I don’t remember my first time reading a Jane Austen novel – they feel like stories I have somehow always known. I have watched many stage and film adaptations, and my love of rom coms has brought me to so many stories that have Austen at their root: Bridget Jones’ Diary, Clueless, You’ve Got Mail to name just a few. I have a deep appreciation for Bridgerton and similar shows that both take us back in time and, unabashedly, put a stamp of the modern era on the world we are looking back on. In watching all of that, I have built some strong opinions!
The thing Austen gets very right, and that defines her ability to last through time, is the way she sets humour alongside social commentary. Her version of feminism is to build strong and nuanced female characters who are flawed and, in that, fully capable and fully human. She uses her perspective and humour to help us see society in a frank way. Often in modern adaptations that humour gets diluted in “oldy timey” acting or language. But not in Kate Hamill’s adaptation!
Kate Hamill mirrors Jane Austen’s humour and updates it for the 21st century. After your viewing, I invite you to go back to the original Austen (if you don’t have a copy at home, the text is available online) and look again at the way she wrote. I hope you will find, as I do, that Hamill has beautifully captured her voice
and brought it forward to our modern times while adding her own flavour and twist. It ends up feeling like the hands of these two writers are reaching together through time. When I watch a production of Kate Hamill’s work, I see these Austen women two hundred years ago and I feel what they may have felt, I see how they are constrained, and I know them to be people just like me and my friends today. That joining across time feels like a gift, and like a revelation.
We can’t help but bring our modern sensibilities to the watching of anything, and Rebecca Northan’s production does that with such a wink, such a sense of play, that it breathes new life into a story we thought we knew; tossing aside the concept of gender constructs, while at the same time shining a spotlight on the absurdity and rigidity surrounding them.
As Kate Hamill says in her introduction to another of her plays, Sense and Sensibility: “Have fun — Jane Austen would approve.”
RACHEL PEAKE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
We’re so glad you’re here.
The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional territories of the Original storytellers and caretakers of this land, and of the Nations, both settler and Indigenous, who continue to uphold the various treaties of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapéewak.
In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as Southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area.
Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people, and affirm our commitment to welcoming these communities to the Grand Theatre, while working to remove barriers to access and participation.
We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (colonially known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work, share, and tell stories together.

I did not grow up with Jane Austen. I was more of a Brontë / Mary Shelley gal. Something about the darker aspects of human nature: jealousy, hatred, revenge, social injustice and emotional turmoil spoke more directly to my roiling inneradolescent sensibilities. I was a bullied outsider for most of my teens, so Jane Austen's preoccupation with marriage, family, social status and expectations left me rolling my eyes. In this production, I identify far more with Mary than with Lizzy. I don't know Austen the way so many of my friends do, but I do know comedy - so the invitation to direct Pride and Prejudice has afforded me the opportunity to try to better understand those Austen fans that left me so baffled in my youth.
Starting with BBC radio in 1924, Pride and Prejudice has had no less than seventeen adaptations for film, television, and stage, with the novel having sold over 20 million copies worldwide. To suggest that Jane Austen's second novel has enjoyed success is an understatement. Today we have countless blogs dedicated to the enduring love story between Lizzy and Mr. Darcy, fanfiction sites overflowing with speculative prose, Jane Austen cosplayers, and a 12 foot fibreglass statue of Colin Firth in 'that wet shirt' which lives permanently in Lyme Park in the Northwest of England. And in case, for a moment, you thought surely all of this fuss must be waning by now, the original wet shirt worn by Colin Firth in that spontaneous-dip-in-theriver scene, was sold at auction in March of 2024 for £26,000!
Kate Hammill's decision to adapt Pride and Prejudice though, comes not out of a pursuit of popularity, but out of a desire to see more women on stage, in classic
roles, also being hilarious. Written for herself, and her group of talented, funny friends to perform in New York, Kate was looking to create a 'fresh new take that is surprising, and allows the audience to see an old story in a new way.' Cross-casting & double casting allows for a heightened level of fun that is only possible in live theatre, and her script clearly requests a company of actors that is comprised of a minimum of 50% women (still a significant ask, even in 2025) - I am happy to say that our production clocks in at 75% female representation on stage, and 88% representation on the Creative Team!
Above all though, Kate's adaptation is as funny as they come - no small feat when dealing in classic literature that may invoke the English-essay-hangovers that continue to haunt some of us. In the hands of this incredible, all-Canadian, deeply talented, frighteningly hilarious group of Artists, I hope you will rediscover an old-chestnut that still has a whole lot to say about the pit-falls of having too much pride, or looking at the world through a prejudiced lens, all while doling out every manner of laughs.
I have had the joy of witnessing the unfolding of love and laughter throughout our rehearsal process. I hope this production will touch your heart, and make your sides ache, and your eyes water as much as it has done mine. To quote Lizzy, "There are few people whom I really love, and still fewer of whom I think well."
- this cast, these Artists, these dear, dear friends both old and new, are humans I think so well of, and love so much, I feel certain you will feel the same by the time they take their bows.
REBECCA NORTHAN DIRECTOR
From the cast and crew meet-and-greet until the team moves to its final dress rehearsals on the Spriet Stage, the magic of theatre comes alive in the rehearsal hall.
The joy of making theatre exists long before a company takes its bow at the end of the first performance. From day one of a new project to staging, sitzprobe, and more, the process of creating a new production means turning an idea into reality through creativity, craft, and collaboration in the Developers Rehearsal Hall.
Henry and Jane are struggling to keep their small business afloat in famine-ravaged Ireland. But finally, they make the difficult decision to leave everything behind, and start a new life in Canada. Henry goes ahead to secure work, while Jane stays home with their two young children. For a year, the lovers send long, yearning letters across the sea. Eventually, Jane too sets out for the new world, Henry’s letters tied in a ribbon at her heart.

A highlight of Student Club for me was the first performance I attended of Kim’s Convenience. I had seen many performances previous to that but it was the first time I was surrounded by such an engaging audience. Every joke or “oooo” and “ahhh” moment, the people around me responded so lively. I really enjoyed the passion from the stage being reciprocated by the audience.
There is a spark to live theatre that just makes my heart happy. I love being both on stage and in the audience because there is a mutual enjoyment between the performers and the viewers that can be very personal. You have to be very attentive when watching live theatre otherwise you’ll miss out on things so I find it very exciting and engaging. I experience so much joy and love with live theatre.
In the next 5 years, I hope to be happy and secure, whatever that may entail. I hope to be in school or on stage doing something I’m passionate about but ultimately, I want to be happy and surrounded by the people I love.
Do it! The Student Club is a very special experience where you are surrounded by young, passionate individuals who will enjoy and talk about the performances with you. There is nothing like it! It’s also affordable and you get free pizza!

From her high school days onward, she was deeply involved in the theatre arts community—as a patron, playwright, actor, and behind-the-scenes technician. Her passion for theatre remained constant throughout her life. In her will, Lucille designated the Grand Theatre, Shaw Festival, and Stratford Festival as her primary beneficiaries, a reflection of how integral theatre was to her well-being and sense of purpose. Lucille’s legacy gift will have a lasting impact on the Grand, and we are profoundly grateful for her generosity. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Lucille’s family for this meaningful contribution, honouring the deep value theatre held in her life.
Ensure the prosperity of the Grand Theatre for years to come through PLANNED GIVING.
