The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional territories of the Original storytellers and caretakers of this land, and of the Nations, both settler and Indigenous, who continue to uphold the various treaties of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapéewak. In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as Southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area. Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people, and affirm our commitment to welcoming these communities to the Grand Theatre, while working to remove barriers to access and participation. We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (colonially known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work, share, and tell stories together. WELCOME My favourite genre of theatre is a style I would house under the term ‘magic realism’. In the words of Roundabout Theatre Company, who staged the World Premiere of Primary Trust in 2023, this genre allows “fantasy to coexist with realism, so that boundaries are erased and neither reality nor fantasy is subordinate to the other.” In other words, a world that feels like ours – that looks like reality – can subvert, and suddenly we realize these characters are not bound by the laws of physics or time but rather are living inside an active idea. A mentor of mine once said that theatre is at its best when the creators intentionally leave chunks out – when there is a requirement for the audience to lean in and share their imagination with the theatre-makers in order to fully round out the world they are experiencing. I agree with that wholeheartedly and I think that’s one of the reasons that watching magic realism live onstage is so transformative – each of us has to bring a bit of ourselves to it to complete the experience. When I read Primary Trust, I was instantly in love. I know very well these half-forgotten cities and have lived closely with people for whom the act of existence is a struggle. And yet, I believe this play is ultimately a story of kindness. It is a story of loneliness, but the counterpoint to that is people reaching out again and again to do their best to offer a hand to someone and lift them up. In an interview with Anna Montagner, playwright Katori Hall said, “There were times when I’ve sort of done my best thinking about life’s biggest questions in places that wouldn’t encourage that. I don’t go to church, but I think there have been times in Target or at a Chili’s restaurant when I’ve really pondered my existence in a profound way. And there’s something about seemingly innocuous environments that can provoke a lot of feeling.” I take a lot of joy from that. Ordinary places
that can become sources of deep emotion. In a world that can feel lonely, this idea offers the spark of possibility. I hope this play invites you to explore that possibility. RACHEL PEAKE

Playwright Feature The following is excerpted from an interview with Eboni Booth, published by Roundabout Theatre Company where Primary Trust had its World Premiere in 2023.

WHAT IS YOUR THEATRE ORIGIN STORY?
When I was a kid, maybe nine or 10, my mom saw an ad in the local newspaper— Lehman College was having auditions for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. And that was sort of my first real introduction to doing a play. I had the experience of a lot of people coming together in a short amount of time trying to make something, and it really lit me up. I think that’s what sort of stuck with me most, and probably what I hang onto now with theater-making: that sense of community and the togetherness of the group effort to make something that wasn't there before.
HOW DID PLAYWRITING BECOME A PART OF YOUR CAREER?
Workshops and readings teach you so much about how stories get put together and how worlds come alive. And I’d always been a big reader, so writing scripts became a way to stitch together these disparate parts of myself. I wrote one play, and it wasn’t good at all. And I kept going. And little by little I got closer to what it was that I wanted to say. When I started writing things that were related to what I like to watch and read, when I started writing about the stuff that keeps me up at night, that’s when I started finding my voice.
WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR PRIMARY TRUST?
I saw a lot of regulars as a bartender. I worked at places where we had some people who came in every night of the week, every day of the year. I had a curiosity about their lives. I think I’m drawn to stories of loneliness and people who are trying to do battle, however quietly, with the feeling of being isolated. So it wasn’t conscious, but I think writing Primary Trust was my way to better understand moments in my life where I felt very alone and very sad and often very drunk. Times when I wanted to connect with people but wasn't completely sure how to go about it.

Third Spaces Third spaces disrupt the cycle of home, work (or school), then home again. Third spaces take us away from our to-do lists and the noise of daily life. In a third space, we can just be. More than that, we can connect, we can explore, we can experience, we can even makebelieve. Book stores – like Yellowed Pages in Primary Trust – play this important role for many of us. Whether it’s browsing the shelves, settling in for a read, or joining a rousing Book Club debate. Others find it in a coffee or donut shop, local pub, or – in Kenneth’s case – a tiki hut called Wally’s. A third space might be a public park, library, concert hall, place of worship, or the theatre. Maybe it’s a knitting circle at your favourite café, or trivia night at a nearby brewery. Maybe it’s a local walking or running group. What matters is finding a place to put home and work aside, a place that meets you with whatever connection, playfulness, and selfexpression mean to you. Each time you join us at the Grand – in the red velvet seats of the Spriet Stage, in the Auburn for a workshop or performance, or in the Drewlo Lounge for a post-show talk – you are making space for that important third dimension of your life. And it means the world to us when you do.

As a director, I travel across the country and find myself in new cities throughout the year. Every city has its own brand of unique coffee shops that have delicious pastries to try and a local pub with local beer on tap! Learning and getting to know these “third spaces” makes me feel like I’m part of that city and I look forward to revisiting them when I return! KHADIJAH ROBERTS-ABDULLAH – CORINNA
It's OK Studios – a for BIPOC by BIPOC community hub and co-working space. The Toronto Reference Library – the resources go beyond what can be found on their shelves. It's thanks to a grant writing workshop I took there years ago, that I felt equipped to write my very first grant application. Office Coffee on Bathurst, and Space Unltd., the event space behind it – run by the coolest, kindest people, Brendan Philip and Leila Medina. Cities need spaces like these. EMMA JO CONLIN – ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER
For a while, I would go to the AGO in Toronto to crochet, it was nice to create while I was around art. Third Spaces have become less present in my life since the pandemic. It is something I miss and would love to integrate back into my routine. Lately it feels that my friend's houses have become third spaces to each other - a space to exist together.
