Roald Dahl’s the musical
We are pleased to support Grand Theatre and the performers captivating audiences with exciting, innovative and entertaining productions.
BMO is proud to be the Grand Theatre’s 2024/2025 Season Sponsor – A Time to Play!
“Just because you find that life’s not fair, it doesn’t mean that you just have to grin and bear it.
If you always take it on the chin and wear it, …nothing will change. ”
This quote, sung by the children of Matilda the Musical, gives me goosebumps. It incapsulates one of the main themes of the play – that it is up to each and every one of us to stand up and be the agent of change. And, of course, in Matilda it is the children who make this change. In so many ways in today’s world we see the impact of incredible young people taking action – whether they are Greta Thunberg or Malala Yousafzai or the young person who lives next door – they are taking it on themselves to imagine the world differently than they inherited it.
It is also a play about the imagination of young people. About the power of creativity to change the world – to change your own world.
For all these reasons, tied up with a fantastic story and incredible music, Matilda felt like the perfect fit for the Grand’s 26th year of the High School Project. If this is your first HSP – welcome! I am so glad you found it. If you have been to many – thank you for your ongoing support of a program
that has had enormous impact on this community for two and a half decades. When I came to the Grand I was blown away by the power and calibre of this program and its productions. It is truly unequalled in the country. I am honoured to be a part of it, and excited for you to dive in with us to this land of fun, of imagination, of adventure, and of the power of children. Perhaps you will leave inspired, both by the material, and by this incredible team of artists, onstage and off.
“Nobody
but me is going to change my story.”
- Matilda
Enjoy!

The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron (also known as Neutral) peoples and territories associated with various treaties of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapéewak The Attawandaron peoples once settled this region alongside the Algonquin and Haudenosaunee peoples and used this land as their traditional beaver hunting grounds.
In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as Southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area.
Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people.
We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (also known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live work and tell stories together.

From my childhood, I have vivid memories of my mother reading Roald Dahl books out loud to me and my brother. I remember being terrified to the point of having nightmares - I just couldn’t get those bald women from The Witches out of my head! I also remember feeling like I was experiencing something transgressive. It felt like I wasn’t being talked down to but rather encouraged to go deeper and explore parts of my imagination and psyche that might have been considered inappropriate for a child - to be outrageous, wild and even “revolting”.
In Matilda, Dahl gives us a young female protagonist tapped into her power despite an abusive upbringing. What most excites me about this adaptation is how beautifully it portrays Matilda’s journey to discovering how exactly to harness
that power. Through curiosity and imagination, she manages to transgress from the painful aspects of her own narrative and find safety. She also starts a revolution! Matilda shows her classmates through small acts of disobedience that they too can change their story.
In Dahl’s books children have wisdom; and throughout this creative process art imitates life and I have learned so much from these young artists. They have inspired me to continue to dream big and have reminded me that theatre is a place for magic, invention, and discovery.
Enjoy the show!

