NOTE
It’s hard to believe my kids are back in school! We have enjoyed a great summer together, but I must admit it went by faster than I wanted it to. My oldest son, Logan, is a senior and I’m having a hard time grasping that it’s his last year of high school. To top things off, my youngest is starting high school. As you can imagine, over the last several weeks, my mind has been racing with thoughts about if they’re prepared to launch into the next stage of life. The theme of this month’s issue of the The Grand Season Family is LAUNCH. This theme has been very evident in my personal life lately. This summer our conversations have centered on setting and achieving goals. A quote from Oprah hit me hard, and now is written on our chalkboard in the hall. “The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams.” I don’t know about you, but this quote resonates with me. I want my sons to live a life of adventure. I want them to understand that it is through hard work, determination and drive that dreams become reality. As teenagers sometimes do, my kids asked me what I was
doing to live my own adventure. Of course, my response had something to do with launching them is enough of an adventure at this point in my life. With that question in mind, I want to ask you, “What are you doing to launch your dreams and live your adventure?” Hopefully, some of the articles in this month’s The Grand Season Family will help you as you launch your family into the next season of life, but will also encourage you to think about what you need to do to live the life you dream about. Thank you for your support of The Grand Season Family and for the businesses that make our publication possible.

YOU
DISCOVER YOUR WORLD The time is now
You know you’re here for big things, right? You have a difference to make and a purpose to live. Whatever you like to call it—personal growth, personal development or finding yourself—this journey is you exploring and developing who you truly are. And it can look however you want! The key is to put yourself into situations that will trigger that exploration and development. To get started on your journey explore these ideas:
1. Know yourself
Self-knowledge is not just about knowing your likes and dislikes, it’s about knowing who you truly are as a person—how you look at life and how you interact with others. What fires you up? What leaves you shaking? What gets your heart pumping? A person who knows who they are shines with confidence.
2. Find beautiful people
Find people that make you see the world in a new way. People that do extraordinary things. People that exude the qualities you’d love have to rub off on you; kindness, compassion, bravery, drive. People that have a story to tell, gifts to share and lessons to teach.
3. “Three good things” practice
Each day, write down three good things that happened throughout your day, or three things you are thankful for. It can be as simple as “I’m thankful for a warm sunny day today.”
6. Read
Reading connects you with a person that may have lived decades, or even hundreds of years before you were born. It gives you insight into another world and perspective. And it grows you in the easiest way possible, all from the comfort of your favorite chair.
7. Laugh
Embrace a lighthearted sense of humor; spend the day with a friend that shares the same crazy sense of humor as you, watch stand-up comedy online or read a funny article.
8. Make someone’s day
Whether it’s for a stranger, a friend, or your family—do something to brighten someone’s day. It can be as simple as a genuine compliment, or an unexpected and thoughtful gift. Seeing the effect of your kindness toward others will have a lasting impact on your personal growth.
4. Meet new people
The easiest way to meet someone new is to offer a compliment and ask an open ended question or just flat out say something like “Hi! I see you here quite a bit, so thought I’d say hello.”
5. Go outside
Take time out each day to get some fresh air, walk through a beautiful park or garden, or just watch the clouds. It’s a mini escape, and plants you firmly in the “real world,” as opposed to the virtual world. Watch the stars, walk through a forest or toast marshmallows over a bonfire. The world is spectacular, and enjoying it is energizing.

KIDS
START YOUR ENGINES Transition tips from summer to school
It may be hard to believe, but it’s time for school. For most families, this news means it’s time to adjust from late nights and lazy mornings to starting a daily routine so everyone can get to school on time. Try some of these tips to get you and your kids prepared for school.
1. Take some time to read with your kids. 2. Enjoy school shopping with your child and involve them by giving them choices. 3. Prepare yourself for early mornings and prepare what you can the night before. Being ready for a school morning is the best thing that you can do to get your family off to a great start! 4. Celebrate back to school with a party! 5. If you are homeschooling, build up your supplies as you start the new year. Stock up on pencils, markers, crayons, highlighters and more! 6. Take time to prepare your anxious children for school. Take a tour of the school, meet the teacher and practice pick up and drop off to get started in your preparation. 7. Create a homework station for your children. 8. Use hooks for each child’s book bag to keep things organized. 9. Mix up the lunches this year and keep it simple. (See page 30 for ideas) 10. Organize your child’s clothes for the entire week. Pick every outfit out on Sunday afternoon and lay them out or hang them up for the week. 11. Start your child’s day out right with a great meal! 12. Plan out some easy, healthy after school snacks to fill your kids just enough until dinnertime. 13. Back to school means sicknesses are on their way. Find ways to cut down on sickness! Make sure your kids are getting 8 hours of sleep a night. 14. The morning of the first day, have a special gift for your child. It doesn’t have to be fancy. 15. Try lunch box notes to brighten your child’s day. 16. Be sure to use your last week before the kids go to school to spend some muchneeded one on one time with the kids.

