sort of mashup pristine Shakespeare? Probably not. But the joy of experiencing a play like As You Like It through this 1960’s Okanagan Beatles lens feels to me almost like discovering a new Shakespearean play. There is the brilliance of the language, but through this adaptation I discover things in the play that I had never seen or felt before. For those of us who are at home with Shakespeare it allows us that feeling of new-ness. At the same time, the language of music in this production opens a door of accessibility to people who sometimes feel daunted by Shakespeare. If that is you, I hope your enjoyment of tonight’s production will help you to feel a bit more belonging in Shakespeare – not just this one, but in others as well.

take us part of the way and the Beatles can pick up the baton!

I spend a lot of time thinking about adaptation in general, and of Shakespeare in particular. Is this

While this play is of course a love story, I am also always moved by it as a story of friendship. Loyalty and love, along with a willingness to go anywhere that is needed, is a mark of truly magical friendship. Who do you love enough to support as they wander in the forest? This play might just move you to give them a call.

Enjoy!

Welcome to the Grand Theatre

We’re so glad you’re here.

The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional territories of the Original storytellers and caretakers of this land, and of the Nations, both settler and Indigenous, who continue to uphold the various treaties of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapéewak.

In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as Southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area.

Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people, and affirm our commitment to welcoming these communities to the Grand Theatre, while working to remove barriers to access and participation.

We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (colonially known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work, share, and tell stories together.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

As You like It is a love story.

Love in its many forms. From youthful, romantic love, to the love of a mother and a daughter, to the belief that to get what we want in life, truly, all we need to do is love and respect each other – a belief that resonated as much in Shakespeare’s time as it did in the sixties – and does today.

We are telling this story with “a little help from our friends”, the Beatles. The Fab Four’s songs integrate perfectly into this story. I have cut A LOT of Shakespeare’s text to make room for them. The Bard’s story comes alive through song, particularly as the characters find themselves in the woods where emotions can no longer be contained by words alone.

Orlando’s love letters become love songs. Amiens and the lords sing as they refine their philosophy about life and love. Even the evolution of the Beatles’ songwriting is perfect for the story arc of the play. The early Beatles songs are naïve and youthful, which is where the young lovers start. But as we meet the thinkers in the forest and life becomes more complicated, we are able to transition into the Beatles' later, more spiritual and philosophical songwriting.

This production premiered at Bard on the Beach in Vancouver in 2018. Since then, we have shared it with audiences in Edmonton, Winnipeg, Chicago, Milwaukee, Vancouver (again!) Washington, D.C. and Calgary. It is such a joy to share this As You Like It with so many audiences!

Shakespeare, the 1960s and the Beatles are a perfect combination. I’m so glad you have joined us for this adventure into the forest. I hope by the end of the play we will send you out of the theatre with a song in your heart and a belief in our shared humanity.

Behind-the-scenes in the

DEVELOPERS REHEARSAL HALL

From the cast and crew meet-and-greet until the team moves to its final dress rehearsals on the Spriet Stage, the magic of theatre comes alive in the rehearsal hall.

The joy of making theatre exists long before a company takes its bow at the end of the first performance. From day one of a new project to staging, sitzprobe, and more, the process of creating a new production means turning an idea into reality through creativity, craft, and collaboration in the Developers Rehearsal Hall.

BEFORE & AFTER: Cultural Icons

The pop culture Effect of William Shakespeare & the beatles

Before William Shakespeare, English literature was predominantly influenced by religious and historical themes, with works often written in Latin. Shakespeare's works introduced complex characters, innovative plots, and a rich use of the English language, transforming English literature and drama. His plays blended various genres, combining elements of comedy, tragedy, and history, creating multifaceted narratives that appealed to a wide audience.

Shakespeare's influence extended into the development of the English language, coining many words and phrases still in use today, such as "break the ice," "heart of gold," and "wild-goose chase." His mastery of verse and prose allowed him to convey deep human emotions and philosophical ideas, making his characters relatable and timeless. The introduction of soliloquies, where characters reveal their innermost thoughts directly to the audience, added a new dimension to storytelling, offering profound psychological insights.

Shakespeare's impact is evident in the works of countless writers, from his contemporaries like Christopher Marlowe to modern authors like James Joyce and Tom Stoppard. His plays continue to be performed worldwide, showcasing their enduring relevance and universal themes.

Shakespeare is also celebrated in Ontario with the presence of the prominent theatre company known as The Stratford Festival (previously the Stratford Shakespeare Festival). Since 1953, The Stratford Festival has produced works by Shakespeare during each annual festival season.

Before The Beatles, English rock music was heavily influenced by American rock 'n' roll and blues. British bands often emulated American artists like Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard. However, The Beatles, with their innovative songwriting, harmonies, and recording techniques, revolutionized the genre. Their distinct British sound, characterized by melodic bass lines, sophisticated vocal arrangements, and inventive studio effects, influenced countless artists.

The Beatles' impact extended beyond music to fashion, culture, and social movements. They popularized the "mop-top" hairstyle and influenced 1960s fashion with their iconic suits and later, their psychedelic clothing. Culturally, The Beatles' music addressed themes of love, peace, and social change, resonating with the countercultural movement of the 1960s. Songs like "All You Need Is Love" and "Revolution" became anthems for peace and change, reflecting the societal shifts of the era. Additionally, their groundbreaking use of the recording studio as an instrument, with albums like "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," set new standards for musical production and experimentation.

