you record your insights and inspiration—but it’s where those insights become solidified and real. Journaling is a place where you can start thinking deeply about your insights and ideas, and where you strategize and plan the execution of those insights and ideas.

If you’re unsure as to where to start journaling, consider:

Before you start writing in your journal, you’ll want to get your mind in the right place. That’s why taking 30 minutes to get out of your regular environment and preparing yourself mentally is important. While preparing yourself, you may read or listen to some inspiring content. You may do a workout. When journaling, you’ll want to write from a position of confidence, resolve, hope and expectation. This mental context will determine the quality and depth of the ideas and emotions you experience while you write.

Being radically honest about what’s going on in your world.

Without this mental preparation, your journaling may not produce the results you hope to achieve. Consider this quote from Charles Haanel, “No matter what the difficulty is, no matter where it is, no matter who is affected, you have no patient but yourself; you have nothing to do but convince yourself of the truth which you desire to see manifest.”

These could be framed as your life vision, your three to fiveyear goals, or goals for the next three to 12 months. A key component of writing big-picture is that it reconnects you with your “why.” It’s very easy to lose sight of your why with the busyness of life.

Starting with gratitude and appreciation for your life.

Take time to reflect on and write about the details of your life and relationships. Write about the people who matter. Write about how far you’ve come. Write specifics about what is happening, and what has happened. Recording your history is a crucial component of journal writing.

After you’ve just expressed gratitude and appreciation for the brilliance (and struggles) in your life—be honest about where you’re not showing up. Commit to making specific changes. Write down the key changes you need to make to achieve your dreams and ideals. While writing about the things you need to change, openly write about the frustrations and difficulties that have led you to where you are. Be honest and vulnerable with yourself. The purpose of this writing is for you to get clarity, and to re-establish your priorities and focus.

Writing about your big picture dreams.

Journaling is a habit that can provide clarity and transform your life. Try it for 15 minutes a day, and see how your future unfolds!
