Most of us have encountered various versions of A Christmas Carol through our lives. There is great debate to be had at Christmas parties as to which is the “best” interpretation ne of my favourite life philosophies – Alistair Sims’ classic take? the Muppets’ comes from a Ronnie Burkett play: “keep your fork. ‘Cause there’ll be pie.” tongue-in-cheek version? Ronnie is a Siminovich Prize Winner. He holds patents for his invention in marionette creation. He is a member of the Order of Canada. He is, quite simply, one of the most meaningful theatre artists working in Canada today.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT Welcome to the Grand Theatre. The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron (also known as Neutral) peoples and territories associated with various treaties of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapewak. The Attawandaron peoples once settled this region alongside the Algonquin and Haudenosaunee peoples and used this land as their traditional beaver hunting grounds.

In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as Southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area.

Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people.

We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (also known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work, and tell stories together.

SERVINGS: MANY

PREPPING TIME: 5-10 MIN

DIRECTIONS

INGREDIENTS 1 cup butter (no substitutes) 1 cup sugar 3 tablespoons water 1 tablespoon clear Karo syrup 1-2 cups nuts (almonds, pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts) 1 cup chocolate chips ½ cup nuts, finely ground

COOKING TIME: 30 MIN

1. Put butter, sugar, water and syrup together in the saucepan over medium heat (no need to melt the butter, no need to stir).

2. When the light yellow mixture begins to froth, use the wooden spoon to stir it down well. Lightly butter the cookie sheet (real butter) and sprinkle the nuts over the surface.

3. When the bubbly mixture turns caramel-colored in 1015 minutes, give it another good stir.

UTENSILS Large, heavy saucepan /Dutch oven Measuring cup and spoons Wooden spoon Large cookie sheet with sides (or jelly roll pan) Potholders

4. When it turns dark caramel-colored in another 10 minutes or so, pour it over the nuts. Add the scraping from the sides of the pan.

5. Right way, sprinkle the chocolate on top. When it melts, smooth with the back of a spoon. Sprinkle with chopped nuts. Cool. Store it away from sight (fair warning).

Freezes well. Recipe is easily doubled, tripled, quadrupled.

Theatre Credits (Selected): Ronnie Burkett has been captivated by puppetry since the age of seven, and began touring his shows around Alberta at the age of 14. Ronnie Burkett: Theatre of Marionettes was formed in 1986, continuously playing on Canada's major stages, and as a guest company on numerous tours abroad.

Ronnie recieved the 2009 Siminovitch Prize in Theatre, The Herbert Whittaker Drama Bench Award for Outstanding Contribution to Canadian Theatre, a Village Voice OBIE Award and four Citations of Excellence from the American Centre of the Union Internationale de la Marionnette.

Little Dickens from the Theatre of Marionettes follows the international successes of Penny Plain, Billy Twinkle, 10 Days on Earth, Provenance and the "Memory Dress Trilogy" of Tinka's New Dress, Street of Blood, Happy, The Daisy Theatre, and the interactive production, Forget Me Not.
