grand theatre

Welcome to to the Grand Theatre.
The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron (also known as Neutral peoples) and territories associated with various treaties of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapewak. The Attawandaron peoples once settled this region alongside the Algonquin and Haudenosaunee peoples and used this land as their traditional beaver hunting grounds.
In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area.
Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation.
We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people.
We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (also known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we operate.

It is my privilege and honour to provide the President’s Report, outlining the impact of the Grand Theatre’s 2022/23 Season.
I would like to begin by acknowledging transition of leadership as one of the primary markers of the year.
In August 2022 we welcomed our new Executive Director, Evan Klassen. Stepping into this role just prior to the Grand’s first full-scope season since March of 2020 comes with a unique series of challenges, and Evan, along with the entire staff, board, and partners of the Grand Theatre, have met all of those challenges with determination, compassion, and a sturdy vision.
In January 2023, Artistic Director Dennis Garnhum announced that he would be stepping down after 7 remarkable seasons at the helm of the Grand Theatre’s artistic leadership. I would like to acknowledge Dennis’s accomplishments, key artistic instincts, and lasting programming legacy since taking on the role in 2016. Thanks, Dennis.
Part-way through the season, the Grand Theatre also experienced the renewal of its Development Department, onboarding an entirely new team of fundraising professionals to the task of invigorating the Individual Giving, Business Partnerships, and Special Events portfolios of the organization.
This particular season saw the Grand return of a full-scale subscription series, and our first full-capacity season since the pandemic. Not without its challenges in this regard, this season also showed us a glimpse of the future of live arts programming.
grand gala, June 2023
Photo by MALLORY BROWNI am referring specifically to Elf – The Musical, which closed as the highest-grossing production in Grand Theatre history. Following our Grand re-opening in 2021/22, we hoped that we would return to pre-pandemic numbers soon, and Elf showed us that it is possible when you’re Live! And In Person.
In 2022/23 we launched three world premieres through the COMPASS New Play Development program: Grand Ghosts, Homes: A Refugee Story, and Rubaboo – the latter of which continued its journey at the Arts Club Theatre Company in 2023, and will be staged at The Citadel Theatre in 2024. We are grateful to all the artists who lent us their talents to bring these important stories to the stage.
Music played a critical role in the majority of this season’s offerings, reinforcing the Grand Theatre as a pillar of London’s UNESCO City of Music designation. We were proud to partner with Tourism London and the London Music Office to feature 23 London-based and London-affiliated musicians as Guest Artists in the season-closing production of Neptune Theatre’s East Coast Kitchen Party, drawing droves of new patrons into our spaces for the exceptional Maritime production, as well as the post-show festivities.
The 2023 Grand Gala kicked off celebrations of the 25th Anniversary of the Grand Theatre High School Project, and raising funds to support the work of the theatre, including its youth programs. Many special guests attended representing the legacy of the last 25 years, including 50 High School Project Alumni, who united for a surprise performance.
With every AGM there is an opportunity to renew our board of directors. I wish to acknowledge the extraordinary work of our board throughout this period. In particular, I’d like to thank outgoing director, Amira Moussa, as well as welcoming several new board members to the table. Finally, I extend thanks to my exceptional predecessor, Anita Shah, who concluded her term as board President in the middle of the 2022/23 season.
I remain exceptionally moved, and extraordinarily proud of the Grand Theatre, our team, and the theatre's position as a central cultural hub of our community.
George Kerhoulas President Grand Theatre Board of DirectorsThe occasion of an annual report is an opportunity for reflection on the year that has elapsed. And what a year the Grand’s 2022/23 season was! Our first full season back to live performances post-pandemic was hallmarked with outstanding artistic, critical and popular successes. It was a season of change, of growth and of renewal.
This AGM marks my first full year as Executive Director at the Grand. It has been a joy to helm this organization through the year. Our people truly are what makes this place special – from our loyal volunteers, artists, crew, staff and board members – to our subscribers, our donors and supporters throughout the community. Thank-you for continuing to believe in the Grand.
The 2022/23 season was one filled with so many successes: At the heart of our 2022/23 season was the popular sensation, our holiday production of Elf – The Musical that worked its way into the hearts of Londoners, and will be so fondly remembered. The season also brought three world premieres to the stage. We are so proud to have created the hilarious hit, Grand Ghosts, the touching Rubaboo, and the inspiring Homes: A Refugee Story, this year.
The year was one filled with change for the Grand, with Artistic Director Dennis Garnhum announcing his departure from the Grand in January 2023. We wish Dennis all the best – and know that he won’t be a stranger here (hint: watch for his artistry onstage with Clue in 2023/24). Dennis’ departure also meant a significant search was undertaken by our organization, one which culminated in the appointment of Rachel Peake as our next Artistic Director in October 2023. I acknowledge the extraordinary work undertaken by the Grand’s board of directors & search committee, and I look forward to charting the course of this organization with Rachel over the coming years.
The pandemic, never far from anyone’s mind, reared its head in 2022/23 and we had to cancel a single Elf performance – and what audiences won’t know is that the cast & crew valiantly kept the show going through countless other illnesses and injuries through its 6-week run. The year has been a testament to the creativity and tenacity of all our crew, artists & staff. Thank-you.
Financially, the year was a challenge. Audiences were slow to return to the theatre, and this season marked our first return to a subscription season since 2019/20. As a result, our 2023/24 program was chosen specifically to address this challenge, and we know that audiences will be thrilled with the slate of programs in the upcoming year. The Grand is built on our community enjoying great theatrical stories. We simply cannot survive without the support of subscribers, single ticket buyers, donors, and the business community. At this critical time for the arts, we need your support and attendance, now, more than ever.
As the 2022/23 year closed, we joyously launched our 2023/24 season, a Season of Pure Imagination. And we’re now busy looking towards the future, optimistic for the 2024/25 season and beyond.
Welcome back to the Grand, London.

