Alec Motyer has had a profound, formative influence on my preaching. In this book he puts his decades of wisdom on expository preaching at the reader’s fingertips. This is as practical and Biblically solid a book on preaching as you can find today.

Alec Motyer once said of Allan Harman’s commentary on Isaiah, ‘His work has made me wish wholeheartedly that I could start all over again.’ And Alec’s succinct and stirring treatise on preaching makes me wish wholeheartedly that I could start all over again— in that blessed privilege of preaching, praying and pastoring.

Alec Motyer is a man of the Bible. His love and understanding for the Scriptures, that was instilled in him from a very young age spills out in his writings and also in his recent book, Preaching? Simple Teaching on Simply Preaching. Alec has done a fantastic job in making preaching as simple as the title suggests. The main point that stands out throughout the book is that preaching is uncomplicated, but requires work, and hard work. The work is not only in the preparation, but also the behaviour and the spirituality of the preacher. I liked the comparison of a sermon to baking a cake. He suggests that just as we would not put the cake ingredients in front of our guests, but rather put them together orderly and fashionably, then we should do the same with the sermon. A sermon is more than just its ingredients. Another of his sayings is that sermon preparation is one part inspiration, and nine parts perspiration. The book is very helpful to both the novice as well as the veteran preacher. I highly recommend the book.
