Transitioning to Dubai was not without its tribulations.

A

midst the glittering skyline of Dubai, a young Filipino marketing maven is shaping the future of Filipinos looking to invest in their homeland. Mariah Karyll H. Latorza, at the tender age of 23, epitomizes the fusion of youthful zest and entrepreneurial spirit, carving a niche for herself and her compatriots in the expansive realm of real estate. Latorza’s tale begins in the hallowed halls of Batangas State University, where she honed her prowess in development communication, graduating as Cum Laude—a testament to her dedication and intellect. She shares with The Global Filipino Magazine, “I am most passionate about community engagements, which is why I pursued the said field.” Her role as Marketing Manager at RHBC Commercial Brokers Co. L.L.C in Dubai serves as a continuum of her commitment to societal development. Reflecting on her career trajectory, Latorza, who is also a pageant enthusiast and title holder, elucidates, “I started working in the real estate industry just a month ago in Bataan, right after that I was tasked to manage RHBC Commercial Brokers here in Dubai.” This monumental role is not just a job— it’s a leap of faith, a stewardship she embraces with the fervor of someone who’s found their calling. She fondly recounts her time as a Special Assistant for Special Events Management under the Governor of Oriental Mindoro,

“This has got to be the toughest decision I have ever made,” Latorza admits, divulging the weight of her choice to move abroad. Her tenure abroad was preceded by offloading incidents that tested her resolve. “It was a very disheartening experience for me,” she confides, but her CEO’s unwavering trust served as her beacon. Latorza

previous employer’s appreciation, a sentiment that underscored the gravity of her departure towards the unknown. Yet, it’s not just a story of struggles but one of unyielding support and indomitable spirit. “During these trying times, I had my family, my friends, and my RHBC family,” she acknowledges. Their support was her fortress against adversity, enabling her to persevere and ultimately thrive in her new role. Looking ahead, Latorza envisions a future replete with entrepreneurial ventures and a commitment to guide her fellow Kabayans in smart investment practices, especially in real estate. Her plan is to sow seeds of wisdom and share the fruits of her labor with those who stood by her through thick and thin. To her fellow overseas Filipinos, Latorza offers sagacious advice: “Always remember why you started.” She urges them to be discerning in their associations and judicious with their finances. It is a mantra born of experience, reflective of her own journey’s highs and lows.

Chef Touru’s path was strewn with challenges and trials. He drew strength from the Japanese philosophy of resilience, embodied in his favorite saying, “Nana korobi ya oki.” Reflecting on his journey, he shares, “The path to success often felt solitary, demanding endurance and sacrifice.” It’s a narrative of facing adversities, embracing them, and emerging stronger. Vision for the future: Nurturing dreams and aspirations Chef Touru’s future is not just about culinary expansion but also about nurturing and giving back. He aspires to bring the Japanese culinary experience to a wider audience. More importantly, his goal is to inspire and mentor his team, enabling them to chase their own dreams. “I want to extend the kindness I received and help others build their futures,” he states, highlighting his commitment to empowering his employees and their families.

In an exclusive feature with The Global Filipino Magazine, Chef Touru unfolds his life story, echoing his life’s guiding principle, “Nana korobi ya oki” – fall seven times, get up eight. Embarking on a culinary dream The seeds of Chef Touru’s culinary aspirations were sown in an unlikely

setting of hardship. “My drive to be more, have more, and prove more sprouted from poverty,” he reflects. His odyssey began at 18, leaving the Philippines for Japan on a scholarship. It wasn’t merely a geographic transition but the inception of a life-altering dream - to own a Ramen restaurant. This dream was nurtured as he balanced various roles, evolving from an interpreter to aiding in a friend’s Japanese restaurant. These diverse experiences honed his skills and ingrained in him the nuances of Japanese cuisine and hospitality. For Chef Touru, ramen is not just food; it’s a vessel of life’s joys and energies. He emphasizes the importance of enduring through life’s ups and downs to sculpt a better version of oneself. Chef Touru’s story also touches on his humble beginnings. He recalls his provincial upbringing and the challenges of adapting to city life in Manila. “I faced ridicule and hardship, but these experiences only fueled my determination,” he says. His transformation from a provincial boy to a culinary maestro is a narrative of relentless self-belief and hard work. “The person I am today is a gift to my younger self, a testament to the power of dreams and perseverance,” he concludes with a reflection of pride and fulfillment.

