season sponsorAndrew Prashad is a rare talent.
His skill as a tap dancer is among the very top in Canada. Add to that his abilities as a singer and dancer, and you have what the business calls a true triple threat.
Acting is a challenging career path at the best of times. It is particularly challenging for a parent. To be a parent of three young children, the youngest of whom has challenges of this magnitude? Thankfully, for all of us who get to continue to experience his talent, Andrew and his family have continued to find a way to morph, adapt, and support each other so that he can keep bringing his skill to the stage.
This show invites people to break some of the traditional conventions of theatre because Andrew has perspective that many people don’t: there has to be a way to have it all.
Think for a moment about the one thing that you feel most passionate about in your life. Not people, but a thing. Maybe it is your work, maybe a hobby, or a sport. The thing that in some ways personally defines you and feels like an extension of who you are. Then imagine discovering that your child may have a profoundly different relationship with this very thing. This show is an examination of this realization. The manner in which it unfolds helps to unpack that experience into something that is shareable. We are lucky enough to all take a part of it home with us. And it is a gift we will carry for a long time.
RACHEL PEAKE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dahlia Katz PhotographyProud to support the Canada Life Pay What You Can program at the Grand Theatre. Supporting equitable access and inspiring meaningful change
Welcome to the Grand Theatre. The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron (also known as Neutral) peoples and territories associated with various treaties of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapéewak. The Attawandaron peoples once settled this region alongside the Algonquin and Haudenosaunee peoples and used this land as their traditional beaver hunting grounds.
In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as Southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area.
Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people.
We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (also known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work, and tell stories together.

Thank you all so much for coming.
I’ve had so many different types of audience members come see my show over the years. Theatre folks, nontheatre folks, dancers, tap dancers… but my favourite is when the Disabled Community shows up. While the show is for everyone, it’s especially for them.
Growing up in Canada, I never saw myself represented in Theatre, Film, or TV. It was so rare, and when we did see a Brown guy, he was a stereotype. The creators always needed to justify our existence in media. We couldn’t just BE there with other Canadians, experiencing things, and going on adventures.
Advocacy for equality, equity, and representation in society is a large part of what I do and when my son was
born, I was thrust into the Disabled Community as a full-time caregiver/ parent. I thought I knew the struggles. And while I still can’t ever fully understand what it is to be disabled, I was so ignorant to what living in Canada was like for people with disabilities.
The point of this show is to use my many skills and talents for the purpose of telling stories that will resonate with a group of people that is still being left out and only brought up as an afterthought.
The point of the show is to demonstrate what LOVE can do.
I humbly present to you, our everevolving journey. I hope it changes something in you.
Much Love, Andrew ANDREW PRASHAD CREATORAUBURN Stage, APRIL 9 TO 20, 2024

ONE STEP AT A TIME is 60 minutes long and performed without an intermission.

The photographing and video/audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited.
Behind-the-scenes in the
From the cast and crew meet and greet until the team moves to its final rehearsals on the Spriet Stage, the magic of theatre comes alive in the rehearsal hall.
We are grateful for the financial support provided by the following companies whose contributions assisted in the refurbishment of our main rehearsal hall – now aptly named: The Developers Rehearsal Hall.
My involvement with Andrew Prashad’s solo show, One Step at a Time, has been nothing short of lifechanging for me.
For the past seven years, Andrew and his family have welcomed me into their world, and I’ve become an honorary Uncle (and sometime caregiver) to Ezra, Sophia, and Nyasha as a result (who knew that catheterizing a three-year old was that easy?!).
As a director, and as a person, I’m learning so much about accessibility, inclusion, representation, and the growing need to present authentic stories on stage that make a difference to audience members, especially those from marginalized communities and sectors.
After every performance people will say to Andrew (or me if Andrew’s busy)
“this may be your story, but it’s the first time I’ve seen MY story told on the stage.”
And that comes from persons with disabilities, parents of children who have benefitted from Hospitals like Toronto SickKids, other blended families, and families who felt that their circumstances were unique to them alone. None of us is alone, and as Andrew wrote, “we are all just taking it ‘day by day, one step at a time.’”
Thank you, Andrew, for trusting me to help you tell this story, and thank you, Family Prashad, for allowing “Uncle Potts” to come along for the ride.
Thank you, Ezra, for showing us that there are no limitations; you rock, Bro.
A big thank you to each and every person who has supported this “little show that could” since 2017 and last, but certainly not least, thank you to Dennis Garnhum and everyone at “The Grand” for making sure that this show found a safe home in London.
