When I was fifteen years old, my mother, sister, and I drove forty hours due south from Saskatchewan to Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Along the way, we celebrated my sister’s thirteenth birthday with a visit to Graceland, the home Elvis bought and decorated with his newly acquired fortune. If you have never been there, I strongly recommend a visit - it is like nothing I have seen before or since. But what else would you expect from a legend? Right here in London’s downtown and on one of its largest walls, Johnny Cash is painted three storeys high in a mural celebrating his proposal to June Carter which took place onstage at London Gardens back in 1968. A legend.
came together in one space, is almost unbelievable. But it happened. What playwrights
Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux have done in this piece is to allow us to be a fly on the wall - to imagine the conversations, the jokes, the sharing, and the heartache of that night that will forever be a part of music history.
But of course, these musicians would never have existed without the influence of those who came before them, or without the music that was swirling around them at the time. We explore “Rock ‘n’ Roll History Built on Songs Unsung, Stories Untold” later in these pages, and if you are interested in hearing more, please join us for a special AfterWORDS following the evening performance on May 1st!
But what are the moments that make a legend? How many correct turns, how many lucky breaks, how many right places at the right time, how many legs up does it also take? Presley and Cash, along with Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis, inspired a generation. But they were of course all, at one time, simply hopefuls with a lot of talent and a dream.
Million Dollar Quartet is a play that has drawn audiences since its creation in 2010. To think that there was ever a night as magical as this, where four men on the brink of superstardom
For now, enjoy stepping into the past and imagining what might have happened behind closed doors on this magical night of music legends!
RACHEL PEAKE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dahlia Katz PhotographyWelcome to the Grand Theatre. The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron (also known as Neutral) peoples and territories associated with various treaties of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapéewak. The Attawandaron peoples once settled this region alongside the Algonquin and Haudenosaunee peoples and used this land as their traditional beaver hunting grounds.
In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as Southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area.
Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people.
We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (also known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work, and tell stories together.

Million Dollar Quartet serves up the most energetic party of a show, featuring an all-star cast of incredible Ontario based actor-musicians. Add that to the story of Sam Phillips and you’re guaranteed a great night out. Sam Phillips, the ‘Father of Rock and Roll’, found these raw young boys and made them the timeless stars they are today. My curiosity with this show, and what we’re leaning heavily into, is the way Sam Phillips brought up these ‘diamonds in the rough’ - what quality did he see in them that others didn’t? How did he coach their individual sound out of them? When and how did he know to push? These are the questions we’ve brought into the rehearsal room.
I can’t wait for you to learn a bit more about how each of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins came to be. How Sam Phillips influenced each of their careers. And I really can’t wait for you to be swept away in the story based on December 4, 1956, when these four boys sang hit after hit after hit, together for the first and only time.
I have so many people to thank. Thank you to Dennis, Rachel, Lyndee, Christine, and everyone at the Grand Theatre for your contributions to this show. Thank you to my collaborators Patrick, Hannah, Michelle, Josh, Brian, and Laura for joining me on this ride. To the cast and team: thank you for your trust and love and joy.

Behind-the-scenes
From the cast and crew meet and greet until the team moves to its final rehearsals on the Spriet Stage, the magic of theatre comes alive in the rehearsal hall.
We are grateful for the financial support provided by the following companies whose contributions assisted in the refurbishment of our main rehearsal hall – now aptly named: The Developers Rehearsal Hall.
Why did the TD Emerging Talent Program speak to you?
“The TD Emerging Talent Program is a rare opportunity in the non-profit cultural sector where one can receive a salary whilst pursuing mentorship and professional advancement. The Grand Theatre’s standing as an A-House company within the sector is also a very enticing factor, as it allows participants to receive practical experience and mentorship with productions and seasonal execution at a scope and scale found at a few other companies across the country.”
Since you started, What are your 3 highlights of the program so far? Program
“The development of advanced financial literacy, particularly in the areas of production budgeting as well as seasonal planning and long-form budgeting.
1. Shadowing the Senior Leadership Team at various meetings, allows for an appreciation of the broad managerial focus across departments of a large cultural institution.
3.
2. Finally, the team at the Grand Theatre has a long reputation for being some of the nicest people to work with in Canadian Theatre, and who doesn’t want to work with a team like that?!”
what are your hopes for your theatre career?
“As my career progresses, I would hope to be a facilitator in the development and production of new works of Canadian Theatre, with particular support and elevation for artists from more modest socioeconomic backgrounds to bring their stories and perspectives to the stage.”

