As the years roll on, the generation that experienced World War II first-hand is leaving us.

Experiencing a story like this, in the visceral way that Jonathan Christenson and the team of Catalyst Theatre bring it to the stage, helps us to travel back and live in that moment, to witness that war from a female perspective and to feel what it means to sacrifice everything for a cause and a country. These are challenging times, with warfare all too real in countries around the globe. A story like this one, told through the beauty of song, bold choreography, and theatrical spectacle, helps us to connect with that reality in a way that leaves space for our personal experience.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT Welcome to the Grand Theatre. The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron (also known as Neutral) peoples and territories associated with various treaties of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapewak. The Attawandaron peoples once settled this region alongside the Algonquin and Haudenosaunee peoples and used this land as their traditional beaver hunting grounds.

In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as Southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area.

Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people.

We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (also known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work, and tell stories together.

A

fter the outbreak of WWII, the Special Operations Executive (SOE) was set up to wage a secret war against Nazi Germany. Its agents were mainly tasked with sabotage and subversion behind enemy lines.

Winston Churchill was instrumental in its creation and he famously ordered the SOE to “set Europe ablaze!” The work of its agents included blowing up trains, bridges and factories, as well as fostering revolt and guerrilla warfare in enemy-occupied countries.

The SOE recruited civilians from all over Europe, Australia, Asia and North America. It was divided into various sections, each one focused on one of the Nazi-occupied countries. F Section was responsible for France and agents recruited for missions there all had to be fluent French-speakers. These recruits completed a gruelling training regime and women and men worked alongside each other. Agents were then parachuted into occupied Europe where they generally worked in small cells to sabotage the Nazi war effort.

The Invisible: Agents of Ungentlemanly Warfare is not about specific events or individuals. In the tradition of much spy fiction, it is inspired by real people and actual historical events, but it is a work of imagination. To my knowledge, there was no “all-female” cell, but my work on The Invisible began with the question, what if there had been?

JONATHAN CHRISTENSON The SOE was a covert organization and even the British parliament was unaware of its existence. It was informally referred to as the “Department of Ungentlemanly Warfare” - in part, because these tactics fell outside the ‘rules’ of conventional warfare. The name takes on an unintentional additional meaning given that the female agents who were recruited by the SOE were the only women who were permitted by the Allies to play a combat role during WWII.

Sarah is an actor/singer of Jamaican heritage. She was born and raised in the Waterloo region and graduate of the University of Waterloo and holds a Bachelor of Arts. She is an alumna of Black Theatre Workshop's Artist Mentorship Program and the Culchahworks Arts Collective. Sarah is so excited to be reprising the role of Maddy and is incredibly grateful to be back to explore in this production with this cast. Jonathan is a director, writer and composer who has spearheaded the creation of twenty-two original Canadian productions, many of which have had an international reach. He has directed at more than 85 theatres across Canada, England, Scotland, Wales, Australia and the United States, including in London's West End and New York's Broadway district.

His work has been recognized with nearly 60 British, Canadian and American awards and nominations. He has also been shortlisted for the Siminovitch Prize in Directing, was named one of “Alberta’s Fifty Most Influential People”

by Venture Magazine, and was chosen as one of Alberta’s one hundred most significant theatre artists of the past one hundred years by Alberta Playwrights Network. He is published in the United States by Playscripts, and in Canada by Playwrights Canada Press, Newest Press and Bayeaux Arts. Jonathan’s productions have also been featured in such magazines as American Theatre, Maclean’s, Canadian Theatre Review, and PRISM International. Jonathan is delighted to be back in London, where he lived as a child, and especially happy to be back at the beautiful Grand Theatre, having been here in 2017 and 2019 with his production of Vigilante.

Michael is very excited to be back behind the mixing console on The Invisible. He has been working as a sound designer, audio technician and composer since 1995. With a passion for collaborative theatre, he has a focus on site specific work and the use of interactive audio and sensor technology to activate non-traditional performance spaces. He is a graduate of the University of Alberta’s BFA in Technical Theatre program.

In the summer you can find Michael mixing at Rainbow Stage in Winnipeg. He currently resides in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

Describe a highlight of your time being in the Student Club: “I love the social aspect of the Student Club!! It's a really great way to see my friends, especially ones from different schools. The actor talk backs are also very interesting and it’s an amazing experience to have such open Q&A’s with professionals.”

In what ways have you applied your exposure to theatre and love of the arts to other areas of your life?

“Exposure to theatre has reminded me to use my art to express myself. For example, I recently designed a fashion line concept for my class based on my identity as a transgender Guyanese woman and the beautiful yet difficult complexities of such an intersection!”

What is a goal for you five years from now?

“Five years from now, I’d love to be graduating from Toronto Metropolitan University’s fashion program and prepare to take a 2 year postbaccalaureate in urban design!!”

For The Grand Theatre: Chariots of Fire, GROW. Bretta Gerecke is a Lighting, Set, Costume and Projection designer for Theatre, Circus, Opera, Film and Installation Art. She is the resident designer at Catalyst Theatre where she co-creates and tours new work across North America, the UK and Australia. She is the recipient of over 25 awards in addition to Avenue Magazine’s Top 40 under 40, Global Television’s Woman of Vision, IPL Best Emerging Artist, the Lucille Lortel Award (Best Costume Design, Off Broadway). She recently represented Canada in Prague at the Scenography Quadrennial and her costume designs were exhibited in Moscow, Beijing, and Taipei. Bretta lives in London (UK) she is a marathon runner and an Archaeological Illustrator.

Past experience includes stints at Universal Beijing Resort, the Center Theatre Group in L.A, and a veritable smorgasbord of summerstocks, regional theatres, dance incubators, circus tours, opera festivals, cruise ships, and the kinds of gigs where you have to zip tie lights to trees.

An Historic Gift On March 9, 2017, the Grand Theatre announced an historic donation from Helen and Andy Spriet.

The philanthropic leaders in London committed $1,000,000 to support the work of the theatre.

This donation marks the largest individual gift in Grand Theatre history and in the arts community in London.

In recognition of this investment, the Grand Theatre main stage was renamed the Spriet Stage.
