Thomas Tawell House
Just off Magpie Rd, in North Norwich, lies the quiet, tranquil setting of Thomas Tawell House. It has been a care home for over 50 years and currently provides care for up to 37 residents. Black Swan Care (who run homes such as Heathcote House on Unthank Rd; Chiswick House on Christ Church Rd and Laurel Lodge on Ipswich Rd) recently purchased the home. Extensive refurbishment means that it now supports those with multiple care and support needs, specializing in assisting those affected by sight loss.
The home is named after Norwich-born benefactor Thomas Tawell (1763–1820). An ironmonger who lost his sight in 1805, Tawell subsequently bought property and land on Magdalen Street to open ‘an institute for the benefit of the ‘indigent blind’ in Norfolk and Norwich.’ Until late 2022, the home was run by Vision Norfolk, a charity that has been assisting those with impaired vision since 1805. Vision Norfolk continues to provide housing and support at nearby Hammond Court and the Bradbury Activity Centre.

Black Swan’s purchase of the home has led to an exciting refurbishment programme. Bedrooms and living areas have been renovated to create bright, inviting and comfortable spaces. Specialist flooring and colour ways support residents with sight impairments, alongside a secluded, outdoors sensory-garden area.
As Ellie Johnson, manager at Thomas Tawell House says, ‘Our home is in such a lovely position in Norwich. Many people don’t realise we’re here, but when they come to see us, they see what a lovely setting it is and what we have to offer. We’re planning on lots of events and activities to welcome people to visit us and find out how we can support them with their short term or longer-term care needs.’
Black Swan Care provides care and support to over 600 people in 22 residential care homes in Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Lincolnshire.
