I’ve not traditionally been drawn to the action genre. But when Ocean’s Eleven came out I learned how wrong I had been – I was delighted at the way I was completely swept up in the experience. It felt like a perfect recipe of thrills set inside a story and characters I truly care about. At the same time, I loved that the film seemed to have a healthy measure of laughing at itself – inviting us to all be “in” on the inside joke.
When I first read Arun Lakra’s Heist, a few months before its premiere at Calgary’s Vertigo Theatre, I felt that same magic. Trying to portray a film-specific genre onstage can be problematic, but what I sensed immediately on reading this script was that the playwright was approaching it with equal measures of love of the genre and love of theatre. Arun is wildly creative but also analytical, the perfect mix of skills to support him in transforming something we generally only see on film into something deeply theatrical.
This is only the second production of Heist. You are witnessing theatre history in the making! We at the Grand are deeply committed to second-run Canadian plays, which means that once the dust has settled on a world premiere, the playwright can go back into their script with a new team and imagine the show for a second time, through fresh eyes. It is through this ongoing investment in plays and playwrights that the canon of Canadian plays gets stronger and stronger. And you are now a part of that!
We are also very excited to be partnering with our colleagues at the Citadel Theatre on this production. The production was created, built, and rehearsed here in London, and when it finishes here it will go on to a second run in the Citadel’s Shoctor Theatre in Edmonton. This kind of co-production helps our theatre community to cross-pollinate, making the work stronger, and helping the work of our London-based artists, artisans, and craftspeople to be seen across the country.
Now sit back and buckle up for the ride of Heist! Let’s see if you can figure out exactly whodunnit… and remember to help us keep the secret so that future audiences can enjoy the suspense!
RACHEL PEAKE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
We’re so glad you’re here.
The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional territories of the Original storytellers and caretakers of this land, and of the Nations, both settler and Indigenous, who continue to uphold the various treaties of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapéewak.
In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as Southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area.
Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people, and affirm our commitment to welcoming these communities to the Grand Theatre, while working to remove barriers to access and participation.
We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (colonially known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work, share, and tell stories together.

While the silver screen often showcases high-octane heist films, there’s something uniquely captivating about experiencing a heist live on stage. Theatre offers a different kind of excitement, immersion, and connection that sets it apart from cinema.
What makes a heist on stage special is the immediate presence of the performers. In theatre, actors and audience share the same space, creating a visceral connection. The energy in the room heightens every glance, every line of dialogue, and every nuanced performance. As the daring heist unfolds just feet away, you become an active participant, engrossed in the engagement only live theatre can provide.
Arun Lakra's brilliant play Heist weaves a complex narrative of daring criminals, intricate plans, and a web of secrets. Lakra balances spectacle and substance, delving deep into the psyche of his characters. On stage, these characters come alive with authenticity and depth, drawing us into their world.
Staging a heist offers unique opportunities for creativity, and we’re fortunate to have a team of talented designers who’ve exceeded expectations. Their inventive designs and meticulous craftsmanship have brought this production to life.
Heist stories thrive on a diverse, fascinating ensemble of characters, each with distinct skills, motives, and backstories. Our production’s heart and soul lie in the dedication and talent of these artists, and we are immensely proud of their contributions.
It’s been an honour to explore a story rarely told live. A big thanks to Rachel Peake, our cast, crew, creative team, and the Grand production team for their tireless efforts in creating this immersive experience.
We hope to transport you into the heart-pounding world of Heist and that you enjoy this thrilling adventure!
HAYSAM KADRI DIRECTOR
From the cast and crew meet-and-greet until the team moves to its final dress rehearsals on the Spriet Stage, the magic of theatre comes alive in the rehearsal hall.
The joy of making theatre exists long before a company takes its bow at the end of the first performance. From day one of a new project to staging, sitzprobe, and more, the process of creating a new production means turning an idea into reality through creativity, craft, and collaboration in the Developers Rehearsal Hall.
When movie night arrives at the Lakra family home, it is a rare film that we all agree upon. Yet for some reason, my Fast and Furious son (Taro) and my Pitch Perfect daughter (Siya), my Princess Bride (Roopa) and her Holy Grail husband all love watching fun heist movies like Ocean's Eleven. Or Thirteen. (Let’s not talk about Twelve.) Now if only we could agree on the snacks.
A couple of years ago out of the blue, Chad Rabinovitz, the Artistic Director of a theatre company in Indiana (also a heist lover), knocked on my door wanting to commission me to write a ‘heist’ play. His goal was to create a fun, edge-of-your-seat, popcorn-munching, twisty-mysteryheist-whodunnit for the stage.
I said no.
It was an impossible task. How could we possibly bring the sizzle and thrills of a glitzy hundred million dollar Hollywood extravaganza to a simple stage? Plus, writing a heist play, and particularly one for smart, sophisticated audiences who can spot a suspicious butler a mile away, was daunting. Surely they’d seen it all.
I was persuaded to give it a shot. By that I mean I sprawled on the sofa and watched every caper movie ever made (all the while trying to persuade
my family that I was “working”). One day, I had a glimmer of an idea. I started to wonder… could we actually pull off a heist… on stage?
I am grateful to Chad for his belief in me and to Rachel for her belief in this show, to the folks at the Citadel (Edmonton) and Vertigo (Calgary) theatres for their support, to Haysam for his brilliance, to the cast for their perfect blend of talent and brainpower, and to the entire Grand team for all of their hard work in bringing Heist to the stage.
I hope you have fun!