For decades, the Grand Theatre has upheld the practice of being a “teaching theatre,” and facilitating annual apprenticeships in both production and administration.
Over the 2022/23 Season, these apprenticeships continued, with placements offering both paid and unpaid opportunities for mentees to immerse themselves in their respective craft ,within a large regional and producing theatre, under the leadership of well-established mentors.
With a strong focus on skills and career development, apprentices gain valuable hands-on experience, working alongside the Grand's skilled artists, artisans, and administration, and have a role in longer-art planning, as well as team management, and leadership.

Dear Grand Theatre Supporters, Patrons, and Friends,
I hope this message finds you in good health and high spirits.
As the Past President of the Grand Theatre Board of Directors, I am both honoured and humbled to have been asked to contribute to the AGM report in commemorating Dennis Garnhum, who served as Artistic Director of the Grand for seven extraordinary seasons of creative leadership.
Dennis Garnhum’s journey with the Grand Theatre has been nothing short of transformative. Over the years, his unique vision, his unwavering commitment to artistic excellence, his infectious passion for the performing arts and his dedication to enriching the cultural tapestry of our city have left an indelible mark. Dennis has elevated the Grand to new heights, making it a vibrant hub of creativity and inspiration.
During his tenure, Dennis' artistic brilliance and innovative programming challenged us to push the boundaries of what theatre can be, bringing diverse stories and voices to our stages and engaging our audiences in unforgettable experiences. His commitment to inclusivity and diversity has positioned the Grand Theatre to be a space where diverse voices are celebrated and where everyone feels welcome. Under Dennis’ guidance, the Grand has become a place where stories come to life and where the arts serve as a catalyst for meaningful conversations.
As we bid a fond farewell to Dennis Garnhum, we also look forward to a bright future for the Grand. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the Grand Theatre’s new Artistic Director, Rachel Peake, to the Grand family. I wish her the very best as she brings her own unique artistic vision and perspectives to the Grand, and I look forward to the creative journey she will, undoubtedly, take us on.
As a community, let us continue to support and cherish this cultural gem, ensuring that it remains a place where imagination knows no bounds, and where the magic of theatre continues to thrive.
Thank you, Dennis, for your outstanding contributions to the Grand Theatre, and our community. May your future endeavours be as bright and fulfilling as the legacy you leave behind. We wish you every success and we will always consider you a cherished member of the Grand Theatre community.

On March 9, 2017 the Grand Theatre announced an historic donation from Helen and Andy Spriet, philanthropic leaders in London who committed $1,000,000 to support the work of the theatre. This donation marks the largest individual gift in Grand Theatre history and in the arts community in London.
In recognition of this investment, the Grand Theatre main stage was renamed the Spriet Stage.