LOVE
ENGAGE
Your marriage matters!
r
Have you noticed that when you’re happy in your relationship with your spouse, you tend to be happier with your job, kids, social life and everything else life throws your way? The reason is when you start making your marriage a priority, you begin to develop a “We’re in this together!” attitude and life in general just seems easier. Try these great ways to cultivate a stronger connection in your marriage.
Wake up early
Set your alarm 10 minutes before you need to get up to spend some quality time with your spouse. Have a cup of coffee together, discuss the morning news or simply stay in bed and cuddle. Those 10 minutes of alone time in the morning will set the tone for your day.
Kiss instead of peck
You and your husband are probably in the habit of pecking goodbye each morning before work and pecking once again when you see each other in the evening. Tonight, when your husband comes home, surprise him with a long, passionate kiss.
Give your spouse your “best”
Let’s face it, by the end of the day you’re exhausted! You’ve given your all to your kids, your job, your chores and dinner, but what about your spouse? Consciously make an effort to give your “best” to each other every day.
14
The Grand Season family
August 2018
Shower
Taking a shower with your spouse is a great way to get some alone time. It doesn’t have to lead to sex and it doesn’t have to be planned, just hop in!
Play
Make it a priority to continue having fun with your spouse. Play board games over a bottle of wine, have a movie night with root beer floats or drive around neighborhoods searching for your dream home. Keep your relationship fun and lighthearted—it will help you enjoy each other more!
Say “I love you”
Love is a choice, a decision and a commitment. You’re not going to feel head-over-heels in love with your spouse every day, but by telling your spouse you love him daily, you’re reminding the both of you that it’s a conscious decision that you’re choosing to make. Write it on your bathroom mirror, post it on social media—better yet, just say it! www.grandseasonfamily.com
TALK
REKINDLE THAT SPARK Learn something new
Do you and your spouse talk anymore? In marriage, our conversations often stop being about growing together, and become more about what’s going on with work, kids and the family. When you have time together, pull some of these questions out. Going through these questions will help you make new memories while sharing some laughs. Who knows, you might even learn something new about your spouse!
• Would you rather be feared by all or loved by all? • What is the nicest thing I have done for you recently? • What book has had the most impact on your life? • What would you refuse to do for $1 million? • Would you rather have an unlimited international first class ticket or never have to pay for food at restaurants? • What profession have you always admired? • What scares you about aging? • Do you think we spend enough time together? • What is something you would like us to do to invest in our marriage this year? • Name 5 things you’re thankful for. • How would you spend your time if the electricity went out for 24 hours? • Describe your idea of a perfect date!
r
• If you had to change your first name, what would you pick and why? • What do you wish you could spend more of your time doing? • What is your favorite memory of our dating years? • What’s the worst piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
• What talent do you really wish you had? • What is something you did not want to do at all that turned out to be a terrific experience? • What do you love about your personality? • What TV sitcom best portrays our lives? • In what ways has our relationship changed you? • What ideas do you have about how we could improve the ‘couple time’ we spend together? • What are three things that I do that you couldn’t live without? • What has required the most courage of you in your life so far? • What’s good about how we are living our life right now? • What compliment would you really like to hear from me? • What’s your secret sexual fantasy?