Gwynn is a local radio host. Her mother, Maggie, has a story.
Maggie has spent a lifetime building a wall between herself and her memories—as well as between herself and her inquisitive, journalist daughter. Now, with a healing gathering for residential school survivors approaching, Gwynn wants Maggie to stop evading her truth, and be part of the change.
With a pot of steaming hot tea as the only thing between them, Maggie and Gwynn work to dismantle her wall, uncovering Maggie’s story in a journey of laughter, revelation, understanding, and the bond of a mother and daughter.
The Secret to Good Tea is a vibrant, intimate, and cheeky family portrait based on playwright Rosanna Deerchild (CBC Unreserved) and her own mother. Fresh from a world premiere in its home province of Manitoba, Deerchild’s powerful rst play is set to make its Ontario debut at the Grand Theatre, in partnership with National Arts Centre Indigenous Theatre. Renae Morriseau, who directed the play’s world premiere, returns to Deerchild’s work once again and will direct The Secret to Good Tea on the Spriet Stage.

GRAND Connection: High School Project alumni
The Phantom of the Opera (2023) and Roald Dahl’s Matilda: The Musical (2024).
It is not often that I get the chance to fuel my passion for theatre by connecting with talented, committed working actors. After each show, I was constantly flooded with inspiration from learning about various actors and their information about performing on stage and in the industry.
To any student out there hoping to join the Student Club, I would say that it is an amazing experience that you won’t regret. You have the chance to see unforgettable shows and connect with some of the actors in them, which is why Student Club is so great.
The end goal is to be on a professional stage and do what I love, which is performing. In the meantime, I will continue to stimulate my love for the arts by gathering inspiration from various different shows through the Student Club.
Having been in the past High School Project, the Student Club filled me with an immense sense of community, by being able to stay connected with fellow students who were in the HSP.

