The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional territories of the Original storytellers and caretakers of this land, and of the Nations, both settler and Indigenous, who continue to uphold the various treaties of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapéewak.
In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as Southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area.
Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people, and affirm our commitment to welcoming these communities to the Grand Theatre, while working to remove barriers to access and participation.
We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (colonially known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work, share, and tell stories together.

The Importance of Being Earnest is considered by many to be Oscar Wilde’s greatest dramatic achievement. It is undeniable that the play’s biting wit and social commentary remain relevant today, and that as a source of entertainment it has stood the test of time. I felt that if we were going to bring this play to our audiences at the Grand, we wanted to bring a bold idea to it. Enter Director Alistair Newton.
Alistair has been a friend of mine since we were both Intern Directors at the Shaw Festival in 2014. Having known him now for more than a decade, I have experienced his work as thoughtful and intelligent, aesthetically bold in a way that is deeply rooted in the text, and original in its interpretation. He brings vigour and joy to his work in a way that is relentless in its pursuit of vision, while never getting in the way of the story that is written.
What Alistair proposed to me was clear in its artistic goals and captivating in its cultural commentary. It felt true to the script, and like a treasured gift inviting us to experience the depth of Oscar Wilde from an insider’s perspective. When we asked Alistair to describe this play in three words he said “delightful, subversive, and surprising.” That’s exactly how I like my theatre!
We at the Grand are incredibly proud of our “London Made” identity. That is absolutely, unequivocally true for every show we put on our stage. But occasionally shows are programmed that ask for the world from our teams, and this is one of these shows. The design of this show is exquisite, and the worldcalibre artistry required to execute this vision is all taking place in our Grand shops, with craftspeople and artists based right here in London realizing all of that beauty.

In only the last few years, The Importance of Being Earnest has been revived by the Shaw Festival, Theatre Calgary, and Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre, and it will open at Stratford Festival later this year. Seeing that the play made its debut at London’s St. James’s Theatre on Valentine’s Day in 1895, the question must be asked: what is it about this particular play that seems to so deeply engage both theatre artists and audiences alike at our current moment? Perhaps the answer lies in Wilde’s magnificent balancing act of populism and subversion.
When Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde began writing what many would consider to be not only his, but one of the great masterpieces of English comic theatre, he was on holiday in the seaside town of Worthing. His companions were sometimes his wife Constance and their two children, and sometimes his tempestuous lover, the minor poet (and evil twink) Lord Alfred Douglas. Under these circumstances Wilde composed a plot centred on two men who construct different methods by which they can escape from under the oppression of their respective societal expectations. Once free of the moral strictures of either town or country life, one might be able to run away to behave in a perfectly scandalous (and thoroughly liberating) manner.
It seems to me that productions of The Importance are usually accompanied by associations—heavy curtains, fussy furniture, lace doilies—which are drawn more from our culture’s received ideas about the late Victorian period than from an aesthetic universe whose dramatic language included melodrama and the transgressive queerness of the music hall. In fact, Wilde’s plays have the potential to illuminate the 19th Century in ways that challenge many of these preconceptions, full as they are of secret codes, hidden symbols, double entendres, and perhaps above all, delightful paradoxes.
For this production, I have tried to stay true to Wilde in both his populism and his subversion; as Gilbert says to Ernest in Wilde’s The Critic As Artist, “the one duty we owe to history is to rewrite it.”

Oscar Wilde (b. 1854 – d. 1900) was an Irish author, poet, and playwright—and one of the most popular and influential artists of the Victorian Era. He moved in the most fashionable circles of London, England and is closely tied to the Aesthetic Movement, which championed “art for art’s sake” (appearance over function) and continues to be an icon of wit, design, and sophistication.
Wilde is known for his comic masterpieces including The Importance of Being Earnest, of course, as well as his only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. His works continue to fill theatres and delight audiences around the world.
The Importance has been translated into dozens of languages and has been adapted across each performance form— as an opera, a musical, for radio, and then television and film.
The Grand Theatre’s production of The Importance of Being Earnest features a new role—Lady Stella Clinton, the real-life 19th Century queer trailblazer, is an addition by Director Alistair Newton. Ernest Bolton lived and loved as Lady Stella, and is known in particular for attending a performance at London, UK’s Strand Theatre in women’s evening wear in 1869. For this and other surveilled behaviour, she was arrested and criminally charged with conspiracy to commit a felony—and found not guilty, greeted with loud cheers and bravo’s from the gallery. Twenty-five years later in 1895, The Importance of Being Earnest opened at what is thought to be the peak of Wilde’s career. Wilde is now known, and perhaps was known then as well, for his relationships with men which were illegal at the time, resulting in conviction and time served. Upon release, he fled to France and lived out the final two years of his life in near anonymity.

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THE TD EMERGING TALENT PROGRAM?
Being able to transfer between the departments of Props and Scenic Art was a new experience for me. There are certain skills that are specific to each department, and I appreciate the opportunity to work in both shops so I can broaden my skillset.
WHAT ARE THREE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PROGRAM SO FAR, FOR YOU?
Due to this being a mentorship program, you have the ability to ask lots of questions in a learning environment. You are given the chance to develop as an artist in a welcoming atmosphere, which is very helpful for developing professional skills. The opportunity to learn different techniques is another highlight. I got to experience new things such as texturing scenery and upholstering furniture. I have also seen how to properly run a calm, organized shop. There is also the opportunity to see the operations of a large regional theatre. You can see the intricacies of the different departments and how important it is that everyone can work together to make the creative vision come to life.
WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR YOUR THEATRE CAREER?
I hope to work at a variety of theatres throughout Ontario and possibly do projects out of province one day. I’m open to work in both props and scenic art. I believe that gaining experience working with multiple artists will help me become a better artist overall. Then I will be able to show someone else what I have learned and implement the skills I have accumulated into running a shop. I also have some friends in the industry that I haven’t collaborated with yet, and I would like to work with them on a production in the future.
WHY DID THE TD EMERGING TALENT PROGRAM SPEAK TO YOU?
The program stood out to me for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it was for a full season, so there was more time to spend at the shops and you can work on multiple productions which I find helpful because you can experience a nice variety of work and challenges that come with different shows. Secondly, it was a “learn-by-doing” position. You are supported by mentors who have a lot of experience in their fields. The goal for the position is to cultivate knowledge and that is exactly how I want to grow as a professional.