But what drives a man to pour his heart into such work? For Mira, it’s passion intertwined with a purpose. “Pinaka-naeenjoy ko sa work na ‘to ay mahal ko ang trabaho ko, may naitutulong ako sa mga tao hindi mas sa material na bagay kundi sa pagbibigay ng impormasyon na dapat nilang malaman dito sa UAE,” he asserts.

n the fast-paced realm of social media, where viral content can shoot creators to instant fame, a new name has been resonating within the Filipino community — Edmirr Van Tamondong, or ‘Mira Bulakenya’ as he’s fondly called. A licensed content creator for MB Social Media and Development, Mira has turned his once hobby into a career that spans four years and counting in the deserts of the UAE. His story is not just a narrative of personal triumph but also a shining example of the resilience and unyielding spirit characteristic of OFWs. Mira’s journey abroad began at 23, an age when many are still charting their life’s path. He found his footing as a service crew member in an Arabic restaurant — a humble start that was abruptly disrupted by the pandemic. “Nung ako ay 23 taong gulang pa lamang, isa sa mga naging unang trabaho ko ay ang pagiging service crew sa isang Arabic restaurant. Nang dumating ang pandemic, lahat ng mga trabahong pinagkakakitaan ay nawala,” Mira recalls the uncertainty that gripped his life. It was during these three jobless months that he discovered his knack for creating videos, not knowing this skill would later bloom into a full-fledged career. “When I started making videos, it was just my way of helping people who were sad, down, and without hope,” Mira shares with The Global Filipino Magazine. His content, which began as a medium to spread laughter and smiles, struck

This passion has not only given him a platform to influence but also the means to give his family a better life. The satisfaction of impacting lives keeps Mira dedicated to his craft. He enjoys the reach and influence his work grants him, allowing him to make a tangible difference. Mira’s content is more than just entertainment; it is a beacon of knowledge and a source of comfort for many Filipinos miles away from home. Despite the success and the influence, Mira hasn’t forgotten his roots and his battles, especially the collective struggle of the pandemic.

“Alam nating lahat na itong mga nakalipas na taon, ang pinakamalaking dagok talaga ay ang pandemic,” he states, acknowledging the trials that have befallen everyone, more so the OFWs. He credits his creative mindset and video creation for not only helping him cope but also for allowing him to spread joy to his community and family. Looking ahead, Mira aims to continue creating videos to make people happy and to eventually establish a business to help unemployed individuals in the Philippines. His advice to his fellow kababayans abroad is a mixture of resilience and patience: “Walang susuko sa anumang laban; ‘wag madaliin ang mga bagay-bagay.” As the mantra of his life suggests, “Time is the most valuable thing a man can spend,” Mira continues to spend his time wisely, crafting a narrative that’s not only uplifting for him but also inspiring for the global Filipino community. For anyone seeking to connect or collaborate with Mira, he is reachable at his mobile number 0506587668 or via email at emapue1996@gmail.com.

Maureen’s identity as an OFW is a source of great pride for her. It’s not just about professional advancement; it’s about showcasing Filipino skills, resilience, and the deep-rooted values of hard work and faith. She reflects on this experience, stating, “As Filipinos working overseas, we bring our cultural strengths to the global stage, earning recognition for our dedication and ability to collaborate with diverse teams.”

he professional journey of OFW Maureen Sinamban Magno is a compelling narrative of transformation and growth. Known as Mau or Mayy to those close to her, she began her international career in 2016 with a significant position in a renowned retail company in Abu Dhabi. Despite her success in accounting, a profound sense of unfulfillment led her to explore new avenues. In 2019, a pivotal opportunity in the insurance sector unfolded, marking the beginning of a fulfilling career path in sales, marketing, and coaching. Maureen shares her experience with The Global Filipino Magazine, “It was a revelation to me, as it aligned perfectly with my passion and strengths, showing me a way to enjoy both life and work with a renewed sense of purpose.”

However, her path hasn’t been without obstacles. Overcoming homesickness and various professional challenges required inner strength and support from her family and friends. These experiences have not only shaped her resilience but also deepened her appreciation for her roots and the support system that has been instrumental in her journey. Maureen looks to the future with entrepreneurial aspirations, dreaming of establishing a coffee shop or restaurant in the Philippines that highlights the culinary heritage of Pampanga. This venture symbolizes her commitment to contributing to her home country’s economy and providing employment opportunities. Offering advice to fellow Filipinos working abroad, Maureen emphasizes resilience and hope.