DORM DREAMS
Home away from home
Dorm rooms can be a stylish blend of your personality combined with function, so get an “A” on your living space with these easy tips.
Pick your color
Sticking with a one-color theme will unify your purchases and create a calm, inviting space. Popular choices now include navy blue, soft pink, aqua blue and corals. Don’t like these, then pick your favorite color and blend it with white accessories.
Maximize storage
Raise that bed! Under bed storage is essential so take a wrench and screwdriver to move that bed up higher. Purchase organizers in your color theme-hanging shoe organizers, 3 drawer carts, 12” fabric boxes, large totes, and a laundry basket. These are all needed to get your space clear of clutter.
Get creative
Repurpose what you already have. Paint old boxes, jars and office supplies in your color theme. A can of spray paint can make that old office stapler look savvy again. Pasta sauce jars recycled, are great places to store pencils and pens and can be jazzed up with ribbon or paint.
Bargain shop
Google search the best deals on bedding in your color theme. You will need extra-long twin mattress cover and pad, duvet cover (because you can wash this) comforter, 2 sheet sets, towels and pillows. MONEY
FLIGHT PLAN
The good news is that it’s not too late to take control of your financial future. Experts suggest considering the following “retirement checklist” to help assess whether your financial foundation can support your desired lifestyle through your life span:
Determine your destination
Have you prepared for your future? Now that summer is slipping away, and the holidays are a couple of months away, it’s time to start thinking about what you want for your financial future. While retirement may not be looming in the distance, the earlier you begin to plan, the more likely your dreams will materialize. Imagine preparing for a 30-year vacation. As life expectancy increases, that’s essentially what retirement could be for many Americans. Their financial strategy has to accommodate routine expenses like food and shelter, healthcare costs, lifestyle needs and perhaps even a legacy for loved ones or favorite philanthropy.
20
Yet, research shows that when it comes to retirement planning, many Americans are flying blind. Studies show not having sufficient savings to retire comfortably is a leading financial fear, since more than one-third of adults don’t know how much income they need to retire. The lack of confidence in financial preparedness may explain why Americans are increasingly delaying retirement involuntarily. The Grand Season family
August 2018
Like an actual vacation, what you need to take depends on where you’re going and how long you’re planning to stay. So, if your goal is to retire as early as possible and lead a life of leisure without working for supplemental income, you’ll likely need more resources than if you choose to remain in the workforce as long as possible.
Discuss goals with your spouse
If you’re retiring with your spouse, it’s essential to ensure your retirement expectations and priorities are aligned. However, maintaining open and ongoing communication about financial matters may be harder than it sounds. Research shows that Americans prefer discussing death and intimacy over money.
Consult an expert
While the internet has empowered us to become a nation of DIYers, there are still some areas where professional guidance is valuable, a professional advisor can objectively look at your finances and goals, and devise a strategy to meet immediate and future needs. The benefits of being proactive are clear; research consistently shows that people who are disciplined about financial planning are happier in retirement. www.grandseasonfamily.com

GROWTH
SLUMP BUSTERS Attitude adjustment strategies
Waking up on the wrong side of the day is something that can’t be avoided, but how you handle the rest of the day is in your control. The next time you encounter one of these situations, remind yourself of the solution and put your day back on track.
You wake up feeling terrible
Suggestion: Take some extra time for yourself. When you are stressed or don’t feel well, it’s easy to just try to get through the day. But before you sabotage your entire day, take a few minutes to care for yourself. Take an extra 15 minutes for a hot shower or make time to have coffee with a good friend. Taking care of yourself is the best way you can take care of your family. You’re dreading a looming deadline Suggestion: Get moving.
It’s amazing how it’s so easy to procrastinate when a deadline is looming. Instead of focusing your attention on everything but the task you need to accomplish. Break your project down into smaller pieces, and schedule time in between each
task to take a walk, dance to your favorite song or workout. Moving your body will not only provide you with a great break, it will make your brain more productive. You have a million tasks on your to-do list, and you’re getting frantic Suggestion: Breathe.
As soon as that chaotic feeling takes over your mind, stop what you’re doing and start concentrating on breathing. Deep breathing can reduce anxiety and tension. It also gets more oxygen to your brain, which will help you make better decisions. Also, take a moment to look at your to-do list, and prioritize what really needs to be done in this moment.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

Freeze Dance
Memories from your childhood should remind you this game needs a yard with room for kids to run around. Invite parents to sit in the circle and participate with the kids.
Got a phone and a bunch of busy kids? The objective to this game is to have the kids freeze when the song stops. The kids who don’t stop dancing can keep dancing, but don’t move on to the next round of competition.
Bean Bag Toss
Think of this as cornhole for kids. Find a bunch of soft balls, bean bags, or stuff animals. Set up a target and have the kids toss the object toward the target. The child who makes it closest to the target or in the target wins.