Heist makes its Ontario premiere at the grand theatre
The lights are dim. The hum of lasers and drones is barely distinguishable. A dark alley comes to life, illuminated by the glow of five flashlights.
Who could it be? The Boss. The Gilligan. The Mary-Lou. The Popeye. The Geek. Everyone you need to pull off the ultimate high-stakes crime: the heist.
Heist, an edge-of-your-seat, popcorn-theatre, crime caper is taking the Spriet Stage at the Grand Theatre, in a story of five accomplices, who team up for one final job after finding themselves betrayed.
And while many may associate this type of story with the silver screen, Heist is not a movie, but an action-packed theatre production, inspired by the genre that includes Ocean’s Eleven among its most popular artifacts. Diamonds, deals, and deceit take center stage in this co-production with Citadel Theatre, running from January 14 to February 1, 2025.
One might wonder how a heist plot can come to life before your eyes without the aid of "movie magic." The answer lies somewhere in the balance of a cinema-worthy story, innovative technology, clever stage design, and captivating practical effects, creating an immersive experience like no other.
Heist playwright, India-born and Calgary-raised Arun Lakra was inspired to create a heist story while sitting on the couch with his family, watching the 2001 heist-comedy Ocean’s Eleven. That moment, along with a nudge from Chad Rabinovitz (Artistic Director of Constellation Stage & Screen) sparked the idea that would eventually evolve into his latest work.
The world premiere of Heist took place in early 2024 at the renowned Vertigo Theatre, located in the heart of downtown Calgary. Not only did the production welcome back avid theatregoers looking for the latest in live performance, but it also caught the attention of a new demographic—Netflix-binge-watching, video-game-loving Gen Zs.
“I think people who come to see Heist, are people who don’t usually go to the theatre,” says Lakra. Heist integrates modern technical elements that unfold on stage
in real-time, fully visible to the audience. While there are different ways that newer technology may manifest in a theatre production, Lakra opts to put that technology front and center, making it a vital part of the storytelling experience: “I wanted to create a sort of hybrid show, which grabbed elements from both film and theatre,” Lakra explains. “Through my collaboration with Haysam Kadri, our brilliant director, who shares this vision, we have tried to create a cinematic experience on stage.”
As a genre, the “heist” follows a calculated formula that has thrilled audiences since classics like The Asphalt Jungle (1950) and Rififi (1955). At its core, it revolves around a high-stakes target and a skilled crew working together to achieve the impossible. Yet, the path is rarely smooth. Unexpected dilemmas and obstacles arise, building tension and suspense. But a perfect heist is never straightforward—it’s filled with twists and turns that deceive the audience and sometimes even the robbers themselves.
“When I first looked at this show, I thought: ‘this is madness!’ Heist is a thought-provoking, fast-paced, cinematic, popcorn-munching, edge-of-your-seat play,” says Haysam Kadri, who recently arrived in London to direct the Grand Theatre’s production of the show. It will be the second time directing Heist, for the Edmonton-based artistic director of Alberta Theatre Projects.
It’s no secret that Heist promises to deliver excitement, unexpected twists, and action-packed sequences, and with theatre offering the gift of immediacy and intimacy, the experience promises to be a memorable one. “There’s an electricity in the room that can’t be replicated on screen. The audience becomes part of the performance, and every show is a new event,” expresses Kadri.
One question now remains: Is London prepared to witness the biggest heist ever to unfold on stage?

As a charitable organization, we depend on donors, like you, to help us bring world class entertainment to the stage.
Please consider making a donation today to invest in the future of arts and culture in London.
Why do you choose to support the Grand?
I support the Grand because I believe in giving back to the community that I enjoy living in. I understand that the Arts are never fully funded and if we want to see great theatre, then we have to contribute.
How do you think the Grand elevates our City and Region?
Theatre is a great draw for visitors to the city. The Grand offers that while supporting local and area artists. There is quite a bit of summer theatre in the area, but the Grand is able to offer that entertainment during the off season. The Grand gives amazing opportunities to the youth in our area with their High School Project.
What connects you to the Grand?
I was born in Stratford. My father was involved with the beginning of the Stratford Shakespearean Festival (now Stratford Festival) and my best friend was from an acting family so I have long connections to theatre. At the Grand, I started as a volunteer usher and enjoyed watching the plays. Later I met up with some friends who subscribed and I joined them. I like to subscribe so I give the performances a priority and don’t miss any. It is also a good excuse to get together with friends.
What is one of your most memorable experiences at the Grand Theatre?
One of the most memorable performances was the production of Cabaret performed on the Auburn stage. The audience sat at bar stools and the play was performed just like a cabaret on the bar tables. It was a fantastic show!!
