LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT Welcome to the Grand Theatre. The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron (also known as Neutral) peoples and territories associated with various treaties of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapewak. The Attawandaron peoples once settled this region alongside the Algonquin and Haudenosaunee peoples and used this land as their traditional beaver hunting grounds. In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as Southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area. Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people. We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (also known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work, and tell stories together.

WELCOME Welcome to the second production of our Auburn Series - Cliff Cardinal’s Huff.
C
liff Cardinal is often referred to as a provocateur, a term that is used rarely in Canadian theatre and almost seems to belong to another time and place. Yet how bold, how perfect, to create space in which theatre does what it does best - provokes. To entertain, but not to allow the watcher to be passive.
Clare Brennan in the Guardian wrote in her five-star review of Huff (the choice to not capitalize Indigenous is hers), “Cardinal’s continuously shape-changing performance ceaselessly requires us to recalibrate our understanding of what we are seeing. He will not let us settle into the comfortable position of voyeurs: privileged viewing under-privileged; non-indigenous viewing indigenous. Cardinal offers no glib solutions; he does, though, affirm a position. See a boundary? Challenge it.” At our Season Launch Party, my first official day on the job as the new Artistic Director here at the Grand, Cliff called me out publicly to answer for the upcoming season – a season
he knew I hadn’t programmed. It was at once teasing, joking, antagonizing. It was just a moment, but it felt awkward, uncomfortable, thrilling, and dangerous because I had no idea where it was going. That’s Cliff’s work. It’s why we are drawn to it even though it might at times make us angry or upset, because it also might make us feel a heightened liveness, a sharp presence in the moment that is so rare and so precious. And because he also invites us to laugh, even in the darkness. Cliff’s work brings to my mind an Edward Bond poem entitled On Leaving the Theatre: “Do not leave the theatre satisfied/ Do not be reconciled.” Huff contains moments of love, of delight, of laughter, of light. It also puts forward some incredibly challenging realities. Where those thoughts may lead you is where the excitement and potential of provocation lies… RACHEL PEAKE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

ARTISTS Cliff Cardinal Performer & Playwright
For the Grand Theatre: Debut. Named by The Globe and Mail as a Canadian Cultural Icon in 2022, Cliff Cardinal is a polarizing writer and performer known for his black humour and compassionate poeticism. His solo theatre productions Stitch, HUFF, and Cliff Cardinal's CBC Special have won numerous awards. He is an associate artist at Video Cabaret where he develops his new work. Born on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, he studied playwriting at the National Theatre School of Canada and fronts the hilarious and nefarious Cliff Cardinal and The Skylarks. Cardinal’s first multi-character play, Too Good To Be True, opened Video Cabaret’s 2019 season at The Busy Street Theatre in Toronto with Cardinal himself directing. A workshop version of the script debuted at Summerworks ’13, where NOW Magazine said, “This captivating tale of an off-grid mother and her desperate children solidifies Cardinal as one of the most talented and intriguing writers in the country.” Cardinal is best known for his one-man play HUFF, which he has performed over 200 times. This harrowing yet hilarious show about youth who abuse solvents, at high risk of suicide won the Buddies in Bad Times’ Vanguard Award for Risk and Innovation, two Dora Mavor Moore Awards (Outstanding Performance, Outstanding New Play), RBC’s Emerging Playwright Award, The Lustrum Award (which recognizes the greatest moments at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival) and was shortlisted for Amnesty International’s Freedom Of Expression Award. The production garnered a five-star review in The Guardian Observer titled “a hard-hitting tour de force.” HUFF has been published, translated into French, continues to tour and was released as a podcast by the CBC Cliff Cardinal and the Skylarks’ first recording, This Is Not A Mistake was released in 2016 and their follow up Gonna Be Fine was released in 2020, both are available online.
CLIFF CARDINAL The band’s upcoming release, Suicidal Valentine was released in 2022. The song, Suicidal Valentine,Valentine went to #6 on the Indigenous Music Countdown. Cliff Cardinal's CBC Special, a songwriter/storyteller performance, toured festivals in Ottawa, Calgary, St. Catharines, through Canada’s North starting in Yellowknife and won the Jon Kaplan Spotlight Award for the top performance at Toronto’s SummerWorks Festival. Cardinal lives in Toronto.

For The Grand Theatre: Debut. Karin Randoja is a director based in Toronto. She is also an actor, teacher and singer/composer. For over 30 years she has specialized in creating and directing original devised performances. Karin is a proud founding member of Primus Theatre and The Independent Aunties. Her work has received numerous Canadian and International awards and has been seen in Australia, Denmark, England, India, Italy, France, Japan, Mozambique, Scotland and across the US. As a teacher/director, she has taught at Humber College, The Centre for Indigenous Theatre, Brock University and The National Theatre School of Canada, of which she is also a graduate. But when her father reveals his decision to end his life by medically-assisted death in seven days, poppy-seed bagels become the least of her concerns. He is currently an Instructor at OCAD University and a PhD candidate in Cinema and Media Studies at York University. Alex holds a BFA from Emily Carr University and an MFA from York University. He has taught and coached designers at the National Theatre School of Canada and Sheridan College. His film work, which includes The Pass System, an investigative documentary into the six-decade Canadian policy of segregation of First Nations people, is screened widely across the country. Ryan Cunningham Producer & Production Manager For the Grand theatre: Debut. Ryan is nêhiyawêwin / /Cree from Amiskwacîwâskahikan (Edmonton) and a member of The Michel Band First Nation. He is the Co-Founder of Alberta Aboriginal Performing Arts where he was the founding artistic director from 2009-2014. He had the honour of serving as the artistic director at Native Earth Performing Arts from 20142017. In 2017 he founded Cunning Concepts & Creations a production/management company that tours the award winning play HUFF written and performed by Cliff Cardinal originally produced by Native Earth under the Artistic Direction of Ryan Cunningham. As an actor he has performed on stages across the country for the past 30 years including: The Shaw Festival, Crows Theatre, Canadian Stage, The National Arts Centre, Native Earth Performing Arts, the Citadel Theatre and The Firehall Arts Centre… to name a few. Ryan can be seen playing the role of Darcy Douglas in all 5 seasons of the award winning APTN series, BLACKSTONE. Ryan is the current recipient of the Rising Star Award as the Emerging Director at Crows Theatre, has been nominated for the KLM Hunter Artist Award and the inaugural Johanna Metcalf Performing Arts Prize.

An Historic Gift On March 9, 2017, the Grand Theatre announced an historic donation from Helen and Andy Spriet. The philanthropic leaders in London committed $1,000,000 to support the work of the theatre. This donation marks the largest individual gift in Grand Theatre history and in the arts community in London.
In recognition of this investment, the Grand Theatre main stage was renamed the Spriet Stage.