Before Elvis Presley walked through the front door of Sun Records, owner and producer, Sam Phillips, was known to declare, "If I could find a white man who had the Negro [sic] feel, I could make a billion dollars." Phillips was talking about the rhythmic vocal stylings and heavy, insistent beat of the predominantly Black rhythm and blues (R&B) genre. Cleveland disk jockey, Alan Freed, coined the name "rock ‘n’ roll" in 1951, encompassing music with a quick/upbeat tempo, propulsive rhythm, distorted guitar, and honking saxophone solos. Popular music scholar, Maureen Mahon, observes that rock 'n' roll was the inevitable clash of African American R&B with elements of swing, boogie-woogie, urban blues, Latin rhythms (clave), country and western, rockabilly, and Tin Pan Alley popular song. In 1965, New Orleans pianist Fats Domino said, "What they call rock 'n' roll is rhythm and blues. I've been playing it for 15 years in New Orleans."
Growing up in the segregated South, the four white musicians featured in the Million Dollar Quartet were greatly influenced and taught by Black musicians that they encountered. Black radio stations like the WDIA out of Memphis hired musicians like B.B. King and Rufus Thomas, playing their music to an audience that reached through the Mississippi Delta to the Gulf Coast. Music genres like blues, gospel, and emerging R&B began wafting over the airwaves, greatly influencing the
by norma coates by breanne ritchieblend of southern music that created Perkins, Presley, Lewis, and Cash’s rock 'n' roll sounds.
Urban blues performers like Muddy Waters and Bo Diddley worked their way into the early rock ‘n’ roll sounds of the artists of Million Dollar Quartet. "Godmother of rock ‘n’ roll" Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a gospel singer and one of the first electric guitarists whose mix of spiritual lyrics and electric guitar inspired Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. Fats Domino's unique piano playing style taught Jerry Lee Lewis and Presley how to swing. Although they were ascending at the same time, Presley and Lewis incorporated Little Richard's whooping vocals and driving piano into their recordings and performances. Chuck Berry's mix of blues and country music so impressed Carl Perkins, that Berry's "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" was recorded in the impromptu session on December 4, 1956. The influence of many Black artists on early rock 'n' roll was profound and continues to be heard today.

Describe a highlight of your time being in the Student Club:
“As a newcomer to Canada, joining Student Club provided an invaluable opportunity to forge lasting friendships. Engaging in discussions with my friends about the shows allowed me to deepen my musical perspective and enhance my ability to perceive different viewpoints of the same performance.”
In what ways have you applied your exposure to thea love of the arts to other areas of your life?
“After engaging in meaningful discussions with my Student Club friends, I often share it with my parents and my friends who do not have as much interest in theatre and arts as me. Surprisingly, sharing my positive experiences from the Club has sparked the interest of my parents to join me in watching the upcoming shows at the Grand and the Stratford Festival, which I never expected to happen! ”
What would you say to another student who may be considering coming to student club?
“Don’t hesitate to join! I strongly believe that gaining diverse experiences enriches your life regardless of your future goals. Being involved in a student club presents a wonderful opportunity to connect with like-minded people and exposes you to unique experiences that are hard to come by elsewhere in London. If you're uncertain about your interest in arts and theatre, this is the perfect chance to explore your passions and gain deeper insights into yourself.”