She advises, “Challenges in terms of finances, relationships, and career growth are inevitable, but maintaining hope and perseverance is crucial.” She stresses the importance of selfimprovement, letting go of what can’t be controlled, and embracing life’s imperfections.

Choosing to work abroad was propelled by financial necessities, a decision Maureen describes as one of the hardest in her life. This move not only represented a career shift but also a significant personal challenge, particularly the emotional difficulty of leaving her family behind in the Philippines.

Junah’s career trajectory is a vivid illustration of her mantra, “Success will only come if you’re responsible enough to know what you’re doing and who you’re dealing with.” Her first job abroad in Al Ain was a significant milestone, but it was just the beginning. “My overseas career began when I arrived in the UAE in 2011,” she recalls. The establishment of her restaurant, Baofriend, marked a pivotal moment in her life. “Opening our first branch is already a highlight of my career,” Junah shares with The Global Filipino Magazine. Her ambitions, however, extend beyond the present, as she eagerly plans to expand her business, a move that excites her for the potential opportunities to reach deeper into the community.

As an entrepreneur, she takes pride in creating jobs and contributing to the community. Working overseas has offered Junah a spectrum of opportunities. It’s not just about career advancement; it’s about the rich tapestry of interactions with diverse individuals and witnessing the success stories of fellow Filipinos. “It helps me interact with more people from diverse backgrounds and see the journey of my countrymen,” she states. Overcoming struggles and looking ahead

Junah’s journey was not without its challenges. Climbing the nursing ranks and venturing into the F&B industry as a novice required immense determination. “Integrity, loving what you do, and always being prepared when an opportunity comes is very vital,” she advises. Her perseverance and faith played a crucial role in overcoming these hurdles. Looking to the future, Junah aspires to give back more significantly. “My bigger dream is to – hopefully – build a medical center or hospital in our hometown,” she shares, motivated by the desire to aid underserved communities. This vision drives her forward, fueling her ambition and dedication. Junah’s advice to her compatriots abroad centers on financial wisdom and preparedness. “Financial literacy is very important... Opportunity comes to those who are ready,” she emphasizes. Her insights are grounded in her observations and experiences, offering valuable guidance for fellow overseas Filipinos. Finally, Junah teases developments for Baofriend.

The process of shoe customization for Bryan is a collaborative endeavor. He engages deeply with his clients, understanding their preferences, favorite colors, and desired characters or themes. The meticulous process involves shoe preparation, deglazing, and applying multiple layers of premium leather paint. Bryan’s dedication to detail is evident as he describes, “I used fine point brushes for details and flat and rounds brushes for larger areas.” Bryan’s career hasn’t been without challenges. He recounts the daunting task of customizing a pair of shoes with a Michael Jordan portrait. “The customer said, ‘make it your own,’ and I chose Jordan,” he shares. This project turned out to be a testament to his commitment, as it led to another similar request, pushing him to constantly improve and add to his skill set. In the world of art, few stories are as compelling and inspiring as that of Bryan Jay Glorioso Espiritu, a Filipino artist who has carved a niche for himself in the realm of shoe customization. A 40-year-old customization specialist at Sand & Sands Sports LLC, he shared his remarkable journey with The Globa Filipino Magazine as an artist.

His work space, provided by his manager Mr. Ragab, became a canvas for his cultural expression. He painted a large Air Force 1 with the colors of the Philippine flag in the background. “It gives me more inspiration to push more as an OFW, as an artist, and as a Filipino,” he asserts.

Looking ahead, Bryan aspires to make a mark in the field of hyper-realism in custom shoe art. “Makilala sa ganitong larangan ang Pinoy and to make a hyper-realism portrait sa custom shoes,” he envisions. To aspiring artists in custom shoe art, Bryan offers sage advice, rooted in his own experiences: “Wag matakot magkamali, always give your 100% sa lahat ng ginagawa nyo. Explore the art and keep on learning.”

Bryan’s artistic journey commenced in 2013 as a tattoo artist, eventually leading him to the niche of shoe customization. “I started to draw on my friends’ shoes,” the OFW with 15 years of experience abroad recalls. This exploration opened doors to a significant opportunity – working with Nike Yas Mall, facilitated by his Sri Lankan friend Maddy.