MATILDA THE MUSICAL runs 2 hours and 40 minutes, and is performed with an intermission.
Roald Dahl’s MATILDA THE MUSICAL is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com
MATILDA THE MUSICAL was first commissioned and produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company and premiered at The Courtyard Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, England on 9 November 2010. It transferred to the Cambridge Theatre in the West End of London on 25 October 2011 and recieved its US premiere at the Shubert Theatre, Broadway, on 4 March 2013.
Photography and video/audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited.
The Grand Theatre is an active member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT).
The Grand Theatre acknowledges with thanks the co-operation of the Local 105 and 828 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists, and Allied Crafts of the United States, its Territories and Canada, and the London Musicians’ Association Local 279.
Grand Theatre High School Project Alumni among those nurturing the next generation of theatre artists.
It is fitting that the Grand Theatre High School Project’s 2024 production will be a coming-of-age story.
Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical, this year’s selection for the Grand Theatre High School Project, contains similar themes to the Project itself, now in its 26th year of providing professional theatre mentorship to students: “[Matilda] is a coming-of-age story, and what the musical is asking to us to do is look at the world through a different lens,” says the show’s Director Megan Watson, who is tasked with creating the theatrical world of Matilda and her classmates, a group of children who navigate “grown-up” problems, such as injustice, tyranny, and stepping into one’s own power.
In the world of the High School Project, London and area high school students navigate the “grown-up” environment of a professional theatre, taking on most of the on-stage and production responsibilities to achieve a full-scale musical production.
As ‘growing up’ would have it, three of those Alumni are in mentorship roles for the High School Project’s 2024 cohort, actively working with students to prepare Matilda The Musical—undoubtedly, a full-circle moment.
Meghan Choma was a three-time participant of the High School Project, having been a wardrobe student on The Addams Family (2014), Hello, Dolly! (2015) and Les Misérables (2016). She was first accepted into the program after presenting a handmade pillowcase during her interview. A decade later, she is working professionally as the Grand Theatre’s Assistant to the Head of Wardrobe and has a few assistant design credits to her name at the Stratford Festival. She is currently mentoring the six Grand Theatre HSP wardrobe students, who are building the wacky and colourful costumes of Matilda’s world.
Choma understands the pressures students face as they create a professional-calibre musical at the same time as they begin a new school year. But it was this dual reality that helped her envision her own future in the arts.
“In high school, it feels like those four walls are your life,” says Choma. “Then [through experiences like this one] you realize that it’s not your life, and you don’t have to settle for just what’s in front of you. You can go out and chase other things.”
Director,
This theme is woven within the narrative of Matilda the Musical – a story about a young girl with enchanting potential, who has been systematically kept from realizing that potential by the adults in her life. When she is enrolled at a school run by a brutal Headmistress, it is a teacher, Miss Honey, who notices Matilda’s gifts, and steps in as her mentor.
In the world of the HSP, the ‘Miss Honey’ role could easily be filled by someone like the Grand Theatre’s Director of Education and Community Engagement, and Alumna of the High School Project (The Sound of Music, 2006), Breanne Ritchie. Ritchie handles the administration for the program and works closely with all 58 participating student-artists.
“I feel so much responsibility for making sure that this is as full of an experience as possible for the students,” says Ritchie, who was in grade eleven when she participated in the HSP. In her third year of running the program, Ritchie sees many similarities in what students take from their experience. “It’s really the first window [the students get] into professional theatre [....] I do think it’s something that’s going to spark wherever your interests lay in the moment, and it’s cool to be able to look back and see what else it might have sparked for me that I didn’t realize at the time.”
Sometimes, those interests span across the industry. In 2016, Preston Free Cooper, played Javert in the High School Project (Les Misérables). Now they work in the Grand Theatre’s marketing department regularly supporting the HSP photography and marketing student, providing context into the publicity and promotion side of professional theatre. “[Playing Javert] is one of the best theatre memories I can think of,” says Cooper, who studied musical theatre performance after graduating high school. “Having gone through post-secondary school in a music theatre setting, getting a degree in that way, I also know that performance isn’t the end-all-be-all when it comes to the High School Project. There are so many branches that come out of this, such as being able to work in marketing or arts administration.”
From the cast and crew meet and greet until the team moves to its final rehearsals on the Spriet Stage, the magic of theatre comes alive in the rehearsal hall.
We are grateful for the financial support provided by the following companies whose contributions assisted in the refurbishment of our main rehearsal hall – aptly named: The Developers Rehearsal Hall.
“Even if you’re little, you can do a lot, you mustn’t let a little thing like “little” stop you!”
Matilda teaches us that everyone, no matter how big or small, is capable of standing up to unfairness.
How are you inspired to make a positive impact on the world around you?
“I believe everyone can do something remarkable, regardless of its impact. It’s about taking action, not the size of the change. This belief has driven me to fight injustice, participate in justice clubs and challenge unfair rules. Matilda’s message resonates with me: even the smallest act matters because something is not nothing.” - THEONE DAMUE
“Just like Matilda inspired her classmates, this program and my fellow castmates have inspired me – and I hope many others. Through celebrating diversity and uniqueness, this program shows us that no matter your age, race, gender, etc., you can still do amazing things and be part of a true miracle.” - AYA HOLZBERg
“In the Social Justice Club at my school, I assisted with a bake sale to raise money for women in need at My Sister’s Place. My Sister’s Place caters to women and their children facing multiple vulnerabilities such as gender-based violence, homelessness, and mental health issues. I hope that this production inspires other children that they can make a change in the world, no matter their age or gender.” - MIRAYA AgRAWAL
“Failure is frustrating, but incredibly helpful. If you change the perspective, failure is very inspiring. To be able to try, fail, get up and try again, is one of the most impactful things a person can do.” - gRETA FLEET
“As a dance teacher at my studio, I take pride in knowing that I can be a positive influence on my students and can help them achieve their goals.” -
MORRIgAN BEHARRIELL
“I was a representative at my school’s Relay for Life Campaign, raising money for cancer. By doing this, I put others first and made a difference in my community, similar to Matilda leading her school friends.” - ALExIS KHANNA
“I am inspired to make a positive impact on the world around me by standing up for what I believe is right and supporting organizations that do the same.”
- ANgELINA MOSES
“I am inspired to make a positive impact on the world around me by fixing others’ crowns before my own.” - VIRgINIA MCCALLUM
“I’m inspired to help others feel motivated in acting, singing and dancing, and to help others grow. And hopefully, in the future, I will encourage young actors to push forward and bring a little magic into the world.” - CHARLIE BURNETT
“As a team leader of my hockey team, I am proud to say I mentor the younger girls and help as many people improve their skills as possible.” -
REAgAN BERDAN
“Small acts of kindness inspire me to have a positive impact on this world by encouraging me to be like those people who give and are kind, no matter what.”
- ADELAIDE ALCANTARA
“I constantly remind myself that performing can inspire a positive impact on the world. I remember watching my first production and being empowered to make a positive impact through the arts. I hope someday I can be strong and wise like Matilda. She inspires me every time I am faced with a challenge to bring light with me.” - SOPHIA BELLETH

Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG and many more of the world’s best-loved children’s stories. He remains one of the world’s greatest storytellers and is celebrated annually by the world’s biggest author-based event, Roald Dahl Day – which is recognised on September 13th.
His first children’s story, James and the Giant Peach, published in 1961 and was a huge hit. Every subsequent book became a best-seller. Today, his stories are available in 59 languages and, by a conservative estimate, he has sold more than 250 million books.
Many of these stories have also been adapted for stage and screen, including the 1971 film classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Wes Anderson’s acclaimed Fantastic Mr Fox, and the Royal Shakespeare Company’s multi-award winning production of Matilda The Musical.

Describe a highlight of your time in the Student Club:
The best part of the Student Club is meeting up with all the friends I made, which unfortunately I don’t get to see as much. It is a chance to reconnect with and meet new people that share the same love and passion for theatre.
Ethan Pickett (He/Him) GRAND Connection:
High School Project alumni (The Phantom of the Opera 2023), Little Theatre Company member (Performed on the Auburn Stage twice in 2024), Light walker for Million Dollar Quartet (2024).
How does experiencing live theatre impact you?
Watching live theatre is a moment to forget the tasks of everyday life, and just admire the spectacular work that collaboration and love can create. Every time I watch a show, I experience sheer joy and feel more connected with society as we embark on a journey together. Theatre helps me discover new life lessons and how to live them out, making my life feel more meaningful. Finding theatre is the best moment of my life; I haven’t looked back since.
My ideal journey over the next five years is to continue learning more about my passion of musical theatre and acting. As long as I am doing something I love as much as theatre, and surrounded by the people I love, I couldn’t ask for anything better.
What would you say to another student who may be considering coming to Student Club?
For me, Student Club is all about inclusivity and kindness. Everyone is treated with the same respect, and it is such a beautiful opportunity to bond with people who share the same interests as you. It’s an opportunity to see every show in the Grand Theatre’s Spriet season, while also getting a chance to hear from some of the people in each production. It is truly an experience you don’t want to miss out on!