Start your holidays with Maria and the von Trapps in this timeless, beloved, family musical ... a very good place to start!

The abbey life is not the life for Maria: an exuberant, free-spirited, would-be nun with the habit of eeing her studies to sing in the Austrian mountainside.

For a change of scenery, Maria is o to join the von Trapp household as the latest in a long string of governesses for humourless naval captain Georg von Trapp and his seven disciplined but mischievous children. While the family is initially no match for Maria’s unstoppable love of music and whimsy, it isn’t long until the power of song brings much welcome harmony, romance, and the promise of a bright future, into their home.

Grand Theatre Artistic Director Rachel Peake helms this 2024 holiday production, based on the Tony Award-winning musical, Academy Award-winning lm, and featuring memorable classic songs: “My Favourite Things”, “Do-Re-Mi”, “Sixteen Going on Seventeen”, “So Long, Farewell”, and “Something Good.”

I have grown up around the arts and have always been impacted by the things around me. It gives me a chance to see different perspectives, culture and emotions. Live performance evokes emotions and has fostered my creativity.

GRAND Connection:

High School Project alumni - Wardrobe for The Phantom of the Opera (2023) and Roald Dahl’s MATILDA The Musical (2024).

Every time I get to go to a show, I get to see the friends I made while working on the show and other students in the community who enjoy and appreciate theatre as much as I do.

If anyone were interested, I would gladly tell them to try it out. It’s only every few weeks, so it’s not a huge commitment, and after the show you get to talk to other students and actors about the show over a nice pizza dinner. It’s definitely worth it.

I want to do a few things when I grow up like firefighting, tattooing, and costumes. I also want to stay connected to theatre. I hope within the next five years I have a stable firefighting career and sew and practice tattoos in my off time. Theatre has taught me to work hard at the things I’m passionate about, and that I can do anything I set my mind to.

As a student club member, I have experienced so much help from the community for achieving education and hobbies in my future. Everyone gets to share their love and passion for theatre and arts together.

Theatre is committed

CHICA

AS YOU LIKE IT: Daryl Cloran & Bard on the beach shakespeare festival’s eastern canada premiere at the grand

They say there’s nothing new under the sun, but it was Sarnia, Ont. born Daryl Cloran, in partnership with Vancouver’s Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival founder and Artistic Director Christopher Gaze who dreamed of producing As You Like It as a musical featuring the music of The Beatles. Despite four previous productions of “As You” in the company’s history (1991, 1998, 2005 and 2011), adding popular music was a new twist on a familiar theme. Christopher tapped Daryl, whose 2015 Roaring ‘20s musical adaptation of Love’s Labour's Lost was an audience favourite. Daryl infused the Fab Four into the charming plot, adapted to cleverly integrate the song lyrics into Shakespeare’s text. The result? A runaway hit.

In 2018, Bard on the Beach welcomed 60,000 people to the most successful production in their history. But As You Like It’s extraordinary run was not over. In 2019, the production continued to evolve and was seen in Edmonton at the Citadel Theatre and in Winnipeg at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. The pandemic cancelled plans to tour to Chicago and Milwaukee, but As You Like It was finally able to play at Chicago Shakespeare Theater in 2021 and Milwaukee Repertory Theater in 2022. After the summer of 2022 and another run at Bard, the production moved to the Shakespeare Theater Company in Washington, D.C. in late 2023, and then to Theatre Calgary in early 2024 before finally landing at the Grand Theatre.

“As You Like It is already one of Shakespeare’s most musical plays. It already had a couple of songs in it, and is quite lyrical in its construction,” explains Cloran, who is the Artistic Director of The Citadel Theatre in Edmonton. “I think one of the great successes of the show is that all of [The Beatles’] songs continue the journeys of these Shakespearean characters through song.”

As for who should be making their way to London, Ontario’s downtown to see this mash-up: “this production is definitely for Beatles fans. It’s definitely for Shakespeare fans. But I think it’s also a great gateway to Shakespeare,” says Cloran.

THE CAST OF aS YoU like it
DIRECTED BY DARYL CLORAN

As You Like It was first performed in the early 17th century and has since become one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays. Set in the enchanted Forest of Arden (which has been re-dressed as the Okanagan Valley in Cloran’s production), the story follows the journey of Rosalind as she navigates various complexities of love and identity. Filled with witty dialogue, mistaken identity, memorable characters, and a touch of magic, As You Like It continues to resonate with audiences over 400 years later.

For the 1960s edition coming to the Grand, existing themes of love and friendship carry through effortlessly, and with so many of Shakespeare’s texts taking characters down ‘long, and winding roads’ into a pastoral forest-scape, it is not difficult to imagine those same characters hopping into a Volkswagen Bus for their journey into the wood.

And then there's the WWE-style wrestling match that kicks off the audience experience for every performance. Shakespeare’s As You Like It famously begins with a wrestling match that sets into action the events of the story. In As You Like It (Beatles’ Version) audiences will be taking their seats as a full-scale wrestling match is already on stage.

“Often in musicals, you talk about actors being ‘triple-threats’, meaning they can sing, dance, and act,” explains Cloran. “We need quadruple, and sometimes quintuple threats, because not only do they have to be great at Shakespeare, and great singers, musicians, and great dancers, a number of them have to be great wrestlers as well. The virtuosity on display by these actors, is amazing.”

What does the future hold? Who can say, but in the words of Vancouver Sun critic Jerry Wasserman, “You’d have to be a real Nowhere Man not to be on your feet and singing along,” wherever it plays next.
