WELCOME

Rarely in life does a person get to step directly into the shoes of one of their mentors, but I am lucky enough to be one of the few who has. In 2014, I was an apprentice director at the Shaw Festival. While there, I had the opportunity to assist director Dennis Garnhum on The Philadelphia Story on the Festival Stage. Dennis knew I had an eye towards artistic directorship and he was, at the time, Artistic Director of Theatre Calgary. I was there to learn from him as a director, but had the added benefit of being able to pick his brain as an artistic director. Shortly after that, Dennis made the move from Theatre Calgary to the Grand.

this production in its first iteration and I can tell you without hesitation what a hilarious adventure you are in for! Featuring some of the funniest people in Canadian theatre, this production is part nostalgia, part kitsch, and full of fun!

Cut to nine years later, and everything aligns for me to step in as Artistic Director for the Grand when Dennis makes his next move. What a gift it has been to inherit this theatre he has been stewarding for the last seven years, and how fortunate in my first year to be able to welcome him back as a director on the fun, fabulous adventure that is Clue!

Usually when I write these notes the script, cast, team, etc are known but how those things will come together is still a mystery. In this case, thanks to our partnership with Royal MTC in Winnipeg, I have actually seen

I didn’t grow up playing Clue, but I remember distinctly a party in university where we were tasked with coming in Clue character and we spent the night watching the film and re-watching and re-creating some of the key moments again and again (“flames, flames on the side of my face!”) Whether you are a committed player of the game, whether the movie holds a place deep in your heart, or whether you are coming to this story for the first time, I hope this production transports you through laughter and gives you an escape to a world of make-believe.

Here’s to the joy of things coming full circle!

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

Welcome to the Grand Theatre. The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron (also known as Neutral) peoples and territories associated with various treaties of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapéewak. The Attawandaron peoples once settled this region alongside the Algonquin and Haudenosaunee peoples and used this land as their traditional beaver hunting grounds.

In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as Southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area.

Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people.

We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (also known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work, and tell stories together.

DIRECTOR'S NOTES

I grew up playing CLUE, the board game. It captured my imagination. When it appeared a few years ago, I was quick to want to direct the stage version. It’s such a clever adaptation of a piece of nostalgia that so many people can relate to. I’ve learned that everyone plays it differently - some people always want to play a certain character (Colonel Mustard for me) and others always assume the murder is in a certain room (the study, always the study for me) and why do I imagine the murder is always done with the rope? I bring these strategies to the game - what nostalgia do you bring?

Clue is full of secrets and surprises, so let me reveal one: this production you are seeing was created and staged at the Manitoba Theatre Centre this past November. The cast you see assembled has had the great advantage of playing the play to audiences for a while now.

Watching them, you might wonder if they really are that clever, charming and funny in real life? The answer is yes. Ridiculously so. And they LOVE performing Clue. That glint in their eye is real.

This epic scaled production continues to be a joy - first in its inception and now bringing the show to the Grand.

I chose this play for the Grand when I was the Artistic Director and I am so incredibly honoured to come home with this production now. This has been one of my all-time favourite shows to work on. Hearing the laughter from the audiences nightly reminds me how vital joy is at this time.

Welcome to Clue. Let the game begin.

HERE's YOUR CUE

Ahria Consulting is thrilled to play a starring role as the title sponsor of Clue, paying homage to the timeless board game and its cult classic film adaptation. Just like the antics of Colonel Mustard and company, Clue promises to be a slapstick comedy extravaganza that'll have you giggling all the way home from the theater.

helping individuals thrive, leaders soar, and organizations become havens of excellence. And as for our team? They're not just characters; they're the real MVPs behind the scenes, dedicated to cracking the code of organizational enigmas with precision and panache.

In a world where challenges are abound, a night out for some good old-fashioned laughter is like finding a treasure in the attic. But let's face it, the struggles facing businesses and individuals today are as serious as a game of Clue played with real consequences. From talent acquisition and retention to navigating the labyrinth of today's workplace, the stakes are high.

That's where Ahria steps in, ready to demystify the complexities of HR and talent management one puzzle piece at a time. While our solutions might not involve candlesticks or billiard rooms, they're guaranteed to ignite inspiration,

"WE ARE SO PROUD TO BE THE TITLE SPONSOR OF CLUE! "
TITLE SPONSOR

At Ahria, our rallying call is that we believe everyone deserves a great place to work. From recruiting the best people not just based on skills but how well they fit with the organization to helping people off board out of untenable and unworkable employment relationships. From helping people build and execute career plans to developing skills to help them excel in their chosen careers. From growing leadership capabilities in organizations to measuring how engaged employees are. And of course, wrapping all of this around sound relevant and applicable HR policies and procedures. In other words, we are transforming work by focusing on the complete life cycle of the employee. Borrowing from the Grand Theatre’s mission of being “World Curious. THE ROOF

of boddy manor is actually 2 separate pieces and weighs a whopping 1,400 pounds!

THE SET

of CLUE was driven in one 53’ truck from MANITOBA. That's around a 19-hour drive from the royal manitoba theatre centre to the grand theatre!

BODDY MANOR

from the floor to the roof is 29’ 2” tall.

This is just under the size of a typical three-story house!

BEHIND THE MAGIC

48 practical lights (lamps, sconces, etc.) are used during the show.

It takes a crew of 20 people working 36 hours to install the set of CLUE

REVOLVE

THE REVOLVE

is 30 ft in diameter - larger than the ones used for THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. has Large power cables that come down through the middle of the set from the ceiling. So, After every show, the revolve needs to be “rewound” to straighten out thEse cables.

TD BANK GROUP SUPPORTS CANADA'S FUTURE ARTS LEADERS WITH THE TD EMERGING TALENT PROGRAM AT THE GRAND THEATRE. EMERGING TALENT PROFILE: Danielle Dixon

Education & Community Engagement Intern

Why did the TD Emerging Talent Program speak to you?

“The TD Emerging Talent Program was a perfect way for me to explore arts careers, and expand my skills. With a background in music and education, this opportunity at the Grand was a perfect way for me to merge those two passions and learn directly from professionals in the industry.”

Since you started, What are your 3 highlights of the program so far?

“Helping with the resources and execution of the haie & The Chocolate Factory Relaxed Performance.”

1. “Always getting to meet with such incredible community members.”

3.

2. “Being a light walker for the Phantom of the Opera, and standing on the revolve!”

Charlie & The Chocolate Factory The Phantom of the Opera

what are your hopes for your theatre career?

“I’ve always been curious about the “behindthe-scenes” jobs at art organizations, but never quite knew how people got there or what their day-to-day tasks looked like. After this experience at the Grand, it’s opened my eyes to the vast possibilities of arts careers out there. I’m open to any opportunity that might come my way, but hope that in the future I can explore positions related to Education & Community Engagement within music organizations.”
